SLAYER‘s Dave Lombardo, ANTHRAX‘ Charlie Benante and Keith Carlock (STEELY DAN, STING) perform LED ZEPPELIN‘s ‘Rock And Roll’ at D’Addario’s Artist Appreciation Party at NAMM 2013. They were joined by Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT guitarist), Kiko Loureiro (ANGRA guitarist), Marco Mendoza (BLACK STAR RIDERS bassist), Chris Wyse (OWL bassist) and Joey Belladonna (ANTHRAX singer).
SLAYER guitarist Kerry King is featured in a new video interview with Nick Tevelis at MetalObsession.net, conducted in March 1st in Melbourne, Australia during the Soundwave festival tour. Topics of discussion include the band’s next album, the status of guitarist Jeff Hanneman, and substitute members Gary Holt (guitars/EXODUS) and Jon Dette (drums/ANIMETAL USA, ex-Slayer). Australia’s “Purest Heavy Music Magazine” Heavy spoke with drummer John Dette, who recently completed double-duty, filling for both legendary SLAYER and ANTHRAX drummers, Dave Lombardo and Charlie Benante at this year’s Soundwave shows. Here are a few excerpts from the chat:
Dette on the possibilities of staying with Slayer:
“It’s baby steps right now. I think it would be too early for me to make a comment like that at this time, but all I can tell you is that we’re having a great time. It feels great on stage and everybody that’s actually at the shows and seen the shows, not just the fans, but even the crew on the side of the stage all have smiles on their faces so I must be doing something right and I guess we’ll see what the future brings.”
Slayer fans being up in arms when the news broke that Lombardo wouldn’t be touring Australia:
“Lombardo has been such an integral part of Slayer and it’s only natural for fans to feel upset right now. I mean I’m a Slayer fan first and, of course, I… paused a little bit when I heard the news, but… you’re never going to please everyone and the only thing that I can do… is give it the integrity that the music deserves then I feel that I’ve done my job and that’s all I can do. If the fans accept it then they accept it, if they don’t, they don’t, but that’s out of my control really.”
With Dette having replaced or filled in for Bostaph and Lombardo in Slayer and with Bostaph and Lombardo getting to record with both Slayer and TESTAMENT where Dette has only played with the bands; any animosity or grudges held?
“I don’t know how Dave feels. I haven’t spoken to Dave in a few weeks. I saw Dave back in January at the NAMM convention, which is a large music convention in California that happens every year, and… I’ve known both of those guys for years now obviously. I certainly don’t hold anything against them. There’s nothing to hold against them for the fact that they’ve recorded albums.” He continues “There’s no reason to hold a grudge on anything like that and as far as my history with Slayer in the past it’s just something that was so long ago. You know, it’s funny because when people start asking me questions about it again because of all of this has happened so suddenly I’m trying to remember because it was literally 16 years ago when I was in the band… I think that obviously Bostaph has done an amazing job with his time in Slayer and he’s done an amazing job in Testament as well and it’s great that he’s still on there playing and I’m sure regardless of what happens with Dave, if he comes back to Slayer, great, if he goes on and does other things I’m sure whatever he does will be phenomenal as well.”

California thrash metal veterans SLAYER performed with only two original members on stage as part of this year’s Soundwave festival, which took place in five Australian cities between February 23 and March 4.

David Farrier from Australia’s 3 News spoke with SLAYER frontman Tom Araya during the band’s Soundwave appearance in Australia recently where he had just played to 25,000 people.
“To me it’s all new, to me it’s always new,” he says. “When we play to big crowds it still surprises me.”
“The only difference with me now is I can’t headbang anymore as I have a plate,” Araya adds. “I can’t do that which is a bum out. That’s something I enjoy doing, and now I can’t. It’s an internal struggle, you know what I mean? I can still go out there and scream my ass off, and play a mean bass and smile a lot.”
Former (?) SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo has responded to the outpouring of support since he was replaced by Jon Dette (also ANTHRAX) on the band’s trip Down Under to Australia’s Soundwave 2013.
“I have always known that my fans were awesome! But never has it been more clear to me than in the past two weeks, how passionate, supportive and sincere you really are. Thank you for all your kind responses and I hope to see you all very soon.”
Lombardo claims he wasn’t paid for the band’s 2012 tour (aside from a small advance), and that he was told he would not be paid until he signed a long form contract which gave him no written assurance of how much or on what basis management would deduct commissions, nor did it provide him access to the financial budgets or records for review. It also forbade him to do interviews or make statements having to do with the band, in effect a gagging order. Read his full statement here.
Slayer’s statement about Lombardo reads as follows:
“As regards [to] Dave Lombardo’s Facebook post, Slayer does not agree with Mr. Lombardo’s substance or the timeline of the events, except to acknowledge that Mr. Lombardo came to the band less than a week before their scheduled departure for Australia to present an entirely new set of terms for his engagement that were contrary to those that had been previously agreed upon. The band was unable to reach an agreement on these new demands in the short amount of time available prior to leaving for Australia. There is more to the account than what Mr. Lombardo has offered, but out of respect to him, Slayer will not be commenting further.”
