Video footage of drummer Lars Ulrich and the rest of METALLICA hanging out with New Orleans brass ensemble THE SOUL REBELS and playing THE SOUL REBELS trombone during a rehearsal for METALLICA‘s 30th anniversary week of concerts at The Fillmore in San Francisco, California in December 2011 can be seen below.
THE SOUL REBELS opened all four METALLICA 30th-anniversary shows and jammed with METALLICA every night. THE SOUL REBELS also played both days at METALLICA‘s Orion Music + More festival.
“They had never dealt with a brass band,” THE SOUL REBELS snare drummer and co-founder Lumar LeBlanc told The Times-Picayune of his new buddies in METALLICA. “They accepted us as a band. They didn’t want us to come in with ‘When THE Saints Go Marching In’. They saw us as, ‘Ya’ll can actually do this METALLICA music.'”
THE SOUL REBELS released their Rounder Records debut, “Unlock Your Mind”, on January 31.
Multi-platinum recording artist Bob Seger performed a rousing version of his 1973 classic “Turn The Page” at the 43rd annual induction ceremony and awards presentation of the Songwriters Hall Of Fame, which was held on June 14 at New York City’s Marriott Marquis. Hosted by legendary songwriter, ASCAP board member and Songwriters Hall Of Fame chairman Jimmy Webb, the evening inducted a new class of songwriters who mostly rose to prominence in the 1970s and whose work continues to impact the musical culture.
When asked for his thoughts on METALLICA‘s version of “Turn The Page”, which appears on the band’s 1998 covers/compilation album “Garage Inc.”, Seger told Artisan News (see video below), “I loved it. They told me they were gonna it and I loved it. I really liked the drums, especially, because our drums are really simple. [It was] a cool take on it. It’s been done before. Another guy did it in Australia and won a Grammy with it.”
METALLICA‘s cover of “Turn The Page” was the first single from “Garage Inc.” The song topped the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for 11 consecutive weeks, the highest number of weeks METALLICA had ever spent at the top.
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich reportedly heard the original version of “Turn The Page” while driving across the Golden Gate Bridge and later commented that he thought it “had James [Hetfield] all over it”.
METALLICA‘s rendition features the same tempo as Seger‘s, but with a heavier feel; the saxophone part is replaced by a high slide guitar line from Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield played a guitar solo before the last run through the chorus.
METALLICA‘s music video for the song, helmed by acclaimed Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund (RAMMSTEIN, SATYRICON, OZZY OSBOURNE, MADONNA, THE PRODIGY), is about the life of a stripper who prostitutes herself while she is trying to raise a child; the prostitute/stripper is played by Ginger Lynn Allen.
Mysterious Swedish heavy rock buzz band GHOST performed at Orion Music + More, the two-day festival created by METALLICA that was held June 23-24 at Bader Field in Atlantic City, New Jersey. METALLICA frontman James Hetfield personally took to the stage to introduce GHOST, telling the audience, “I appreciate you coming coming down early and checking out one of my new favorite bands. From Sweden… It’s never too early for scary, all right? Please welcome from Sweden… GHOST.”
Fan-filmed video footage of Hetfield’s GHOST introduction, as well as the first song of the band’s Orion Music + More set, can be seen below.
GHOST is rumored to have inked a deal with Seven Four Ent. The band is said to be the first signing for the label, which is led by former Warner Bros. Records Chairman/CEO Tom Whalley.

In an interview with CBS Local, METALLICA lead guitarist Kirk Hammett said, “I know ‘Ride The Lightning’ forwards and backwards. It’s not like ‘The Black Album,’ where there are three or four songs that we rarely play. Over the course of the years, we’ve played most of ‘Ride The Lightning’, except for one song we’ve never done, ‘Escape’. It was pretty easy [to re-learn those songs]. We put way more time into learning ‘The Black Album’ than ‘Ride The Lightning’.”
Orion Music + More featured multiple live music stages plus a lifestyle element that reflects each of METALLICA‘s bandmembers’ many personal interests.
When asked why METALLICA would want to do their own festival, guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield said in a recent interview, “First of all, because we can. Why wouldn’t you? We’re just trying to bring a little more of a mix to what is going on. . . . I think the Europeans are able to look at a festival more as an event than ‘my favorite band is playing.’ We’re not necessarily trying to reproduce that in the States, but we’d like to bring a little taste of that here.”
Regarding the significance of the “Ride The Lightning” and “Metallica” albums, Hetfield said, “‘Ride The Lightning’ started to splinter us off from your SLAYERs and other thrash bands. A song called ‘Fade To Black’ was an instant thorn in the side of the metal community. It was the first veering off the studded path. [The Black Album] became the album, I guess, that people needed to have. It’s a gateway for people to get into METALLICA.”
