Controversial Swedish metal band SHINING have announced a rare North American festival appearance at Montreal’s Messe Des Morts Festival, issues Season Of Mist. The festival runs from April 2-4 sees the band playing alongside other underground stalwarts SAMAEL, CULT OF FIRE, and MITOCHONDRION. More information about Messe Des Morts is available here.
As we reported earlier, SHINING(Niklas Kvarforth – Vocals, Concept, Guitars, Rainer Tuomikanto – Drums, Christian Larsson – Bass, Euge Valovirta – Guitar, Peter Huss – Guitar) have also released photos taken during the recent video shoot for a track from the band’s upcoming new record which is set to be released by Season of Mist in the spring. The photos, by Assi Viljanen, can be seen at SHINING’s official Facebook page.
Founded in 1996, SHINING has since earned notoriety within the black metal underground as a result of the band’s innovative and ever-evolving sound, in addition to main-man Niklas Kvarforth’s frightening and abrasive stage persona. Characterized by Kvarforth’s philosophy on suicide, SHINING was originally conceived as a “suicidal black metal” band, inciting violence within their rabid fan-base through the band’s provocative lyrics and self-destructive imagery. Refusing to be bound by the confines of the genre, SHINING later expanded their unique approach to songwriting and themes, incorporating melodic death metal passages and dynamic vocals ranges. These new influences developed SHINING into new breed of extreme music players, whose musical prowess continues to tread new ground.

“If ever a death metal album could be beautiful, this is it; Shining (the Swedish version) are a far cry from melodeath or so-called melodoom, but they’ve found a way to make blackened death metal that’s haunting, sad, melancholy and woefully aching yet somehow still absolutely gorgeous. Shining are a perfect example of a fantastic European band that should be receiving all kinds of acclaim in the states” – Metalsucks“No longer content with narrowisms of the genre they helped popularize, Kvarforth and his instrumentally adept backing band unfold song after song of beautifully despondent surprises. They draw from a diverse set of influences, and never do shining show hey;re out of their depth in plucking nuances from black metal, progressive rock and chart-topping Scandi-rpck, and making it unmistakably their own” – Decibel Magazine, “The top 100 Black Metal Albums of All Time”
Sweden’s SHINING has released photos taken during the recent video shoot for a track from the band’s upcoming ninth full-length album, which is set to be released on Season of Mist in the spring. The photos, by Assi Viljanen, have been uploaded onto SHINING‘s Facebook page and can be seen at http://www.facebook.com/shiningofficial
The only details regarding the video that SHINING is prepared to reveal for the time being is that it is being filmed in Helsinki, Finland and Belgrade, Serbia, and is directed by Martin Strandberg. Strandberg was also responsible for the videos for “Tillsammans Är Vi Allt” and “Förtvivlan, Min Arvedel” from the band’s seventh full length album “VII / Född Förlorare”, and is currently working on a “warts and all” documentary about the band.
Commenting on the video, SHINING founder and frontman Niklas Kvarforth had this to say: “Although Martin has worked on our videos before, this one will be something quite different from any previous efforts “.
The last release from SHINING was “8 ½ – Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd”, which appeared on Dark Essence Records in 2013 and featured guest vocals from some of the elite of Black Metal including ATTILA CSIHAR (MAYHEM, TORMENTOR), MANIAC (SKITLIV, EX MAYHEM), GAAHL (GOD SEED, WARDRUNA, TRELLDOM, EX GORGOROTH), FAMINE (PESTE NOIRE) and PEHR LARSSON (ALFAHANNE).
Season of Mist is proud to announce the signing of the ground-breaking, controversial Swedish metal band SHINING (Niklas Kvarforth – Vocals, Concept, Guitars, Rainer Tuomikanto – Drums, Christian Larsson – Bass, Euge Valovirta – Guitar, Peter Huss – Guitar). The band is currently writing their 9th studio album, to be released by Season of Mist in early 2015.
Regarding the signing, SHINING mastermind Niklas Kvarforth comments: “After a long period of negotiations and discussions that lasted almost eight years, I have now chosen to grant Season of Mist the privilege of releasing the next SHINING album. We have also once again decided to work with Andy La Roque and record at his Sonic Train facilities (ASCENSION, HAMMERFALL, IN FLAMES). The ceremony is set to begin in September, and thus my ninth child can be expected in early 2015.”

Swedish act SHINING was formed by Niklas “Kvarforth” Olsson in 1996. Already with a developed sense of direction to his compositions and expression of wholly negative outlook & emotion, Niklas created some utterly oppressive material for the debut release, the”Submit to Self-destruction” EP in 1998, when Niklas himself was still only 14 years old.
Angst was Shining’s third album and was originally released in 2002. A development of composition was clearly evident here, working in more subtle twists and complexities to the sinister & wholly oppressive suicidal black metal. The work of Shining is intended to reflect the dark & destructive side of the world & human nature.
The album was recorded at The Abyss Studios (Immortal, Marduk & Dimmu Borgir), the famous Swedish recording studio run by Peter Tagtgren, The album was recorded by Tommy Tagtgren. As is somewhat a trademark of the Shining sound, the album retains a hypnotic quality to the riffs mixed with unsettling vocal anguish, along with acoustic passages and expertly handled lead guitar passages. This was also the first Shining album to feature the legendary Hellhammer (Mayhem) on drums.
This edition of “III – Angst” is presented on 180gm heavyweight black vinyl.
Swedish extreme metallers SHINING have issued the following message on the band’s Official Facebook Page:
Niklas Kvarforth has to undergo some intensive treatment for a back problem that developed during the last tour. He has been told by doctors that he should not travel or perform for the time being until the problem is sorted out, because to do so would risk making it worse. Unfortunately, therefore, Shining has had to postpone the scheduled Finnish tour. Please contact your ticket agencies for refunds if you have already bought your tickets. We will try and reschedule as soon as we can.
