The highly anticipated new album by classic blues rock band CRY FOR MERCY, ‘This Machine,’ is set for release in April 2025. The North Wales powerhouse trio delivers a raw, unapologetic collection of music that stands as their best work to date.

Ahead of the release, the band have released a new video for album track, ‘Show Me.’

Formed in late 2018, Cry for Mercy has become a standout force in the UK underground rock scene, known for their exciting live performances and signature blend of classic blues rock with a hard-hitting modern twist. Their critically acclaimed releases to date have earned the band widespread praise, and their upcoming new album, This Machine, promises to satisfy fans of classic ’70s-infused blues rock.

Cry for Mercy draws deeply from the rich tradition of British blues rock, paying homage to the greats while pushing boundaries with modern influences. Their sound is defined by the soulful, commanding vocals of frontman Kev Plant, the evocative, guitar-driven melodies of Andy Cutty, and the dynamic, thunderous beats of their rhythm section (This Machine features Kev on bass guitar and his son Aled on drums). Described by critics as “AC/DC fronted by Paul Rodgers,” the band’s distinctive style has become their hallmark. Praised for their “luxuriant guitar work” and “muscle-bound drumming,” Cry for Mercy embodies the essence of classic blues rock with a fresh, high-energy edge.

The band’s relentless passion and dedication have propelled them to prominence in the UK rock scene. As finalists in major competitions like Hard Rock Hell’s Highway to Hell and North Wales’ BOA (Bloodstock Festival) Metal to the Masses, Cry for Mercy have showcased their talent on iconic stages. The band has shared stages with renowned acts like The Quireboys, Danny Bryant, Pat McManus Band,Chantel McGregor, and Warrior Soul, delivering unforgettable sets at festivals such as Wildfire Festival in Scotland and the prestigious Breaking Bands Festival. Their performances are a testament to their experience, professionalism, and the raw chemistry of a classic power trio.

The new album, ‘This Machine,’ has been a labour of love for the group. Self-funded by the band and recorded at Absolute Studios in Salford under the guidance of trusted producer/engineer Ben McEwan, the album captures the raw chemistry and creative energy of Cry for Mercy at their best.
Musically, This Machine pushes boundaries, incorporating influences from soul, Motown, and classic blues-inspired rock to create a dynamic soundscape. From full-throttle rockers like Walking With The Enemy, the emotive and compelling tonality of Show Me, to the beautifully crafted ballad Nothing At All, Cry for Mercy channels raw emotion and rich soundscapes throughout this new album.

Vocalist Kev Plant says, “The new record really brings out the best in our songwriting, building on the style that we have developed over the last five years but also utilising some of the techniques we have developed in the studio to expand the sound without detracting from who we are as a band.

The subtle use of keyboards and the layering of the guitars is a little different for us, but the results are the best record we have made to date.

We again worked really quickly in the studio, and the whole thing was recorded in six days. This is a reflection of the care with which we approached the process—making sure all of our ideas were recorded and rehearsed to studio standard, while still leaving room for some creativity during the recording. We feel that this is reflected in the results.”

At its core the new album, ‘This Machine’, is a raw, unapologetic dive into the human experience—love, heartbreak, resilience, and the search for meaning, all laid bare with the grit and soul that classic blues rock fans live for. Every track feels like a conversation, pulling listeners into stories that echo their own lives, rich with authentic, heart-stirring lyrics. This is music that grabs you by the collar and speaks straight to your soul; unfiltered, real, and deeply resonant.

‘This Machine’ is more than just an album; it’s a personal, cathartic, and shared expression of Cry For Mercy’s artistry, poured out for classic rock fans to connect with and enjoy. “We love it… We hope you do too,” says the band.

‘This Machine’ by Cry for Mercy is released 4th April 2025.

MANTAR Unleash ‘Rex Perverso’ Video / Single

“Rex Perverso” is the scathing new single from MANTAR‘s forthcoming new full-length, Post Apocalyptic Depression, set for release on February 14th through Metal Blade Records.

Where 2022’s Pain Is Forever And This Is The End saw the German duo bring a sonic richness to their madly heavy blackened death-punk grooves, assisting the record to its position at #2 on Germany’s Official Top 10 album chart, this year’s Post Apocalyptic Depression smashes the palette and punches a hole in the canvas. “We wanted to do everything different from the last album,” affirms guitarist/vocalist Hanno Klänhardt. “The last album was very produced. A huge sounding record with clean production. Display of power. That was what we wanted and felt at that time. Now we are trying to destroy what we’ve built up with the last album. There is a certain beauty in disappointing people’s expectations.”

The ethos is clear from the first two words Hanno uses to describe the recording process: “Quick and dirty. We didn’t even bring our own gear to the studio, and just used the equipment that we would find there. There was zero planning involved in the making of this album. We wanted to keep it as primitive as possible. We were bolder this time and literally cut any shit off the songs that we didn’t think was necessary. I think you can hear that and playing these new songs is more fun. I feel very connected with my punk roots on this album. Very punk rock production and next to our first album definitely the most raw sounding one.”

That snarling attitude spits out of the speakers on beautifully titled smash-and-grab volleys like “Church Of Suck,” “Rex Perverso,” and “Axe Death Scenario,” written in far closer collaboration than is the norm for a two-man band living on different continents (Hanno in America, Erinc in Germany). This, and the super-focused speed of the recording, seemed to act as an emollient corrective after the highly stressful process of making Pain Is Forever… two years ago. “It was the worst time and experience we have had as a band and as friends so far,” recalls Hanno. “The band almost broke up during the making of the last album. So, this album was some sort of spiritual healing. As a band and as friends. Without any serious plans, we wrote twenty songs in just a couple of days. Some good, some awesome. Making this record saved our asses, the band, and maybe even more.”

Of today’s single, “Rex Perverso,” Hanno further elaborates, “The title roughly translates to ‘king of the perverts,’ a title apparently worn with pride worldwide. This song is all about groove which has always been a main priority and one of the strongest weapons of the band. It’s catchy and on point. The song triggers simple and primitive instincts. It’s over before you realize you’ve felt it.”

Formed in 2013, MANTAR has been recognized as one of the hardest working among the German extreme metal underground. MANTAR manages to sound heavier than most five piece bands you may know, in spite of the fact that no bass guitar is used on this record. Just drums and guitar set for destruction. Forget about rock ‘n’ roll. This will hurt. Flogging beats and blackened melodies meet feedback orgies and doom mayhem. Early Melvins, Motörhead, Darkthrone. You name it. Don’t call it sludge though…

Symphonic VOIVOD Show Review by The Metal Voice: Progressive Thrash, Meets Class

Posted by tarjavirmakari on January 30, 2025
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: The Metal Voice, Voivod. Leave a comment

Two nights only (Jan 29-30, 2025) at the world famous Place Des Arts Centre (Wilfrid Pelletier Hall), It’s Voivod meets The Montreal Symphony Orchestra for the first time, conducted by Dina Gilbert. It’s Progressive Thrash, meets Class. Today we talk opening night.

Voivod, hailing from Jonquière, Quebec 43 years ago now based in Greater Montreal, with the present line-up consisting of guitarist Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain (2008–present), bassist Dominic “Rocky” Laroche (2014–present) and co-founders vocalist Denis “Snake” Bélanger and, drummer Michel “Away” Langevin. The band found mainstream success in the late 1980s with their fifth studio album Nothingface (1989). However nothing has stopped this band’s upwards global momentum in the past decade and a testament to this are accolades such as the band winning the “Visionary” award at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards. In 2019, Voivod’s fourteenth studio album, The Wake, winning the Juno Award for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year and in 2023 another Juno for Metal/Hard Music Album Of The Year’ Category For ‘Synchro Anarchy’

The band musically has never stopped evolving, changing and mutating, always putting the band musical challenges first and foremost and their fans joining them on their ride. The constant pivoting of the band also led them premiering their long anticipated documentary last year entitled WE ARE CONNECTED at the Fantasia Festival documenting the band’s journey to the present times. (more to come on that)

So this is where we are today, Voivod taking on yet another musical challenge of fusing their world, with the classical world.

I will be honest when the idea came out that Vovoid would do a symphonic performance I may have paused for a second saying, wha?? But as the idea settled it all seemed so clear, welcoming and exciting. The band’s music may sound punky, alternative and thrashy to the layman but when you peel away the layers of Voivod music the core is intricate, progressive, epic and precise. Which is exactly what Classical music is as well.

Exclusive Premiere for Finland: WITHERING SURFACE ‘The Misery I Keep’ Official Video

Coming out of one of the best years in their career (with a Japanese tour to close it with a golden key), Danish melodic death metallers WITHERING SURFACE don’t rest on their laurels and present their brand new song and official video.

“The Misery I Keep” is a straight on melodic death metal song with an aggressive edge and a chorus with a hook. Giving everything you got, and never being good enough, and in the end the only thing you have left is the misery. This song was composed and recorded especially for the Japanese version of the the latest Withering Surface album “Exit Plan” and the song was played live on the band’s Japan tour in Autumn.

The music video features footage from the Japanese tour. In February to April 2025 Withering Surface will be co-headlining the Metalized tour in Denmark with eight shows across Denmark alongside Panzerchrist and Trold and later in 2025 the band will play other festivals, including the Lion’s Metalfest in Lyon, France.

Join the premiering here:

“Exit Plan” is the 6th studio album from Withering Surface following the success of the 2020-comeback album “Meet You Maker”. The process of the “Exit Plan” album was long and challenging with various recording session, line-up changes, producers and on top of that all the obstacles with Covid and post-Covid. The fact that the band’s engagements with Copenhell and various other festivals in 2020 were postponed two years to 2022 could easily have killed Withering Surface that was making a comeback after 15 years in slumber. Instead, all efforts were put into the making of “Exit Plan”. An album where both songwriting and lyrical concept appear stronger than ever for the band. Topping this is the production by Soren Andersen (Medley Studio), mainly known in rock and hard rock circles for his work with artists like Thundermother, Tygers Of Pan Tang and Glenn Hughes. Soren Andersen was not the obvious choice of producer for a melodic death metal band but ended up being the perfect match for Withering Surface anno 2024 delivering a huge over-the-top sound.

Allan Tvedebrink says “Right after we dropped “Meet Your Maker” all our gigs and plans were scrapped because of the pandemic and it obviously created a huge void for us. I’m very proud of that album, but when it was finished, I felt that we could do better and, because of the wide open schedule, I immediately started working on “Exit Plan”. The new material is focused on a much more direct and intense approach and it is by far the strongest compilation of songs we have ever done to represent an album. In the process of creating “Exit Plan” we had lots of set backs. Deciding to let our new drummer go after we recorded the drums, having a new guitarist on board and losing our keyboard player took some extra time, but also made us re-visit the material and get everything right. The challenges and the decisions made in the process definitely made the album way better”.

Soren Andersen: “I was initially hired as the mixing engineer but I have ended up becoming a superfan. This is how I feel about Withering Surface and their forthcoming album “Exit Plan”. They are by far the most extreme band I have ever worked with. Musically I have no other bands to compare them with besides Faith No More and Soilwork. After a few mixes I totally fell in love with the sound of the band, and never before have I challenged myself as much as I have working upon this album. Combining brutal riffs, a powerhouse rhythm section, screaming vocals, melodic solos and imaginative songwriting, this is all I could ever ask for in a metal band”.

Singer Michael Hvolgaard Andersen adds: “Vocal wise I wanted to go back to the roots of Withering Surface. Capturing some of the spirit from the frustrated 19-year old me. Songs on the new album like “Where Dreamers Die” and “You Hurt This Child” show that. I was not sure I still had that throat capacity and aggression in me but proved myself wrong. I always had the desire to make catchy sing-a-long choruses. In the past they were on songs like “Dancing With Faries” and “Joyless Journey”. On “Exit Plan” this desire is brought to life on “Denial Denial Denial”, “Finish What You Started” and “I Finally Lost (All Faith In Humanity)”. Since the formation of Withering Surface, Allan’s songwriting felt natural for me to make vocal lines and melodies on and on “Exit Plan” I truly believe he delivered his strongest material to date which by the end of the day is the reason that made my voice sound strong and have me deliver that little extra”.

The lyrical concept
“Exit Plan” is about breaking boundaries and norms that have been set for one. To put a mental period and start over. To get complete clarity about where you are and are going and want to end = “Exit Plan”. Song titles include “Where Dreamers Die”, “Mindreader”, “You Hurt This Child” and “I Finally Lost (All Faith In Humanity)” and are all with a lyrical foundation in the aforementioned outlook on life, sex, shame, religion and a fading view of humanity.

“Exit Plan” is a lyrical extension of its predecessor “Meet Your Maker”, where a religious meeting with the higher powers made the protagonist realise that there is no help to be had from anyone but the person himself. That you stand alone. That the only one who can help you is yourself. Cold cynicism and power do not go hand in hand with charity. Forget the norm and anything that doesn’t work for you. No excuse, no blame. You are not a social experiment. The thanks you get when you’re gone are worthless and remember one of man’s greatest qualities is to repress.

“Exit Plan” is out now on LP (black vinyl), CD and digital formats via Mighty Music.

Lineup:
Michael Hvolgaard Andersen – vocals
