According to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, MANOWAR has set “The Lord Of Steel” as the title of its long-awaited eleventh studio album. The CD, which will celebrate its world premiere and digital pre-release in June, was mixed and mastered at Wisseloord Studios in the Netherlands with the help of longtime collaborators, mixing engineer Ronald Prent and Grammy Award-winning mastering engineer Darcy Proper.
“The Lord Of Steel” will include the track “El Gringo”, which will also serve as the theme song for the After Dark Action franchise film “El Gringo”, an action western starring Scott Adkins (“The Expendables 2”, “The Bourne Ultimatum”), Christian Slater and Yvette Yates (“Without Men“).
“El Gringo” marks the first time MANOWAR has written a song specifically for a movie. The song depicts the struggle of a hero torn between his moral code and financial gain, and the challenge of being true to oneself and the real values in life — a recurring theme in MANOWAR‘s music.
“Everyone loves action movies! Our music, along with ass-kicking visuals and a great story, are a perfect match, not to mention a chance to actually see the music come alive on screen,” said MANOWAR bassist and composer Joey DeMaio. “‘El Gringo’ has been a great experience, the team at After Dark Films has been a pleasure to work with, and we are ready for more!” he continued.
On March 12, a select group of special MANOWAR fans known as The Circle, who represent the band’s worldwide fan base, were invited to a private pre-listening session of the forthcoming MANOWAR album, as well as a tour of Wisseloord Studios.
MANOWAR bassist Joey DeMaio, and longtime collaborators, mixing engineer Ronald Prent and Grammy Award-winning mastering engineer Darcy Proper, provided insight into the making of a record, and the specific requirements in the production for a band that is world-renowned for a sound that is louder than any other band and yet equally clear and perfect.
Fans from all over the world were chosen to represent their countries and receive news and updates to share them with their fellow brothers and sisters, and listen to first songs from the new album that is set for release in June/July.
“It was important to us that the fans should be the first to hear the new music. After all, it is all for them!” explained DeMaio.
When asked about the long gap between MANOWAR‘s last CD and upcoming effort, DeMaio said, “I know that a lot of people don’t wanna wait another five years for a MANOWAR record, but we hope that people are gonna think that it was worth waiting the time. Because, you know, you go to a restaurant and you order dinner, if the waiter walks in the kitchen and comes back out two seconds later and puts the dinner on the table, I really don’t know what you’re gonna get. Every now and then I like McDonald’s, too — it doesn’t mean something fast is not good — but we’re not a fast-food restaurant with MANOWAR. We think it’s quality, so we hope you’re gonna feel the same way.”
MANOWAR will headline several European festivals this summer, celebrating their new album and the 10th anniversary of one of their most popular records, “Warriors Of The World”.
Joey Tempest and John Norum of Swedish hard rockers EUROPE played an intimate three-song acoustic set at the Feltrinelli in Milan, Italy on Monday, May 7. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below. Photos are available at the Musica Metal web site.
The setlist for the acoustic show was as follows:
01. Rock The Night
02. Not Supposed To Sing The Blues
03. Final Countdown
EUROPE‘s ninth studio album, “Bag Of Bones”, entered the official chart in the band’s home country at position No. 2.
“Bag Of Bones” was released in Europe on April 27 via earMusic/Edel. The CD, which features a guest appearance by blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa (BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION), was produced by Kevin Shirley, who has previously worked with IRON MAIDEN, JOE BONAMASSA, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION, BLACK STONE CHERRY and JOURNEY, among others.
“It’s more organic,” Tempest told Metal Shock Finland about the new CD. “Kevin Shirley brought in a warm ’70s sound. It’s a dynamic record, like vinyl almost.
“One of my [favorite songs on the CD], ‘Riches To Rags’ has quite a big chorus with exciting riffs.
“It’s a journey with an emotional ballad at the end, called ‘Bring It On Home’. Very much a classic rock album — more rock than hard rock.”
On the topic of “Bag Of Bones” also being released on vinyl, Joey said, “With the new ‘Bag Of Bones’ cover, there is so much detail on it. It became a bit boring there for a while; everybody was thinking, ‘CDs are small, so let’s just make something simple.’ But we have computers, so we can blow up the cover to use for posters and vinyl, so it’s still worth going that extra mile to make great covers. And we’re really happy we did that.”
The “Not Supposed To Sing The Blues” video was directed by Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company, who has previously worked with DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL, IN FLAMES, SONIC SYNDICATE and KAMELOT, among others.
The “Not Supposed To Sing The Blues” digital single was made available on March 9.
Regarding the new CD title, EUROPE drummer Ian Haugland said, “It’s not [called ‘Bag Of Bones’] because we all have lost tons of weight or found a new interest in archeology or dogs… It’s just because it sounds fuckin’ cool!”

Mountain Grave is a metal collective started by Brian Rush in 2005. The first official Mountain Grave release, “Darkness, Bloodshed, Chaos, Satan” was recorded in 2009. It is a lyrically satirical, yet aurally suffocating onslaught of black and death metal. Unreleased material kept accumulating and diversifying, spanning powerviolence to power metal. It was simply too draining to start a new group every time a new album had been visualised, and would surely not be coherent with the previous release. Brian teamed up with George Penney of Todesfaust for the 2010 demo, “Ruins,” a much sweeter style of extreme metal than the debut. Due to constant moving and the interests and strengths of new social circles, 2011 saw the black/thrash release, “Rage and Ruin”, recorded in Indiana with members of Partiac Arrest, Narrow House, Theophagy, and Lorenguard. June, 2012 will bring “The Ancient Disease”, an EP that will be their first release to feature a different style and lineup in every track. Mountain Grave’s future holds more of what you love, and even more of what you would least expect. Don’t be surprised when a bombastic symphonic metal opera propels you into bliss, counter attacked by ugly sludgy doom.
The album starts with the title song of the album Rage And Ruin which starts off with a little clean guitar riff that explodes into life with some powerful guitar riffs, harsh vocals and pounding drumbeats. The whole song is really well put together it from really fast guitar work then is slows down a then goes quick again with some galloping riffs and some really good fast solos a good start to the album. The next Three songs are Fleshcravers, The First Edict and Holocaust God they have some real quality riffs, solos the drums are pounded out sometimes with a galloping beat and the vocals are well put over with powerful force. The Fifth song is The Jackal’s Mange is starts off with a classic style riff then bursts into action with the harsh vocals that make the album what it is. Again the guitar work is played at such pace it is really well done, it then slows down a bit in the middle then picks up pace again towards the end, but it is a well balanced song. The next Three songs are Cruithin Na Cruin, Horrid Gutrag and a quality cover of Morphin Time(Power Rangers Theme) these songs have again more of the powerful riffs, pounding drums and quality harsh vocals. But the Power Rangers Theme was done to perfection I played it for my children and they instantly recognised it that was how well it was done. The Ninth song on the album is A Necromance and it starts off with some spoken words then comes in a classic style riff, the vocals on this are harsh but done with purpose. It also has some clean vocals in it, which gives it another edge to it near the start. The song has some really good riffs and solos in that make me want to get the old air guitar out and start shredding along to. The pounding drums smash out the rhythm and near the end it has some what sounds like an organ playing which again gives the song a different feel but it has been well worked into the song. The next Three songs on the album are Face Of The Martyr, The Divide and The Moshing Of The Nuns on the song Face Of The Martyr the vocals have a similarity to Cradle Of Filth but done very well. The rest of the songs are done in the same vein as the others fast riffs, hard harsh vocals, pounding drums and stunning solos. The Thirteenth song on the album is Return The World starts off with a powerful riff and pounding drums then the vocals come in. The song continues to have some really heavy thrash riffs in it then slows down in the middle of the song with a clean riff then bursts into life again with a stunning solo accompanied with the pounding drums and harsh vocals another good strong song here. The next song is Messengers it has everything you need fast paced riffs heavy drumbeats and good quality harsh vocals. The last song on the album is Ruin Of The Innocent starts off with another good riff quickly followed by the vocals, The power of the guitar riffs is really good and the vocals and drums make it a really good end to the album.
Overall
This is a good quality heavy Thrash album that will get you rocking till the end. It is full of high-speed riffs accompanied by some quality harsh vocals, stunning solos and powerful pounding drumbeats. It has got some added bonus stuff in with some organs in one of the songs, which gives it an added dimension to the album but It has been well done.
8/10
