NIGHTWISH keyboardist/founder Tuomas Holopainen recently appeared on the Nelosen Uutiset program in his native Finland and offered a few details regarding who will take over as the band’s vocalist. Floor Jansen (REVAMP / ex-AFTER FOREVER) currently holds the position for touring purposes following Anette Olzon’s mid-tour departure at the end of September.
Nightwish’s movie Imaginaerum saw its premiere at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland on November 10th. The film will see general release in theatres in Finland on November 23rd. Video from the event can be viewed below:
Nightwish mainman Tuomas Holopainen recently went to the Disney California Adventure Park in California with Noisecreep when the band played Anaheim. In the video below, he talks about why he loves Disneyland, how it impacts his own art; what he would say to Walt Disney, if he could; a Scrooge McDuck-related project he’s working on; and more! Nightwish mainman Tuomas Holopainen was interviewed by Westword, to preview the band’s show tomorrow night at the Ogden Theatre in Denver, Colorado. In the interview, he discusses his thoughts on being a “rock star,” personal artistic goals, performing the material from Imaginaerum live, and more.
Says Holopainen, “I could not be further away from being a rock star…I am a songwriter, a storyteller, a composer. Any of those terms would work. I am proud to be called any of those things, but a rock star…. NO WAY!”
Regarding his artistic goals, he says, “With each album we do, we challenge ourselves and challenge the listeners with something different. You never want to do the same album or even the same song twice, so that is our goal. Every album has been on a different level from the previous one, and we have always been able to challenge ourselves.”
Adapting Imaginaerum songs to the stage without the benefit of an orchestra and choir is tough, says Holopainen; they’re forced to rely on backing tracks: “There is no way we can have any extra players on the stage. We won’t have any room. So, that is the only way we can do it.” Read the whole thing!
NIGHTWISH songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen recently spoke to Artisan News about the band’s North American tour; how their latest album, “Imaginaerum”, has been received; and the forthcoming premiere of the “Imaginaerum” movie. You can now watch the report below.
“We got some criticism for ‘Imaginaerum’, saying that this is no more metal, it’s just soundtrack, there’s too much orchestra, all that,” Tuomas revealed. “There is a lot of that; that’s what we wanted to do with this album, ’cause it’s a soundtrack for a movie. Maybe next album will be total black metal without any orchestras or keyboards or totally acoustic. Who knows?! The main thing is that you always need to do what feels right.”
NIGHTWISH‘s long-awaited “Imaginaerum” film — based on the band’s album of the same name — will be released theatrically in Finland on November 23.
The movie will have its premiere on November 10 at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, where the audience will be treated to both a full-scale NIGHTWISH concert and the first-ever public screening of the movie.
Eagerly anticipated around the world, “Imaginaerum” creates a musical fantasy world in the vein of David Lynch, Neil Gaiman, and Cirque du Soleil. The movie is an innovative mixture of story-telling and music, an extraordinary tale of the power of imagination… and what’s ultimately important in life.
Shot and post-produced in Canada, the movie was directed by Stobe Harju and produced by Solar Films, and features appearances by all NIGHTWISH members. The screenplay is based on a wild vision that Tuomas Holopainen, the mastermind of the band, devised after the album “Dark Passion Play” came out in 2007.
The official soundtrack of the movie, “Imaginaerum By Nightwish: The Score”, will be released on the day before the premiere — Friday, November 9. The album features 13 grandiose, unreleased re-interpretations of “Imaginaerum” tracks by Petri Alanko.
The “Imaginaerum” album was released in the U.S. on January 10 via Roadrunner Records.

NIGHTWISH‘s new single, “Storytime”, recently topped the official chart in Finland.
“Storytime” was released as a single on Friday, November 11 via Nuclear Blast Records. The song comes off NIGHTWISH‘s new album, “Imaginaerum”, which is due in North America on January 10, 2012 via Roadrunner Records. The CD is the band’s first since 2007’s “Dark Passion Play”, which was then-new singer Anette Olzon‘s debut.
The band examined its catalog when sitting down to write what would become “Imaginaerum”. The songs for the album were written between 2008 and 2010, after the “Dark Passion Play” tour cycle ended.
“Imaginaerum” release dates:
Finland: November 30
Europe: December 2
Australia: January 6
North America: January 10
Japan: January 11
New Zealand: January 16
NIGHTWISH will kick off the “Imaginaerum” world tour in Los Angeles. The very first show of the trek will take place at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California on Saturday, January 21. This will be the biggest NIGHTWISH show production ever on North American soil and strictly a one-off — there will be no U.S. tour until later in 2012.
