Two months ago, industrial metal icons POWERMAN 5000 announced they were readying a new album for 2020, The Noble Rot, and now the band is ready to share the very first single from that album, the goth club-inspired “Black Lipstick”. The song is a loving homage to dark ‘80s music like Depeche Mode, The Cure & Siouxsie Sioux, heavy on atmosphere and bass with frontman Spider One sneering melodically of a fly-by-night romantic encounter. A stylistic departure to be sure, but PM5K have always been an adventurous band. Spider shares, “I believe this was the first song we wrote for the album. It kind of laid the groundwork for the sound of the whole record. Kind of more experimental and electronic than the previous one. I think I may have been trying to channel Peter Murphy with the vocals.”
In addition, the band has shot a comical, hugely entertaining full concept video (pre-social distancing) for the song that captures the vibe of late-night music TV programming, complete with wacky host (played by John Ennis of Mr. Show and With Bob & David fame) and overworked smoke machines. As Spider explains it, “I had been watching a lot of clips from the British music show Top of the Pops and decided that creating a fake music show called Pop Toppers would be a pretty fun idea for a music video. Though just having Powerman 5000 performing the song seemed a bit whatever. That’s when I dreamed up the fictitious female goth band ‘Holly Holly and The Night Cloaks.’ Having this Siouxsie & the Banshees-type band lip sync our song was hilarious and matched the dark wave tone of the song perfectly.”

POWERMAN 5000 have announced that a reimagining of the classic ‘80s new wave smash “We Got The Beat” will be included on their upcoming album The Noble Rot. “We Got The Beat” was originally released in 1981 as part of The Go-Go’s multi-platinum debut album Beauty and the Beat.
Powerman 5000 frontman Spider One commented, “Oddly enough, The Go-Go’s are a main reason why I started playing music. I distinctly remember listening to Beauty and the Beat at my friend’s house when it first came out. The clarity and simplicity of the songs inspired me. I remember saying to my friend, ‘We could do this. We should start a band.’ Not long after, I put together my first punk band in high school.”
Regarding their spin on the song, Spider continued, “Our version is quite different than the original. People don’t realize how clever the lyrics are to that song. They think it’s just a song about dancing. I always connected with the idea of being young and lost and surrendering to conformity. We tried to give it a more ominous tone to match that message.”

“We Got the Beat” will be a part of Powerman 5000’s upcoming album The Noble Rot, which will be release this year through Cleopatra Records.
In other news, Powerman 5000 is proud to be a part of the recently announced remastered versions of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 coming to gaming platforms this September. The Tony Hawk franchise has been much loved by music fans for their use of authentic, energetic punk rock, alternative and indie rock songs, and PM5K’s smash hit “When Worlds Collide” is a highlight among the many other skate anthems featured in the game including tracks by Dead Kennedys, Goldfinger, Primus, Rage Against The Machine and more!
Cleopatra Records is proud to announce the signing of industrial metal superstars, POWERMAN 5000. Fronted by the creative mastermind Spider One, the band will launch a new album later this year and tour in support of the release both in the US and overseas.
Most notably known for their 1999 smash hit album Tonight The Stars Revolt, which included the explosive, culture-shocking single “When Worlds Collide,” PM5K have been building a catalog of solid, creatively adventurous albums that range from punk to space rock to a covers album that saw the band re-visioning tracks by T.Rex, Devo and INXS. In fact, it was this latter project, 2011’s Copies, Clones & Replicants, that first brought PM5K into the orbit of Cleopatra Records. But now this partnership is set to hit another level with the release of a brand new, all original studio album later this year.
PM5K frontman Spider proclaims “We are incredibly excited to partner with Cleopatra Records for our latest release The Noble Rot. We feel like we have put together our most diverse and interesting record ever. All boxes have been checked in the strange universe that is Powerman 5000 with this one, and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it.”
Brian Perera, owner of Cleopatra Records, declares “We’ve been fans of Powerman 5000 for years, watching how they have stuck to their guns throughout their career and maintained a high level of creative ambition and risk. They are a rare breed of electronic/industrial metal bands who have crossed over and gained fans from multiple genres. This new album is really going to shock the world and we are honored to be releasing it!”
Graspop Metal Meeting has confirmed LIMP BIZKIT as second headliner for Saturday June 28. Read below:
Two years ago LIMP BIZKIT amazed both friend and foe with a hard-hitting headlining show that topped off the second festival day. Their obstinate mix of nu-metal lavishly covered with a hip hop sauce was one of the day’s highlights and the crowd in front of the stage really let their hair down. This GMM-edition Fred Durst and friends will be providing top entertainment as headliner on Mainstage 2 on Saturday June 28. Their new album, ‘Stampede of the Disco Elephants’, is scheduled for an early 2014 release so there’s new material to look forward to as well. Judging by their previous GMM show we’re in for crazy costumes, the occasional striking cover and boundless live energy. These guys know how to whip an arena into a frenzy so come prepared.
Also confirmed: BEHEMOTH, TRIVIUM, MISS MAY I, CIVIL WAR, LYNCH BOB, STEEL PANTHER, SEBASTIAN BACH, RHAPSODY OF FIRE, WALKING PAPERS, PROTEST THE HERO, SEETHER, NILE, POWERMAN 5000
