THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER will be touring in support of their critically adored tenth studio album, Servitude, released in 2024 via Metal Blade Records.
“At a brisk thirty-three minutes, there’s no real fat, just a collection of raging riffs and solid gold grooves that never overstays its welcome…,” lauded Blabbermouth. “Whether wallowing in grim, doomy waters on ‘Mammoth’s Hand,’ or blasting away like some crazed, nihilistic army of intergalactic ghouls on ‘Transcosmic Blueprint’ and climactic hook avalanche ‘Utopia Black,’ this is an album that nobly delivers the goods, while screaming defiance at the stars. Everybody involved should be immensely proud.” Metal Injection accurately hailed a record of, “fucking killer death metal,” Distorted Sound crowned THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, “one of melodeath’s greatest, most consistent bands,” while Kerrang wrote, “…the release of Servitude faces down existential concerns with determination and defiance.” Added Last Rites, “Servitude doesn’t feel like a debut because it’s unpolished or full of missteps; it feels like a debut because it’s brimming with a fresh energy and feels like it’s only hinting at what could be in store.”
THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER unleash their latest video for “Panic Hysteric.” The fiery new tune comes off the band’s tenth studio album, Servitude, out now on Metal Blade Records.
“Panic Hysteric” is a modern, classic TBDM waltz in the time-honored Swedish style. “Lyrically, it’s a tribute to the fear and outrage that rock and roll ignited in mid-century America,” elaborates vocalist Brian Eschbach. “I was reading quotes from Frank Sinatra, who really didn’t like rock ‘n’ roll, and was pretty eloquent about it. I quoted him a couple of times in the song. That was a fun Sunday writing those lyrics. I’m not gonna lie – vodkas and Shirley Temples were involved.”

“The highest praise one could give [Servitude] is that it sounds like the kind of death metal record [late vocalist Trevor] Strnad himself would’ve loved,” writes Decibel Magazine, who recently featured the band on their 20th anniversary issue. “At a brisk thirty-three minutes, there’s no real fat, just a collection of raging riffs and solid gold grooves that never overstays its welcome…” Blabbermouth concurs, “THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER could have taken a prolonged hiatus and returned a few years down the road, refreshed and reinvented. But fuck that. Whether wallowing in grim, doomy waters on ‘Mammoth’s Hand,’ or blasting away like some crazed, nihilistic army of intergalactic ghouls on ‘Transcosmic Blueprint’ and climactic hook avalanche ‘Utopia Black,’ this is an album that nobly delivers the goods, while screaming defiance at the stars. Everybody involved should be immensely proud. The saga continues.” Adds Kerrang, “…the release of Servitude faces down existential concerns with determination and defiance. Forged from tragedy and loss, it honors their fallen friend while celebrating the survival of THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER as an ongoing entity.“
Guitars, bass, and vocals for Servitude were recorded at guitarist Brandon Ellis’ home studio in New Jersey while drums were recorded by Mark Lewis in Nashville, Tennessee where the album was also mixed. Servitude was mastered by Ted Jensen.

With the tragic passing of the THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER‘s frontman and co-founder Trevor Strnad in 2022, band co-founder Brian Eschbach, bassist Max Lavelle, drummer Alan Cassidy, and producer/guitarist Brandon Ellis were faced with a decision: Close the door on one of the most beloved death metal bands or carry on in their fallen brother’s charismatic spirit? After a period of profound grief and soul-searching, Eschbach moved from guitar to vocals, setting aside his lifelong identity as a live guitarist for the survival of the band. Former THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER member Ryan Knight returned to the fold to take Eschbach’s place on guitar. The new lineup made their debut in the band’s hometown of Detroit in late October 2022 for a tribute show for Strnad.
Fast forward to now: THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER‘s new album is the one that many would have thought impossible. Servitude marks Eschbach’s recorded debut as THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER‘s lead vocalist and lyricist-and their first with Knight on guitar since 2015’s Abysmal.

“Mammoth’s Hand” is the latest single from THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER. The track comes by way of the band’s upcoming tenth studio album, Servitude, set for release on September 27th via Metal Blade Records.
“Mammoth’s Hand” is partly inspired by a scene from Don Coscarelli’s 1982 swords ‘n’ sorcery epic, The Beastmaster. “We usually like to give some idea of what kind of diversity is gonna be on the album with the first two tracks we release,” vocalist Brian Eschbach offers. “[guitarist] Ryan Knight wrote the music for this, and the slow rhythm made me think of these barbaric warriors riding mammoths out in the snow or that scene from The Beastmaster when the Jun horde takes the village.”
Eschbach further elaborates, “‘Mammoth’s Hand’ is a romp through a fictitious frozen tundra in which a clan of nomadic mammoth riding cannibals conquer villages in a time devoid of technology. The slow groove of this song is a vibe not often implemented by the group but immediately inspired a vision in my mind of a slow moving yet gigantic and powerful beast of antagonistic nature.”
Watch below THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER‘s video for “Mammoth’s Hand,” created by Marco Pavone.
THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER‘s first single from Servitude, “Aftermath,” was released in June to mass critical acclaim. Wrote Revolver upon its release, “THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER’s much-anticipated comeback single – the band’s first piece of new music since the passing of founding vocalist Trevor Strnad – is both a graceful return to form, and a ruthlessly ripping masterclass in death-metal dynamics.”
Loudwire hailed, “a lean, three-minute ripper and it’s this quality that drove the melodic death metal icons to lead with.” Consequence called the track, “a crushing introduction to this new chapter for THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER,” BrooklynVegan championed, “a melodeath rager that sounds like something Trevor would’ve been proud of,” while Metal Injection gushed, “As for the single itself, holy shit – THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER is doing Trevor’s memory justice while simultaneously putting out some fucking killer death metal.“

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER will release their tenth studio album, Servitude, on September 27th via Metal Blade Records, today unveiling the record’s first single and pre-orders.
“Before the tragedy, no one ever thought this band was going to exist without Trevor.”
That’s THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER‘s co-founder Brian Eschbach telling it like it is. With the tragic passing of the band’s frontman and co-founder Trevor Strnad in 2022, Eschbach, bassist Max Lavelle, drummer Alan Cassidy, and producer/guitarist Brandon Ellis were faced with a decision: Close the door on one of the most beloved death metal bands of the last twenty years, or carry on in their fallen brother’s charismatic spirit?
“Everyone that’s in the band now is someone that Trevor and I searched for,” Eschbach says. “We spent so much time on the road together that everyone understands the mission statement. We don’t really need to talk about it. We just need to make great music and try to make people happy playing it.”
After a period of profound grief and deep soul-searching, Eschbach moved from guitar to vocals, setting aside his lifelong identity as a live guitarist for the survival of the band. Former THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER member Ryan Knight returned to the fold to take Eschbach’s place on guitar. The new lineup made their debut in TBDM‘s hometown of Detroit in late October 2022 for a tribute show for Strnad.
Fast forward to right about now: THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER‘s new album is the one that many would have thought impossible. Servitude marks Eschbach’s recorded debut as THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER‘s lead vocalist and lyricist – and their first with Knight on guitar since 2015’s Abysmal.
“I just had to lean into it hard,” Eschbach says of approaching Servitude in a completely new role. “Honestly, writing the lyrics for this album was easier for me than writing the music for the three songs that I wrote music for. I’d pick a subject, research it, and just kinda dive in. Even though it’s not something I’d really ever done before, there was a natural flow to it once I started.”
You can hear the thrilling results on “Aftermath,” the ripping lead single, which envisions a post-apocalyptic cannibal scenario. “We wanted that one to be heard first because it’s one of the faster songs on the album, if not the fastest,” Eschbach says. “We wanted that very aggressive BLACK DAHLIA melodic death metal feel coming right at you. Lyrically, it’s about a meteor that fucks up the whole planet, but there’s still people living. Kind of like The Walking Dead, but with no zombies-so you get right to how people deal with it. And by the end, they’re eating each other.”

The Black Dahlia Murder‘s last full-length, Verminous, was released in 2021 via Metal Blade Records. Without compromising a scrap of heaviness, the record stands among the band’s most dynamic, rousing, and emotional releases to date. Louder Sound crowned Verminous, “absolutely excellent,” while Blabbermouth wrote, “This is a deeper and smarter realization of the Michigan crew’s tried and tested formula, and one blessed with several of the finest songs they have ever written… File next to Nocturnal and Ritual as an unquestionable career peak.”
The Black Dahlia Murder has recently finished recording their next full-length album with longtime producer Mark Lewis at his studio in TN. More news on the upcoming album will be released over the year so be sure to keep eyes on the band’s and Metal Blade’s socials for updates.
About the band: The Black Dahlia Murder has proven, despite tragedy, to be an unstoppable force. Formed in Oak Park, MI, in 2001, the melodic death unit has spent two decades working their collective ass off in the near-relentless cycle of drop-killer-album/tour-hard-and-long, earning the love and respect of the metal community.
The Black Dahlia Murder‘s most recent full-length, Verminous, was released on April 17, 2020, via Metal Blade Records. Without compromising one iota of heaviness, the record stands among the band’s most dynamic, rousing, and emotional releases to date.
Unfortunately, in May 2022 the band were dealt a crushing blow with the suicide of larger-than-life vocalist – and co-founder – Trevor Strnad at the age of 41, those close to him believing the mental health problems he had long dealt with were behind him at this juncture. Understandably, the members were left reeling by this, and spent many days racked with grief and wondering if this meant the band was over. But having put so many years of work and love into the band no one was willing to give up on it, with the decision made for guitarist – and founding member – Brian Eschbach to step into the vacated vocalist position with former guitarist Ryan Knight returning to take his spot, alongside guitarist Brandon Ellis, drummer Alan Cassidy and bassist Max Lavelle, who have all racked up many years with The Black Dahlia Murder.
The Black Dahlia Murder took to the stage with the reformed lineup consisting of remaining and returning members of the band playing a hometown memorial show for Trevor Strnad at Detroit’s Saint Andrew’s Hall on Oct. 28, 2022. In April of 2023, the band headlined Decibel Magazine‘s Beer & Metal Fest in Philly, which kicked off the start of the band’s North America Verminous Remnant Tour that featured support from Terror, Frozen Soul, Fuming Mouth, and Phobophilic and marked the band’s final tour promoting the album Verminous.
The Black Dahlia Murder had a final string of one-off performances in September 2023 including stops at Virginia’s Blue Ridge Rock Fest and Worcester, Mass’ New England Metal & Hardcore Fest before taking time off of the road to focus on writing and recording their 10th full-length studio album, which was recently completed and now in the final stages of mastering.
