THE WINERY DOGS: To Release “Hot Streak” On October 2nd

The Hot Streak will continue this fall for THE WINERY DOGS – featuring Richie Kotzen– lead vocals/guitar,  Mike Portnoy -drums, Billy Sheehan -bass. Their second appropriately titled, self-produced studio album, “Hot Streak”, is set for release October 2nd on earMUSIC in collaboration with Loud & Proud Records.

“I feel we’ve taken the band to another level,” explains Richie Kotzen. “The compositions are stronger on this album. I feel more connected lyrically and musically to what I did on this record than on the last one. We’ve widened the musical scope of the band on this record and moved it forward.”

Mike Portnoy continues, “Everything on this album was more of a collaboration than on the first album. There’s just a natural chemistry. The three of us really mesh very, very well, both musically and personally. The mission of this band is to write catchy songs, and not have the musicianship overpower that.”

“I’m glad we’re not playing it safe and just doing songs that automatically fit in the category of what we did on the first record,” Billy Sheehan concludes. “Some of them are a little different, and we definitely took chances. And you have to do that — otherwise, you don’t grow.”

The trio first exploded onto the Rock scene with their self-titled, self-produced and critically acclaimed debut album that was released July 23, 2013 and a sold-out worldwide tour. THE WINERY DOGS debuted on Billboard’s “Top Alternative Albums” chart at #3, “Top Independent Albums” chart at #4, “Top Rock Albums” chart at #5, “Top Internet Albums” at #8 and “Top 200 Albums” chart at #27.

THE WINERY DOGS – (Richie Kotzen-lead vocals/guitar, Mike Portnoy-drums, Billy Sheehan-bass) – has entered a Los Angeles recording studio to start work on the follow-up to their debut album, which will be self-produced and released this fall on earMUSIC in collaboration with Loud & Proud Records. Details will be announced in the coming months, although fans are already getting news about the band’s fall U.S. tour, which is set to kick off October 3 in Ridgefield, CT at the Ridgefield Playhouse.

“I am thrilled to be back in the studio with Mike and Billy recording the second Winery Dogs record,” proclaims Richie Kotzen.  “I mentioned in an interview months ago that I thought based on how we’ve grown as a band, that this record could expand creatively beyond what we did on record one.  After only two weeks of recording, I am convinced this sentiment is true.  I can’t wait to see where this all goes and share it with our listeners.”

On May 23, 2014, The Winery Dogs released their self-titled, self-produced and critically acclaimed debut album in Europe on earMUSIC as two very special editions. The Winery Dogs Special Edition is comprised of two-CDs. Disc 1 is entitled “Unleashed In Japan 2013”, comprised of 10 songs recorded live in Japan during their July ’13 tour, including “Criminal,” a track previously unavailable, along with a 16-page booklet of live photos and lyrics.  Disc 2 is the standard album which was made available in Europe for the first time as part of the Special Edition. “Dog Treats: The Winery Dogs Deluxe Special Edition”, a limited edition release, is being sold in a box resembling a box of dog treats, and includes the Special Edition collection of music, a DVD featuring four music videos and interview footage, demos from the original recording sessions, a “studio diary” written by Mike Portnoy, as well as some unique merchandise unavailable elsewhere.

THE WINERY DOGS: Release New Album “Unleashed In Japan” On May 23rd

“Unleashed In Japan” (on earMUSIC) isn’t just a simple re-release – it is way more than that! Firstly, “Unleashed In Japan” presents a new live album from THE WINERY DOGS, and the eponymous studio album comes as a bonus so to say. Secondly, the aforementioned live album is also available as a vinyl version. And last but not least there is also a box set named “Dog Treats” containing various rarities from The Winery Dogs on top of the live and the studio album.

It would almost be too easy to call The Winery Dogs just a “supergroup”: Singer and guitarist Richie Kotzen made history with Poison and Mr. Big, bassist Billy Sheehan played together with Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, Talas, UFO and many others and drummer Mike Portnoy is among other things co-founder of the prog metal icons Dream Theater. But The Winery Dogs are so much more than just a supergroup.

“We all have our own intonation and our own style but we also have a lot in common when it comes to our musical roots and the music we grew up with,” singer and guitarist Richie Kotzen explains. “What makes this band so special is that we have all preserved our own identity during our collaboration. We all sound the way we are but still make music which sounds as fresh and exciting as if we were a new band. The chemistry is just right, we were virtually meant for each other.”

“I like the fact that we all have our different backgrounds, even though some of it is akin,” Sheehan adds. “We have a special connection which surely wouldn’t have come about if we all liked the same things. We put different elements together and made a consistent band out of them.”

THE WINERY DOGS bassist Billy Sheehan is featured in a new interview with Radio Metal. An excerpt is available below:

Q: Just like MR. BIG, everyone in this band is able to sing. It looks like it’s very important for you…

Sheehan: “Yeah, I always urge players to sing. If you’re standing up there, put a microphone in front of you and sing! You have a voice, so why not use it? It’s always a very important thing. When I first started to sing, I was in a band and I never sang before. They needed an extra harmony part, so they put a microphone in front of me and said: ‘You sing this!’ And I said (hesitant) ‘… OK’ and I just started to sing it. (Laughs) I think that it’s a great thing for musicians to know about singing, because singing is the instrument that everyone has. Everyone has a voice, for the most part. And everyone likes to sing along. Knowing that, I think it gives your music a much greater appeal.”

“I’m not striving for music to have appeal in order to sell, I just find it’s a lot more fun to have three hundred friends in a room than fifty. When you have a full room of people singing along, it’s an amazing thing. Last time, our show in Paris was unreal, incredible, people sang along to everything so loud, they blew us off the stage! (Laughs) It was amazing! So I encourage the musicians to sing! Why not? You’re standing up there, you have a voice, let’s use it! Especially in a three piece band, everybody has to do more: I sing, I play bass, I play bass pedals. Mike’s using every limb: both feet, both hands and his voice, all the time. Richie: guitar, piano, singing the leads and everything. So there’s no wasted people, everybody does a lot. That’s the wonderful thing about three piece bands, everybody has to do a lot to fill up for any extra keyboard, or rhythm guitars, or horns section, or backup singer, etc. We have to do it all ourselves and I kind of like that.”

Q: Was it important since the beginning of the band to work as a trio or did you think about hiring other musicians?

Sheehan: “No, we like to be a trio. Power trio is one of my favorite things. I grew up playing in a power trio band called TALAS. Some of my favorite bands of all times,CREAM, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, ZZ TOP, were trios. Even bands that weren’t trios were a trio with a lead singer: LED ZEPPELIN or THE WHO for example. So, the three piece thing for me has always been appealing.”
