Indigo DarkPsych is fronted by Marvic ‘Indigo’ Lewis. Originally known as Indigo, in November 2003 Marvic released her first single ‘Washed Away’ on radio, and in July 2004 released ‘Struck’. They both turned out to be hits, and in fact she was nominated as a best solo artist in the Bay Music Awards 2004. This inspired her as Indigo to continue writing and developing that same style, until she concluded a whole album under the name of ‘STRUCK’. That album being an awesome slab of Alternative Hard Rock with subtle touches of Electronica, and stacks of melody. Her second release ‘These Are The Roots’ is a heavier, more metallic sound, but maintaining the melodic sensibility that was so apparent in her debut release. Marvic co-wrote and co produced the 2nd album and was responsible for the album artwork.
1. Hello, Marvic Lewis or rather Indigo DarkPsych 🙂 I’m Kostya, Welcome to MSF!
Hi Kostya! You can call me Indigo, its my stage name/nick name!! 😉
2. Let’s start with the origins. How did you start your musician career?
I started my music career as both me and my only sister liked singing and eventually started taking singing lessons at around the age of 8.
3. Which band most influenced on your music style?
I’ve had various bands&artists grabbing my attention through the years but they where never of direct influence on my own creations, though with time I started defining the style/s that I like best & therefore which I want to achieve in a personal and original way. I like Static X, Korn, Guano Apes, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Rammstein, Meshuggah and many more along these lines.
4. Why did you choose the artist name Indigo Dark Psych? 🙂 Does it mean something personal to you?
Indigo is the most mystic color in the rainbow, I like its sound and its hue. Purple colors give me an intense feeling of passion&thats the way in which I write my music. Darkpsych was an extension to my stage name that I have publicized through my second Album released in 2010. This surname came about for many reasons though its literal meaning is for the music style&content, which is D’ark’, therefore heavy and ‘Psych’ standing for psychological&psychedelic refers to the rushing&tripping element of the music.
5. Your first album “Struck” came out in 2006 and it was amazing!!! Tell us about the albums creation process.
The songwriting for the Album ‘Struck’ started back in 2002 after my previous Rock Band had finished. The 1st song was produced towards the end of that same year and released as a single in 2003 by the name of ‘Washed Away’, it was a great hit and slowly but surely I kept working on the rest. It was a long process for I had to work with various session musicians, no fixed band at the time. It was filled with great and amazing experiences that resulted in 10 strong&energetic tracks.
6. Now in 2012, if you are looking back, are you still satisfied with the results that “Struck” reached? Would you change something in it if you’ve got a chance?
Struck remained a striking album till today I believe though if I had to go back I would have changed the way in which I promoted it and maybe some minor musical arrangements here and there.
7. Your second album “These Are The Roots” was released in 2010. How did the fans received it?
It was received quite well by the general local Rock/Metal scene and even appreciated by the rest of the crowd that came across it. I am happy with the feedback that the presentation of this Album and its singles brought about even abroad our tiny home island, Malta.
8. Do you think it’s better than “Struck” or are they both equal for you?
In some ways Struck is better than ‘These Are The Roots’ and in some others vice-versa. The sure thing is that the 1st Album was more commercial and ear catching than the second one but my music is an evolving thing and its all the way experimenting with and testing various elements and fusions that will finally bring along the best product of them 3….the 3rd Album.
9. Now in these days you are about to release a new EP. Could you tell our readers more about it? How does it look/sound?
The Ep is an online release of 3 of the best singles of ‘Struck’ by the names of ‘Washed Away’, ‘I Don’t Care’, and ‘Thanks’. Back in those days neither EP releases nor online stores where so popular in our country and I’ve decided to make this EP available since I have realized that it kept a strong appeal through time and that it will surely be in demand just like the other releases.
10. It sounds like you are really satisfied with the results 🙂
I can’t say I ain’t though so much work still needs to be done and more success achieved.
11. How could you describe the metal scenes in Malta?
The Metal scene in Malta is way tinier then the island itself though considering everything it ain’t nothing bad and lately I have noticed that its growing and also exporting. In spite of its limitations it keeps moving on and in a forward direction.
12. Thanks for the interview!!!! Any last words that you like pass to our readers and your fans?
