Interview by Kostya Aronberg
Sovetsk-based old school heavy/thrash metal band DEFORMITY was formed in 1994 from the fragments of the Soviet Union, taking their inspiration from Metallica, Slayer, Testament, Pantera. Deformity’s lyrics are telling about social problems, the future of the planet, war, love, death and more. In spite of various information about this band, at least one thing is a pure fact: these guys never change their style! Recently Metalshock Finland‘s Kostya Aronberg had a chat with Alexander Garshin (rhythm-guitar – vocal), check it out below:
1. Hello Alexander and welcome to Metal Shock Finland!
Hello, Kostya! Nice to meet you .Thank you for the invitation! I am fine and very busy ,because now a lot of work and I have to appreciate every moment. Now Deformity is working on a new album and music videos.
2. DefromitY was formed in 1994 from the fragments of the Soviet Union, and since then it has became one of the most popular bands in Kaliningrad region. Can you tell us more about the early days?
The band was found in 1994. During these years the hard style of music was very popular. At the moment of formation of the band, the guys played in the style of melodic death. Everyone was young and full of strength and energy and it helped to write heavy style and dynamic songs. In 2000 not only the membership of the band was changed but also its creative leader. If before 2000 the founder of the band – Nikulin Vladimir (lead) – did the creative work, after 2000 till this day Garshin Alexander (rhythm-guitar – vocal) is responsible for it.
3. The band plays Trash/Heavy metal. Why did you choose these 2 styles and decide to combine them together?
We wanted to create fast, technical, aggressive and at the same time not heavy music and as a result we came to this style of music.
4. Which bands have influenced you the most?
Certainly the bands, which showed to the world this musical tendency, influenced on our band and our creative work. These bands are Metallica, Testament, Pantera, Slayer, Exodus, Kreator, etc
.
5. What is the main idea behind your song lyrics and what message you wanna send to your fans?
There is a different subject matter in our lyrics (life, love, mysticism, ecology, etc.). With the help of our songs we try to remind people that it’s enough just to look around to find the answers to one or another question. We try to remind people that everything that happens on Earth is a merit of each person of our planet.
6. The band’s new album “When tomorrow comes” was released last month. What can you tell us about its writing process?
The recording of an album was in the studio LIVE RECORDS (in Kaliningrad). Evgeniy Skillov, the studio’s owner and sound director, controlled the whole sound-recording process. All the instruments (drums, guitar and more) were recorded in live sound. The album had been recording for 2 months.
7. Tell us more about recording sessions…
Recording the album «When tomorrow comes» was held in a burst of inspiration, but laborious and at the same time interesting work had preceded it. As soon as the new material appeared, the band presented it to the public at the concerts. After various assessments of fans the band recorded a demo version of future songs. Then, with the help of the Internet and live performances, the band began to watch the public reaction to different songs. After experimentation with arrangements, sound and presentation of material the band recorded the final version of the album. The use of live instruments and the absence of some trendy digital things during the recording was an indispensable condition. It doesn’t mean that the band rejects innovation. We just want to make a release in the style of … Old-School. What has come out of it is to judge to our dear fans.
8. What do you expect from your fans, now that the album is out?
With the help of the release of new album we hope to increase the number of our fans and also to become famous in so many countries as possible.
9. Thanks so much for the interview! Any last words you wanna say to our readers and to your fans?
We want to remind our fans that we are in charge of what we do. Appreciate what you’re given just once – your LIFE. TRASH TILL DEATH
