ALICE COOPER drummer Glen Sobel — whose other credits include Vivian Campbell, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, SIXX: A.M. and Paul Gilbert — was interviewed by Full Metal Rock‘s Craig C. at the Mapex booth at this year’s NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, a massive music-products convention that took place January 24-27 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below.
Sobel debuted his new Mapex MyDentity drum set on the ALICE COOPER “No More Mr Nice Guy 2012” tour.
Mapex filmed a promotional video of Glen showing off the new MyDentity line and how anyone can custom order kit details such as sizes and drum and hardware finish options via an online kit builder program.
Glen‘s new MyDentity kit is outfitted with a custom Gibraltar rack, another new addition to his setup.
iPhone applications developer Agile Partners asked TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick if he would run through a setup using the all-new stereo delay coming in AmpKit 1.6 (an amps, effects and recording app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch). The recording below, which was captured at this year’s NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, a massive music-products convention that took place January 24-27 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, features Alex on the developer version of AmpKit 1.6, which will feature stereo output capabilities. Alex is hooked into a Peavey 10-channel mixer, which is then going out to two Peavey 12D powered enclosures. The audio you hear was made from a digital recorder hooked to the output from the mixer. No EQing or mastering has been done to the AmpKit audio track. Some ambient sound from the camera mic has been added.
Skolnick is one of the true guitar heroes. He has performed in some of the world’s biggest venues with his seminal thrash metal band TESTAMENT, and relocated to New York City to earn a jazz degree from the New School. He has recorded four albums with his acclaimed trio, including his most recent, “Veritas”, out now on Palmetto Records.
TESTAMENT‘s new album, “Dark Roots Of Earth”, sold more than 20,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No, 12 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD arrived in stores on July 31, 2012 via Nuclear Blast Records.
Dave Castagno of RadioScreamer and Screamer Magazine conducted an interview with MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson at this year’s NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, a massive music-products convention that took place January 24-27 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below.
MEGADETH recently resumed work on its fourteenth studio album with producer Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND. The CD is currently being recorded at MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine‘s Vic’s Garage studio in San Marcos, California for an early 2013 release via an as-yet-undisclosed label following the band’s recent split with Roadrunner Records.
Johnny K produced MEGADETH‘s last album, 2011’s “TH1RT3EN”, which was also recorded at Vic’s Garage.
“TH1RT3EN” sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD marked the recorded return of Ellefson who was part of the band’s classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band’s legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with MEGADETH in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This was the first time Ellefson has played on a MEGADETH record since 2002’s “Rude Awakening”.
Video footage of ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO, the experimental band led by TESTAMENT/ex-SAVATAGE guitarist Alex Skolnick, performing inside the lobby of the Marriott hotel in Anaheim, California on January 26 during this year’s NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show can be seen below.
ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO‘s fourth album, “Veritas” (Latin for”Truth”), was released in March 2011 via the innovative jazz label Palmetto Records. The 11-track album contains nine original compositions, a cover of METALLICA‘s “Fade To Black” and a bonus remix of the song “Bollywood Jam” by Jay Sustain and Nik Chinboukas. The record was produced by Alex Skolnick and recorded at Spin Recording Studios in Long Island City, New York.
Alex Skolnick is a true guitar hero. At sixteen years old, he joined a group of twenty-somethings who’d formed a thrash metal band called TESTAMENT. Alex stayed with the band through five critically acclaimed albums and countless tours with, among others, SLAYER, MEGADETH, JUDAS PRIEST and WHITE ZOMBIE. After hearing and seeing one of Miles Davis‘ electric bands on TV, Alex relocated to New York City to play and study jazz.
ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO (AST) was formed while Alex was earning his BFA in jazz from New School University in Manhattan. AST has been lauded by critics, fans and musical heroes alike ranging from Downbeat to Jazziz to the Village Voice to Kirk Hammett of METALLICA.

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine was on hand at this year’s NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show today (Wednesday, January 23) at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, to show off his new Dean double-neck guitar.
Originally a one-off which was built for Dave to play at the “Big Four” shows, the guitar will go into full production this year.
Mustaine said the guitar “plays like a motherfucker.”
“When I went to Dean, I found out that the guitars were very responsive,” Mustaine said. “And one of the most important things was the attention to detail. Also the relationship with me as an artist. Because the previous companies I was with, the guitars were good, but the relationship was sour. And I found that being with Dean was really good for me, because they took care of me as an artist, they took care of the guitars, they also knew what the public liked.”
He continued: “Those of you that are distributors, you know that the younger generation, they want guitars that look cool and play great, that are affordable and that icons use. For me, I’m flattered to be considered an icon, but I’m just a guitar player. And to have this kind of backing and support from a company that is as reputable as Dean is really flattering.”
