According to Loudwire.com, ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian missed the band’s recent Kansas City show due to an unspecified illness. The band has since released a statement explaining that Ian is battling a severe viral infection, forcing him to be hospitalized in Los Angeles. As a result, Ian missed the band’s Indianapolis gig. He is expected to return to the line-up tonight (January 28th) in Fort Wayne.
In addition, the band also announced that drummer Charlie Benante has left the tour to be at the bedside of his terminally ill mother in New York.
Rather than cancel any shows, Anthrax asked their TESTAMENT and DEATH ANGEL tourmates to fill in the blanks. Guitarist Rob Caggiano commented:
“We didn’t want to cancel any of the concerts, we didn’t want to let anyone down, so we decided to figure out a way to keep the show on the road. We’re so grateful to the guys in Testament and Death Angel for stepping up.”
Death Angel checked in with the following update:
“Thank you Kansas City, MO for a great a show of support to Anthrax. In case some of you didn’t know, Anthrax’s Scott Ian wasn’t able to make the show. Anthrax decided to move forth with the show and asked Rob and Ted to step in and play a few songs. Rob got to jam ‘In The End’ and Ted jammed out ‘Medusa’ and ‘Got The Time’. They had a blast jamming these sick ass tunes with them (considering they only had less than a day to learn the songs. Plus no rehearsal with the band). The metal community is all about unity. KILL AS ONE!!!”
They followed it the next day with an update and a photo from Indianapolis:
“Rob and Ted with Anthrax (featuring Gene Hoglan). They were asked again to come up and jam some more songs. Rob got to jam ‘The Devil You Know’, ‘In The End’ and ‘Madhouse’. Ted jammed on ‘Got The Time’, ‘Medusa’ and ‘Indians’. Fun times. Thank you Anthrax!”
Remaining dates on the tour are as follows:
January
28 – Piere’s Entertainment Center – Fort Wayne, IN
29 – Expo Five – Louisville, KY
30 – The Orange Peel – Asheville, NC
February
2 – Tabernacle – Atlanta, GA
3 – Promowest Pavilion – Columbus, OH

Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times spoke to VAN HALENsingerDavid Lee Roth and producer John Shanks about the making of the the band’s new album, “A Different Kind Of Truth”, which will arrive on February 7 via Interscope.
On going back and excavating pieces of unrecorded songs, lyrics from old notebooks and half-pursued concepts to build the new VAN HALEN album:
Roth: “It’s material that Eddie [Van Halen, guitar] and I generated, literally, in 1975, 1976 and 1977. Usually fellas in our weight division will kind of gamely — or ironically, wink, wink — try to hail back to it [but] keep a safe, mature distance from it.”
On sifting through archival material with Eddie Van Halen, looking for the nuggets that could be mined for the new VAN HALEN album:
Shanks: “Some of it was recorded in Dave‘s basement when these guys were kids, and, sitting there next to Eddie, it was pretty cool just to go through that journey. And then when the sessions started just seeing how Eddie and Alex play together — there’s such a synchronicity in their feel and rhythm and their playing. There were times, honestly, I was just moved by it, not just as a musician but as a human being. The nuances of the way they communicate is staggering.”
On the state of Eddie Van Halen, a rehab veteran who has also lost a third of his tongue to cancer and undergone hip replacement:
Roth: “He’s doing really well. He’s lucid, he’s sober, he’s playing. You know, I don’t know if Ed has ever felt good. There’s a thin line between rage and great work. He really never enjoyed his fame or success, and that might be part of what compels him.”
On the magical legacy of VAN HALEN and the urgent need to live up to it with the new album and tour:
Roth: “Are there second chances? I don’t know, Mr. Faulkner, I’m tending to agree with you: No. We’ve managed to stretch our adolescence like a Chiclet to the moon and maintained the respectful dignities along the way that got us on that turnpike up in the first place. We love what we do for a living. Even in our wildest, most beer-soaked days we never missed rehearsal.”

The documentary on MOTÖRHEAD singer and bassist Lemmy Kilmister, “Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch”, has been nominated for a Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Award in the “Best Sound Editing In A Documentary Feature Film” category.
Greg Olliver, the film’s co-director and also editor/sound editor, is flattered by the nomination, especially since “Lemmy” has been nominated alongside films that were directed by Martin Scorsese (“George Harrison: Living In The Material World”) and Werner Herzog (“Cave Of Forgotten Dreams”).
Said Olliver: “According to my doctor, I actually lost some middle-range hearing while working on ‘Lemmy’, and even though the MOTÖRHEAD shows we shot played a big part of my hearing loss, the editing and listening to MOTÖRHEAD over and over and over again for months definitely added to the problem. At least the constant ringing in my ears will now constantly remind me of the award we’ve been nominated for!”
“Lemmy” closed out 2011 in style, with gold sales certifications around the world, and a best-film award.
Directed by Olliver and Wes Orshoski, “Lemmy” has now been certified gold (50,000 DVDs, Blu-rays, digital downloads shipped or sold) by the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA).
Called “the stuff of legends” by the Los Angeles Times and “inspiring” by NME, “Lemmy” was also recently certified gold in the U.K. by the British Phonographic Industry, and has also reached the milestone in Germany, France and Scandinavia.
“Lemmy” also took home the “Film Of The Year” trophy at the annual Classic Rock Awards in London in November, beating out titles by THE ROLLING STONES, AC/DC, FOO FIGHTERS, BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE and “The Big 4” (METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX). In its review of “Lemmy”, Classic Rock called the film “a heart-warming, life-affirming thing of beauty.”
Filmed over more than three years, “Lemmy” features appearances by artists spanning the musical spectrum, from METALLICA, Ozzy Osbourne and Slash to Henry Rollins, Peter Hook (NEW ORDER, JOY DIVISION), Mick Jones (THE CLASH) and Jarvis Cocker.
The U.S. version of “Lemmy”, a two-DVD set issued by Damage Case Films/Megaforce, is the definitive version of the documentary. The Blu-ray features more than four hours of bonus content, including featurettes, live performances from MOTÖRHEAD and Lemmy with METALLICA, extended scenes and interview outtakes. The DVD features more than three hours of extras. Both include a glossy booklet with exclusive photos and drawings only available in the U.S.
“Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch” sold around 3,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 1 on Billboard‘s “Top Music Videos” chart. In addition, both the DVD and Blu-ray disc were among the top 10 best-selling documentaries on Amazon.com the week of its release.
