Operatic black metal rising stars FOLTERKAMMER are now unveiling an in-studio performance video for their brand new song, “Algolagnia!” The clip showcases the searing and remarkable talents of each member, while also giving a glimpse of guitarist Zac Ezrin’s (IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT) versatility as a guitarist as he displays his chops with some straight-forward black metal riffing! The clip was once again created by Folterkammer drummer Brendan McGowan and can be found at THIS LOCATION.

The song is taken from the band’s sophomore full-length, ‘Weibermacht,’ which is due on April 19, 2024 via Century Media Records!

Guitarist Zachary Ezrin comments, “Algolagnia is a special song because it’s the first and only song that we wrote together in the studio. It’s a really raw and brutal piece that I’m very proud of.”

Bassist Laurent David adds, “Finally, a black metal track that starts with a bassline!”

Vocalist Andromeda Anarchia further explains, “Musically, I would say that despite all its rawness, this piece also has a somewhat modern character. It is very unusual. This contrasts with the more traditional, dramatic-romantic operatic singing that floats over the raw music at certain points. My main inspirations for interpreting Algolagnia as a singer were Rob Halford, Nina Hagen, Nova Twins, and Joan Sutherland.

“When it comes to lyrics, one of the main inspirations for ‘Algolagnia’ was the opera ELEKTRA by Richard Strauss, which is one of my all-time favorite operas. It portrays strong women with strong voices, and that’s exactly what I want for our music. For Algolagnia, I paraphrase a passage of the aria: ‘Wie stark bist du!’ (‘How strong you are!’). (A personal note: This opera is so bloody and brutal, a must-see for all metal fans who want to venture into the world of opera. It’s heavy! You shouldn’t expect overly romantic melodies and sweet voices in this opera; it is written for women with strong voices from the so-called dramatic vocal fach. It’s incredibly demanding to sing! Badass!)

“In addition, I also paraphrase a passage from a spicy comic-mythological operetta called ‘DIE SCHÖNE GALATHEE’ (‘The Beautiful Galatea’) by the Austrian composer Franz von Suppé. The operetta is about the beautiful nymph Galathee, who, to Pygmalion’s dismay, turns out to be a very capricious lady. This theme also plays wonderfully into our hands when it comes to the concept of ‘Weibermacht’ (the term that refers to an art and cultural-historical motif that describes the triumph of erotic, cunning and/or brutal women over powerful, strong, and wise men).

“‘Algolagnia,’ from Greek /ælɡəˈlæɡniə/: ἄλγος, álgos, ‘pain,’ λαγνεία, lagneía, ‘pleasure.’ Lyrically, as the song title suggests, it is about the phenomenon of sexual pleasure and stimulation through physical pain. The woman depicted in the song is the source of pleasurable pain, described as a kind of sun, warming, life-giving and sustaining, but also dangerous, life-threatening hot if you get too close to her. The descriptions are based on the legend of Icarus and the sun.”

‘Weibermacht’ serves as a counterpart to the band’s 2020 debut, ‘Die Lederpredigt.’ The new record is another searing blend of modern black metal and classical music elements, lending to its Avant Garde sound. The music itself is elevated by frontwoman and vocalist Andromeda Anarchia’s dynamic vocal work as she juxtaposes her classical training as an opera singer with her hellfire screams, summoning a maelstrom of ethereal chaos. Pre-orders are now live HERE.

In addition, FOLTERKAMMER has recently announced their first ever U.S. tour! The rising powerhouse will be embarking on an East Coast headliner with support from WITCHING, which kicks off on March 22 in Baltimore and will circle back to the band’s hometown of Brooklyn, NY on March 30. The full itinerary can be found below!

The album artwork for ‘Weibermacht’ was created by Eliran Kantor.

Founded in New York around 2018/2019, Folterkammer, or “Torture Chamber,” is the operatic black metal outfit that is redefining modern music. This ingenious band seamlessly fuses beauty with brutality. A combination of raw passion and technique contributes to the epic nature of Folterkammer’s dark art. Their work is both nostalgic and remarkably fresh. Yes, Folterkammer fuses various musical traditions and genres to craft an unparalleled experience.

Folterkammer is composed of Andromeda Anarchia on vocals, Zachary Ezrin on guitars, Darren Hanson on guitars, Laurent David on bass, and Brendan McGowan on drums. Both Anarchia, who hails from Switzerland, and David, who was born in Paris, divide their time between Europe and Brooklyn. Thus, even though the group can be described as international, Anarchia states: “It took New York to create Folterkammer.” Her project Andromeda Anarchia’s DARKMATTERS acted as the catalyst that brought her to the Big Apple, where she met Ezrin. Many metalheads already know that Anarchia has appeared as a guest on the three most recent albums by Ezrin’s brainchild Imperial Triumphant — a leading avant-garde band that marries extreme metal, jazz, classical components, etc. McGowan has also provided guest vocals for Imperial Triumphant, and Hanson lent his songwriting excellence to their 2012 instrumental track “Scaphism.”

Ezrin, McGowan, and Hanson have a wealth of shared history. These friends attended college together in California, where Hanson and Ezrin studied classical composition. Thus, much of Folterkammer’s orchestration is classically based. Hanson harbors a special love of Baroque music and knows precisely how to expertly wed it with his passion for black metal. Folterkammer was actually conceived when Ezrin proposed that Anarchia collaborate with him on some of Hanson’s material. Ezrin writes killer riffs and more for the band. McGowan was invited to join Folterkammer on Hanson’s wise suggestion. His drums are perhaps the heaviest element keeping one of Folterkammer’s limbs firmly anchored in traditional black metal. McGowan mines inspiration from different generations of acts: He names 1349 and old-school heroes like Blasphemy and Marduk. That said, black metal fans will also be pleased to hear the spirit of the second wave in the aggression of Folterkammer’s tremolo picking, for example.

The exceptionally skilled David, Folterkammer’s newest weapon, truly perfects the group with his golden touch on bass. Whereas the bass is not always as prominent as it could be in the content of many black metal groups, Folterkammer purposely allows David’s bass to shine through. Like his bandmates, David is an avid consumer of several forms of music, and thus creates delightfully eclectic art. He has received both classical and jazz training. This major talent has toured worldwide alongside musicians and bands such as Ibrahim Maalouf, Guillaume Perret & The Electric Epic, Yael Naim, and Shijin. David has done so both as a side man and as a band leader/producer. Anarchia and Ezrin already knew David before asking him to join Folterkammer. After all, David founded the “avant metal-jazz trio” Kilter of which Imperial Triumphant’s Kenny Grohowski is an essential part.

Bay Area metal legends FORBIDDEN announce their first annual OmegAfest on May 4, 2024 at The UC Theatre in Berkeley, CA. When Forbidden was reborn last year things got off to a raucous start. One of the first things the band wanted to do is to be able to control their own flow. Choose where, when and what they play.

Thats why they created our own festival…OmegAfest!

OmegAfest 2024 Lineup:
May 4, 2024 – The UC Theatre, Berkeley, CA
Biohazard
Forbidden
Warbringer
Exciter
Hatriot
Bewitcher
Death Grave
Frolic
Hellbender

Tickets for OmegAfest are availalbe at: https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/95832592/omega-festbiohazard-forbidden-berkeley-the-uc-theatre

This will be the first of hopefully many more European-like festivals that the band will throw annually at the UC Theater in Berkeley. An amazing venue with a 1,400 capacity, excellent sound, stage & lights.

The idea is they get to hand pick the bands they play with every year covering multiple genres of heavy music. This year they have BIOHAZARD co-headlining with FORBIDDEN. BIOHAZARD’s first gig back in the Bay in 30 years!

Each year moving forward the band will select national acts as well as a few strong up and coming local bands. A genre blend creating a more European style of eclectic talent.

OmegAfest will be FORBIDDEN’s ONLY Bay Area appearance of 2024.

About Forbidden

Originally founded in 1985 as Forbidden Evil by singer Russ Anderson, guitarists Craig Locicero & Robb Flynn, basses John Tegio and drummer Jim Pittman, the quintet started playing house parties and Bay Area clubs such as the Legendary Ruthie’s Inn soon after.

After a couple of lineup changes (Paul Bostaph / drums & Matt Camacho / bass) in ’86, the band quickly rose through the ranks of Bay Area Thrash to gain a massive following and worldwide notoriety.

In 1986, the band added Glen Alvelais as the second guitarist. It was this lineup that cemented itself into the Bay Area scene and soon after recorded 1988 release ‘Forbidden Evil’ for Combat Records changing the band’s name to simply Forbidden.

In May of ’89 while on a European tour with Sacred Reich, Forbidden played their first appearance at the Legendary Dynamo Open Air in Eindhoven, Netherlands. It was here that Forbidden made their European mark and recorded the Raw Evil EP.

The band returned Stateside and replaced Alvelais with Tim Calvert. Calvert was a missing ingredient that brought the band closer together asa team. They continued to tour the U.S. first with Exodus and then again with Sacred Reich with Calvert on second guitar.

The band went on to release Twisted Into Form in 1990, Distortion in 1994 and Green in 1996 however the band having gone though many lineup changes disbanded in 1997.

In 2008 Craig being inspired at a screening of the movie Get Thrashed, called the other members of the band and suggested getting back on stage to see if they could reignite the Forbidden machine. With Anderson, Locicero, Camacho back in the mix along with new additions Glen Alvelais and Gene Hoglan they played two sold out Death Angel shows in San Francisco.

Steve Smyth came into the mix in place of Alvelais and Mark Hernandez took Hoglan’s place, the band then released Omega Wave, the 5th in the catalog and went on a US tour with Overkill. European festivals were next but afterwards Hernandez had to walk away due to personal reasons leading to a tour cancelation.

Sasha Horn was the answer to fill the drummer’s spot.

After playing Bonded By Baloff with Exodus and one Bay Area show, Forbidden embarked for Chile to play the Metal Fest in Santiago. It was on this flight back home that Russ informed the band that he couldn’t tour anymore because of the physical toll it was taking on him. With that, the band dissolved once again for 11 years.

Fast forward to 2023. The once improbable and impossible happened. Forbidden is reforming with new blood! Locicero, Camacho & Smyth remain from the Omega Wave lineup.

New vocalist Norman Skinner will take the elite position that belonged to Russ Anderson. Norman shocked everyone who witnessed his performance of Chalice of Blood with LA thrashers Warbringer accompanying him as the band. It was undeniable to all in attendance. Norman grew up in the Bay Area. His first thrash metal show was seeing Forbidden at the Omni. Russ would point to Norman at shows and call him
“Little Russ” on the mic. It could ONLY be Norman Skinner that stands aside the band.

The Bay Area thrash / punk drum Legend Chris Kontos takes over the drum throne. In a long line of world renown drummers, Kontos is the most logical & qualified man for the job. Bostaph, Jacobs, Hoglan, Hernandez, Horn… World class talents. Now Kontos.

The pirates of VISIONS OF ATLANTIS are about to take listeners on their heaviest symphonic adventure yet with their new studio album, entitled PIRATES II – ARMADA, set for release on July 5, 2024 via Napalm Records. The new successor to their high-charting previous release, Pirates (2022), is set as high as the waves cresting the Jolly Roger – taking everything that has been achieved to date to another level. With the second chapter of the pirates’ saga, VISIONS OF ATLANTIS prove that they are more than ready to claim the crown of symphonic metal.

Today, the crew centred around pirate queen Clèmentine Delauney and brave captain Michele Guaitoli unveil their first single and title track, “Armada”, together with an official music video that draws the listeners into the exciting universe of VISIONS OF ATLANTIS. With this track, the band pushes its metal attitude farther than ever before! The track immediately show how driving, rich, and banging the hymn of a pirate army could be.

Ship’s log:
July 5, 2024; High Seas

A new day of sailing begins, the wind on our side, and the sea speaks of recent battles. The air feels fresh – Hypocrisy, greed, envy – hearts of the old world finally disclose their deluded truth. Old leaders are losing ground, their lies are getting worse, and darkness creeps in. Each sunny day hides a coming storm, nature testing our strength for the last battle.

We’ve become pirates as their counterparts, free-spirited and true at heart. Navigating storms that try to make us doubt, we see the light in the darkness. The old truth is fading, making room for a new story. Our destiny is in our hands, in our hearts, in every step we take. Reconnecting with ourselves, we touch the essence of life we share with all creatures. Together, unstoppable, connected to the truth, guided by the sun and storms.

We’ll rule the oceans, the mainland, every street, every house, spreading hope. Our pirate cries will last for centuries, with ancestors humming our tunes, our words sung in the new world we create. Our glory will live on forever. United as one force, one army, under a final ARMADA.”

Pre-Order “PIRATES II – ARMADA” HERE

Emotions, depth, richness of sound. Not only a record, but a true hurricane of feelings is what VISIONS OF ATLANTIS delivers with the new album, PIRATES II – ARMADA. On a journey in which listeners face their own battles and cannot resist joining the “Armada”, VISIONS OF ATLANTIS will have listeners facing the “Monsters” inside them, with catchy melodies destined to endlessly stick in their mind. The uplifting “Tonight I’m Alive” surprises and captivates with the rhythms of a pirate party on the eve of combat, with the electrifying rumble of a hurricane – a unique, uncharted showcase of talent from VISIONS OF ATLANTIS. The burning flames of “Hellfire” enchant the listener before the sweetness of delicate melodies accompany them “Underwater”. The cinematic adventure of 7-minute-plus masterpiece “The Dead of the Sea” conjures the salty scent of the sea, making the listener feel – in every melodic twist and theatrical orchestral hit – the cannons firing and the battle raging. Listeners will shed a tear while mourning under the melody of “Ashes to the Sea”.

ANCIENT SETTLERS have released a video for “Wounded Heart”, first single taken from the new album “Oblivion’s Legacy” to be released on May 17th by Scarlet Records. PRE-SAVE/PRE-ORDER

“Wounded Heart” evokes a visceral journey through the tumultuous currents of existence, where time’s relentless march leaves shattered dreams and non-stop haste in its wake. A song to remember that each scar becomes a badge of resilience amidst the ashes of adversity, as the wounded heart remains steadfast in the face of hopelessness and isolation, enduring the toll that time exacts on soul.

“Oblivion’s Legacy” will be released in the following formats:

  • jewel case CD
  • vinyl LP
  • digital
  • Produced, mixed and mastered by Fredrick Nordstrom at Studio Fredman;
  • Illustrated by Jon Toussas (Suicidal Angels, Nightrage, W.E.B.);

artwork by Jon Toussas

Ancient Settlers quickly gained a fierce reputation in the melodic death metal European scene thanks to a relentless live activity, and are now eager to raise the bar with their second studio album.

Guided by the demoniac vocals of frontwoman Argen Death, the Venezuelan/Spanish band masters the melodeath subject with absolute confidence through storming heavy riffs, thick grooves and catchy hooks (just like the Swedish godfathers taught us all).

“Oblivion’s Legacy” is a conceptual work that delves into the profound depths of human existence, exploring the legacy we leave behind as individuals and as a species. The lyrics contemplate the impact of our actions, the struggles we face, and the ultimate fate that awaits us all.

Set against a backdrop of cosmic wonder and existential introspection, each song serves as a chapter in the unfolding narrative of humanity’s journey through time and space.

Live Report: JASMINE CAIN’s Album “Attitude is Everything” Release Party in Nashville

Live report and photos by Erik Hernandez

Jasmine Cain arrived in Nashville via Sturgis, South Dakota in 2003. Raised in a country lifestyle amidst bike culture, she remains true to her roots, playing the bike circuit. She delivers her vision doused in Rock n Roll! She and her band blend hard and heavy rock with metal, and pop elements, creating a sound all her own. She has won more than 30 music awards and recently released her 8 th studio record titled Attitude is Everything.

On March 16th, I went to Jasmine Cain’s album release party just outside of Nashville, at a little bar called Shooters. In true Jasmine Cain fashion, bikers and regular patrons alike were present to show support for their hometown heroine.

As soon as Jasmine took the stage, she honored her fallen friends by having the crowd toast in their honor, showing that not only is she a badass onstage, but also within her soul, the crowd obliged.

She incorporated many songs from her discography, including Nightingale, Highway Prophet, and Be Brave. Every song was getting the same reaction from the crowd, they wanted MORE!

Jasmine and her band also performed the entire new album and from front to back, it was nothing less than spectacular! The title track from her newest record, Attitude is Everything, was a personal favorite of mine for the night. Jasmine’s music is so multi layered that it’s impossible to put her into any sub-genre, simply meaning that when you go to her show, be ready for kick ass Rock n Roll from someone who has earned her place among the very best out there.

Head Bitch in Charge, also off her new record had the crowd screaming for more and then, in pure Jasmine Cain style, she pulls out a Pantera cover of Cowboys from Hell! It isn’t easy to pull that off, and sound great, but then, everybody isn’t jasmine Cain! I let her know after the show that her version rivals that of Pantera’s, her reply…Nobody is as good as Pantera!

The show was amazing, the band was amazing, and the house was full for Jasmine’s home show. A true testimony that her style and sound has reached the hearts of so many. Catch Jasmine on tour this year. For dates, merch, and news, go to http://www.jasminecain.com

Remember, keep your nose clean, and your circle lean,
Erik

Ukraine’s Premier Death Metallers HELL:ON to Release Seventh Full-Length Album “Shaman” on May 17th

HELL:ON, Ukraine’s leading Atmospheric Death Metal band, announces the highly anticipated release of their seventh full-length album, ‘Shaman,’ scheduled for May 17th, 2024, via Archivist Records.

“This album had to be released two years ago, but a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by russia has put our entire life on hold. Nowadays, due to our Armed Forces, we try to go on living and creating. I am sure that the spirit of this struggle was reflected in this work. It is hidden somewhere among the strings of the guitars, in the echoes of shamanic tribal vocals and flashes of ritual fires.” – says the band

Musically HELL:ON continuing the same line as the previous. Same Atmospheric death metal with tribal and oriental elements. Just more tribal percussions, throat singing and acoustic instruments this time.

Album tracklisting and cover art are as follows:
1) What Steppes Dream About
2) When The Wild Wind and The Soul of Fire Meet
3) Tearing Winds of Innerself
4) Preparation for the Ritual
5) He with the Horse’s Head
6) A New Dawn
7) I Am the Path
8) Shaman

Hell:on was formed in early 2005 in Zaporizhzhia, Eastern Ukraine. Hell:on plays death metal with oriental and tribal elements.
