RIFFORIA Release New Single + Video ‘CC Cowboys’

RIFFORIA have released “CC Cowboys”, the first single taken from the  new studio album “Axeorcism” (street date 23.02 2024 –  Metalville Records).

“CC Cowboys”tells the story of the Cold War between the superpowers USA and the Soviet Union. With its driving drums and cutting guitars, the song creates a dark mood that impressively reflects the fear of a global catastrophe. The story is carried by the voice of exceptional singer Nils Patrik Johansson (Astral Doors, Lion’s Share, ex Civil War). This is what modern Metal should sound like.

TUCK FROM HELL did a sensational album debut 12 years ago with “Thrashing”. The band was already a celebrated live act so the road to glory was there.

However, destiny had other plans and the band was put to rest. Almost.

Drummer and band leader Fredrik Johansson and guitar players Petrus Granar and Marcus Bengts continued to write music.

When Petrus Granar was invited join to the band Civil War, featuring Fredriks father Nils Patrik Johansson on vocals, the band turned into a duo.

“It felt really strange to sit on a bunch of kick ass thrash songs without doing anything with them. Our singer Niclas Ingels had no time to focus on music due to his family situation so what to do? From out of nowhere my dad, Nils Patrik, said: what the hell, I can sing for you. Let’s make a full album.

I was a bit sceptic at first since he’s a pure heavy metal singer but then I realized that in the beginning most thrash bands had “real” heavy metal vocals not growl.

The rest is, or will be history. We changed name to Rifforia, started the recordings, had a lot of fun and with mixing genius Martin Haglund in charge everything went smooth. Petrus Granar also came back to play some guitar on the album. He was a lot of help.” (Fredrik Johansson)

“Axeorcism” delivers ten statements of real strong, modern Heavy Metal and is going to continue the successful story of Swedish Hard and Heavy releases on Metalville Records.

THE OBSESSED Release New Single ‘Realize A Dream’ + Announce US Tour

US doom metal giants THE OBSESSED release their new single “Realize A Dream” taken from their anticipated fifth studio album “Gilded Sorrow”, to be released this February 16th through Ripple Music. The band will be touring the United States extensively this spring in support of the new release.

Says frontman Scott “Wino” Weinrich about the song: “This track is an example of how amazing the universe is: I wrote this track while still in high school. Later, I showed it to Dale Flood, who asked to record it on the Unorthodox’s “Asylum” album engineered by Frank Marchand. Fast forward to The Obsessed’s “Sacred” sessions with Frank. Out of the blue, he said that we should cover this Unorthodox song. I replied, “Realize A Dream?” He said, “Yeah, how did you know?”. “Because I wrote it!”. This song is about destiny, questions on existence, and a human’s quest for answers related to life. It’s a real old song, but still relevant in my opinion.”

Listen here to The Obsessed’s new single “Realize A Dream“

Fronted by legendary guitarist and vocalist Scott “Wino” Weinrich, iconic doom and heavy metal powerhouse THE OBSESSED comes roaring back after seven years with their awaited new studio album and Ripple Music debut “Gilded Sorrow”. Expanded to a four-piece with Jason Taylor on rhythm guitar, their music is more aggressive, straightforward and downright mean than ever before: firing on all cylinders, the foursome delivers their most rocking album of all time with “Gilded Sorrow”. Described by Wino as “the heaviest thing he’s ever done“, this new sonic onslaught from the mighty East Coast foursome is about to leave an indelible mark on the 2024 heavy music landscape!

“Gilded Sorrow” was produced by Frank Marchand, Scott “Wino” Weinrich and Jason Taylor. Mixed and engineered by Frank Marchand and mastered by Alan Douches. Scott “Wino” Weinrich is a living legend. In a way, he is the American version of Lemmy and shares many traits with the late, much-beloved metal icon. He’s always been a rebel, loner and an outsider in an outsider scene, pursuing his music without regard for popularity or acceptance. In the process, he came to be considered one of the early pioneers of American doom. All of this began when he founded THE OBSESSED back in the 70s, then pursued through his many other outfits such as Saint Vitus or Spirit Caravan. As a key part of the 80s Washington/Maryland music scene, his music earned the respect of metal, punk and crossover fans alike while often being dubbed doom metal. Looking back, it was just gritty, street-wise American metal with a cynical bent and psychedelic flair, and this is what made him the unique and timeless heavy music icon he is today.

THE OBSESSED was formed in the late 1970s in Potomac, Maryland by legendary guitarist Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan). The band spawned in the realm of musicians/artists such as Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa, The Dictators, and The Stooges. The earliest lineup consisted of Wino, bassist Mark Laue, guitarist John Reese, and drummer Dave Flood. In 1983, Wino took over vocal duties and the band became a three-piece to record the Sodden Jackal EP. The band broke up in the late 80s after Wino moved to California to join Saint Vitus. At that time, a German label, Hellhound Records, and the booking agency that had signed Saint Vitus, released The Obsessed, originally recorded in 1985, prompting Wino to reform THE OBSESSED. After multiple lineup changes, the band signed to Columbia Records in 1994 to release their third and final album, The Church Within. Despite highly acclaimed reviews, they would break up following the release, seeing Wino forming Spirit Caravan (then Shine) and other projects.

In September 2011, THE OBSESSED returned to the stage at Roadburn Festival with The Church Within‘s legendary lineup of Wino, Greg Rogers, and Guy Pinhas. The band played a few more reunion shows over the next couple of years, including Hellfest Open Air in 2012 and Maryland Deathfest XI in May 2013 with bassist Reid Raley. Wino announced the full-time return of the band iin March 2016 and the band’s official signing to Relapse Records to record the follow-up to The Church Within. The new lineup originally consisted of Spirit Caravan bassist Dave Sherman and Wino’s longtime friend and former road crew member Brian Costantino (drums). On October 31st, 2016, Wino announced a new lineup change, including Bruce Falkinburg (bass) and Seraphim (guitar), making it the first time the band had been a four-piece in over thirty-five years.

In 2017, THE OBSESSED unleashed Sacred, the band’s first studio album in over twenty years, further pushing the band into the annals of heavy metal history. After a few years on the road, the lineup stabilized around Brian Costantino on drums, Chris Angleberger on bass, Jason Taylor on guitar, and Scott “Wino” Weinrich at the helm. The iconic foursome is now ready to embrace this new decade in doom with their awaited fifth album “Gilded Sorrow”, to be released in February 2024 as part of their new collaboration with Californian label Ripple Music.

THE OBSESSED is:
Scott “Wino” Weinrich – lead guitar, lead vocals
Brian Costantino – drums, backing vocals
Chris Angleberger – bass
Jason Taylor – rhythm guitar

METH. Share Music Video for Sophomore Album Title Track ‘Shame’

Posted by tarjavirmakari on January 13, 2024

Photographer credit: Vanessa Valadez

meth. have shared the title track from their forthcoming sophomore album, SHAME, with an accompanying music video. The Chicago, IL experimental metal and noise rock project’s second full-length is seven tracks of blistering, visceral agony, and is set for release via Prosthetic Records on February 2. meth. will be celebrating the SHAME‘s release with a gallery exhibition and live event at Thalia Hall in Chicago, IL on February 2 – tickets available here.

Stream Shame via Apple Music | TIDAL | Deezer | Bandcamp and Spotify
Pre-order Shame here.

Speaking on the single and music video release .meth’s Seb Alvarez (vocals) comments: “Shame was a hard song to write. It pulls a lot from personal experiences and realizations of concealing toxic behaviors from your loved ones while confronting your own selfish behaviors.”

SHAME‘s title hangs heavy throughout the duration of the songs themselves, a weight around the neck of its creators. Inspired by a tumultuous time for vocalist Seb, the album is an uncomfortable listen as he grapples with then-undiagnosed bipolar and unchecked addiction issues. Whilst the themes of shame, deception and trauma are not new to meth., they have previously been dressed up with a fictional veneer. This time around, Alvarez lays his vulnerabilities bare, offering up the darkest parts of himself.

The oppressive burden of shame, galvanised by behaviours rooted in addiction and mental illness seeps into the anxiety-inducing atmosphere of the album. Alvarez chronicles the differing types of shame and rock bottom feelings from Catholic guilt instilled in him from a young age, through to the more recent deceptions of concealing the effects of alcoholism. As he details his constant internal battles and downward spirals, everything is channelled into the creative process. The result is stark, unyielding and raw.

For the first time, the band wrote as a unit, indicating a shift in focus. Alvarez focussed on the lyrical and thematic elements of the album and created more room for his bandmates to thrive. The ominous sound of SHAME is littered with experimental flourishes, as meth. lean into noise rock and metal simultaneously. There is an industrial bleakness to the album that propels it along, at some points as though through gritted teeth. Operating under a remit that included avoiding a reliance on riffs, meth. instead let rhythm – specifically their drums – carry the weight and forward motion of their compositions. Recorded in winter 2022-23 by Zack Farrer at Rose Raft in New Douglas, IL, the album was later mixed and mastered by Colin Marston.

The album artwork depicts a child holding hands with two parental figures, her face tipped upwards with a joyful smile. Created by Alvarez, the image is designed to represent the bliss you feel as a child, before the weight of responsibility, guilt, shame and more come creeping into your life. Once gone, that blissful ignorance is impossible to restore in full. SHAME is a paean to that lost innocence, a lament for what follows.

SHAME tracklist:

  1. Doubt
  2. Compulsion
  3. Blush
  4. Give In
  5. Cruelty
  6. Shame
  7. Blackmail

LAST IN TIME’s Debut Album “Too Late” Out Now

Italy’s Last In Time‘s debut album “Too Late” is now available from Rockshots Records as of January 12th, 2024. Inviting fans to experience a journey through various musical influences. “Too Late” is a rock album that combines the melody of AOR, the power of hard rock and metal, with a nod to 90s progressive rock. From the first track to the last, every song exudes energy and emotions, making it impossible to stand still in front of the speakers. The roaring guitars, powerful rhythm section, and charismatic vocals of the frontmen give each track an unmistakable authenticity and intensity. The musical diversions and sonic settings showcase a band that is not afraid to push beyond its limits and explore new sounds, without ever losing the essence of their vibrant rock.

Guitarist Massimo Marchetti comments on the debut:

“Finally, the long-awaited moment has arrived! We couldn’t be happier to present our first album “Too Late” to the whole world, in collaboration with Rockshots Records, of which we are truly proud to be a part. From the very first listen, it’s clear that we, as a band want to present ourselves with a level of maturity and confidence in its sound. We will do everything possible to earn the respect of fans with this record and our future live performances.”

Last in Time is a project that was formed in 2021 as a studio band, intending to record original songs in the melodic and classic rock/AOR genre. Leading the project is Massimo Marchetti, the songwriter, producer, and arranger of the group’s songs. The project has a diverse lineup (listed below), as it was managed as an All-star band, to ensure that each song had the right artistic touch. The ability to have multiple voices, including a female voice, greatly expanded the compositional proposal of the songs, allowing for a range of genres and nuances.

However, the group’s sound, while diverse, remains anchored to a common thread, which is a passion for classic rock in its various forms. The presence of experienced and motivated musicians made the album recording process a wonderful journey, which will continue with live sessions and the start of a true project focused on recording more albums in the future.

Recommended for fans of Toto, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Symphony X, Trans Siberian Orchestra, and Savatage, Last In Time‘s debut album “Too Late” is available now at https://bfan.link/too-late-8

SONARA – TRACK BY TRACK

1. Hot Rod Lady

The song begins with a powerful riff with baritone guitar. It’s a rock blues mix with a modern sound. The song tells the story of a woman who drives through the desert and breaks all the speed limits. She quenches her thirst with cans of beer that she drinks in one gulp. She squeezes the empty cans and throws them to the side of the road. Always under the hypnotic roar of the engine and the modified amps, the only way to keep her sanity is by leaving a vast trail of dust, lovers, broken hearts, and empty bottles in her wake.

2. Snakebite

I wanted to achieve the darkest and swampiest point on the album. A poisoned love story narrated as if it were a duel to the death at gunpoint in the Wild West. She feels enslaved, as if bitten by a snake. It is clear to her that she does not intend to waste her last bullet by sitting around while the poison makes its way through her veins.

3. So Long
It is a very funny song with touches of American rock. The song conveys an air of hope, melancholy, and a desire to return home. The song’s protagonist makes a stop at the last motel before getting lost. The neon lights on the sign are flashing and the swimming pool is empty. Inside the room, she contemplates the ashes of her past, the broken dishes, and disappointments, and the defeats.

4. Have Mercy
I wanted to write a song in the style of all those country singers from the 50s of which I am a big fan of. The song is about a woman in a bar talking to a handsome stranger. Tomorrow, voluntarily or involuntarily, nobody will remember anything. As long as the bar remains open, the fantasy will endure. “Put another song on the jukebox and may God have mercy on your soul. Here’s to never seeing each other again to the bleak sight of an empty glass.”

5. What I Want

This rock song was a lot of fun to record and features double guitars in the guitar solo. It is a statement of what we all want in life. To be proud of what we really want, and not to be worried about criticism. You only get one life, so enjoy the ride. The lyrics say it all – “I do what I want and when I want, and I never look back. No one will ever tell me how to live my life.”

6. Voodoo Wheels
This is the rockabilly song on the album. Her only lover is her Cadillac. She feels like a Goddess under the neon lights. She’s possessed by the voodoo of rims. She feels free and wild. Anything is possible. She may end up as a movie star, or she will be seen on TV bathed in champagne and diamonds. She drives to 4-46 junction in Cholame, California, where she reminisces about James Dean.

7. Call Me Tonight

This song is probably the fun highpoint of the album. I would describe it as soul pop. It’s about the longing and hope for love; for a phone call that will make this night a night to remember.

8. Let It Ride

The song has two parts. It’s two songs in one. The first part has a Hendrix vibe. The second part is darker and more psychedelic, with lots of improvisational guitar solos, including the theremin. The protagonist of the story is a sexy casino hustler who wears her best dresses and cheating heels. She feels alive gambling and cheating at Blackjack. She is pursued by the law, but feels more alive than ever, playing the part of a devilish female outlaw.
