METALLICA is among the artists who will headline the 2012 edition of Outside Lands festival, set to take place August 10-12 in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Also scheduled to appear are Stevie Wonder, NEIL YOUNG AND CRAZY HORSE, Skrillex, Jack White, FOO FIGHTERS, Beck, SIGUR RÓS, FUN., JUSTICE, Norah Jones, THE KILLS, OF MONSTERS AND MEN, ALABAMA SHAKES and GRANDADDY.

Likewise, Wine Lands will celebrate over 30 of the region’s wineries.
Independent Music Press has set a May 28 release date for “Metallica: The Early Years And The Rise Of Metal” by Neil Daniels. This is the first and only book to look at the massive impact of METALLICA‘s first four albums on the international metal scene. The 208-page book shows the birth and rise of the monster known as METALLICA and will link the band — and the American metal scene — with the famed New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement in the U.K. and metal originators such as BLACK SABBATH and JUDAS PRIEST.
METALLICA‘s early success was built on strong live performances and fierce
thrash metal riffs. The group would eventually become the biggest American metal
band in the world and the legacy of those first four albums — “Kill ‘Em All”, “Ride The Lightning”, “Master Of Puppets” plus “…And Justice For All” — lives on to this day.
American thrash metal produced four major bands — METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX — dubbed the Big Four, but METALLICA are the kings. This book tells the story of how that remarkable global triumph started, complete with examples of very early memorabilia and exclusive interviews from people who saw those early gigs and can provide eyewitness accounts of this incredible story.
Daniels has written about classic rock and heavy metal for a wide range of magazines, fanzines and websites. He has written books on JUDAS PRIEST, Robert Plant, BON JOVI, LINKIN PARK and JOURNEY. Source: Blabbermouth.net
All 60,000 tickets to METALLICA‘s three shows at the Sports Palace in Mexico City — scheduled for August 1, 2 and 4 — sold out in less than 90 minutes last week. As a result, the band has added two more dates in Mexico City: August 6 and 7 at the same venue.
The Banamex pre-sale starts Wednesday, March 28 at 11 a.m. CST, with the public on-sale Thursday, March 29, also at 11 a.m. CST.
METALLICA announced on March 15 that the band will unveil what the group’s publicist described as a “mind-blowing new stage” in Mexico “that needs to be seen to be believed.” The 140-foot-by-50-foot stage will feature “colossal components and striking visual elements spanning METALLICA‘s entire 30-year career.”
The band itself went further in a post at its official web site, saying, “After years in the making, we are beyond excited to finally unveil the all new, out of control, massive stage and METALLI-show . . . Mexico will be the first to see what will be the cornerstone of our touring escapades for years to come.”
It is not clear whether this production is the highly theatrical show that the band first discussed back in 2010, with co-manager Peter Mensch saying it would be METALLICA‘s “equivalent of [PINK FLOYD‘s] ‘The Wall’” and would “blow your mind.”
When The Pulse Of Radio asked drummer Lars Ulrich about that idea recently, he said it was one of many projects METALLICA was considering. “That’s still circling also,” he said. “None of this stuff goes away. I mean, we just throw these balls up in the air and then we try to tackle them one at a time. That one’s still in the air, nothing definitive, but it’s still circling. None of these things go away, they just get bigger and costlier and overwhelm us more (laughs).”
METALLICA last appeared in Mexico in 2009, playing to over 150,000 fans during three sold-out nights at Foro Sol Stadium that were captured for a live DVD.
The new stage show is said to be twice the size of the production that METALLICA has been using since 2008 on its “World Magnetic” tour.
Before all this happens, METALLICA will headline its own two-day musical event, the Orion Music + More festival, scheduled for June 23-24 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Over 20 acts are slated to perform. Source: Blabbermouth.net

METALLICA‘s four-song EP called “Beyond Magnetic”, which was made available digitally in December, and as a physical CD in January, will be released on vinyl to celebrate Record Store Day on April 21. The effort consists of the quartet of previously unheard tracks that the band unveiled in concert in December during its 30th-anniversary celebration. All four tunes — “Hate Train”, “Just A Bullet Away”, “Hell And Back” and “Rebel Of Babylon” — were recorded during the sessions for the band’s 2008 “Death Magnetic” album but left off the final track list. The studio versions of all four songs — all rough mixes — were sent to METALLICA fan club members one at a time, after each song was performed live during each of the band’s four shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco.
Commented the band: “We’ve always been big supporters of our friends at independent retail and the annual event the third Saturday of each April… we even helped kick off the first year in 2008 with an in-store appearance at one of our hometown stores! To add to the fun, this is no ordinary black vinyl release, but instead will be on silver vinyl with an exclusive METALLICA sticker included in the package. Look for the EP on the special Saturday release date at your favorite local record store and on Metallica.com. . . Our international friends should stay tuned for details about a release outside of North America… specifics are still being worked out with our label.”
About Record Store Day: Record Store Day is managed by the Music Monitor Network and is organized in partnership with the Alliance Of Independent Media Stores (AIMS), the Coalition Of Independent Music Stores (CIMS) and celebrates the culture of independent record stores by playing host to in-store events/performances, signings and special product releases on a global scale.
Record Store Day takes place annually on the third Saturday of April.
METALLICA previously stated about the four songs that made up “Beyond Magnetic”: “During the ‘Death Magnetic’ album sessions in 2007 and 2008, we originally recorded 14 songs. When it came time to pick the songs for the final album, we decided on 10 songs that you’ve all come to know over the last three years. Some of you may have heard bits and pieces of those other songs on ‘Mission Metallica’ (remember ‘Mission Metallica’?!) or heard rumors about them during the recording process, and wondered, ‘What ever happened to those other four songs???.’ We kept them in the vault and decided to pull them just for this special celebration, so here are the four leftover tracks from the ‘Death Magnetic’ sessions. They are ROUGH mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March ’08. These four songs were released as gift to our closest fans, the members of our fan club, to enjoy. Now they’re being made available to you.”
“Beyond Magnetic” track listing:
01. Hate Train
02. Just A Bullet Away
03. Hell And Back
04. Rebel Of Babylon
“Beyond Magnetic” has sold 105,000 copies in the United States so far, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The 30th-anniversary shows featured METALLICA playing songs from deep in their catalog, while welcoming guests like BLACK SABBATH‘s Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler, Kid Rock, Lou Reed, JUDAS PRIEST‘s Rob Halford, ALICE IN CHAINS‘ Jerry Cantrell, former bassist Jason Newsted and many others to the stage.
The final show on December 10 featured a performance by the very earliest lineup of the group.
“Death Magnetic” was officially certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on June 28, 2010 for shipments in the United States in excess of two million copies.
