MOTÖRHEAD will enter the studio in January with longtime producer Cameron Webb to begin recording its next album for a mid-2013 release. “We’ll go into the rehearsal room about a month before the album and just band stuff out,” MOTÖRHEAD mainman Lemmy Kilmister tells Billboard.com.
In a recent interview with Artisan NewsMOTÖRHEAD drummer Mikkey Dee stated about the band’s plans for a new CD, “We have a lot of songs done already. It’s not finished. We’re gonna keep writing and we’ll record it next year, and it will come out next year.”
MOTÖRHEAD released “The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 2: Anyplace Crazy As Anywhere Else” in Germany on September 21, three days later in the rest of Europe and October 9 in North America via UDR/EMI. The follow-up to 2011’s “The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 1: Everywhere Further Than Everyplace Else” features the band’s 2011 Wacken Open Air headline appearance as well as highlights from Sonisphere (United Kingdom) and Rock In Rio (Brazil) shows.
MOTÖRHEAD‘s latest album, “The Wörld Is Yours”, sold 7,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 94 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band’s previous effort, “Motörizer”, premiered with 6,400 units back in 2008 to debut at No. 82, while 2006’s “Kiss Of Death” registered a first-week tally of 3,500.
Legendary MOTÖRHEAD mainman Lemmy Kilmister spoke with Jeb Wright from Classic Rock Revisited recently about a number of topics including their new live set, The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 2: Anyplace Crazy As Anywhere Else.
A few excerpts from the chat follow:
Classic Rock Revisited: The Wacken Festival looks amazing on the DVD. Tell me what is unique about Wacken?
Lemmy: “It is one of the oldest festivals in Germany; it’s been around a long time. We played there early on when it was only one day and now it is four or five days. There were only a few thousand people in the old days and now it’s 85,000. I’ve got a plaque from them for Motörhead being the band that has played Wacken the most times.”
Classic Rock Revisited: : You don’t depend on the lights or the showmanship. Did record companies ever try to get you to be more gimmicky on stage?
Lemmy: “No, we can’t afford to do that in America, anyway. If you’re third on the bill you don’t get to do that. If it is one of our own shows then we play at smaller places, so there isn’t room for a lot of that stuff. We found ourselves having to stand on the music alone, which we have done so far.”
Classic Rock Revisited: : When you play big festivals there are Metal bands from different generations. Some of the new bands are more about the show than the music.
Lemmy: “That’s because people applaud pyro. That encourages bands to do that. It seems someone is always wanting to light a match. The girls breathing fire is different because they have tits and things. Most of our audience is boys, so it is a bit of a treat for the guys. They’ve been standing there all day, very often in the rain, especially in Europe. It is just a bit of a treat.”
Classic Rock Revisited: : There are rumors that the next Motörhead album will be all covers.
Lemmy: “We did discuss it, but we haven’t come to a concrete decision on it. It would be fun to do. The three of us are very different when it comes to music, so it would be a very diverse album. We’d make them all into Motörhead songs, anyway. We’ve done covers before.”
Michael Christopher of The Boston Phoenix recently conducted an interview with MOTÖRHEAD mainman Lemmy Kilmister. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
On his “legend” status:
Lemmy: “I’m pretty grounded — I don’t believe any of that crap. You have to remember where you come from, which is exactly where they [the audience] come from; it’s just the same, and I got lucky. I’m the one they’re pointing at, at the moment; later on, one of them will be the one we’re pointing at. It comes around.”
On the recent passing of former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord at the age of 71:
Lemmy: “It’s just a shame, because Jon Lord was, to a large extent, responsible for me being in rock and roll. He was in a band called the ARTWOODS years ago, with Ronnie Wood‘s brother Arthur. They were sort of a jazz-blues band, I guess. They played at the place in Wales where I was living, this dingy little boozer, and I was talking to Jon and, like an idiot, he gave me his address in London. So, of course, I went down there and he wasn’t there, but he was living at Art‘s mother’s house where Ronnie Wood, who was in a band called THE BIRDS, was living and they let me crash on the couch. I woke up and I’ve got all THE BIRDS standing around me going, ‘What are you doing on Mom-mom’s couch?,’ all poking me with this terrible cockney rabble. I never forgot that Jon — a complete stranger, and I’m some kid — gave me his address to come down to London and see him. I often told him thanks for that. I saw him late last year in a hotel in Germany in Cologne. He was over there doing some orchestral stuff, and we talked in the bar for awhile. . . . I’m glad I saw him, since he’s since departed.”
On the Internet being used to promote new bands:
Lemmy: “The unfortunate thing about it is you give them the Internet, which is the greatest communication system known to mankind, and we use it for fucking child pornography, which is really encouraging, isn’t it? You can rely on mankind; they always take it to the lowest common denominator and crap all over it.”
On social media like Facebook and Twitter:
Lemmy: “I don’t do those things, because I have enough hassle keeping up with what we’ve got without it, sitting on my ass doing 10 to 20 hours of that every day, twitting all my friends. Twitter? Not in my lexicon, sorry. I don’t Twitter, man.”
The documentary on MOTÖRHEAD singer and bassist Lemmy Kilmister, “Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch”, has been nominated for a Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Award in the “Best Sound Editing In A Documentary Feature Film” category.
Greg Olliver, the film’s co-director and also editor/sound editor, is flattered by the nomination, especially since “Lemmy” has been nominated alongside films that were directed by Martin Scorsese (“George Harrison: Living In The Material World”) and Werner Herzog (“Cave Of Forgotten Dreams”).
Said Olliver: “According to my doctor, I actually lost some middle-range hearing while working on ‘Lemmy’, and even though the MOTÖRHEAD shows we shot played a big part of my hearing loss, the editing and listening to MOTÖRHEAD over and over and over again for months definitely added to the problem. At least the constant ringing in my ears will now constantly remind me of the award we’ve been nominated for!”
“Lemmy” closed out 2011 in style, with gold sales certifications around the world, and a best-film award.
Directed by Olliver and Wes Orshoski, “Lemmy” has now been certified gold (50,000 DVDs, Blu-rays, digital downloads shipped or sold) by the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA).
Called “the stuff of legends” by the Los Angeles Times and “inspiring” by NME, “Lemmy” was also recently certified gold in the U.K. by the British Phonographic Industry, and has also reached the milestone in Germany, France and Scandinavia.
“Lemmy” also took home the “Film Of The Year” trophy at the annual Classic Rock Awards in London in November, beating out titles by THE ROLLING STONES, AC/DC, FOO FIGHTERS, BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE and “The Big 4” (METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX). In its review of “Lemmy”, Classic Rock called the film “a heart-warming, life-affirming thing of beauty.”
Filmed over more than three years, “Lemmy” features appearances by artists spanning the musical spectrum, from METALLICA, Ozzy Osbourne and Slash to Henry Rollins, Peter Hook (NEW ORDER, JOY DIVISION), Mick Jones (THE CLASH) and Jarvis Cocker.
The U.S. version of “Lemmy”, a two-DVD set issued by Damage Case Films/Megaforce, is the definitive version of the documentary. The Blu-ray features more than four hours of bonus content, including featurettes, live performances from MOTÖRHEAD and Lemmy with METALLICA, extended scenes and interview outtakes. The DVD features more than three hours of extras. Both include a glossy booklet with exclusive photos and drawings only available in the U.S.
“Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch” sold around 3,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 1 on Billboard‘s “Top Music Videos” chart. In addition, both the DVD and Blu-ray disc were among the top 10 best-selling documentaries on Amazon.com the week of its release.
