Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voicespoke to ex W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes who is getting ready to do an extensive Canadian tour in April / May 2020.
In the interview Holmes talks about the song set list for his upcoming Canadian tour this April; his upcoming new studio album; plans to write an autobiography and details about his recently completed documentary.
On his song set list for his upcoming Canadian tour April / May 2020
“The show starts with ‘On your Knees'(W.A.S.P.), then ‘Get With it’, ‘Let it Roar’ (solo album), ‘Love Machine’, ‘Sleeping in the Fire’ (W.A.S.P.), ‘The Devil Made me do it’, ‘Had Enough’, ‘I am what I am’ (solo albums), Blind In Texas (W.A.S.P.), ‘Born Work Die’ (solo album), ‘Wild Child’ , ‘Animal’, ‘9 5 Nasty (W.A.S.P.) and at the end I play a few cover songs. ‘Born to be Wild’ (Steppenwolf), ‘War Pigs’ (Black Sabbath), ‘Fortunate Son’ (C.C.R.) and then end the night with ‘Rocking in the Free World’ (Neil Young). So nine songs from W.A.S.P. , about eight from my solo albums and some cover tunes.” My backing band is from Canada and they are called ‘Phoenix in Flames’, they will do good, it will be great.”
On details about his upcoming new solo album
“I got all the songs written, we just have to record them. The musical direction is hard to explain I don’t go towards some direction. There is a song like Black Sabbath in there it’s real heavy slow called ‘Touch Me and Die’ and there is a ballad called ‘It’s In God’s Hands’. The songs off the ‘Under The Influence’ E.P. (2018) that I just did will be part of the new album. My favorite song off the new E.P. album is ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ because the song is written about me as a teenager. All the songs are on my computer all we have to do now is have the drummer play to them live. The album should be done before the end of this year. The album is heavier than the debut W.A.S.P. album.”
On details of his upcoming documentary “The documentary is about me starting over in Europe. It goes back five years to the first band members I had and going out on the road. There are interviews with people at the shows and what goes on at the shows. The guy doing the documentary also went to Los Angeles and talked to a lot of my friends in the past, my sister is in there, he went and visited my mom. I think he talked to my uncle and a bunch of people I played with in LA over the years. He also interviewed some people I knew in high school that were roadies in W.A.S.P. A trailer should be released at the end of May 2020 and the documentary should be released before the end of the year.”
On his upcoming Autobiography
“I found out at about 36 years old that I had dyslexia, never knew it before. So I started writing a book a few years ago, in my own handwriting they way I write. One sentence is a whole paragraph to me the way I write. I started writing about the first time I ever heard of music as a child, nine or ten. What my influences were, what my mom listened to as a kid and how that influenced me. How I got my first guitar, going to high school, my bother taking me to concerts. I got up to 16 years old and I stopped. Now we are looking for someone to complete the book and publish.”
Growing up with Van Halen in Pasadena California
“If it wasn’t for Eddie Van Halen I wouldn’t play guitar the way I do, I would not have the sound that I have. We hung out back in the day. Eddie even borrowed a guitar of mine for the second (Van Halen) album. As for David Lee Roth he has always been the same. I have some friend who went to high school with him and they said he was the same in high school as he is today. Dave never had the best voice but it had charisma and it was unique and what he sang about you can’t beat it. Van Halen as a band was in a class of their own.”
Jimmy Kay from Canada’s The Metal Voicespoke to early Iron Maiden guitarist Terry Wapram (Buffalo Fish). Wapram spoke about the one-off performance under the band banner of IDES OF MARCH to commemorate forty years since the release of Iron Maiden‘s debut album. The show will take place at the Beermageddon Festival on Sunday 30th August in Bromsgrove, England.
IDES OF MARCH is fronted by PAUL DI’ANNO, who will be performing for the very final time at BEERMAGEDDON. The band is completed by TERRY WAPRAM and TERRY RANCE on guitars, DOUG SAMPSON on drums and SPEED HARRIS (Dean Moraity of HI-ON MAIDEN) on bass.
Watch the interview below.
When asked about his time in Iron Maiden
“I think I went in the band about June / July in 1977 and came out of the band late February 1978, so I was in the band around 8 months. What first happened was Dennis Wilcox (Iron Maiden Singer at the time) came to the Marquee Club because was doing the photography for this band called ‘Bearded Lady’ and I was there with the band called ‘Hooker’ and I was seen there. I don’t really know the full story but there had been problems with Iron Maiden guitarist at the time Dave Murray and Bob Sawyer. Well there was some problem and they were going out of the band and Dennis approached me and I went down and played with Iron Maiden and got the job. They were moving away from the two guitar thing and wanted to try keyboards. When I joined Ron Rebel Mathews was on drums then something went wrong with Ron and they put out an ad for a drummer and keyboard player. Then Thunderstick came in on drums and Tony Moore on keyboards. ”
“I spent a lot of time rehearsing with them than playing live. I think I played around 5-6 gigs with them. After one gig Tony Moore left and when I didn’t really show any interest in being in a two guitar line up I left and they moved on without me.”
When asked if he made any small musical contributions/ inflections to the songs in the early days
“Phantom of the Opera springs to mind, I was very impressed when I was first shown that riff. I really thought it crossed the barrier into a whole other thing. It was like their version of Bohemian Rhapsody where there was so many pieces. I would be sitting down with Steve Harris and Tony Moore and we would be looking at the pieces, so there was a good involvement in that. I spent a massive amount of time sitting around at Steve Harris’ house tinkering around with songs with him.”
When asked about the ‘Ideas of March’ Final performance of Paul Di’anno
“We were approached by Steve Goldby to do something to commemorate the 45th anniversary (of the debut Iron Maiden album) and he wanted to get to as close as he could to one of the very early line-ups. In the ‘Ides of March’ we were all in at slightly different times. Terry Rance was in at one of the earliest lineups, Paul Di’anno was of course on the first two iconic albums.and Doug Sampson joined the band after me. The line up I was in had Thunderstick and also Ron ‘Rebel’ Mathews who played drums earlier on. ”
When asked about the set list on the final performance
“A really good chunk of the first album, some of the second album Killers plus some of the more obscure releases from around that time. We are looking at it in a way where we will be faithful to recorded versions, we may just tweak things a little to how it would have been in our own time. For instance some of the songs were played slower initially before it was recorded, it didn’t take away from it it kind of made it powerful and more steady. I’m not saying we are going to play everything slow but there will be some touches to do with how the individual people played the songs at the time. It’s kind of like a time machine. ”
When asked if the rest of the band without Dianno will continue on after Paul’s final performance
“I don’t know, everyone is very positive though. I got a very good feeling about this from the first production meeting we had. I am not sure but I have a really good feeling because Terry Rance and I work very well together. I think there could be a possibility I just don’t know. I think the rest of us would consider doing things as there are more offers coming in. I would give Steve Goldby his due on this.”
This will be vocalist PAUL DI’ANNO’s final ever live performance. After experiencing serious health difficulties in recent months, Paul has now taken the advice of his doctors and will retire from the live stage in 2020 after the IDES OF MARCH performance at BEERMAGEDDON. It is going to take one mighty effort for Paul to pull off this performance but he is determined to go out in style and give his fans one memorable final thank you and goodbye.
Paul said: “It’s been a tough four years waiting to play again. I hope to be standing for this show and I’m really looking forward to it. Standing up would be great – if not, Hell on wheels coming to ya!”
A forthcoming biographical documentary movie on Paul Dianno’s life is currently in the making and the producers will be filming the BEERMAGEDDON performance on 30th August. The movie is being created and directed by Wes Orshoski, the man responsible for ‘Lemmy’ – The Movie’ and more details about the film will be released during 2020.

Watch the interview Here:
When asked about the new Armored Saint Album
“We are doing a new record and we are just about done, I have maybe a couple of more songs to sing and the deadline is the end of February 2020. The pressure is on I don’t like that necessarily but we will finish. ”
When asked about the musical direction on the new album
“For me it’s always about pushing the (musical) boundaries, we are always going to be a hard rock, heavy metal band , that’s what we started as, and I love. But I always want to push the boundaries, challenge the fan base and take a chance. ”
When asked if he gets along with current Anthrax singer Joey Belladonna
“Me and Joey have always been fine with each other, it has always been a cordial circumstance. People think automatically that singers who were in the same band in different years should hate each other but that is not necessary how I feel and i don’t think Joey does either.”
Jimmy Kay from Canada’sThe Metal Voicespoke with Anvil’s singer / guitarist Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow. Lips spoke about the bands new album Legal At last and it’s lyrical content which was released Feb 14 2020 vis AFM, how their movie, The Story of Anvil has become a Global inspiration of hope for the sick and the music business.
Watch the interview here:
When asked about their marijuana lyrical content and if it will polarize their fans base
“The legalization of marijuana has little or nothing to do with whether it’s something’s good for you or bad for you. It was made illegal originally because of finances and particularly finances of industries in the 1920’s and there was no such thing as hippies and smoking pot in the 1920s so it had nothing to do with that. It had everything to do with the economy, with particularly the cotton industry, pulp and paper, the oil industry and plastic and fabrics all kinds of stuff like. So it’s not about going to get high and this song doesn’t even talk about that so get rid of that misconception it’s not about getting high. (Album Cover shows) Angels getting high (on the front cover) but on the back cover the devil is getting high, so the basic and fundamental idea is, it’s for better or worse. It’s another human vice like I say in the lyrics. It’s about taking responsibility on an individual basis. If you want to go get high that’s your own business, if you don’t that’s also your own business. I’m not telling anybody what to do all I’m saying it’s all for better or worse and I’m talking about it like you say as a news report. I’m talking about the implications and the overall effect that it’s had on our our world.”
When asked about how the new album has more social political messages compared to older albums
“No one really cares, it’s human nature to be selfish and I see the stuff going on and around me I’m just I’m bringing awareness by singing about it and talking about it. People will condemn me for being another Greta Thunberg with all these new songs but everything was written long before she got up and did that speech.”
When asked about the musical direction of the new album
” I think we’re very consistent at what we do and in particularly on the last few albums. We’re trying to be as authentic to ourselves as we possibly can be We have our own direction and our own thing.”
How the Anvil documentary has become an inspirational movie
“Christmas Season is a time when there’s a huge amount of people that end up watching the movie especially from people who are ill. It’s Inspiring you know, to people who become ill. We have a large amount of people who watch the documentary who are hospital patients with cancer or other kinds of debilitating problems. People come to our shows on a regular basis as a result of that movie because the movie is inspiring. The movie is about going after your dreams and capturing them at any cost and a hope for tomorrow, that’s what it’s about. It’s about the human endurance. It’s hugely inspirational for people to get up and take part in their own destinies and give them hope and I’m glad I’m proud that.”
