METALLICA successfully performed a 10-song concert in Antarctica on Sunday (December 8), with video from the historic show available below. A statement from the band said, “This was the most unique show METALLICA has ever done. The band, contest winners, research station scientists (from Russia, South Korea, China, Poland, Chile, Brazil and Germany), and the ship crew, all crammed in this little dome out on the helipad of Carlini Station in Antarctica! The energy in the little dome was amazing! Words cannot describe how happy everyone was.”
The METALLICA concert was sponsored by Coca-Cola Zero and fans from several Latin and South American countries had a chance to enter a contest and win the opportunity to join the band on the expedition.
The concert took place under a dome at the Carlini Argentine Base and was heard by the fans through headphones, with no other amplifiers or sound system. The gig was also live-streamed in the participating countries.
METALLICA‘s setlist was as follows:
01. Creeping Death
02. For Whom The Bell Tolls
03. Sad But True
04. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
05. Master Of Puppets
06. One
07. Blackened
08. Nothing Else Matters
09. Enter Sandman
10. Seek & Destroy
Professionally filmed video footage of the concert can be seen below.
Speaking to Nikki Blakk of the San Francisco, California radio station 107.7 The Bone last month, METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett said: “We are playing Antarctica; it’s pretty wacky. It’s crazy, because I don’t deal with cold very well, so I have my reservations. But it should be pretty cool, because we’ve played the North Pole before — we’ve played Tuktoyaktuk [in 1995]— so we have to play the South Pole. Tuktoyaktuk was fine; it wasn’t as cold as it sounded. But I have a feeling that the Antarctica is a lot colder than the North Pole. And it should be an interesting experience.”

According to Nuclear Blast Records, Kirk Hammett of METALLICA recently spoke to Nikki Blakk from 107.7 the Bone about his upcoming horror convention and announced that CARCASS will be performing at the event. Listen to the entire interview here:
“When we heard that Kirk Hammett was opening a carny fair in the Bay Area we knew we wanted in! We’re quite honored that we’ve invited to appear in the ‘freak show’ booth,” stated CARCASS frontman Jeff Walker in his typical self-deprecating sarcastic fashion. “Joking aside we’re looking forward to the Fear FestEvil, will be a nice ‘little’ warm up for our US Tour next year. See you there!”

Created to honor the weird, the wonderful, the eclectic, and the things that make your hair stand up on end, the heavy doors of collector/curator/historian/guardian Kirk Von Hammett’s crypt will be opened to the public to display the finest acquisitions in his extensive collection of horror memorabilia which includes rare movie posters & props, costumes, models, masks, and toys from various eras.
“I’ve always loved horror, I’ve always loved collecting, I’ve always loved weird and macabre things and I’ve always loved conventions,” confesses Hammett. “So what could be better than having your own Fear FestEviL where ALL those great and crazy things can be enjoyed by like-minded people under one pretty cool roof?! Nothing!!! And because I’ve seen some conventions turn from back-room gatherings of like-minded dorks into mainstream hipster extravaganzas, rest assured that it’s my intention to make this a great experience where all things horror, weird, and nerdy are celebrated! So come one and all!!!”
Already confirmed to attend as panelists will be Slash, makeup FX legend Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), Tom Savini (Dawn Of The Dead), and John A. Russo (Night Of The Living Dead).

METALLICA have confirmed their upcoming show in Antarctica. The band have released the following statement:
“After over 30 years as a band, we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth… except for one. That is all about to change as we are set travel to Antarctica, the only continent that Metallica has never played on until now!! We are partnering with Coca-Cola Zero for one of the most unique and special concert events in our career as we’ll be performing near the heliport of the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on Sunday, December 8th, 2013.
Latin American fans in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico will be able to enter a contest for the chance to win an Antarctic cruise that sails December 3rd – 10th and will stop at Carlini. We’ll be playing inside a dome on the base and in another twist, the show will be transmitted to the audience via headphones with no amplification… a real first for us! The show will also be streamed live for our friends in those Latin American countries who cannot join us at the base and filmed to share with everyone at a later date.
For more details about his amazing adventure, check here. To enter the contest to join us in Antarctica, click here. Contest entry begins on October 28th.
Pack up those warm clothes and we’ll see you at the bottom of the planet!”
An official press release follows:
Coca-Cola Zero presents Música Zero, an artistic event that will enable Metallica to perform their world-class music in Antarctica for the first time. Besides the concert by the mythic band formed by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, this initiative offers their fans the chance to participate in a unique expedition to see the wonders of a place reserved for peace, international cooperation and science.
In order to be part of the trip, fans will have to participate in a contest that is being launched in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico, starting on October 28th and until November 22nd. Candidates will face the challenge of demonstrating what they would be willing to do to live this unprecedented experience and share it through Coca-Cola Zero’s Twitter account (@CocaColaZeroAr) including the hashtag #CocaColaZeroAntartida.
The winners will leave on December 3rd in a cruise from the port of Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, headed for Antarctica. During the 10-day journey, they will be able to enjoy the landscapes of this beautiful continent, participate in lectures to be provided by specialists, see audiovisual material on the work of the scientists and receive environmental information.
An exclusive concert: Metallica’s concert will take place in a site set up close to the heliport of the Carlini Argentine Base and will have a feature that will make it absolutely exceptional: it will be broadcasted to the audience through headphones. In addition, Metallica fans of participating countries will be able to enjoy the live streaming from Antarctica through the webpage http://www.coca-cola.tv; http://www.coca-cola.fm.
From Antarctica to the world: In addition, Coca-Cola Zero will donate equipment for the new laboratory at the Carlini base which concentrates the largest number of Argentinean scientific investigations and international cooperation. Coca-Cola Zero will likewise contribute to disseminate the marvels of this continent through a documentary and the entire “Música Zero” experience will be broadcasted previously and during the event.
Antarctica is under the special stewardship of the Antarctic Treaty and various international forums which, among other aspects, contemplate the possibility of fostering cultural activities to create awareness on the importance of this continent, safeguard Antarctic biodiversity and as an example of international cooperation.
“Música Zero” has complied with the Environmental Impact Assessment developed by the Environmental Management Program and Tourism of the Argentine National Antarctic Directorate (Dirección Nacional del Antártico, DNA) according to the guidelines of the Antarctic Protection Protocol (Madrid Protocol).
According to Box Office Mojo, METALLICA‘s new 3D IMAX concert movie, “Metallica Through The Never”, has taken in just $3.4 million at the box office as of October 20. The film reportedly cost more than $20 million to make, with the band putting up most of the money for the project.
A recent video documenting the making of “Through The Never” showed Peter Mensch, one of METALLICA‘s managers at Q Prime, discussing with the band ways to save $2 million in order to get the film’s budget down to $30 million, according to Bloomberg.com.
“It depends on what you count,” METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich said. “Are you counting the promotion, the marketing, the live record, the stage that we’ll continue to use in future tours? This is way north of eight figures. It’s a lot for us.”
Marc Reiter, who works for Q Prime, told METALLICA‘s fan club magazine So What! that the movie was the biggest single expense in the band’s history, more than the combined budgets of all their records to date. Q Prime also invested an undisclosed amount in the film.
Ulrich told The Quietus that he is not ready to write the film off as a flop. He explained, “That remains to be seen! Ask me when I come back and talk about the new record two years from now . . . I’m sure that if we don’t make all the money back, then, I don’t know, (we will in) T-shirt sales seven years down the line.”
Justin Bieber‘s “Never Say Never” is the highest-grossing concert movie ever with $73 million in the U.S., according to Box Office Mojo.
As previously reported, three different versions of “Metallica Through The Never” will be contained on the Blu-ray/DVD release of the film. In addition to the theatrical version, the disc will feature a separate cut of just the narrative portion of the film, which stars Dane DeHaan as a METALLICA roadie named Trip sent on a mission for the band in an increasingly dangerous urban landscape. The third cut will be just the footage of the band in concert, with three or four songs added that were not seen in the theatrical edition.
Trujillo told The Pulse Of Radio that director Nimród Antal was ready and willing to come up with a fictional story that would distinguish the movie from other concert films. “We interviewed quite a few directors, a lot of A-listers, and a lot of the directors thought we were crazy because it just was — it was a different approach to making a film,” he said. “But Nimród literally, he was excited about the challenge and he went and prepared and wrote the thread basically, this storyline, and created the character Trip and this journey that could co-exist with the performance.”
The standalone narrative footage from the movie will feature an all-new soundtrack composed by METALLICA and producer Greg Fidelman.
The package will also contain “‘Tallica Parking Lot”, an animated film created by Robert Trujillo and Titmouse Animation Studio.
A release date for the Blu-ray/DVD has yet to be announced.
