SEPTICFLESH are painting an apocalyptic vision and make full use of their impressive musical palette consisting of death metal and orchestral colours on their tenth full-length, ‘Codex Omega’.
From their alpha EP ‘Temple of the Lost Race’ that was released one year after their founding in 1990, the Greek musicians have pushed the limits of the metal genre and continued to explore new sonic path with every following release from their debut album ‘Mystic Places of Dawn’ (1994) to the stunning ‘Sumerian Daemons’ (2003), which have in the meantime all been re-issued by Season of Mist.
Yet SEPTICFLESH had clearly come into their own sound when they unleashed their celebrated comeback album after a five-year hiatus that re-charged their artistic batteries. ‘Communion’ (2008) offered a well-balanced amalgamation of metal elements that were freely drawn from the darker side of the genre including death, black, and gothic metal with epic orchestral arrangements. This symphonic excellence was based on guitarist Christos Antoniou bringing to bear the fruits of his academic studies of classical composition, which he passed with honours and distinction.
With a clear musical compass to navigate, SEPTICFLESH continued to explore their sound and the compositional possibilities of this new-found metal continent. ‘The Great Mass’ (2011) and ‘Titan’ (2014) saw the Greeks evolving at fast speed and at the same time gathering adherents as well as critical praise in ever growing numbers. Extended touring on both sides of the Atlantic and performances at about every important festival further consolidated the bands burgeoning status.
Although the biblical omega marks the end, SEPTICFLESH on the contrary reached their current peak with ‘Codex Omega’ (2017), an album that clearly witnesses the Greek visionaries having come to maturity and expert craftsmanship in every sense.
Season of Mist has released a special 4 CD Box Set for Greek symphonic metal icons, SEPTICFLESH. ‘In the Flesh – Part I’ features the band’s first four albums, ‘Mystic Places,’ ‘Esoptron,’ ‘Ophidian Wheel,’ and ‘Fallen Temple’ bundled together in a 4CD Jewel Case along with a 16 page lyric booklet. The set has been released today and is available at the Season of Mist E-Shop and Bandcamp.
About ‘Mystic Places:’
SEPTICFLESH have established themselves as a leading force of symphonic Dark Metal with critically acclaimed masterpieces ‘Communion’ (’08) and ‘The Great Mass’ (’11). However, their long out-of-print debut full-length, ‘Mystic Places of Dawn,’ was somewhat of a cult phenomenon upon it original release in 1994. ‘Mystic…’ presented strong death metal overtones alongside elements that become SEPTICFLESH’s trademarks; their unique vocals, haunting guitar passages, and samples hinting at their classical influences. ‘Mystic Places of Dawn’ presents the foundation of this band’s crucial and intelligent metal.
About ‘Esoptron:’
‘Esoptron’ is the second studio album from Greek kings of black metal SEPTICFLESH. Infectious but yet pummeling hooks give way to melodic interludes and then suddenly break into heavy passages with tortured, shrieked vocals; ‘Esoptron’ showcases a young SEPTICFLESH further honing their craft and cementing themselves among the heavy metal elite.
About ‘Ophidian Wheel:’
‘Ophidian Wheel’, the third proper full-length from the Greek dark metal masters SEPTICFLESH, marks a critical turning point in the band’s career. On this album, SEPTICFLESH further expanded their musical vocabulary, and added female soprano vocalist Natalie Rassoulis. ‘Ophidian Wheel’ sees the band moving even further into the symphonic-laden and classically-tinged metal arrangements that have become their calling card.
About ‘A Fallen Temple:’
‘A Fallen Temple,’ the fourth full-length in the long-running career of Greek metal luminaries SEPTICFLESH, occupied a unique space in the band’s history upon its original release in ’98. The album featured re-recordings from their savage debut LP, ‘Temple of the Lost Race,’ interspersed amongst some of the band’s most avant-garde work to date. The heightened atmospherics, synthesized orchestration, and angelic soprano vocals affirmed the bold and adventurous creative direction the band had begun to follow, and was the perfect bridge to what was coming with 1999’s ‘Revolution DNA.’
Swedish innovative blackened death metallers DIABOLICAL are set to release their new album “Eclipse” on February 15th, watch below the first two songs from the album. Furthermore the band will be touring Europe with SEPTICFLESH and KRISIUN in March/April.
Stated the band: “2019 is looking to be a defining year for Diabolical. Our new album “Eclipse” will be released on February 15. It’s been a long and hard process and soon we will finally be able to share it with you all. In March/April we are touring five weeks with SEPTICFLESH and KRISIUN covering most of Europe, and after that we are looking to do even more shows. We are very much looking forward to play new songs for you and share thoughts and drinks with many of you during our travels throughout Europe. Fabulam novam scribemus vivimusque!”
More than twenty years after their formation in northern Sweden, innovative blackened death metallers DIABOLICAL proves to be more vital than ever and puts forth “Eclipse”, a concept album reflecting on the dark side of humanity that forces the listener to explore his own diabolical side. The album is a tour de force with spitting musical and aesthetic complexity swirling around a dense soundscape of excellently distilled and refined ideas, altogether forming a rare display of musical craftsmanship equaled by very few contemporary metal bands. With nine gracefully raging songs, “Eclipse” presents DIABOLICAL as a mature and sophisticated band on the rise to new heights.
In spring 2019, Greek symphonic death metal outfit, SEPTICFLESH, will embark on a massive 45 day long European tour through 22 countries.
Supported by Brazilian death metallers KRISIUN and Sweden’s DIABOLICAL, the “Codex Omega” European Tour 2019 will start in Essen and conclude in Ludwigsburg after almost two months on the road.
Just recently, the band announced a unique live event in which they will perform their characteristic brand of symphonic death metal accompanied by a full orchestra and choir featuring over 100 musicians! The show, which has already sold out, will take place at the Metropolitan Theater in Mexico City, on February 2nd 2019 and will be captured on film for a future DVD release.
SEPTICFLESH‘s unique blend of symphonic arrangements, avant garde elements, atmosphere and eviscerating extreme metal has been converting legions into fans since the 90s. Now, with a streak of modern classic albums under their belt such as “Sumerian Daemons” (2002), “Communion” (2008), “The Great Mass” (2011), “Titan” (2014), and now “Codex Omega” (2017) there seems to be no stopping this creative juggernaut.
SEPTICFLESH‘s latest album »Codex Omega« is the first to feature former DECAPITATED drummer Kerim “Krimh” Lechner. Months of hard work and experimentation crafted the album, and resulted in 10 compositions of dark sonic bliss. Lyrically and musically, »Codex Omega« is by far the most infernal release of SEPTICFLESH to date. The album was produced by highly acclaimed metal producer, Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH, KREATOR). Besides the orchestral side represented once again by the Filmharmonic Orchestra of Prague, the band utilised traditional instruments such as Oud and Duduk and also a 12 string electro-acoustic guitar, enhancing the mystical atmosphere of the compositions. Of course as always, »Codex Omega« is dominated by the relentless death guitar riffing and the pale melodies that are the trademark of SEPTICFLESH.
