Ex-Megadeth Guitarist Jeff Young: “I Passed on David Lee Roth Band, I Just Don’t Really Like His Voice”

Canada’s The Metal Voice recently interviewed former Megadeth guitarist Jeff Young at the Gramercy Theatre in New York March 8, 2023.

Young talked about the bands up and coming new Live CD/DVD, gave an update on new material for the Kings of Thrash plus spoke about the time he turned down David Lee Roth in the late 80’s as the guitarist.

When he was asked about passing on David Lee Roth band in the late 80’s, Young said, “I passed on that, (Jason Becker guitarist got the gig), which I am glad he got him (Jason Becker), to do one killer project before he got sick, he was a buddy of mine. Once I saw his (Jason Becker) movie I was really glad I passed on it. I was being managed by Diamond Dave management that’s how I got that offer.  I turned it down, I thought he (David Lee Roth) would end up in Vegas and that was all the way back then and where did he end up? I might E.S.P. or something. I just don’t really like his (David Lee Roth) voice, to be honest and now I since learned he is a lunatic, so I made a great choice, he’s nuts.”

Kings of Thrash, the new band featuring former Megadeth members David Ellefson (bass) and Jeff Young (guitar), the group, which also includes drummer Fred Aching as well as guitarist/vocalist Chaz Leon, along with the occasional guest appearance by another former MEGADETH member, Chris Poland (guitar)

In addition, the band has signed a worldwide deal with Cleopatra Records and will be releasing a live CD/DVD package called Best of the West…Live at the Whisky A Go Go on March 24. The 17-song set was recorded and filmed live during the band’s sold out show at the legendary Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, CA on October 15, 2022 and also features performances with Chris Poland. The DVD was directed by Michael Sarna for Inmotion Entertainment.

Ex-MEGADETH guitarist and host of the Music Without Boundaries online radio show, Jeff Young has checked in with the following announcement:

“We’ve played him on the show many times before. Thursday night (March 8th) we pay tribute to one of the greatest rock guitarists, period. RONNIE MONTROSE, rest in peace. This week on Jeff Young’s Music Without Boundaries we all contemplate how bad this sucks, along with the stellar body of work Ronnie left behind for us to savor. I will be both proud and totally bummed to bring you this show – stay tuned…”

Ronnie Montrose ~ 1947-2012

On March 3rd, legendary rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose passed away, losing his five year battle with prostate cancer. He was 64 years old. The following message has been posted on Montrose’s official website:

“A few months ago, we held a surprise party for Ronnie Montrose’s 64th birthday. He gave an impromptu speech, and told us that after a long life, filled with joy and hardship, he didn’t take any of our love for granted. He passed today. He’d battled cancer, and staved off old age for long enough. And true to form, he chose his own exit the way he chose his own life. We miss him already, but we’re glad to have shared with him while we could.”

SOULS ON 11: DVD Preview Clip Available

SOULS ON 11 — the project featuring former MEGADETH guitarist Jeff Young and 24-year-old Swedish singer Guernica Mancini — had its October 21 performance at Genghis Cohen Restaurant, Bar & Music Room in Hollywood, California filmed for DVD release. Joining Young and Mancini during the concert were James Lomenzo (bass; MEGADETH, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, WHITE LION) and Debby Holiday (vocals).

A test edit of the song “Maybe Tomorrow” from the DVD can be seen below.

Mancini joined SOULS ON 11 earlier in the year as the replacement for Schascle “Twinkle” Yochim, who was unable to move forward with the project due to various “personal and family situations.” Seeking a vocalist of European sensibility led the guitarist back to his Alma mater, Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. Mancini is a recent graduate of MI‘s Vocal Institute Of Technology and is currently attending courses in Music Business at UCLA. During her tenure at VIT, Mancini went through a self-proclaimed “’80s metal phase,” exploring a natural affinity and the uncanny ability to sing in the style of Ronnie James Dio, SKID ROW‘s Sebastian Bach, Janis Joplin and the like.

SOULS ON 11‘s recording lineup is rounded out by the world-class rhythm section of Lomenzo and drummer Jeff Bowders (PAUL GILBERT, PUDDLE OF MUDD). Source: Blabbermouth.net
