A privately funded 501(c)(3) charity organization dedicated to cancer prevention, research and education, the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund has already raised over $2 million in its short history. Monies raised have been committed to the cancer research work of the T. J. Martell Foundation for Cancer, AIDS and Leukemia Research, the gastric cancer research unit of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where Ronnie was treated for gastric cancer during the last six months of his life, and other cancer research projects. The Dio Cancer Fund has committed funds to support the research of Dr. David Wong and his team at the UCLA School of Dentistry in developing a simple, non-invasive saliva test for the early detection of cancer, which is in keeping with the Fund’s mission of cancer prevention, research and education.
“Steven Adler and Friends” All-Star Jam and Performances by Lynch Mob, Dio Disciples, Eddie Money, Rough Cutt, The Loveless, Sonia Harley and No Small Children Highlight Afternoon Concert in Los Encinos Park.
Despite the continuous threat of rain, the third annual RIDE FOR RONNIE Motorcycle Rally and Concert, held on Sunday, May 7, 2017, attracted motorcycle enthusiasts and rock music fans alike and raised $40,000 for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. Dio Cancer Fund co-founder and president Wendy Dio led the procession of some 200 motorcycle riders for the morning RIDE from Harley-Davidson of Glendale to Los Encinos Park in Encino. She was joined by Sons of Anarchy actors Emilio Rivera (and also star of the forthcoming Mayans MC series), Sean McNabb (who also performed with Lynch Mob at the concert) and Star Fields, as well as actors Al Coronel (The Last Ship) and Chris Bruno (The Dead Zone) and musicians Lita Ford, former Guns N’ Rosesguitarist Gilby Clarke, who claimed to be on the oldest bike in the RIDE and Xavier Muriel (Buckcherry), plus Dio Cancer Fund Medical Director Dr. Sandy Kapoor and KLOS Radio “Horns Up” show personality Stew Herrera.
The afternoon of live music following the RIDE, hostedby radio and television personality Eddie Trunk, was kicked off by the trio of rockin’ schoolteachers known as No Small Children. Performances by Sonia Harley, The Loveless, Eddie Money and Rough Cuttfollowed. Rough Cutt concluded its set with a performance of “Stars,” the song released in 1986 by Hear ‘N Aid, an organization spearheaded by the original Dio band to raise money for famine relief in Africa. Rough Cutt members Paul Shortino, Dave Alford, Amir Derakh, Chris Hager, and Matt Thorne were joined on stage by Lita Ford, Ronnie James Dio’s cousin David “Rock” Feinstein (Elf, The Rods), Brittany Denaro (Vixen), Patrick Stone (Budderside), Sean McNabb (Lynch Mob), Joe Retta, Bjorn Englen and Scott Warren of Dio Disciples, Ace Von Johnson (Faster Pussycat) and legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads’ brother Kelle Rhoads for the song.
Next up, Steven Adler and Friends took to the stage for an all-star jam featuring the Guns N’ Roses drummer along with Mike Devin (Whitesnake), Lita Ford, Robert Sarzo (Hurricane), Alex Grossi (Quiet Riot), Patrick Stone (Budderside) and Jeff Pilson (Foreigner and former Dio guitarist), playing three Guns N’ Roses hits.
Rousing sets by Dio Disciples and headliners Lynch Mob rounded out the afternoon of music. The threatening skies finally let loose during Lynch Mob‘s last song, drenching the audience as they headed out of the park.
A silent auction, raffle and live auction, which included Eddie Money‘s stage-worn full-length leather trenchcoat from his 2000 “Millennium Tour” and a Great White acoustic guitar signed by the band members brought in additional donations during the event.
Wendy Dio and Dr. Sandy Kapoor presented a check for $25,000 to Dr. David Wong of the UCLA School of Dentistry to further his team’s research into the development of a simple, non-invasive saliva test for the early detection of cancer. Dr. Wong told the crowd that the recognized support from the Dio Cancer Fund has already brought his project additional funding.
The family of Randy Rhoads-his sister Kathy Rhoads D’Argenzio and brother Kelle Rhoads-joined Wendy Dio on stage to show their support for the work of the Dio Cancer Fund, presenting the organization with a donation in memory of their late brother.
Additionally, 95.5 KLOS, Los Angeles’ premier rock radio station, came on board this year as an event sponsor and was out in force, bringing its Frosty, Heidi & Frank RV to Harley Davidson in Glendale for the start of the RIDE. KLOS radio personalities Melissa Maxx and Stew Herrera helped out with the hosting duties at the concert. Other event sponsors included Ninkasi Brewing Company, Graffiti Wine, Solar Rain Water, Harley-Davidson of Glendale, Law Tigers and Bigg Time Entertainment. Slammin Sliders, G’s Taco Spot, Hungry Nomad and Archie’s Ice Cream food trucks were on hand at the park.

The first Hall of Heavy Metal History was held at the Anaheim Expo Center on Wednesday, January 18, 2017, in Anaheim CA. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the “Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund”. Event was hosted by Eddie Trunk, which include performances by the Dio Disciples (Tim Ripper Owens) and many more
The Metal Voice spoke prior to CEO/Founder of ‘The Hall of Heavy Metal History’ Pat Gesualdo. This Annual Celebrity Ceremony and Benefit Concert.
When asked on how the idea for a Hall of Heavy Metal history came about
“It is something I developed because I saw the way that certain musicians were not being treated well from some of the major award shows. So I thought I need to do something about this and so I started the Hall for Heavy Metal History. I came up with the this idea to help honour those musicians are often over looked and ignored but are the pioneers of heavy metal.”
When asked how artists are inducted
“There is a whole team of people who vote. What we are going to start next year, is that we are going to open everything up to the general public, around the world, it has to be about the fans and I want their input 100%. Cause this is all about the fans and its all about the musicians”
What are the criteria in being inducted
“Album sales are important, what the artists have done in the industry and what have they been able to do as musicians. You will see that common thread between everybody inducted.
When asked why Rudy Sarzo was inducted
“Well Rudy is one of those musicians who has kept that torch burning bright, he is out there working his butt off and he has been such an iconic figure, through Ozzy, Quiet Riot, Whitesnake and all the other projects he has been involved with, so that’s definitely the criteria to look for in nominating somebody and he has sold 2.5 million albums. Also he has given back to society. Rudy Sarzo with his involvement in animals is phenomenal
When Asked why Don Airey was inducted
Don has played on over 300 albums isn’t that amazing and I guess all I really have to say is Mr Crowely. It’s so nice to see Don Airey being able to fill the roll in Deep Purple. Don Airy is another one playing sometime like 250 live dates a year, that’s just insane
The 2017 Hall Of Heavy Metal History inductees Include:
* Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio) (with Wendy Dio accepting the induction)
* Rudy Sarzo (formerly of Ozzy Osbourne and Whitesnake)
* Frankie Banali (Quiet Riot) (along with a special 33rd Anniversary induction of Quiet Riot, as the first band to achieve the #1 Heavy Metal Album status)

* Ross “The Boss” Friedman (ex-Manowar)
* Vinny Appice (formerly of Black Sabbath and Dio)
* Don Airey (Deep Purple)
* Andy Zildjian (President/CEO of Sabian Cymbals)
