FUNERAL return with “Yestertear”, the haunting second single from the Norwegian doom metal mainstay’s upcoming ninth album Gospel of Bones. The band weaves a somber yet resilient tale through their melancholic soundscapes. “Yestertear” is a cathartic vessel, sailing through the darkest waters of human grief, only to emerge on the shores of mournful beauty.
Produced by the legendary Børge Finstad and adorned with the ethereal harmonies of Ingvild “Sareeta” Johannesen, Gospel of Bones is an opus of mourning carved in nightmarish tones and relentless dirges. Each track meticulously showcases Funeral’s mastery in articulating the grim yet inspiring journey through pain and loss.
“Yestertear” drowns in intricate melodies and the profound anguish woven with care by the hands of the Anders Eek (Drums, Guitars, Vocals) Erlend E. Nybo (Guitars), Rune Gandrud (Bass), Sareeta (Violin, Backing Vocals), Stian Kråbøl (Guitars) & Eirik P. Krokfjord (Vocals). Eek’s dismal symphonies echo across every note, leading through the desolate beauty of remembered sorrow and past hauntings. We are not merely listeners but fellow mourners, each phrase a whisper in the grand requiem of existence.

Melancholy. Pain. Loss. Solitude. Those had been just some of doom metal main themes ever since bleak pouring rain and the sound of church bell in the distance gave birth to the genre on BLACK SABBATH self-eponymous debut over five decades ago. But how many musicians have actually been bearing in their very flesh those gut-wrenching feelings?
Anders Eek – FUNERAL’s founding member, drummer and indisputable leader since 1991 – doesn’t particularly see it as a badge of honour, but he’d be the first to admit that somehow, the “death and loss we had to go through over the years were extremely painful yet inspiring, as a musician and as a human being.” And indeed, ever since their very first rehearsal in a basement in their hometown of Drammen, just outside of Oslo, Funeral had been ridden with problems and tragedy. Originally inspired by CATHEDRAL, CANDLEMASS, BLACK SABBATH, TROUBLE etc, they very quickly set out to create the most depressing and slowest form of doom/death possible at a time when their home country was being hailed as the birthplace of black metal. They went through several labels over the years, only to see them bust soon afterwards. Plagued by recurrent line-up problems, they even lost two of their key members Einar André Fredriksen (bass) and Christian Loos (guitar) in 2003 and 2006, respectively, to suicide and overdose.
But somehow, Eek never surrendered, but instead overcame all those obstacles by releasing over the years a slab of classics, each with its own, distinct personality, from the utter misery of the delicate yet none-so-extreme 1995 debut album ‘Tragedies’ to the more melodic and accessible 2001 gothic/doom masterpiece ‘In Fields Of Pestilent Grief’ or 2012 symphonic masterpiece ‘Oratorium’. Still, after the 30th anniversary concert in Oslo, april 12th 2022, also featuring the original singer Toril Snyen on the track «taarene», “life got in the way” as Anders puts it. “Some of us had kids, others moved out. Even I had quite a lot of things going on in my personal life and, at least for a while, maybe less drive to keep on carrying on the weight of the band on my shoulders. I never stopped writing music though because it’s something I’ve always done anyway.
2021 sees the band releasing Praesentialis in Aeternum (something along the line of “here eternally”) as a “natural progression. Guesting on opening track ‘Ånd,’ the first single off the record, is Lars Nedland, Sindre’s own brother of BORKNAGAR and SOLEFALD fame. It’s also the first album for their new partner, Season of Mist.
In 2020 Eek started writing what was to become the album Gospel of Bones, to be released in October 2024.
In 2022 Singer Sindre Nedland was replaced by the professionally trained baritone opera singer Eirik Krokfjord (specialized in the works of Richard Wagner), known from both the Norwegian Opera Choir, as well as having several leading roles in operas both in Norway and abroad.
Violinist Ingvild Johannessen also joined the ranks, and the band moved away from programmed orchestration, and recorded all strings analogue.. This time around also incorporating the traditional Norwegian instrument the Harding fiddle, which is a key element throughout the entire upcoming album, moving the band slightly towards a more «folk» sound, combined with the classical opera-vocals of E. Krokfjord. Hopefully building bridges between both metal music, folk- rock and classical music.
Roughly 20 tracks were composed throughout the Covid pandemic(9 of whom made it to the studio), and yet again recorded and mixed at Toproom Studio, by Børge Finstad.
Violinist Øyvind Rauset, from the cult Norwegian folk-rock band FOLQUE, is performing on 2 tracks as a guest musician, as well as Espen Ingierd, with his very distinct singing-style in the vein of John Lennon, Michael Gira (SWANS)etc from cult doom/death band BEYOND DAWN singing on 2 tracks.
The album also contains an instrumental cover song , written by Kjetil Selvik, and is a melancholic piece only consisting of harding fiddle and church organ.
The lyrical content of the album is an autobiography of life’s mishaps of drummer/composer A. Eek, and deals with real darkness, misery, pain and loss. A Gospel of Bones.
Coping Method‘s first full length album – Where Spirit Meets Bone – is available for pre-order now from FIXT. The full album drops October 9, with the title track “Where Spirit Meets Bone” out today.
Dropping with the pre-order announcement is “Where Spirit Meets Bone.” The fierce single delves into the raw, visceral emotions of betrayal, cynicism, and the quest for liberation from a toxic relationship. The track is characterized by its intense lyrics that convey the suffocating experience of enduring repetitive deceit and emotional manipulation.
The final session from Coping Method is just around the corner. Intense. Brutal. Raw. The program delves into the darkest recesses of the human condition shining a light as it bombards listeners with a barrage of rock, metal, metalcore, Nu-metal, and alternative. Featuring an ensemble of genre-defying sessions including “Closing In” featuring the fierce vocal talents of the enigmatic REEBZ, “Underground” the utter embodiment of aggression, and the equally savage “Obliterate Me” with the band commenting simply, “It’s heavy” Where Spirit Meets Bone is a high octane ride through human resilience. Stay tuned. The next training session is just around the corner.
Where Spirit Meets Bone is a turbulent deep dive into the human psyche. Coping Method‘s Tyler Simpson’s brutal vocal performances are just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface is a deep well of transformative soundscapes laid out in vivid and painstaking detail. The album takes on themes of betrayal, cynicism, toxic relationships, inner demons, and self destructive tendencies through a musical lens as a deeply personal albeit chaotic release. Through thrashing guitars, layered into thunderous percussion, and electronic elements, laced with thought provoking lyrics that have to be screamed not just sung, Coping Method’s distinct ability to seamlessly weave these intricate emotions into their music is a testament to Coping Method’s musical prowess. If you’re looking for authenticity that mirrors the complexities of life’s challenges in the modern era, this is it.
The spirit of the album can be summed up with one quote from band member Jed Stark. “You are not alone; your struggles matter, and you deserve to receive help.”
Beneath the mystifying cloak of ambiguity lies vulnerability. Coping Method thrives in the shadows of the human psyche, exploring unfiltered rumination via their unique marriage of Metal and Dark EDM. Those who participate in their exercises, classified as “trainees,” are encouraged to lose themselves in each sonic wave. Underneath the brooding veneer of the organization is a yearning to connect with each trainee, providing an outlet for their struggles. Instructors Tyler Simpson (Vocals), Jed Stark (Guitar/Synth), and Chad Wunderle (Drums) believe in the message with every fiber of their being. By embracing the pulsating soundscapes and sonorous timbres, you too might believe.
“Where Spirit Meets Bone” is available now on all platforms from FiXT.
New England extreme metal powerhouse, Escuela Grind, will release their new LP, Dreams on Algorithms, on 18th October via MNRK Heavy (High on Fire, Zakk Wylde).
Recorded at Salem, Massachusetts’ GodCity studio with producer Kurt Ballou, and mastered by Nick Townsend (Dr. Dre, Betty Davis) the record is the highly anticipated follow-up to Escuela Grind‘s celebrated 2022 full-length debut, Memory Theater, a recording hailed as “an opus of extremity” by The New York Times.
Today, Escuela Grind release their new single ‘Concept of God’, directed by Seby X Martinez of Negative Kitty (Body Count, [adult swim]). Speaking on the track, the band say, “‘Concept of God’ is about the chaos that ensues when humans come together; the good and bad things that happen when opposites and like-minded individuals attract. The main lyrics in the song are, “the concept of god only exists because of people”. View Escuela Grind‘s “Concept of God” video here:
Speaking on the album title, Dreams on Algorithms, vocalist Katerina Economou says, “We wanted to write an album that identifies what it’s like to consume in this era we live in: what we receive through our phones, the social media landscape, and personalised algorithms, and how it is translated by our subconscious. I think most people can relate to something in their online sphere infecting their dreams. This transfer was something we really wanted to expand on, and all of the songs have themes relating to dream analysis and technology.”
Dreams on Algorithms was launch with the first single ‘Turbulence’, which showcased clean vocals over an earworm chorus – a first for Escuela Grind – without pulling away from unhinged brutality. Stream the ‘Turbulence’ video, directed by Michael Jari Davidson (Alice In Chains), at this location.
Striking cover art by AC Tremblay foreshadows the inherent power and thematic investment contained in Dreams on Algorithms. “We have collaborated with the incredible AC Tremblay once more to create this vision of Dreams on Algorithms, says the band. “We wanted a similar expression as our last album, but with a different colour palette. The art of Kurt Seligmann, Bauhaus theater sets, Nightmare on Elm Street, Eiko Ishioka, and the Cremaster Cycle were source materials of inspiration for this visual storytelling. The amount of detail and attention that AC Tremblay pays to his drawing is what we love most about working with him. You’ll be able to find many Easter eggs from the album’s lyrics within the artwork. We’re still finding new details.”
Unquestionably one of the hardest working bands in music today, Escuela Grind is currently in the midst of a two-month tour of Europe which includes a slew of high profile festival appearances.
The remaining show: August 16 Dinkelsbuhl, DE @Summer Breeze Festival

Set to be released on October 4 through Vendetta Records, the album marks a significant milestone for the band as they celebrate their tenth anniversary, inviting listeners to embark on a journey through time and emotion.

ASARHADDON‘s music serves as a poignant reminder of days long past, inviting a dance of majestic timbre and wailing poetry.
The album cover, adorned with the skulls of four birds, symbolizes the respective countries of origin of the four kings. This striking imagery was captured in a local forest that holds significant meaning for the band, reflecting their roots and the journey they have taken over the past decade.

In their grieving compositions, the collective envelops the listener in a meld of grand atmospheres and a ponderous sadness. Their instruments form choirs chanting mournful hymns, meandering through the gloom of arcane worlds forgotten by time. Accompanied by remarkably poetic calls, the two writers reveal a deep longing for secludedness in nature.
“Êra” by ASARHADDON will be available on October 4 via Vendetta Records. To catch a glimpse of the album’s atmosphere, check out the first teaser here:
