NIXIL Share Guitar Playthrough for ‘Collapsing the Poles’ + Kick Off US Tour

Posted by tarjavirmakari on September 29, 2023

Baltimore, Maryland black metal quintet NIXIL has today shared a guitar playthrough for Collapsing the Poles, ahead of their fall US tour dates. The tour starts today in Youngstown, OH, with full dates and details below. Collapsing the Poles is taken from NIXIL‘s recently released sophomore album, From the Wound Spilled Forth Fire, via Prosthetic Records.

Stream and order From the Wound Spilled Forth Fire here.

Speaking on the guitar playthrough, Shane Gardner comments: “My number one ‘BuZzy’ is a partscaster (a fender body and neck) that I purchased for $200 and added a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail Humbucker and a killswitch, no toggle.

“For the playthrough I overdubbed my track using an SM57 through a Marshall CODE 50 Practice amp into Adobe Audition.

“I use the inverted triad on a lot of our songs. Collapsing has them throughout the verse sections. I think they add texture to a simple chord structure and it adds a hypnotic effect with the addition of Alden’s guitar note bend. It’s all in the hands I guess.”

Of their upcoming tour, the band adds: “We leave this Friday, September 29, for eight dates in the northeastern US to celebrate the release of From the Wound Spilled Forth Fire. This album – like all of our music – is best experienced live and loud; bring your rage, your aching heart, your unquenchable thirst for catharsis and join us.”

Having made their presence known with their 2021 debut, All Knots Untied, NIXIL has steadily garnered a loyal following through live appearances across the United States – sharing stages alongside Hulder, Evoken, Molder, Yatra, and an appearance at Maryland Deathfest 2022 along the way. Time spent on the road served to sharpen their collective musicianship and fully realise NIXIL’s desire for collaborative unity and authenticity within the group ahead of From the Wound Spilled Forth Fire’s creation.

NIXIL’s scorched earth approach to black metal’s sonic extremities offer a radical alternative to secular approaches to, and readings of, their craft. Where All Knots Untied was an introductory affair for the quintet, 2023 sees the band further expand upon concepts of chaos gnosticism, ego-death, self-empowerment and freedom.

After solidifying their line-up in its current form, with the arrival of guitarist / backing vocalist Alden, NIXIL opted to record From the Wound Spilled Forth Fire live at Magpie Cage Recording Studio with J. Robbins. The resulting six songs seethe with a frenzied despair, whilst more ominous passages breathe with a disquieting existential terror in every percussive and rhythmically meditative trance, exactly as the band intended to capture before handing mastering duties to James Plotkin.

NIXIL’s latest offering is more than invocation and manifestation alone, From the Wound Spilled Forth Fire is an invitation for those shackled by earth and flesh to dispel from regressive human made traditions and misplaced guilt and shatter the illusion of a self.

1. Collapsing the Poles
2. In Thrall

BLACK STONE CHERRY – Chris Robertson (lead vox/guitar), Ben Wells (guitar/bkg vox), drummer John-Fred Young (drums/bkg vox) and ‘new’ bassist, Steve Jewell Jr. (ex-Otis) – have unleashed their hotly anticipated eighth studio album, ‘Screamin’ At The Sky’ via Mascot Records.  To coincide with the album arriving, the Kentucky four-piece have revealed a video for the track, ‘When The Pain Comes.’

The band tell us: “‘When The Pain Comes’ is a song that talks about squaring up with your inner pain and not letting it control you or take you over.  Sometimes we have to push ourselves to find out who we are and always be ready to face whatever obstacles that may be thrown our way. Our part of the video was shot in Nashville, TN, in front of a green screen and it was great to work with Kyle Loftus again, who also did our video for ‘Nervous’.  The video came out great, thanks to his incredible work and also an amazing performance by Audrey Kremer.”

Stream / Purchase the album HERE

In recent months, BLACK STONE CHERRY have dropped four other singles from ‘Screamin’ At The Sky.’  Check out the lyric video for the title track here, the official video for ‘Nervous’ here, plus ‘Out of Pocket’ here, and most recent release, ‘Smile, World’ here.

‘Screamin’ At The Sky’ features all-new material written collaboratively while on tour, but when it came time to record, BSC tried something they’ve always dreamed of doing: tracking an album at The Plaza Theater in Glasgow, Kentucky – a legendary 1020-seat venue built in 1934 that boasts meticulous acoustics.  In June of 2022, the band rented the whole place, brought in all its recording equipment and trusty engineer, Jordan Westfall.  They set up the basement as the control room and the stage as the live drum room.  Time between recording sessions and incredible room ambience have resulted in a career high watermark for BSC.

Today GRAVEYARD release their brand new album 6 via Nuclear Blast Records. 6 is easily identifiable as the most striking, original album of GRAVEYARD’s story so far. A gently lysergic blend of desolate guitars, simmering Hammond and lithe, nimble bass and drums, the Swedes demonstrate a lightness of touch that they have only hinted at in the past. To coincide with the albums release, the band have also revealed a visualiser for the track ‘Bright Lights’.

The band comments ”It took its not always so sweet time, but the day for 6 to be released is finally here. Now let it spin”

2. Twice
3. I Follow You
4. Breathe In Breathe Out
5. Sad Song
6. Just A Drop
7. Bright Lights
8. No Way Out

The album was recorded at Silence Studios and Don Pierre Studios and was produced by Don Ahlsterberg, who previously worked with the band on Graveyard (2007), Hisingen Blues (2011) and Lights Out (2012).

About GRAVEYARD

As enduring and authentic as an old school leather jacket, GRAVEYARD have long since mastered the art of rock’n’roll. Formed in 2006 in Gothenburg, Sweden, their shared passion for hard rock, psychedelia and the eternal bedrock of blues marked them out from the start. Led by vocalist/guitarist Joakim Nilsson, they opened their account with their now seminal self-titled Tee Pee Recordings debut in 2007, showcasing fiery chemistry and some wildly imaginative songwriting. Subsequently snapped up by the mighty Nuclear Blast Records, the band’s rise to prominence was swift and irresistible.

In 2008, guitarist Jonatan Ramm expanded the ranks, joining Nilsson, bassist Rikard Edlund and drummer Axel Sjöberg for the recording of second album Hisingen Blues. A critical smash that more than lived up to the hype, it established GRAVEYARD as rock’n’roll heavyweights. A thunderous, soul-stirring live band, with subtlety and swagger in equal amounts, they spent the next decade keeping fans of loose-limbed and earthy rock music in a near-constant state of rapture. From the rootsy clatter of 2012’s Lights Out to the magical, muscular grooves of 2018’s Peace (taking in the sepia-tinted folk doom of 2015’s Innocence & Decadence along the way), GRAVEYARD have made some of the most vital and vivid heavy rock of the 21st century.

GRAVEYARD is
Joakim Nilsson – vocals, guitar
Jonatan Ramm – vocals, guitar
Truls Mörck – vocals, bass
Oskar Bergenheim – drums

Morten Veland (SIRENIA, MORTEMIA and founder of TRISTANIA)  released the fifth MORTEMIA  song from ‘The Covid Aftermath Sessions’ today. The track is entitled ‘Kråkevisa’ (The Crow’s Hymn) and features Lindy-Fay Hella from the band Wardruna on guest vocals, it’s available on all digital platforms as of today the 29th of September 2023. The video will premiere on Mortemia’s official youtube channel, premiering today at 18:00 hours CET.

Song on digital platforms: Kråkevisa (feat. Lindy-Fay Hella) by Mortemia – DistroKid

Here follow quotes from Morten and Lindy-Fay:

Morten Veland:

I’m proud and honoured to welcome Lindy-Fay Hella from Wardruna as my special guest for ‘The Covid Aftermath Sessions’. The song we have done together is an old traditional Nordic folk song called Kråkevisa. It’s a song that both me and Lindy-Fay learned to sing in elementary school, and we’ve both loved the song since then. We have made our own version of the song that is quite different from the original, we slowed down the tempo quite a bit and made it heavier and more melancholic.

I feel truly privileged and thankful to have Lindy-Fay on board this project, and I am really pleased to be sharing this song with you all. The song is available on all digital platforms now.

Lindy-Fay:

Hi, I am Lindy-Fay Hella and am the guest on Mortemia’s new track, Kråkevisa, the Crow’s hymn. I was absolutely thrilled when Morten asked me to do our very own version of this traditional, Scandinavian song. An old favourite. It is about a man in the forest and his battle against a giant crow. One of the lines goes something like this: “Never have I heard something that shameful! Have you ever heard of a crow capable to kill a man?”

After 11 years of silence Norwegian multi-instrumentalist, producer and artist Morten Veland activated his solo project Mortemia during the early stages of the Covid 19 pandemic, this time with a brand new concept consisting of collaborations with multiple guest singers. ‘The Pandemic Pandemonium Sessions’ was a series of singles released on a monthly basis, each song featuring a well known and highly profiled guest singer from the metal scene. Now he is ready to endeavor on the next project entitled ‘The Covid Aftermath Sessions’, once more the project will feature multiple amazing guest singers.

So far the following singers has contributed for his collaborations:

  • Madeleine Liljestam (Eleine)
  • Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion, Ayreon, MaYaN, Dark Horse White Horse)
  • Alessia Scolletti (Temperance, ERA)
  • Liv Kristine (Liv Kristine, ex-Theatre of Tragedy, ex-Leaves Eyes)
  • Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum, The Dark Side of the Moon)
  • Brittney Slayes (Unleash the Archers)
  • Maja Shining (Forever Still)
  • Erica Ohlsson (Metalite)
  • Heidi Parviainen (Dark Sarah, ex Amberian Dawn)

The iconic KK’S PRIEST – featuring Judas Priest alum and GRAMMY Award musicians K.K. Downing (guitar) and Tim “Ripper” Owens (vocals), along with A.J. Mills (guitar), Tony Newton (bass) and Sean Elg (drums) – have finally unveiled their new sophomore offering, The Sinner Rides Again, to the masses today!

The album is already being praised by critics around the world as an impressive follow up to the band’s acclaimed 2021 debut. “The Sinner Rides Again is an absolutely ripping metal record, with a huge, gleaming production job and performances that crackle with passion and intensity,” offers Blabbermouth, while Metal Hammer UK lauds the album as “…tapping into the fist-pumping energy of classic heavy metal like it’s 1983 all over again.”

In celebration of today’s release, the band has revealed another blistering new music video, this time for the menacing track “Hymn 66”. The weighty riff-fest boasts slow and low, metallic-soaked punches of heavy metal fire!

K.K. Downing says about “Hymn 66” and today’s album release:
“It’s time to take a look into another world – a world where the most powerful have to succumb to enduring their penance for all eternity. So best beware, as those of the highest power may one day gather to summon you as their victim, and be certain there will be no escape as your presence will be demanded by singing ‘Hymn 66’!

I am truly excited that the time has come to release our second album, The Sinner Rides Again. I hope that fans all over the metal world will enjoy it, and I am looking forward to playing these songs for you on our upcoming world tour.”

On the heels of their highly-lauded 2021 debut album, Sermons Of The Sinner – which debuted within the Top 20 on charts in the United States, the UK, Germany, Sweden, Finland and more – KK’S PRIEST return to sin again! With The Sinner Rides Again, KK’S PRIEST double down on the ripping melodic force of their debut, Sermons Of The Sinner – which Metal Hammer UK dubbed “hugely enjoyable” and Metal Injection cited as boasting “catchy hooks and plenty of guitar wizardry”. The Sinner Rides Again wields nine tracks of pure hellfire, produced and written by Downing and mixed/mastered by Jacob Hansen.

After stepping out of the Judas Priest spotlight, the return of K.K. Downing was uncertain. Nearly ten years after its onset, the genre-defining guitar icon returned from his hiatus with proof that he was nowhere ready to cease writing classic metal songs or to put away his famous Flying V guitars – taking part in acclaimed international comeback performances (including with his former Judas Priest bandmates when they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November 2022) that would act as harbingers of the formation of KK’S PRIEST.

Downing was recently quoted saying, “We’ve lost a lot of great people – Dio, Lemmy, for example – but this amazing and unique style of music must be preserved for as long as possible and I feel it within me to continue to play my role, as I always have, and to defend this metal genre, which we all know and love.” The Sinner Rides Again is a testament to this call for the classics while speeding full force into the future, delivered by some of heavy metal’s most essential performers.

The Sinner Rides Again track listing:
1. Sons Of The Sentinel
2. Strike Of The Viper
3. Reap The Whirlwind
4. One More Shot At Glory
5. Hymn 66
6. The Sinner Rides Again
7. Keeper Of The Graves
8. Pledge Your Souls
9. Wash Away Your Sins
