As the title suggests we’re not reinventing the wheel here by any means. It’s classic metal, that range from hardrock to death metal and everything in between, all according to SNOWY SHAW (multi-talented worldwide underground superstar formerly of King Diamond, Notre Dame, Therion, Dimmu Borgir, Dream Evil, Mercyful Fate, Memento Mori etc.)
But! make no mistakes, Snowy is not what one would call a conventional or predictable man, and there are quite a few things that are exceptional and downright groundbreaking about this album (or collection of singles.)
First of all, instead of putting out a full length album of 12 songs, during the pandemic year of 2021 Snowy opted to swap things around and release 1 single each and every month (digitally) throughout the year and then in time for X-mas release a limited edition physical double vinyl and digiCD with the collection of songs + no less than 4 bonus tracks. Where on each track he also invited special guest stars to contribute consisting of several of his teenage heroes, living legends, former bandmates and friends to as guest stars. Including members from King Diamond, Therion, Ozzy Osbourne, Dark Funeral, Mercyful Fate, Death SS, Doro, Hardcore Superstar, Mustasch, Torch, Dream Evil, Lillasyster, U.D.O, Arch Enemy, Sabaton, Soilwork, Raubtier, Erika, Ross The Boss, Amaranthe among many others
Sadly during the recording process some of his old heroes eventually had to cancel their participation due to health issues and even more tragically a few of them passed away. R.I.P. “Their legacy lives on”
Since Christmas 2022 the album is now available on all digital platforms.
In 2021 Renowned multi-instrumentalist & vocalist SNOWY SHAW took upon himself to record and release 1 single song per month digitally through all streaming services, and then after X-Mas of that year came the whole collection on full-length double LP & CD under the moniker of “This is Heavy Metal, plain & simple” + several bonus tracks.
Every song was done separately in Snowy’s Hellhaus Studio and each song featured a special guest-star appearance (or more) This album was in essence a tribute to the music that formed and shaped our lives and therefore he took upon himself to invite an array of his teenage heroes, living legends, former bandmates and friends to participate on specifically selected tracks on vocals, duets or with a guest guitar solo etc.
Anyhow, now it’s been a while and he thought it’d be a good idea to also put out the aforementioned bonus tracks as a digital EP, slightly modified and remixed, but after some consideration he opted to repeat a similar method as with the 12 songs. So here we’re looking at 5 separate single releases roughly every 3 weeks until X-Mas 2022!
All music & lyrics written, produced, recorded and performed by Snowy Shaw. Mixed by Fredrik Nordström, Johan Forsman and himself. As usual all the designs and artwork were done by Snowy himself.
This week we have “Devil’s Child”
Snowy himself adds:
“Devil’s Child Is a song I’ve had lying around since 2006 intended for one of my many other former bands, and that I now finalized during the pandemic where I also invited one of my childhood heroes, the female rocker Suzi Quatro for a guest appearance duet. One of the main lyrical lines is “Can’t you see – the Devil in Me” which coincidentely was the title of her new album which may have caused confusion and conflict of interest according to her label. Instead the female counterpart in the duet landed on the impressive German rising star Elli Berlin, who did an amazing job. Happy ending”.
Devil’s Child is available on all streaming platforms right now!
The Metal Voice recently spoke to former Mercyful Fate and King Diamond drummer Snowy Shaw. Watch the interview below.
Excerpts from the interview
When asked if the band Ghost who is also from Sweden took his stage ideas and made them popular “You are certainly were not the first to ask about that. Gus G the guitar player told me, WTF this band (Ghost) is getting so popular they are doing what you did with Notre Dame way back. I suppose but it all stems from, Author Brown starting off with corpse paint, then it was Alice Cooper, onto Kiss onto this theatrical thing. We all take bits and pieces and copy and inspire and do our own thing and do our own version of it. King Diamond is also a result of Welcome to my nightmare (Alice Cooper), that kind of theatrical show. I want to say that Ghost hasn’t ripped me off but they have certainly managed to make it big.”
When asked if he was a little disappointed in not being asked to participate in the upcoming Mercyful Fate reunion “I’m not upset. My wife she called me from work and said I saw Mercyful Fate is getting back together weren’t you involved in that band? Yes I was but what lineup is it? So I called Mike Weed (guitarist) cause apparently he is going to be in the reunion. So it means that Michael Denner is not going to be there. Who is playing the drums then? Is it Bjame (Holm) who replaced me he (Weed) said we are going to continue from the last album 9 and we are going to pick it up from there. And I said how about Sharlee D’Angelo (bassist on 9) . No we haven’t contacted him, it’s going to be Joey Vera (Armored Saint). I don’t want to get involved in that I wasn’t upset. I haven’t been in that band for many years. I rather move forward and take on new challenges rather than go backwards. “
When asked if it bothered him that they used a drum machine on the King Diamond’s album The Eye “It’s not a drum machine. The thing is I kind of regret spilling the beans or maybe a slip of the tongue. I was doing this interview with Borivoj Krgin for Metal Maniacs magazine (at the time) when we were doing the Memento Mori album in 1993. And he said wow I love the drumming (The Eye), it’s so technical and progressive and I said yeah it was a drum machine. My English was so- so, even worse back then (Snowy eludes to that he misspoke using the wrong choice of words due to lack of English skills at the time). But it wasn’t a drum machine obviously. I was playing on pads and parts were sort of programmed because that was what King insisted on doing. We didn’t have any time to rehearse or do anything like that was kind of their justification for that and I couldn’t understand it. It wasn’t a drum machine.
Renowned from bands like King Diamond, Sabaton, Mercyful Fate, Therion, Dream Evil, Dimmu Borgir, Notre Dame, Memento Mori, Denner/Shermann etc., multi-instrumentalist SNOWY SHAW will soon be unleashing his autobiography, ‘The Book of Heavy Metal’(named after his most popular anthem to date, written for former band Dream Evil). The book’s release date will soon be announced, and will be available for purchase via http://www.steelcartel.com/snowyshaw (USA).
From the camps of all the aforementioned bands, Snowy is the first to spill the beans and tell it all. His version of the truth. It’s an extremely openhearted and revealing story of all the ups and downs a crazy rock n´ rollercoaster life at ‘Tivoli Shaw’. Often draped in cynical sarcasm, awkward truths and black humor.
The multi-talented Snowy Shaw has been called a “Worldwide Underground Superstar”. After more than 30 years of touring the world he has earned himself a rock solid reputation as one of the most hardworking, multifaceted ‘art-ist’ with loads of groundbreaking creativity and integrity.
In 2018, his highly acclaimed solo debut, ‘White Is the New Black,’ got nothing but absolutely top notch reviews worldwide, and was nominated “Best Rock/Metal Album of the Year” in no less than 5 countries.
‘The Book of Heavy Metal’ will be available as a limited deluxe edition hardback heavy brick of 464 pages, beautifully designed and decorated with loads of memorabilia and tons of never before seen footage from his private collection. Autographed, numbered with a personal dedication to YOU!
The book’s foreword is by Shaw’s longtime friend, youth idol and mentor Mikkey Dee (Motörhead, King Diamond, Scorpions). According to him, like too many rock biographies in the last few decades, this is not the typical romanticized Cinderella story, this is the real deal. A must read!
On Saturday, July 25th Shaw will have an online official book release party from his headquarters in Sweden (he calls the HellHaus). That date is special because it is also his birthday! Shaw will be conducting online signings to people who have pre-ordered the book and also a live performance of a few songs, will read some passages, and tell stories. The event will be live streamed on Facebook from 7:00-9:00 P.M UTC and here is the event page link: https://www.facebook.com/events/333275477673842/
Legendary multi-instrumentalist and vocalist SNOWY SHAW (well known for his work with KING DIAMOND, DIMMU BORGIR, THERION, NOTRE DAME, DREAM EVIL and more) is preparing to release his first solo album “White Is The New Black”, due for release on 23rd of May in Europe and Japan, and digitally worldwide. The album is all written, performed and produced by Snowy Shaw for Wunderwurld Music & Films.
Snowy will be hosting a release party for the forthcoming album, which is set to be live streamed to the world on Saturday 21st April. I recently had a long chat with Snowy about the album, release party, tour news, glam rock and more! Check out some excerpts below and the full interview can be heard on the audio player:
Snowy revealed the following details about his live stream release party:
“It will reach out to a lot of people, because people feel it’s nice to interact with the artist and get to know them more personally. A lot of bands in the past might throw a release party at a local rock club and invite a couple of hundred friends and that’s fine. But I decided to do it a little bit more personal, so I am actually inviting the whole wide world potentially, to my own home.
I will be interacting with people during the whole evening and we’ll play live, there will be Q and A’s, we’ll be selling the albums, I’ll be signing stuff and we’ll be partying! There’s gonna be a lot of friends that I’ve invited to my house, famous faces from the area of Gothenburg – which has tons of bands like In Flames, Mikkey Dee, Hardcore Superstar. We have a professional film team here, so it’s gonna be like Big Brother – those overview cameras placed in various rooms in my big house. So it’s gonna be in the basement, in the studio, in the drum room. I’m going to introduce you to our dogs – it’s definitely something you don’t want to miss.”
Discussing his solo work, Snowy explained:
“Life itself has a tendency of putting a lot of obstacles in the way, things take time. For me, I mean I’ve been with so many bands over the years, ranging from everything from black metal with Dimmu Borgir to Triple X which is like glam rock, more seventies style and everything in between – you know like progressive doom metal and doom and so on. It’s not a coincidence that I’ve been in all those bands, it’s because I like the diversity and variation and if I do something for too long I tend to get sort of fed up with that and need to move on to something else, new adventures and challenges and so on. I’ve also been in a creative mode in many of those bands and been writing the bulk of the material and so on.
So now when I decided to go sort of under my own flag with my namesake so called band, I couldn’t really make up my mind exactly what I wanted to do. I tend to be so intense that I sort of overdose on it or something (laughs). The ideal situation for me would be to have say, four different bands with different musical direction and lyrical concept and sound and all that. But then I remembered how difficult it is to pull that thing together with four or five people these days, so I ditched that idea for the moment.
Then I figured what stops me from doing it all under my own name and different projects and allowing myself that complete artistic freedom to do that. I wrote independently and went into those different little worlds and that’s basically what this album is all about. Let’s say they are samples, let’s say it’s twelve songs in total and it’s two songs from six different albums with different directions. So this is like samples from albums that are gonna be released every year from now on. It’s the ‘Essential Snowy Shaw’ or ‘Greatest Hits’ in reverse.”
