STARKS DAEMON Unleashes Debut EP “Unchain” + Video for ‘Too Deep’

Starks Daemon, one of Africa’s leading figures in the rock/metal scene, has just released his debut EP Unchain along with a gripping video for the track Too Deep. The EP, available online since March 3, 2024, quickly topped the African Metal charts, holding the number one spot for four weeks.

Hailing from Botswana, Starks Daemon has been the frontman of international metal band Wrust for over 23 years, sharing the stage with legends such as Sepultura, Carcass, and Entombed. Now, Starks is taking his career in a new direction, focusing on his solo brand and unleashing his creative vision on a global scale.

The EP’s inspiration comes from the profound events surrounding the pandemic, highlighting humanity’s vulnerabilities, and questioning the status quo. Starks explains, “The album encourages listeners to unchain their minds, question authority, and search for their own truths beyond institutional narratives.” His lyrics challenge societal norms, touching on themes from fear and manipulation to genetically modified food concerns.

The writing process began with Starks crafting guitar riffs and vocal melodies and jamming with the drummer to perfect the groove. His vision for the EP was to create anthemic, sing-along tracks that resonate in large venues. Recording the album was both challenging and rewarding, as Starks pushed himself beyond his growling vocal comfort zone, blending melodic screams with heavy guitar riffs.

Unchain is a testament to Starks’ evolution as an artist, featuring Leroy’s precise drumming, Menz’s refreshing bass lines, and Jimmy’s keen ear for engineering. Starks sums up the EP in five words: “This is badass music, period.”

Unchain is available now on all digital platforms including Spotify Apple Music and Deezer

The video for Too Deep complements the intense, emotive track, offering a visual journey through Starks’ themes of introspection and raw power.

THE MENDENHALL EXPERIMENT Release New Single “Say It”, Out Now

The Mendenhall Experiment is proud to announce the release of their latest single, “Say It.” This dynamic track was released on May 10th via Lucent/UMG, a division of Universal Music Group and marks the second release from their forthcoming EP, Chasing Ghosts.

Mendenhall talks about the single, “‘Say It’ was a different process for us, the song came together organically as a full band, with everyone throwing in their flavor on the fly. It was one of those ‘magic moments’ as a band where everything just flowed out of us and the song came together in an evening. It stands as one of our heaviest songs in the catalogue.”

Vocalist Alyce Hayes adds, “‘Say It’ is a song about speaking your truth, even when you’re scared, or when you feel unheard. It’s a personal mantra and reminder for myself, really. We can’t fully become who we’re meant to be until we can speak for ourselves. When the guys sent me the music, I was immediately inspired. I think I had the lyrics written in about 30 minutes. ‘Say It’ is asking the question: ‘What if I don’t stay silent? What if my words have power?’ Because they do. Words absolutely have power.”

“If you asked me why I want to be a rock star…it’s not about the fame or money,” guitarist/ songwriter Brandon Mendenhall states. “I have a unique opportunity to inspire people and kids with disabilities with my playing, my music and my story. I truly believe that’s what I was put on this earth to do.”

Born with Cerebral Palsy, an incurable neurological disorder affecting movement, coordination and, balance; Brandon Mendenhall faces numerous challenges. With limited movement on his left side and zero mobility in his left hand, the odds were stacked against him from birth.

However, inspired by acts such as Korn and Pantera, Brandon taught himself how to play guitar at the age of 19, rehabilitating his left hand without surgical intervention. “Once I was able to get a guitar in my hands, it changed my life,” he says. That passion for music sparked something in his soul and a dream began to form…a dream that was thought to be impossible: Brandon wanted to play guitar and form a band. He recalls, “My grandfather told me, ‘You’ll never be a guitarist. Don’t even try.’ And that crushed me. Those words lit a fire in me. I was determined that I could do this.”

The Mendenhall Experiment was born as Brandon’s own personal aspiration to be in a world-famous band while working within the limitations of Cerebral Palsy, knowing full well that the cards were stacked against finding musicians willing to work with him. Possessing a fierce desire to succeed, Brandon went to visit a friend in the Rock & Roll Mecca of Los Angeles- and never left, pursuing his dream with relentless tenacity and bulldog determination. Failure was not an option.

Formed in 2008, The Mendenhall Experiment also features bass player Nathan Stockton, who overcame a disability of his own-childhood deafness-through the power of music. He and Brandon are joined by Alyce Hayes on vocals, Mike Lira on guitar, and Justin Lubeck on drums.

Based in Southern California, TMX has been regularly performing on the infamous Sunset Strip in addition to gigs throughout the region opening for the likes of such metal mainstays as John 5, POD, Alien Ant Farm, Kill Devil Hill, Fear Factory, Prong, Flaw, Metal Allegiance, Smile Empty Soul, Cold, and more. In 2013, the five-piece performed at the Monster Energy Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California, sharing the stage with Korn, Megadeth, and Five Finger Death Punch.

A breakthrough occurred on June 17, 2014, when TMX made it to the final round of The Battle of the Bands for Warped Tour. After an electrifying performance that left the audience screaming for more, The Mendenhall Experiment took second place. The subsequent buzz reached the discerning ears at Liquid Bit Music Productions and in August 2014 TMX inked a publishing deal with the company, six years to the day after the initial incarnation of The Mendenhall Experiment performed its first show in Brandon’s hometown of Kankakee, Illinois. Shortly thereafter, the quintet put pen to paper again to sign their first development deal with Lucent Records, including national digital distribution through Universal Music Group.

TMX’s inspiring and energetic performances strive to bring a positive message to the masses. They stand strong for disability awareness in support of Brandon, who observes, “At our shows, we are starting to see the impact of our mission to inspire others on a consistent basis. Our fans and supporters come to us and give their personal testimonies and praise about how we are touching their lives, and the lives of others with disabilities.” The music and lyrics resonate far beyond the disabilities, inspiring people to seize every day and celebrate life.

The Mendenhall Experiment began recording their current EP in various studios in Los Angeles with the help of some very special guests: James “Munky” Shaffer (Korn) and Danny Lohner (NIN/A Perfect Circle). The EP is available everywhere online and the debut single, “Seize the Day”, has received over thirty-thousand views on Vevo/YouTube.

The music video was acclaimed Video of the Year at the 2015 LRT Music Video Awards in Hollywood, California, celebrating independent music, while Brandon was deemed Trailblazer of the Year at the 2015 United Cerebral Palsy Los Angeles Art of Care annual event. In addition, he was also named celebrity ambassador for Day Trippers, a UK-based charity assisting disabled people in Great Britain. A feature documentary film detailing Brandon and the band’s story, Mind Over Matter, was released in 2019; directed by French filmmaker Sébastien Paquet (Korn,Wounded Warriors). In 2016 TMX made a triumphant return to the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California, graduating to the main stage and playing to over four-thousand wildly enthusiastic fans. TMX has also performed at the 2017 Rocklahoma festival. In 2019 they released the singles “Unwanted” and a surprise acoustic version of “Nothing Good Came Easy” to much acclaim from fans.

On November 11th, 2022 their second EP Against All Odds was launched with its hit single “Pulse of The Lost” featuring Chris Garza from Suicide Silence. Within the first eight minutes of its release on Spotify it amassed over one hundred and thirty thousand streams. After the successful launch of their EP, TMX received an award from Daniel’s Music Foundation in recognition of their continuing efforts to raise disability awareness in the music industry and performed to a sold-out audience at the award ceremony which took place at the Symphony Space Performing Arts Center on Broadway in New York City. The Mendenhall Experiment is currently sponsored by Monster Energy, Ibanez Guitars, EMG Pickups, SIT Strings, EVH Amplifiers, Evertune Bridges, and InTune Guitar Picks.

Brandon maintains a vision for TMX that some may deem unrealistic: “I am confident that as The Mendenhall Experiment brand continues to grow and see greater success, we can begin to inspire people on a global scale with our music, touching not only the lives of individuals but also changing the global perception of people with disabilities.” But considering all that he’s overcome thus far, it would be difficult to bet against Brandon and “The Experiment” that bears his name fulfilling those goals!

The Mendenhall Experiment is:
Brandon Mendenhall – Rhythm Guitarist
Alyce Hayes – Vocalist
Mike Lira – Lead Guitarist
Nathan Stockton – Bassist
Justin Luebeck – Percussionist

DIRKSCHNEIDER to Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Iconic “Balls To The Wall” Album with Extensive European Tour

Posted by tarjavirmakari on May 13, 2024
Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: DIRKSCHNEIDER. Leave a comment

Much-recognised German heavy metal act U.D.O. just completed a European run in support of their current hit album “Touchdown” (released on August 25, 2023), which was greatly crowded in many places and even saw the band perform at a number of sold out venues. While enjoying the well deserved laurels, the group are now preparing for this year’s festival season as well as the North American leg of their current world tour. Two of the aforementioned summer dates will actually revive the name DIRKSCHNEIDER.

DIRKSCHNEIDER is a name that stands for far more than a simple second incarnation of U.D.O., the band with Udo Dirkschneider. In this form, the quintet pay tribute to the musical history of their legendary singer. As songwriter and even founder in the ’70s, Udo was one of the main characters of the ACCEPT success story. Bass player Peter Baltes, the newest member of the U.D.O. / DIRKSCHNEIDER family, also contributed a lot to ACCEPT‘s scene defining works, and during their common time in Udo‘s band, a certain album titled “Balls To The Wall” came to be.

“Balls To The Wall” would be a fitting description for the stage presence of the band, which is completed by the drumming ‘clockwork’ of Sven Dirkschneider and a talented guitar duo built of Andrey Smirnov and Fabian “Dee” Dammers, too. What luck that the 40th anniversary of the mentioned studio album, which was originally released in late 1983 and which is the most sold and best known by ACCEPT, recently fell into the current U.D.O. / DIRKSCHNEIDER heyday. Of course the band don’t want to leave this jubilee unnoticed: that’s why DIRKSCHNEIDER are pleased to not only announce a full “Balls To The Wall” live performance but AN ENTIRE TOUR in belated celebration of the iconic album for spring 2025!

Udo looks forward to these prestigious dates: “I really can’t wait to revisit the ultimate success album of my band ACCEPT. Topped by sharing the stage with Peter Baltes, performing “Balls To The Wall” in full for all of you out there will be one of my biggest career highlights for sure!”

As if 45 minutes of “Balls To The Wall” — delivering cult tracks such as its title track, ‘London Leatherboys,’‘Love Child,’ or album closing ballad ‘Winterdreams’ — aren’t enough to celebrate, DIRKSCHNEIDER will also add additional musical surprises to the set list and even return with a fresh stage production. Everything is set to commemorate the 40th anniversary of this undeniable ACCEPT milestone and to ensure that these nights will be unforgettable celebrations for every metalhead.

Tickets for the German shows are exclusively available at eventim now; the general pre-sale for all 25 dates is set to be launched on Wednesday, May 15 @ 12PM CEST.

KERRY KING’s First Solo Album “From Hell I Rise” Out May 17th

Slayer’s final gig was on November 30, 2019, in the band’s Los Angeles hometown. But the night marked a new beginning for iconic Slayer songwriter/guitarist Kerry King. The band co-founder wasn’t nearly finished; he had much more brutal and provocative music brewing, stages to dominate, heads to roll. King’s sound and vision manifest in the 13 songs on From Hell I Rise, the first solo outing in King’s four decades of slaying the metal universe. His particular brand of blunt power, incisive lyrical themes, and aural assault are finally unleashed on May 17, 2024.

The arrival of one of the most anticipated albums of 2024–and one of the most eagerly awaited metal records ever—finds King beyond stoked. “It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had. There will be some faces punched in,” he says. The guitarist quickly addresses the most-asked question: “I think people are going to compare it to Slayer. I’m not afraid of that because I think it stands up to anything we’ve done in our history, musically, performance-wise.” That said, “There will be people complaining, ‘Why does it sound like Slayer?’ And ‘why doesn’t it sound more like Slayer? That’s just what people do.”

Joining the King crusade is a lineup that began with Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph. “Paul’s kind of like my [Vinny] Appice to Ronnie James Dio,” King says. “I knew Paul wanted to be part of this since 2018. My initial plan was to bring [Gary] Holt, but then I thought I probably shouldn’t have any more Slayer pieces, so that went Phil Demmel’s way.” The band is completed by bassist Kyle Sanders (Hellyeah), and in the much-talked-about vocalist spot, Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), a friend of King’s since the early ‘80s Cali thrash days. The lineup kills.

From the instrumental entrée “Diablo” into the relentless, repentless “Where I Reign,” to the last cut, the statement-making, full-circle title track “From Hell I Rise,” King and co. are in full control. Music and lyrics are very intentional, with song topics including war, women’s rights, current American politics…and one-tune inspired by The Scorpions and Halloween-style riffs. (“That one, ‘Shrapnel,’ was something super-indulgent for me, and it came out really cool,” he says.)

King was creatively satisfied in Slayer, had no itch to go solo, nor was he dying to try genre-switching BS. But he very much felt the band he helped found called it quits way too soon, which is why From Hell I Rise sounds like it does, proudly not unlike Slayer. “I was writing most of the music anyway, especially at the end. Things I wrote during Slayer’s lifespan are showing up on From Hell I Rise, which you’ll see later, on the next record.”

King initially worked up “From Hell I Rise” during the Repentless writing era. “When I was working on ‘Where I Reign,’ it was funny because I was like, ‘From hell I will rise!’ But then I thought, ‘Well, I can’t use that; I’ve already got ‘From Hell I Rise.’  Then I figured, ‘What if one’s the intro, then you’re foretelling the future, which is the end song of the album?’ I liked that idea. I’ve never done anything like that before,” says King. “So that’s how that is. The first one goes “From Hell I Will Rise,” and the last one says “From Hell I Rise.” It’s actually happening. I love that in my twisted mind.

“Lyrically, I did “Residue” and “Toxic” when I had COVID, and I was stuck in my hotel room,” King explains. “It was when Roe v. Wade got shot down. I was just really pissed off.  And ‘Residue’ talks about “mental retrograde,” the silly things in politics in the last eight years, and all the nonsense going on in America. We used to be a lot more united than we are now.”

King’s also not averse to putting a few not-so-hidden Slayer Easter eggs on From Hell I Rise: “Lyrics dabble in my past because you got rain/reign. People will always put rain with me,” King says. South of heaven imagery—devilish, that is—may also be present. The song “Idle Hands” premiered via Rolling Stone, who raved about the “explosive, skull-rattling riff… Singer Mark Osegueda (Death Angel) narrates the return of King — “So begins my revolution/Violence spreads my retribution … ‘Till the end, idle hands do the Devil’s work.”

Osegueda is the first new vocalist King’s been in a band with for 40 years, and his voice is well-known and revered. “I think a lot of people — namely industry types — were worried about him sounding too much like Death Angel,” King says. Those concerns proved moot. “I knew what we had; he and I worked really well together.”

Yet Osegueda’s singing was so powerful and unique that King was momentarily uneasy: “By the second song Mark finished singing, I went into the studio and asked him, ‘Is this sustainable? Because I’ve never heard you sing like this. I want to make sure you’re not blowing your load in the studio and can’t reproduce this live.’ Mark said, ‘I can totally do it.’ So I asked him again in about an hour. And again, in another hour. Then I figured, ‘alright, I guess he means it.’”

Producer Josh Wilbur (Korn, Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, Bad Religion), who tracked From Hell I Rise at Hollywood’s famous Henson Studios in a little over two weeks, concurs. “Mark sounds like a fucking demon.” As for his first time working with King? The producer found the guitarist assertive and driven but easy to work with. “Kerry never comes off as a jerk or mean guy. But he knows exactly what he wants,” Wilbur says. “He’s very direct, but it comes from a place of confidence, not from a place of ego or anything else.”

Though the pandemic halted King’s plans to write and release an album quickly, the process was relatively streamlined, even though King moved with his wife from SoCal to Las Vegas to New York during that time. But Ron Sandoval at Rev it Up Studios–who has “been there since day one” –had a lockout rehearsal space ready for whenever King and Bostaph wanted to work together. King traveled frequently to LA and rehearsed and worked up songs with Bostaph. The frequent but spaced-out studio time allowed the songs to breathe and progress. ProTools was always running, so every idea and rehearsal was captured, allowing the duo to maintain momentum.

King authored all the lyrics, mainly for logistical reasons: “I finished everything before Mark knew he had the gig. But that’s not to say he will or won’t write on record two,” says King. Circumstances dictated that King sing on all From Hell I Rise demos. “I did scratch vocals on everything,” King says, adding, “I’m not a singer. I’m a guitar player. I’ve got conviction when I sing, but I have no range, and I need some distortion to help me out a little bit. There was always, ‘I got this if whatever we’re looking for doesn’t work.’ Luckily, we didn’t have to go that route.”

Oseguda was the only vocalist who tried out. “I would send him lyrics along the way, just to bounce them off my friend.” Then it escalated. “I said, ‘Why don’t you come in here, listen to my demos, and put ‘Mark vocals’ on them?’” King said. “Whenever he was in between tours, I’d say, ‘Hey, you want to come make these better? You wanna try these new ones?’ And we recorded. Paul did his stuff. Phil tracked all his leads; Kyle did all the bass. So, everybody knew how everything went, where the vocals and leads were, all before recording the album. That’s the first time in my life I’ve known that and done that.”

The fully realized process was a revelation for King. “It’s wonderful knowing where everything goes. I hear it all in my head, but I think the one who benefits the most is Paul, because he could actually hear the vocals. I think it’s probably the most luxurious time Paul has had with me, just knowing, not guessing, ‘Is this roll going to work?’”

So far, everything is working: Festival dates are booked; shows are set through Fall 2024, with more being confirmed daily. King and company are ready to deliver. For an hour-long set list, the guitarist imagines a mix of From Hell I Rise material and Slayer songs. “I’ve always planned on doing Slayer stuff, concentrating on the songs I did or had a part in doing,” he says. “I think in the beginning, we’ll be playing three, four or five Slayer songs.”

King’s got, freedom, boundless creativity and the band to make it happen. Rightfully proud of his Slayer history, King’s unafraid to both mine it and to simultaneously move forward. For instance, in the ultra-punk ‘80s-vibe song “Two Fists,” lyrics include, “this fuckin’ ship’s about to sink / I think I need another drink.” “It’s not a stretch for me for people to see that I wrote that,” concludes King. “But it’s got punky type phrasing that might not be present in a Slayer song, and I never would have written ‘I think I need another drink,’ in a Slayer song, even though it has every right to be there.” Kerry F’n King, circa 2024, still mincing no words: “From Hell / Through fire I will rise / Until blood rains from the skies.”

PATRIARCHS IN BLACK Release New Single + Video ‘What Do They Know? (For The Champions)’

PATRIARCHS IN BLACK release “What Do They Know? (For The Champions)”, the first single from the upcoming studio album “Visioning” (Metalville Records – release date July 19th).

Dan Lorenzo about the song: ” I hope everybody loves this song as much as wedo. I wrote the music and Mark Sunshine wrote the lyrics and Melody. When I wrote the music, I wrote the verse and the chorus simultaneously and I knew I needed a third part for the song. So what I do is I play along with the click track and I just do what comes naturally. The third part of the song was so simplistic and I wondered why I wrote something that wouldn’t be that interesting. Then I decided to try some harmonies and add those to the notes, and I feel like I came up with something that I’ve never done before. Multiple Guitar harmonies. Of course Johnny Kelly is on drums and on bass guitar is Iron Lou who is really big in the Maryland doom scene.
Lou has been a really big Hades and non-fiction fan for many years and he told me he can now die a happy man after playing on one of my songs. Sunshine did his usual incredible original lyrics and Melody line and I’m so happy with this.

Former Type O Negative/ Danzig drummer Johnny Kelly and guitarist riff writer Dan Lorenzo (Hades / Non-Fiction) formed Patriarchs In Black at the end of 2021. The project included well known guests on vocals and bass including Karl Agell ( COC Blind/Lie Heavy) , Jimmy Gnecco, Dewey Bragg ( Kill Devil Hill/Bill Ward) among others. Their debut single “Demon of Regret” came out January 2022 and the full album “Reach For The Scars” was released July 1st 2022. Their 2nd album “My Veneration” was October 6th 2023 with multiple guest vocalists and bassists.

For the forthcoming 3rd studio album “Visioning” Dan Lorenzo has already written twelve new songs. Beside drummer Johnny Kelly it features again a bunch of great singers and bass players, like Dave Neabore (Dog Eat Dog), Karl Agell (Corrosion Of Confirmity), Eric Morgan (A Pale Horse Named Death), Mark Sunshine (Riotgod), Jason McMaster (Watchtower), Kyle Thomas (Exhorder) and many more.

The songs on “Visioning” combine elements of classic doom metal with modern sounds as well as excursions into hardcore/crossover.

The album was mixed and mastered at JROD Productions by Jon Cioicari.

“It’s SO fun and not putting too much pressure on singers to come up with one or two amazing lyrics and melodies a year. I write a LOT of riffs/music.Our third album came together very easily. FUN FUN FUN” says Dan.
