Recently Radioactive Metal conducted an interview with KAMELOT guitarist/founder Thomas Youngblood. Comments Radioactive Metal:
When thinking about Heavy Metal in Florida during the early 90s, nobody would blame you if Death Metal immediately came to mind. The Sunshine State wasn’t all growls and blast beats though. A young Thomas Youngblood was lying the groundwork for a career in Power Metal, a career that would play second Flying V to no one. With KAMELOT having just released their eleventh masterpiece, Haven, we caught up with Mr. Youngblood. We discuss the state of the game, why he’s not a corpsegrinder, and what exactly is up with the “K”. It might confuse King Artie but it makes sense to us. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss the whole VIP thing, Coreen’s encounter with producer Jason Suecof, and we drop the ball on the SEX PISTOLS. Musically, we crank the Haven record, new tunes from SKINLESS, VILLAINS, COAL CHAMBER, and introduce Florida deathsters MINDSCAR in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!!
On October 7, DaBelly conducted an interview with guitarist Thomas Youngblood of American/German/Swedish symphonic metallers KAMELOT. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
DaBelly: Whether intended or not, [new singer Tommy] Karevik‘s voice is reminiscent to [former KAMELOT singer] Roy Khan‘s and I’m eager to hear Karevik‘s interpretation of your older works.
Youngblood: One of the reasons we hired Tommy is because his voice had a similar quality and when it came to writing the new record we wanted to keep the KAMELOT sound. But also we want to grow. We want to show that Tommy is his own vocalist with his own thing going on. We know the fans will see that.
DaBelly: Did you write [the new KAMELOT album] “Silverthorn” with Karevik or was most of the record in place before he arrived?
Youngblood: Most of “Silverthorn” was written by myself and Oliver [Palotai], our keyboard player. We presented the songs to Tommy to work on vocal melodies and lyrics. So yeah, Tommy wrote all the vocal melodies and lyrics. I think Sascha [Paeth], our producer, helped a little bit, but for the most part Tommy is already been assimilated into KAMELOT. To me, it’s a really good sign for the future. I know that we will be able to invest a lot more time into writing the next album.
DaBelly: This was the first time you’ve entered the studio with a new singer in a long time. What was the preparation like? Did you approach writing music any differently?
Youngblood: My goal from day one was to make a KAMELOT record, so we didn’t do anything differently. We wrote the songs in the same keys. The only real difference was that some else was writing the melodies and lyrics and Tommy did an amazing job. He worked a little with Sascha on it. I wasn’t in the studio when they recorded vocals. Once Oliver and I started working together on this album, I knew that the music was going to be KAMELOT. The next step was to make sure the vocals fit in with what we’ve done in the past but also that they offered hints of what is yet to come.
DaBelly: I felt your last album, “Poetry For The Poisoned”, was heavier, especially in the lyrics. It was certainly heavier than “Karma”, my favorite. The new record seems heavier as well. The music has the old “Karma” feel, but the vocals seemed more like “Poetry”. Do you think that is a fair description on the new record?
Youngblood: I think one of the things I missed in “Poetry” was the melody, like you said. You know, like with “Karma” and “Black Halo”, the chorus had a melodic sense to it that we didn’t have on “Poetry”; it was something that I was missing and it was one of the first things that I talked to Tommy about — bringing more of a melodic sense to the song. He’s really great at writing melodies. Almost every chorus on the new record has a significant melodic feel to it. But at the same time I don’t want to abandon the melancholy undertones that I personally like in our music. I think it’s an important component that helps make us unique — blending uplifting choruses with a verse or mid-part sections that are darker and make you feel a little sad. But at the end of the record I want people to feel good about life, I don’t want to leave them feeling like they want to cut their wrists! That’s one of the things that I thought we missed on “Poetry” and it’s certainly one of the things that I think people liked about albums like “Black Halo”. Even though it had some darker elements, it also had this uplifting release as well.
KAMELOT guitarist Thomas Youngblood is featured in a new interview with The Great Southern Brainfart discussing the band’s forthcoming album, Silverthorn, and new singer Tommy Karevik. An excerpt is available below:
Q: As opposed to sounding like a lot of the more modern symphonic metal bands, KAMELOT seems to have this old school vibe that really connected with me.
Youngblood: “At first, we really didn’t know what we were doing. The first few records were basically just us trying to find our identity. When we got to the album Karma, we really found our niche and our own sound. We were blending those classical influences with some new age influences and making the record really melodic yet also dark and melancholy. Those were the key identifiers with the band from that point on and with each record we just wanted to grow and try different things. We have the luxury of having open minded fans who are open to change and that’s important especially with the changes that have happened recently.”
Q: The change you’re talking about is the changing of lead vocalists from Roy Khan to Tommy Karevik. That’s a huge change for any band to undergo. Has the addition of Tommy to the band opened doors to some new fans that may have been somewhat on the fence before?
Youngblood: “When a band has to change a singer, it’s hard. It is becoming more common now and I think people accept it more than they would have say 15 years ago. From the day we knew we had to make this change, we looked at it as an opportunity to not only continue at the same level but to grow as a band. Bringing in a guy like Tommy is not only going keep a good percentage of the older fans but he’s going to be part of building a new fan base for Kamelot for the future. We didn’t want to just rest on our laurels. We wanted to keep the door open and grow.”

Kamelot France recently conducted an interview with KAMELOT guitarist Thomas Youngblood. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
Kamelot France: Fans’ reaction to “Sacrimony”, the new song you played [on the recent European tur], was also great! Was this choice kind of obvious or were there other “big candidates?”
Youngblood: We have a lot of strong songs on the album, but this one was the first one that we wanted to play. Ironically, it was one the last song we wrote the music for. I remember sitting with [KAMELOT keyboardist] Oliver [Palotai] in Stuttgart and I had to leave the next day for Florida. I said, “Let’s make one more song, something fast and uptempo.” That was the genesis for “Sacrimony”. Later, [new KAMELOT singer] Tommy [Karevik] laid down a killer vocal melody and it was pretty much like on the demo. Later, we invited Elize Ryd [AMARANTHE singer and KAMELOT touring backing vocalist] to sing on that song.
Kamelot France: [Longtime KAMELOT producer] Sascha Paeth told us that [the new KAMELOT album] “Silverthorn” [is] probably the best KAMELOT album so far, in his opinion. Do you agree with that and what can you say about the production work?
Youngblood: I cannot say this, but it’s definitely top 3, maybe the best ever. I don’t want to say the typical band response that it’s our best ever. Sascha, of course, has been with us for 10 years and hearing him say this is awesome.
Kamelot France: KAMELOT fans’ reaction to the announcement of Tommy Karevik as the new singer has been unanimously good. Did you expect so much support?
Youngblood: After hearing the test version of “Song For Jolee” [the first new song written with Tommy], we kinda got a feeling most of fans would support the eventual decision to go with Tommy Karevik. He is engaging on stage, amazing with melodies and his range is phenomenal. I can’t wait for the fans to meet him on the upcoming tours. He also respects the past of KAMELOT and gives the older songs the justice they deserve.
Kamelot France: Last January, you revealed that six or seven songs were already co-written with Oliver. When, and how, did Tommy step into the process?
Youngblood: Around February, we started sending him ideas for songs. “Song For Jolee” was the first one, then “Solitaire”, and so on. He worked closely with Sascha in Wolfsburg on the vocals and lyrics.
Kamelot France: How much has he been involved in lyrics?
Youngblood: For the most part, he did all the lyrics, along with Sascha. I did some lyrics and we all worked together on the concept and storyline.
Kamelot France: Did you change ur way of working for this album — for yourself, and with the rest of the team?
Youngblood: Not at all. We approached the songs the same as always. This was important to maintain the KAMELOT sound, at least on the music side. We chose a singer that fits into the KAMELOT picture instead of picking someone that would require changing tunings, etc. Of course, Tommy adds his unique style to the base of this equation, making a perfect transition to the next generation of KAMELOT.
Kamelot France: Can you reveal a few things about the upcoming “Sacrimony” video? We already know that it’s gonna feature Alissa White-Gluz [THE AGONIST]… Any other guests? Is it gonna be same production team than the other videos?
Youngblood: We returned to Serbia and working with the crazy and amazing director Ivan Colic. I had been discussing ideas with Stacca, the studio producer, about ideas and making a video that will be killer. They also did [previous KAMELOT videos] “Ghost Opera”, “Rule The World”, “Love You To Death” and “Human Stain”. Alissa is featured in the video as well as Elize Ryd.
Kamelot France: Can you tell us a bit more about the original concept and story of the album?
Youngblood: The limited box set has a book that outlines the story, its based in the 19th Century and deals with an affluent family that deals with tragic events that leads to coverups, secrets and betrayal. The fans need to dig into the story once they have the album.
Kamelot France: The album artwork for “Silverthorn” looks amazing. Where did the style and elements come from and are they related to the story?
Youngblood: The cover is Jolee, the main character in the story. This is her as an adult, she is the angel of afterlife. Heile did an amazing job on the cover and the booklet is full of great images.
KAMELOT guitarist Thomas Youngblood is featured in a Q&A on the band’s official Facebook page. An excerpt is available below:
Q: The new album’s been announced to recall albums like Karma or The Black Halo. Can we talk about a return to Kamelot roots or will you keep something of the dark atmosphere of Poetry For the Poisoned?
Thomas: “The dark mood will be there but I feel we missed some melodic aspects in the music over the last few releases. The theme of the album is quite dark and the storyline is a bit dark, so to speak. The music came out really beautiful, lush, melodic and really special. Working with Oliver, Sascha and our new vocalist proved to be an amazing experience.”
Q: Have you heard anymore from (ex-vocalist) Roy Khan?
Thomas: “Before making the final choice on the new singer, we did correspond via email. I know he’s in good health, working in Norway. When he quit Kamelot he also chose to quit the music business and seems to be very happy. A page is turned, it’s a new era for Kamelot! It’s very exciting and I can already tell you it’s gonna be great.”
Q: Looking forward to introducing the new singer to your fans?
Thomas. “First I have to say the fans will love the new singer, we love what we hear and that was the biggest test. Of course there will be fans that hold onto the past and I understand that, but things change and you can either move forward or live in the past. I was humbled by the amount of singers that applied for the spot, some totally unknown and others are names that every metal fan would know. In the end we chose the guy that fits Kamelot in terms of sound, writing and image.”
The title of Kamelot’s forthcoming release will be announced at the end of June, together with the name of their new vocalist. However, according to guitarist and composer Thomas Youngblood , one thing is certain: “Our fans can really look forward to our new record, because it represents Kamelot in every way!”
Youngblood on the style and content of the concept album: “The new songs sound more symphonic and melodic than our last two studio recordings. The material brings to mind albums such as Karma (2001) and The Black Halo (2005). In addition, this will be the best production that Kamelot have ever delivered. Because while other acts tend to opt for low-budget productions due to the difficult market situation, we have gone the opposite way: the new album will be a real statement, in terms of our compositions as well as in terms of our sound.”
The eagerly awaited album has been scheduled for release on September 24th (Germany: September 21st; North America: September 25th), and Kamelot are set to play a number of festivals (among them Wacken Open Air and Bang Your Head) as early as July and August before embarking on a US tour alongside NIGHTWISH in September/October and a major headliner tour of Europe in November 2012. The band will headline four very special shows in the US in September and October, as well as a co-headlining show with SYMPHONY X in Mexico City on September 8th
