While recognized as trailblazers for their melodic and macabra vision, to celebrate their 20th anniversary, Crippled Black Phoenix are rewriting their introduction to the world of metal. The first chapter of their upcoming two-part compilation album presents new versions of the dark rock band’s early signature songs, including a gloomier “Goodnight, Europe (Pt2)” and updated lyrics for the ever-prescient “444”.

The Wolf Changes Its Fur But Not Its Nature comes out on CD and vinyl November 29 on Season of Mist, but the album is now available to stream on digital platforms.

The Wolf Changes Its Fur But Not Its Nature revisits many of Crippled Black Phoenix’s beloved endtime ballads, but the album proves that this band stand the test of time. From the extended odyssey “Song For The Unloved” to lost classic “Whissendine”, Justin Greaves (ex Iron Monkey and Electric Wizard), long-time vocalist Belinda Kordic and their trusted collaborators remain committed to giving a voice to the voiceless.

The second part of this compilation continues the UK band’s tradition of haunting homages. Horrific HonorificsNumber Two (2) features new covers of Fugazi, NoMeansNo, Deep Purple, Built to Spill and Lauran Branigan’s Top 10 hit “Self Control”. Both the digital and physical versions of this covers album come out November 29.

The thread that binds CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX’s bold and towering discography — a dozen studio albums, a half-dozen mini-albums, a handful of compilations and swaths of bootlegs — could not be more apropos circa 2022. Since its 2004 creation by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Justin Greaves, CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX has served as the voice for the voiceless, whether it be animals, the unequal and the different. Greaves and longstanding vocalist and lyricist Belinda Kordic have often proffered that these beings cannot fend for themselves. Henceforth, CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX’s mission has been to shed light on the human condition and the inequalities that befall humankind and its creatures. Their battle marches on with their latest studio album, Banefyre.

Banefyre follows 2020’s Ellengæst — an effort that found CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX employ a series of notable guest vocalists alongside Kordic, prompting Metal Hammer to describe it as their “most cohesive and emotionally devastating record.” Kordic is now paired with Swedish vocalist Joel Segerstedt, who made his CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX debut last year via the “Painful Reminder/Dead is Dead” single. Piano, synth and trumpet player Helen Stanley and additional guitarist Andy Taylor complete the lineup. Greaves says Stanley and Taylor “fit so well creatively,” which has made CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX feel like a band when making plans and decisions.

Also central to this is Segerstedt. According to Kordic, the vocalist and lyricist lives a mere five minutes from her in Sweden and has quickly integrated himself into the band. “What I like about Joel is that he’s a good person,” she says. “There’s no fakeness with him; he has cajones. He’s not a bitch-talker, either. I can’t handle people who don’t have a backbone, but Joel is real and can speak his mind.”

“I like how Joel has come in and spoke for himself,” adds Greaves. “He’s in the band for the right reasons. I see him the same way as Belinda — she took an interest in the whole artistic thing behind CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX, like the vocals, lyrics, artwork and aesthetic. It’s the same with Joel. He has taken an interest in all of those things. In the past, we had people who didn’t contribute artistically and only cared about what they got out of the band. But Joel is really proactive and takes the initiative.”

Greaves assembled 13 songs (including “No Regrets,” a bonus track for his new project with Kordic, Johnny the Boy) imbued with the depth and introspection that will reinforce CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX’s standing as a band that defies genre. The album was tracked at Chapel Studios in South Thoresby, Lincolnshire, with vocals cut at Monolith Studio and Kapsylen Studio in Stockholm, Sweden. Kurt Ballou handled mixing in GodCity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts — a pivotal move in determining the album’s overall sound.

“I love the album so much because it was a different approach with the production,” says Greaves. “For my part, it was a little bit of a reaction. I didn’t want to do the same warm, safe CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX album. I’m aware that when we did [2012’s] I, Vigilante, everyone wanted I, Vigilante again. As it so often happens with this band, people complain about the next one, then grow into it. Ellengæst is like I, Vigilante. It’s a shorter album. It hit the mark and was done really well, but everyone will expect another Ellengæst. I feared that, but I care enough not to make another Ellengæst. It’s the right thing to do. That’s why we got Kurt to mix it — we wanted that analog, raw power. Even though the album has mellow moments, those are edgy as well. We just didn’t want to do the same album twice. We’re never going to be a band that people can rely on.”

Greaves’ summation of his band notwithstanding, his distinctive guitar playing and enduring knack for immersive songwriting is the propellent behind the haunting, chant-laden “Ghostland,” pensive “The Reckoning” and forlorn “Everything is Beautiful but Us,” the band’s spot-on analysis of the retreat of humankind indoors during the pandemic that revealed nature’s priceless beauty. The album is also stocked with no less than four ten-minute-plus cuts (“Rose of Jericho,” “Down the Rabbit Hole,” “I’m Okay, Just Not Alright” and “The Scene is a False Prophet”) that are intermixed with drama and melancholy.

It all ties into Banefyre’s central theme of the persecution of people who are deemed “different” by society. The album title is a play on the song “Bonefire” that Kordic named and wrote lyrics for. In classic CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX fashion, Greaves turned it into the Olde English translation to represent the bonfires that engulfed witches and politicians through the 15th and 18th centuries, hence, the name Banefyre.

The album begins with “Incantation for the Different,” which was written and orated by Chicago-based witch, artist, author and occultist Shane Bugbee, who, according to Greaves, “brought us some positive, dark energy.” Banefyre then delves into the Salem Witch Trials (“Wyches and Basterdz”), fox hunting in Great Britain (“The Reckoning”), politicians of an unscrupulous and dishonest kind (“Bonefire”) and the New York City Blackout of 1977 (“Blackout77”).

Greaves says Banefyre’s topics may have a decidedly negative and pessimistic tone, but a glimmer of hope and joy remains. “There’s always the random bits, but overall, Banefyre is about the people who have suffered because they are different. The album covers inequality and oppression, like ‘Incantation for the Different,’ which is about overcoming when you’re put down because you’re not like everyone else.”

In true CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX fashion, the Lucy Marshall-created Banefyre cover leaves plenty to the imagination, depicting four animals seated at a table — interacting and dressed like human beings. “It’s sort of like Planet of the Apes showing what animals could do to humans,” says Greaves. “The cover was specially commissioned and is unique to the album. It’s incorporating all the classic CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX elements with the love for animals and twisting the narrative around.”

CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX’s reputation was built on the back of their studio albums and live shows. The pandemic prevented the band from supporting Ellengæst, but it did provide them additional time to bring in new members to their live configuration.

“We’ve done one show since 2019,” says Greaves. “We are going to do something in Europe this year. Hopefully, we can get back on track. We’re also going to do something in the States — that’s not just talk, we’re actually going to do it. It’s well overdue. The live band is fucking amazing. We have the five of us and now we have Jordi [Farré] on drums, Paco [Fleischfresser] on synth and a really good friend of mine, Matt Crawford on bass.

“We did the Leipzig show and even though the rehearsals were better than the show itself, that lineup, our live band, is so good. Because we haven’t been under pressure to put a live band together since 2019 and spent so long talking to people, we’ve got a better band from those results. Out of disaster, we’ve got quite a good, positive thing.”

The Wolf Changes Its Fur But Not Its Nature & Horrific Honorifics Number Two(2) are a double album celebrating the 20 year existence of CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX.

WEITE Present New Single ‘Time Will Paint Another Picture’ from Upcoming Studio Album

WEITE, the prog-psych/krautrock band featuring Nicholas DiSalvo (Elder, Delving), Michael Risberg (Elder, delving), Ingwer Boysen (delving), Ben Lubin (Lawns) and Fabien deMenou (Perilymph), has shared a new single, “Time Will Paint Another Picture”, to appear on their much-awaited, forthcoming studio album “Oase”! Slated for a release on November 22, 2024 through Stickman Records, the album pre-sale is now available at this location: https://www.stickman-records.com/shop/weite-oase/

“Oase” is the sophomore album from the Berlin-based collective, and the follow-up to the band’s 2023 debut LP “Assemblage”. Clocking in at almost an hour, “Oase” — German for “Oasis” — takes listeners on an intricate and textured journey that draws inspiration from the pioneering spirit of 70s psychedelic rock, blending influences from “Canterbury scene” prog, Krautrock, early electronica, post rock, and Americana. The new album showcases Weite‘s ability to merge the old with the new, creating an immersive, exploratory sound that moves from contemplative and pastoral to riffy and doomy without ever sacrificing melody. “Oase” is characterized by longer expansive, atmospheric compositions yet is undoubtedly more composed than the band’s debut, with more of a focus on songs, albeit in the broader sense of the word. With the focus on melody, texture and mood— although not necessarily always in that order — Weite create a sound that’s intricate and meditative, inviting the listener to embark on a journey through shifting soundscapes and evolving musical narratives.

Their latest single, “Time Will Paint Another Picture”, is out now on all digital streaming services at: https://bfan.link/time-will-paint-another-picture

Just recently, the band premiered a video for the song “Roter Traum”, watch the clip streaming here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9tHgFgfKk0

Weite was formed in Berlin in winter 2022 by bassist Ingwer Boysen recruiting drummer Nick DiSalvo  and guitarists Michael Risberg and Ben Lubin. Initially intended as a one-off recording session, the four recognized an obvious musical chemistry and common ground and decided to turn the project into a proper band. Keyboardist Fabien deMenou joined in 2024.

“We’re really proud of this album and worked super hard to channel all our influences into it: everything from the 70s prog we all love, to krautrock, americana and ambient, among other stuff,” Ben Lubin recently said. “It’s definitely much stronger compositionally-speaking because of it, and we’re a much better band after gigging over the past year since the first LP came out.”

“Weite has come to embody a sort of collective spirit both within the band and within our little Berlin scene – musicians and friends, all in a seemingly rotating cast with each others’ bands, as guest musicians, tour help, etc.”, Nick DiSalvo adds. “Each member takes the strengths and experiences from their other projects and pours it into our music, which results in a pretty interesting mashup, especially the longer we play together. “Oase” is for me personally an homage to the little oases in life: the couch, the rehearsal space, and yes, even the Späti – a Berlin biotope, a small convenience store where you can sit and take a break from the daily stress and enjoy a drink, a smoke or a conversation.”

“Oase” will be available on 180gr. pink marbled 2LP, on CD and digitally on November 22, 2024 via Stickman Records. In support of “Oase”, Weite will be starting on tour in early 2025. Find all upcoming dates listed below!

CHANGELING’s Self-Titled Debut Album Welcomes All-Star Line-Up

CHANGELING, the visionary music project spearheaded by the eminent Tom Fountainhead, is thrilled to reveal the extraordinary ensemble of core musicians contributing to their highly-anticipated self-titled debut album. This electrifying venture under the auspices of the Season of Mist label propels Fountainhead’s signature guitar playing into the stratosphere of genre-defying mastery.

Tom Fountainhead has had an incredible career as one of metal’s most prolific guitar players. He has worked with globally recognized artists and projects such as Obscura, Belphegor, Defeated Sanity, Nader Sadek and countless others. With a constant creative flame burning in Fountainhead’s spirit, the Changeling project is a new venture for Tom. “When I first starting writing the material that eventually became “Changeling”, it was initially conceived as a new band together with my old pal Christian Münzner (Alkaloid, Obscura, Necrophagist, Spawn of Possession).” Tom notes. “At the time, we were both unhappy with being prevented from performing the material that each of us had written and performed for Obscura and it felt only natural to join forces in a new project and to continue where both of us had left off with that specific style of technical death metal.” Changeling essentially became an endeavor for Tom & Christian to realize their creative freedom with.

Left to right: Mike Heller – Morean – Arran McSporran

“Together, we compiled a list of potential musicians to work with and Mike’s name was on top of the list for both of us, not only as one of the very top drummers in the scene, equally at home playing extreme metal as well as fusion or prog, but also because we had already spent time together on tour.” Says Tom. Mike Heller (Fear Factory, Malignancy, Raven) was an obvious choice to make. With his unyielding precision and dynamic drumming, he sets an unshakable foundation for Changeling’s complex soundscapes.

“I met Tom many years ago when he was playing with my buddies in Defeated Sanity. We knew back then that it was only a matter of time before we would work together on something. Needless to say, I was excited when he gave me a call to see if I’d be interested in helping him get “Changeling” off the ground. I didn’t hesitate even for a second, and definitely enjoyed the challenge of helping to bring his vision to life. What a bastard of an undertaking, but I can’t wait to see what the world thinks of it!”  – Mike Heller

Christian joined back up with Obscura – which left Tom to push his own material into different and exciting territories. With Tom & Mike now joining forces, the search for a vocalist began. “Continuing on my own also made it possible to finally work with Morean, who was still bandmates with Chris in Alkaloid at that point. Him and I had first met through Nader Sadek, with whom we both played shows around 2016.” says Tom. “Morian is somebody whom I greatly respect and admire and having the opportunity to do an album together was a dream come true. I consider him a friend, an inspiration and my favorite composer & lyricist in the genre, so he really was my one and only choice to be the voice of “Changeling”.” The enigmatic Morean (Alkaloid, Dark Fortress), known for his poetic lyricism and mesmerizing vocal prowess, injects a profound and introspective element into Changeling’s vast sonic pallet.

“In the early days of the pandemic, Tom Fountainhead approached me to see if I was interested to supply vocals and lyrics for his new album, which at the time was in its early stages of songwriting. My only possible answer was “yes, of course”! […] We share a wide horizon of influences and interests, so this collaboration was an open door to push each other further and further in ambition and lust for innovation. On “Changeling”, Tom managed to apply the same uncompromising commitment to originality and virtuosity in his songwriting as he does in his guitar playing […]” – Morean

The project Changeling was also conceived for Tom to pick up where he left off with the Obscura album ‘Akróasis’ (2016). In Tom’s words, “[…] it meant that we needed an extremely capable bass player in order to expand on the combination of fretless guitar and bass parts that we originated on that album.” This is how Arran McSporran (Virvum, Vipassi) got involved. “Initially a bit of a wildcard decision, he was the one person that I didn’t know personally before we started recording, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” Tom notes. Thus, on fretless bass, Arran joined the existing trio – finalizing the core of what would become Changeling.

“When Tom asked me to be involved in the project I jumped at the chance because I’m a big fan of his playing. Then when he mentioned Mike, Morean and some of the guests that would also be taking part I was really excited to hear what the culmination of these disparate inflences would sound like – particularly after I first started talking to Tom regarding his concept for the project and we found out that we have many of the same favourite bands, artists and influences, which made me feel right at home! This album has some of the most outrageous bass parts I’ve ever recorded, underneath some of the most outrageous guitar solos I’ve ever heard with some incredible playing by all the people involved. Tom’s a wizard and what an honour it was to play fretless together on this album!” – Arran McSporran

CHANGELING will be releasing their debut self-titled album in 2025 on Season of Mist. With these four core members and over thirty guest features ranging from Metal’s most prolific guitarists to grandiose orchestras and choirs, the debut Changeling is set to shake the core of the metal realm.

ELUVEITIE Release “Ategnatos (Deluxe Edition)”, Out Now

ELUVEITIE, renowned for their unique blend of melodic death metal and traditional Celtic music, have consistently captivated audiences worldwide with their rich musical heritage and dynamic live performances. Following the success of their critically acclaimed album, Ategnatos, the band release today a deluxe edition of Ategnatos, with three acoustic versions.

ELUVEITIE frontman Chrigel Glanzmann comments: “So this is the last page of the ATEGNATOS manifesto that we turn over and with abandon immerse into the realm of ÀNV.  In a pretty personal sense ATEGNATOS already paved the way for ÀNV, arising as the incarnation of the spirit we have been following for 20 years now. ÀNV appears like an entity itself – it is who we are.  It is art, music, meaning and soul of a deeply Celtic spirit, ancient, natural and pagan to the core, having both feet planted in the here and now of our modern age.”

HANGMAN’S CHAIR to Release New Album “Saddiction” on February 14th, Unveil Video for New Track ‘Kowloon Nights’

Ahead of their next studio album, Saddiction, due on 14th February 2025 via Nuclear Blast, French doom metal pioneers HANGMAN´S CHAIR are back in full force with ‘Kowloon Nights‘. This powerful, shoegaze-influenced track, with its disconcerting guitar riff, is a direct reference to the city destroyed in the 90s.

HANGMAN’S CHAIR comments about Saddiction: “SADDICTION is the contraction of 2 words, sadness and addiction. It means the addiction to sadness. 7th effort of the band, for us, Saddiction is the second album of the new trilogy started with A Loner back in 2022 and it’s the logical continuity. Keeping up with the cold, massively reverbed and chorused atmosphere but now mixed with what Hangman’s Chair has been known for, the heaviness and the low tuned sound, thanks to the magical sound engineer Francis Caste, once again. Valnoir of Metastazis designed the cover and resumed what the identity of Hangman’s Chair is all about in its purest form, concrete, pavement, bleakness and ultra modern solitude of the Parisian « banlieue ». Now, please don’t blame us for your saddiction. It has always been here. In your hearts, February 14th 2025.”

HANGMAN’S CHAIR continues about ‘Kowloon Nights‘: “Walking hand in hand into Kowloon lights in a no moon night, at a loss. Where the neons replaces the sunlight. Like in a Gaspard Noe’s film, Into The Void, we discover every lost souls hiding behind their windows appartment. Each of them with their own vices, regrets and dreams. Your home has become the barrel of a gun and finally the bones of your body become the only neons that enlight the lost souls of the city. Dehn Sora remarkably designed this 3D video for our new single, a glimpse of the new album Saddiction.”

Saddiction Tracklist

  1. To Know The Night
  2. The Worst is Yet To Come
  3. In Disguise
  4. Kowloon Lights
  5. 2 AM Thoughts (feat DOOL)
  6. Canvas
  7. Neglect
  8. 44 YOD
  9. Healed?

HANGMAN’S CHAIR, formed in 2005 in Paris, are one of the most unique sounding Doom Rock bands currently active. Through the years, they have found and fine-tuned their own sonic brand, somewhere at the crossroads between TYPE O NEGATIVE, LIFE OF AGONY and SISTERS OF MERCY, to name a few, mixed with a certain street credibility connected to the group’s roots in hardcore. Each album takes its strength and essence from the band members’s life experiences, which they portrait with unflinching honesty. Whether it is the loss of band members, drug overdoses or the hardships of living in suburban Paris, all those human emotions resonate within each of their songs asthey embrace the darkness and transform it into something beautiful, heavy and melancholic.

Sheffield’s metal powerhouse MALEVOLENCE have unleashed their brand-new single, ‘TRENCHES,’ embodying the raw resilience and grit of their Steel City roots. This standalone track is the first glimpse of their partnership with Grammy-winning producer Josh Wilbur, known for his work with heavyweights like Lamb of God, Korn, and Gojira. Amplifying their Northern backdrop, MALEVOLENCE also collaborated with in-demand director duo Double or Nothing Productions for a Metal video debut that demonstrates their unique identity in British Metal.

Vocalist Alex Taylor comments: “Trenches is possibly the most aggressive, ignorant and direct song we have ever written. Over the last few years, we’ve been playing more in the commercial metal circuit at festivals and arenas, so we wanted to take this opportunity to remind people that we still haven’t lost sight of where we came from. The lyrics are a declaration of not needing validation or approval, and a rejection of those who never supported the journey but only show their face when you achieve some level of success.”
