John Lennon … memory of You will always be with us!
(Liverpool, 9 ottobre 1940 – New York, 8 dicembre 1980)
Kenneth Lance Patterson (a.k.a. “Willie Hicks”), bassist for the West Texas “southern oilfield trucker stoner” band PUMPJACK, passed away suddenly on November 9, 2011. He was 42 years old.
A longtime friend of the late “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott (PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN) and Dimebag‘s brother Vinnie Paul, Patterson was a member of the group GASOLINE, which Dimebag and PUMPJACK vocalist Thurber Mingus founded as a fun, alcohol-fueled side project for “good friends and anyone who would dare to risk having their ears burned off by listening.”
PUMPJACK took part in the 2000 Ozzfest and they opened for several national acts, including PANTERA, ANTHRAX and W.A.S.P.
Lance Patterson is survived by his wife, Nancy Patterson; stepchildren Tres and Lauren; his parents, Ken and Sylvia Patterson; his brother and sister-in-law, Monty and Chali Patterson; and his niece and nephew, Abby and Logan Patterson.

SLAVIA vocalist Jonas Christiansen was found dead in his apartment early this morning (Thursday, November 17) after battling colon cancer for the past few months. He was 31 years old.
On November 18, members of several high-profile Norwegian metal bands, including DARKTHRONE, SATYRICON and TAAKE, will take part in a live show called “Algir – Støttekonsert For Jonas R. Christiansen”, at Bergen’s prime rock venue, Garage, to raise awareness of colon cancer. In addition, HELHEIM, GRAVDAL and SLAVIA themselves will perform at the event that was originally intended to be a fund-raising concert, but will now go ahead as a memorial show for Christiansen.
Born and brought up in Kongsberg in the Eighties, Jonas Christiansen put his original band SLAVIA on hiatus and moved to Oslo to concentrate on Moonfog Productions‘ newly-signed band DISIPLIN in 2003. While their self-titled debut album quickly shot them onto the national and international stratosphere through their contagious, mid-tempo riffs intermittently layered around chilly black metal blast beats, it was their second album, “Anti-Life”, that saw the Norwegian ensemble truly owning their musical skills. As DISIPLIN went through a variety of personnel changes in 2005, Christiansen moved back to Bergen and resurrected his original project SLAVIA which released debut album, “Strength And Vision”, through Drakkar in 2007.
“Algir – Støttekonsert For Jonas R. Christiansen” participating artists:
* Nocturno Culto (DARKTHRONE)
* Satyr (SATYRICON)
* Frost (SATYRICON)
* Hoest (TAAKE)
* SLAVIA
* HELLHEIM
* GRAVDAL

GWAR frontman Dave Brockie (a.k.a. Oderus Urungus) has released the following statement to MetalSucks:
“It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their longtime guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR‘s current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long-term plans. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him.”
Cory joined GWAR in September 2002. Being a talented producer, he lent his technical skills to the recording of “War Party”, and co-produced, as well as co-mixed with Devin Townsend (STEVE VAI, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD) GWAR‘s 2006 release, titled “Beyond Hell”. The two albums were recorded at Karma Studios, owned and operated by Smoot.
Smoot was the longest-running Flattus and was in the videos for “War Party”, “Bring Back The Bomb”, “Womb With A View”, “School’s Out” and “Eighth Lock”. Smoot was considered by GWAR fans to be the “true Flattus“, as he was the longest-serving person to portray the character in GWAR history. Smoot also produced the follow-up to “Beyond Hell”, “Lust In Space”, along with other members of GWAR, and even sang lead vocals on the track “Release The Flies”. GWAR‘s latest release, “Bloody Pit Of Horror”, features a 12-minute epic of four songs strung together, which was largely the brainchild of Smoot. Originally he wrote the music for a solo project of his, but by the suggestion of Dave Brockie, it was reworked to become new GWAR material.
Below is a video interview with Cory Smoot conducted on August 12, 2010 at the Brutal Assault XV festival in the Czech Republic.

Mikko Laine, the guitarist of the Finnish metal band SOLE REMEDY, was killed in a traffic accident last night (October 2) in the Dutch municipality of Baarlo — just hours after the band’s performance at the ProgPower Europe festival. According to a spokesperson for the Sjiwa youth center (where the concert took place), the accident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. when Laine, who was sleeping next to a fence, was run over by a truck, which was loaded with the backline, instruments and other equipment, as the driver drove backwards and turned onto the road. The 50-year-old driver, a local man, didn’t see the Finn, who died at the site.
Note: The Dutch media erroneously reported that it was the band’s drummer, Henry Silmonen, who was killed in the accident.
Formed in 1998, SOLE REMEDY‘s sophomore album, “Apoptosis”, was released in September 2010 via Aftermath Music. The CD was described in a press release as the band’s “most ambitious and diverse piece of music to this day. There are moments of pure metal, pop and even an acoustic ballad. Alternative-progressive metal without losing the catchiness.”
