DISTURBED‘s David Draiman and GWAR‘s Oderus Urungus are continuing to speak out in defense of LAMB OF GOD vocalist Randy Blythe, who has been jailed in Prague, the Czech Republic, where he is accused of causing the death of a fan at one of the band’s shows in 2010. Blythe was arrested last week at the Prague airport and charged with manslaughter in connection with a 2010 Prague concert at which he allegedly shoved a local fan off the stage. The man, who is said to have stormed the stage three times during the show, reportedly suffered a brain hemorrhage that resulted in his death 14 days later.

Blythe faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Although he posted the Czech equivalent of $200,000 in bail, the decision to release the singer is still subject to appeal and so it will take some time for the state prosecutor’s office to give approval.
Draiman: “The only thing [Randy] is guilty of [is being involved in] a horrible accident. Someone comes up on stage, they get thrown back into the pit. [I’ve] done it a hundred times myself. The fault should be in the hands of the venue security who were supposed to ensure that no one got up there. It’s a dangerous thing to try.”
Oderus: “I LOVE Europe and its many pleasures and fully support Euro metalheads. What I am concerned about is the lack of outrage. There should be shows, protests, and continual harassment of the authorities until Randy is free. There should be a mob of metalheads outside the jail where he is being held, 24-7, so when he gets out he can see with his own eyes that he has not been abandoned. All of the video of the incident shows it for what it truly was… a tragic accident. Fucking let him out already!”
A number of other rockers have come to Randy‘s defense, with many of them citing the 2004 shooting death onstage of PANTERA guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott as the reason why musicians are so defensive nowadays about fans invading the stage.
Draiman‘s bandmate and drummer Mike Wengren told The Pulse Of Radio not along after Dimebag was shot that his death had cast a shadow over live performing. “I think one of the most scariest things is, you go up onstage, and there’s this energy transfer between the band and the crowd, and you almost feel invincible. You feel very empowered. Never in a million years would anyone ever think something like that was even possible, and I think it just caught everyone off guard. It’s pretty scary.”

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH bassist Chris Kael simply tweeted, “Everything changed on December 8, 2004. #stayoffthestage #FreeRandyBlythe,” while ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian wrote, “It’s complete and utter bullshit for him to be treated like a criminal for something he didn’t do. Now fans can see firsthand why there’s no stage diving anymore. Especially in the post-Darrell world we live in . . . Of course it’s sad that this person died, it’s a tragedy, but it’s not Randy‘s fault.”
LAMB OF GOD had been touring Europe in support of its latest album, “Resolution”, when Blythe was arrested. The band canceled the rest of its shows and returned home to Richmond, Virginia on Sunday (July 1) — all, of course, except Blythe.
LAMB OF GOD‘s publicist, Adrenaline PR, issued a statement on June 30 stressing that “under no circumstances was there a fight of any kind involved [during LAMB OF GOD‘s 2010 concert]. This incident deals with a fan that three times during the concert jumped the barricade and rushed Randy during the performance. It is alleged that the third time, security was not able to reach him and that Randy pushed him back into the audience where supposedly he fell and hit his head.”

GWAR‘s upcoming CD will be a tribute to their fallen bandmate and friend Cory Smoot, a.k.a. Flattus Maximus, who was found dead as GWAR was about to enter Canada on November 3, 2011. He was 34 years old.
GWAR returned to the road in March on the second leg of their “Return Of The World Maggot Tour”. The trek kicked off with a special tribute show for Cory Smoot in Richmond, Virginia, at The National Theater on March 16. All proceeds from the Richmond show went to the Smoot Family Fund which has been established to help support Cory‘s widow and their unborn child. Support on this run came from fellow Richmond metallers MUNICIPAL WASTE, and California’s GHOUL.
GWAR‘s latest album, “Bloody Pit Of Horror”, sold around 2,800 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The band’s previous CD, “Lust In Space”, opened with 5,000 units to debut at position No. 96 on The Billboard 200 chart.

The master of the Earth — that is, GWAR lead singer Oderus Urungus — has a few choice words for humans who “take animals, rip their skins off, and make marmoset banana hammocks with them.” In a brand-new video for peta2, PETA‘s youth division, Urungus pronounces “a bitter doom on those who fuck with our furry friends” — who he says are humans’ “superiors” — and announces GWAR‘s new plan for an all-natural alternative to fur: the pubic hair of prison inmates.
“GWAR is titillated to be working with peta2, in this, the latest thing that GWAR is doing,” says Urungus. “We’ll be providing the humans with an alternative to animal fur and also helping improve the hygiene of this country’s vast prison industry, in a collaboration that is sure to rip off a few heads.”
As you may recall, this is GWAR‘s second video for peta2. The first, titled “Fight Humans, Not Dogs”, pitted a GWAR “slave” against THE RED CHORD‘s Guy Kozowyk in a no-holds-barred match.

American Metal band GWAR have canceled their Europian tour. “GWAR’s 2011 European tour has been cancelled. Ticket sales were slow so promoters started pulling the plug on shows. Finally we had so many blow-outs that we had no choice but to cancel the whole thing. We can’t afford to pay to play Europe, after all we aren’t fucking tourists! But we are extremely disappointed this happened and very sorry for our fans over there, especially in light of recent events. I know everybody over there wanted to say goodbye to Flattus in a way that a only a GWAR show could provide, and we were really looking forward to sharing that with you guys.
Hopefully all tickets will be refunded (plz let us know if they are not). Again we are really sorry this happened, but there was nothing we could do. Very, very bummed… but GWAR still lives, and will return to reap a bloody vengeance too terrible to comprehend.” GWAR posted.

GWAR and the family of Cory Smoot have released a statement regarding the official cause of the guitarist’s death. Cory had played the character of Flattus Maximus for over ten years, and was discovered dead on the band’s tour bus on November 3 of this year. He was 34 years old.
Stated North Dakota coroner William Masselo, MD: “We have finalized the autopsy report and death certificate. I have determined that Cory died from a coronary artery thrombosis brought about by his pre-existing coronary artery disease.”
The band, which will continue as a four-piece until the current tour schedule is complete, has officially retired the character of Flattus Maximus, and has announced no plans regarding a new GWAR-tarist.
Metal Blade and GWAR have since set up the Smoot Family Foundation to raise funds for Cory‘s wife, Jaime, and their unborn child. Donations can be made here.

Smoot joined GWAR in 2002 and first appeared on the band’s 2004 album “War Party”. He was the fifth guitarist to play the character of Flattus Maximus, known by his red face, white dreadlocks, dinosaur-head shoulder pads and reptile feet.
Born August 25, 1977, Smoot previously played in metal bands MISGUIDED and LOCUS FACTOR and continued to play with MENSREA, in addition to establishing his own solo project, THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT.
