Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to DEATH ANGEL singer Mark Osegueda at The NAMM Show 2018 on January 26 at the TASCAM and Nuclear Blast Booth.
Watch the interview here:
When asked if Death Angel has been working on new Material a follow-up to their last album The Evil Divide released in 2016
“That is what this year is pretty much dedicated to for Death Angel. We started the writing process we are at the very embryonic stage of it but planning to have the whole thing written, recorded and mixed by the end of the year 2018. “
When asked what was it like fronting a Thrash band in his Teenage years with Death Angel
“It was incredibly a wonderful, wonderful experience I did not know anything else. We were very fortunate that people liked our music and we were signed and we out a record when the thrash metal scene was coming out. Thrash was getting big everywhere. We were part of this underground thing that was happening getting to travel the world, play music and meet fans that were our age and a little bit older. “
When asked how accepting it was 30 years ago when the band started out to be a young US Pilipino band playing thrash
“We were from San Francisco bay area, which was a melting pot and a creative force in music and art at that time. In the Bay area, it was no big deal. Then we started traveling and touring North America, it was a completely different bag of beans when we hit certain parts of the States that did not really know what to make of us. A night walking to a truck stop in the South back then at two in the morning a bunch of ethnic teenage kids the looks we would get was definitely something special. “
When asked about the musical direction of the next album
“This will be the forth album with this lineup, the most albums ever by DEATH Angel with the same lineup. We are going to stay with the same producer Jason Suecof. We are going to stick to the same formulas, it is going to be aggressive in your face but I think our arsenal has a lot more varied like on the last album The Evil Divide, the song LOST. We always have our own subtle nuances that we throw in that other thrash bands just don’t do and I think that‘s what separates us from them. I do not know if it is a better thing but it is an original thing and that is what we always strive for.”
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to, Sons of Apollo, Metal Allegiance and former Dream Theater Drummer Mike Portnoy at The NAMM Show 2018 on January 26 2018 at the Tascam and Nuclear Blast Booth. Portnoy talked about the formation of the Metal Allegiance, Sons of Apollo shows and his 18-year-old son Max Portnoy following his dad’s footsteps as a drummer.
Watch the interview here:
When asked for some background on the Metal Allegiance for the fans who are unfamiliar
“It started many years ago as a bunch of friends, me and the guys from Testament, Megadeth, Pantera and Anthrax, we are all buddies for so many years. We are all still Metal fans we still love Kiss, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, so we started doing these shows where we started jamming for fun, playing covers and after a few years, a few of us the core four, David Ellefson, myself, Alex Skolnick from Testament and Mark Menghi who is the mastermind behind it. The four of us decided let’s make an album of original music we did that with the first album a couple of years ago, great experience and now we have a second album coming out at the beginning of the summer. The Album is done and it will be out June 1018.”
When asked if Sons of Apollo is a real band in the traditional sense
I think Sons of Apollo will be very similar to the Winery Dogs. Winery Dogs went on the road for years playing hundreds of shows really building up the fan base as a band. Sons of Apollo will have the same work ethic. Everything I do there is a fine line between a project and a band, it’s just a title. To me everything I do is a band; it is just a question of how much we can work together. We are committed to it in Sons of Apollo and we are going to spend all of 2018 on the road together.”
When asked why he has decided to go back to the Prog Style with Sons of Apollo after leaving Dream Theater
“I never abandoned it, it is always going to be a part of me, and it is just after leaving Dream Theater I wanted to try different styles, different sounds. Metal Allegiance is Thrash and Winery Dogs is more Classic rock. That style of music that Dream Theater does is always going to be a part of me. It was Derek Sherinian that was nudging at me let us do it. Then, we did it. Once we started writing it went beyond the Dream Theater world, now it is sort of a hard rock, Metal progressive thing and Jeff Scott Soto brings a whole lot of soulful anchor to the whole thing.”
When asked if he would ever consider doing a Sons of Apollo, Dream theater special night
“It is not out of the question, it might be weird for me to be opening for the band that I formed and built for 25 years. However, I never say never. “
SONS OF APOLLO’s debut album, “Psychotic Symphony”, was released October 20 by InsideOut Music.

Watch the interview here:
When asked why he got into the Coffee business
“Cause I drink coffee everyday, I don’t even play music everyday and so it’s kind of a natural fit. I have been drinking Coffee pretty much my whole adult life. “
When asked about a Megadeth update on future initiatives
“Just this week we announced the 35 year anniversary of Megadeth. That is 15 studio albums. Therefore, we are going to honour an album per month throughout the year, sometimes two a month. This month is Dystopia and So Far. So good. So What? Which both came out in the month of January? We are honouring them by postings and probably in the live shows, we are going to incorporate more of those songs from those albums. There are also some merchandising for fans. Just making a whole extravaganza to thank our fans for giving us 35 years of the band.”
When asked if being public about his Christian faith if it can cause tensions in the Metal genre
“Faith is always a tough thing, quite honestly until I wrote my Autobiography I never did talk too much about it because there is so much prejudice about it. Kind of like watch what we do not what we say is the ultimate testimony of faith belief but you know we are all human. We are under satanic attack of the sinful fallen nature that the bible talks about from the beginning of time. None of us is perfect. I see people fall the hardest when they start to have a little success because human nature is we start to take credit for our success, what I did , rather then what he (God) did. I have been an atheist, Christian, Agnostic and somewhere in between. I got into as serious drug and alcohol habit and when I got sobered up, when I got clean that is when I sort of realized the reliance on a higher power thing.”
When asked what stage Megadeth is in writing a new album
It’s just getting started I’m thinking it’s going to be next year 2019 before we really get anything out but we are working on the album this year that’s the goal in the midst of the 35 year anniversary of Megadeth. We want to take our time and really make a great record. We took our time with Dystopia and that diligence paid off.”
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voice interviewed Gary Holt Guitarist of SLAYER/EXODUS at the Hall of Heavy Metal History where Holt was accepting the induction for Exodus. On the red Carpet Holt was asked if there would be a final Slayer album, “No.. No there is no new album. I would say it’s a no. My name is Gary No comment Holt today.”
When asked about an update on the new Exodus album he said, “I have been writing the new Exodus material, I’m taking my time, I’m super proud of it, it’s heavy of course, it’s crushing, it’s brutal, it’s something else, it’s something all together different. “
