Syracuse.com have reported that the legendary vocalist Ronnie James Dio is to receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award tonight, Thursday March 6th, from the Syracuse Area Music Hall of Fame. The award comes nearly four years after his death from stomach cancer.
Dio‘s son, Dan Padavona, will be on hand to accept the award for his late father. “I was a rock fan and a huge fan of his music, especially Elf and Rainbow,” Padavona said, referring to several of his father’s early groups. “But most of what I knew was from reading in magazines. It was very surreal.”
Dio and Padavona‘s mother split when Padavona was four years old. He is candid about his somewhat distant relationship with his father growing up. But he’s nonetheless proud of the accomplishments of his father — one of the most influential artists to ever come from Upstate New York.
“I hope it’s a way to get closer to my father in his death than I did in his life,” he said of the award. “I’m sure he’d be very happy that I’m up there with Rock (David Feinstein) and a few of his closest friends.”
Today in Cortland, there’s a street named after Dio (Dio Way). The town holds “Dio Days” concerts in his honor. A banner flies downtown with his face on it. In 2004 the rocker was inducted into the Cortland High School Hall of Fame.
But much of this recognition was long overdue, says Dio‘s son, Dan Padavona.
“When he was alive, beyond his faithful friends, not a lot of people knew much about him other than there was this guy who went off and joined Black Sabbath,” Padavona said. “If you open the Cortland Standard all they talked about was who bowled a 300 the other night. Which was very true. I never once saw a mention in the paper of the fact that an album had gone platinum or anything like that. And he was as accomplished a person to come out of Cortland artistically as anyone else.”
From a young age, Dio cultivated a reputation as a gracious, amiable man. Despite the controlled furor that fueled his driving rock, he’s often remembered as a humble, quiet guy. He was class president in high school. He always made time for his fans.
“I once watched him stand in the rain for an hour greeting fans until he’d spoken with every one,” Maryjo Spillane (Tour Manager) said. “He truly cared about them.”
In 2008, Ronnie James Dio recorded a track called “Metal Will Never Die.” Ironically, it would be his last.
Dio has passed on, but the metal lives on, thanks, in large part, to his influence. Heads continue to bang. Guitars continue to shred. Ears drums continue to throb. And wherever there’s an angry young kid looking for an escape, Dio will be there with sound advice:
“Go, my son, and rock.”

According to Classic Rock Magazine, Eagle Rock have released a clip from upcoming DIO concert movie Live In London: Hammersmith Apollo – view the band’s performance of Mob Rules below.
It was filmed in December 1993 and featured late metal icon Ronnie James Dio with drummer Vinny Appice, guitarist Tracy G and bassist Jeff Pilson. They were touring in support of sixth album Strange Highways, which followed Dio and Appice having returned to Black Sabbath for 1992′s Dehumanizer album and tour.

RONNIE JAMES DIO is one of the most beloved figures in rock history. His gifts, both as a singer and songwriter, are instantly recognizable, whether he was with RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL, or leading DIO. Sadly, Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer in 2010 but his towering voice and legacy live on.
To celebrate one of rock’s most powerful voices, an all-star group of his friends and fans recorded 13 of their favorite tracks for a tribute album that will raise funds for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (Diocancerfund.org). Produced by his longtime manager and wife Wendy Dio, the album includes contributions by such metal heavyweights as METALLICA, MOTÖRHEAD, SCORPIONS, ANTHRAX, and ROB HALFORD, as well as appearances by many of the musicians who performed with Dio over the years.
On March 17th an exclusive VIP listening party for the album, This Is Your Life, will be held at the Avalon, CA. There will be a very limited number of Dio fan tickets for $25 each, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund. The event will include live performances by DIO members Jimmy Bain (bass) and Rowan Roberston (guitars), Corey Taylor (STONE SOUR, SLIPKNOT), Oni Logan (DIO DISCIPLES, ex-LYNCH MOB), Brian Tichy (S.U.N., ex-WHITESNAKE) and HALESTORM.

Although the songs featured on the album touch on the different eras of Dio’s career, several spotlight his time with Rainbow, including Metallica’s epic, nine-minute ‘Ronnie Rising Medley’, which combines the Rainbow songs ‘A Light In The Black’, ‘Tarot Woman’, ‘Stargazer’, and ‘Kill The King’. Scorpions add a scorching take on ‘The Temple Of The King’ while Motörhead is joined by Biff Byford from SAXON on ‘Starstruck’. Rob Halford teams with frequent Dio collaborators Vinny Appice, Doug Aldrich, Jeff Pilson, and Scott Warren for ‘The Man On The Silver Mountain’. The final lineup of Dio’s solo band – Simon Wright, Craig Goldy, Rudy Sarzo and Scott Warren – are joined by GLENN HUGHES (DEEP PURPLE, Black Sabbath) for ‘Catch The Rainbow’, a track from Rainbow’s 1975 debut.
Anthrax and ADRENALINE MOB honor Dio’s memorable stint with Black Sabbath with their takes on ‘Neon Knights’ and ‘The Mob Rules’ respectively, as does a group, led by Oni Logan on vocals along with Jimmy Bain, Rowan Robertson, and Brian Tichy, which performs ‘I’ from Dehumanizer.
This Is Your LIfe also includes songs from Dio’s back-to-back platinum albums Holy Diver (1983) and The Last In Line (1984), with DORO’s take on ‘Egypt (The Chains Are On)’, HALESTORM tackling ‘Straight Through The Heart’, COREY TAYLOR (STONE SOUR, SLIPKNOT) covering the classic ‘Rainbow In The Dark’ and TENACIOUS D (Jack Black and Kyle Glass) putting their signature spin on ‘The Last In Line’. KILLSWITCH ENGAGE’s cover of ‘Holy Diver’, a hit in its own right when released in 2006, is also included here.
Fittingly, Ronnie James Dio provides the finale (and the album’s title) with his moving performance of ‘This Is Your Life’. Originally released on Angry Machines (1996), the song’s lyrics explore mortality and are backed by a stark and beautiful arrangement that features Dio accompanied only by his longtime keyboardist Scott Warren on piano. The song serves as a poignant reminder that we will never hear a voice like Dio’s again.
The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, co-founded by Wendy Dio, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable fund dedicated to supporting cancer-prevention research, raising awareness and educating the public about the vital importance of early detection and prevention when dealing with this deadly disease.

A message from Metallica states: “Throughout the years we’ve made no secret of our deep love and admiration for Ronnie James Dio. Whether it was with Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell or Dio, his powerful voice was instantly recognizable and his music inspired and influenced the four of us tremendously. When we were asked to be a part of a tribute album for Ronnie, of course we immediately said “fuck yeah!” Choosing a song to record, however, was a MUCH harder decision… so we did four!”
The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund is a privately funded 501(c)(3) charity organization which has already raised more than $600,000 in its short history. Monies raised to date have been committed to the cancer research work of the T. J. Martell Foundation for Cancer, AIDS and Leukemia Research and the gastric cancer research unit of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where Ronnie was treated for gastric cancer during the last six months of his life.
