HORNDAL to Make Speech at Örebro University

Swedish rust metal group HORNDAL have announced that vocalist Henrik Levahn will be making an appearance at Örebro University for a guest lecture on October 25. Levahn will be participating in a discussion on company closures and ethics, with regards to both the band’s eponymous hometown and country.

Speaking on the announcement, HORNDAL‘s Henrik Levahn comments: “Professor Magnus Hansson contacted me and asked me to be “the emotional part” of his field. Downsizing, layoffs and shutdowns are very rational with facts and figures, my goal is to give a voice to the feelings of frustration, anger and fear. All of these emotions were a part of my younger years in Horndal when the steel mill was shut down.”

Örebro University professor Magnus Hansson adds: “Their music is all about people living in Horndal, the closure of the mill there and the town’s slow decay. My previous research has focused on company closures. I have tried to describe and analyse what happens in a corporate organisation after deciding to close and until its employees go home for the last time. We were brought together, with our different perspectives, by common issues. Sharing the same interests, enthusiasm, and commitment to understanding dying mill towns, closures and – in my case – organisational mortality.”

HORNDAL are no strangers to voicing their concerns and offering critique on the pitfalls of big tech and post-industrial decline, with their 2021 album Lake Drinker and follow-up EP Be Evil both exploring themes of the real world consequences of American tech on Horndal and beyond.

The guest lecture is planned for 25 October, 9:15am –12:00pm CEST, in lecture hall M at Örebro University. HORNDAL‘s Henrik Levahn will participate via Zoom.

HORNDAL‘s latest release, Be Evil, is out now.

CAVERN DEEP Cover Video for Philip Glass’ Song ‘Koyaanisqatsi’

Doom distributors CAVERN DEEP have released a new video for their cover of “Koyaanisqatsi” by Philip Glass which recently premiered at The Obelisk. The premiere can be viewed here.

The track can also be purchased from the bands Bandcamp page here: https://caverndeep.bandcamp.com/music

“We in Cavern Deep have been working a lot behind the curtain lately to get some new music out into the world. Our 2nd album is already mixed and mastered, and we have a lot of interesting single releases in the works as well. One of them features Thomas V Jäger from Monolord.

So there will be a steady stream of releases from now on and this is the first of them. We have made a cover of “Koyaanisqatsi”, a Philip Glass piece that features in the movie with the same name. Our thinking was to make a cover of a non-Doom song that still Dooms more than any Doom we have ever heard.

Enjoy!”

VICTORIA K Release Music Video ‘Pomegranate’, New Album Out Now

Australia’s VICTORIA K‘s new sophomore album “Kore” is now available via Rockshots Records and to celebrate its release day today, the band is sharing their new music video for the track “Pomegranate“, which was the first song that was developed for the album.

The band explains the track: “Being the first song we wrote for the record, the whole album’s sound ended up being based off this one song. Certain parts of this song take reference again from old ethnic folk sounds and scales. We wanted to incorporate ethnic instruments such as the hammered dulcimer and touberleki, (the Greek hand drum), both these sounds directly coming from Victoria Knights upbringing, we are really proud to incorporate this old and ethnic culture into our music in order to create a new sonic experience. The section of the tale that this song derives from the part of the story where Persephone eats the six pomegranate seeds, ultimately keeping her trapped in Hades for 6 months each year. We wanted to capture the feeling and emotions that come from this part of the story through the sound and lyrics. The feeling of being utterly, trapped, lost and in a state of desperation. One thing that we believe makes this song a point of difference from the rest of the album is the monologue in the song, which is taken directly from the original ancient Greek text (Homeric Hymn to Demeter) that tells this part of the story. We wanted to add a piece of authentic history to the record!“

“Kore” explores modern-day issues through the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (the story of Persephone). Victoria K conceptualized the idea for the album with her producer Lee Bradshaw and then spent many months researching and analyzing the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, even meeting with experts of the Homeric Hymns from Greece. The story was then broken up into its different parts where Victoria Knight wrote the lyrics and developed the melodies for each section of the tale, exploring the myth from a modern perspective.

The tracks were written specifically to encapsulate the various sections of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter and tell the story chronologically through each song and the music grows in intensity throughout the record capturing the emotional state of Persephone and other characters as the story progresses.

The various instruments on “Kore” were then written by Victoria around the lyrics and further enhanced and developed through the production process. Lee Bradshaw then finalized the songs by writing orchestral scores for each song, which were recorded live in Europe, before the final mixing and mastering.

“We wanted to take a new approach with this record and to grow our sound and bring something new to Victoria K. Incorporating sounds from our vocalist’s ethnic culture and heritage is something we are so extremely proud of! A concept album is something we really wanted to explore, and we are so excited to bring you this ancient story and create a sonic experience and journey for all our listeners. We cannot wait to share this new stage of Victoria K!” adds Knight.

MERRYWEATHER STARK WACKERMAN Release Lyric Video for ‘Judgement Day’

MERRYWEATHER STARK WACKERMAN have released the official lyric video for “Judgement Day”, the first single from the forthcoming studio album “Cosmic Affect”, set to be released on November 11th by Metalville Records.

It all started on November 29, 2019, when Janne Stark was in Las Vegas with Neil Merryweather to finish the second “Merryweather Stark” album. During this time, they were invited to visit the Skeleton Key Recordings studio. There they met drummer John Wackerman. Neil, Janne and John hit it off musically right away and the ideas and inspirations were flowing. Within a few days, 10 outstanding hard rock songs were created. Musically, they leaned towards the 70s era, with inspirations from bands like Bad Company, Point Blank, ZZ Top and even a touch of King’s X in a few riffs.

On 28 March 2021, Neil passed away from a malignant brain tumour. This is where the story could have ended, but together with Neil’s partner Kathleen, it was decided that the album should be finished and released.

The title of the album, “Cosmic Affect”, was John’s idea, as there was surely something cosmic that made these three minds write a whole album of great songs in just two and a half days.

In the past decade, HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY have become pioneers of the post black metal movement, gained a significant worldwide following with “III: Trauma” and even entered the German charts on #4 with their latest album “Maere”. For the 10th anniversary of their debut album, the Austrian duo, consisting of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter M.S. as well as vocalist and lyricist J.J., will take a deep dive into their past:

Since the band was never fully happy with the production of their first two albums, “Harakiri For The Sky” and “Aokigahara”, they decided to not just remaster but fully re-record both releases in their entirety, together with longtime collaborator Krimh on drums and a re-designed cover artwork by Art Of Maquenda. The re-recorded versions will be released on December 9th via AOP Records.

“As some of you might know, we had produced these albums ourselves and wanted to re-do both with the recent possibilities that we have”, the duo explains. “We did our best to keep their original spirit, but added a vibe that seemed more fitting to the current standards of this band. Ten years ago, we couldn’t really imagine where this journey would lead us to, so redacting these first, but nevertheless very important tentative steps was something really dear to us.”

In order to get an impression of how these albums will sound when re-imagined in 2022, you can watch the new music video for the Tears For Fears cover ‘Mad World’, the rare bonus track from 2014’s “Aokigahara“:

The debut album will be available as:
– grey lim.99 via Napalm Records

Just recently, vocalist J.J. has also announced his first novel titled “Die Asche vergangener Winter” that you can also pre-order at the AOP shop:

“Some of you might already know, but during the great years of loss and agony I hid for a few months in a cabin in the woods, where I wrote a novel called “Die Asche vergangener Winter”, which will be released the same day via Edition Outbird”, he states. “There will also be an English version called “Snowburial”, translated by our guitarist Daniel Lang. Summaries of the book can be found on Edition Outbird’s website.“

Finnish symphonic power metallers EVERFROST have shared their next single “Hacking To The Gate” ft. Shiro Neko from their forthcoming EP of anime cover songs entitled “Frostbites”, which is due out on November 11th via Rockshots Records.

Digital – https://bfan.link/hacking-to-the-gate

The band adds about the track:

“Steins; Gate is one of the highest-ranked anime series of all time and its opening song ‘Hacking to the Gate’ has become one of those unskippable OPs beloved by many anime fans. We chose this track for our anime covers-EP ‘Frostbites’ as a nice surprise and also a chance to explore our capabilities as a band, as the song contains some quite unorthodox stylistic elements. This is an emotional show centered around science fiction, electronics, and most importantly time travel, so the song’s mix of colorful chords, strange sounds, and sci-fi-inspired effects create a thick, melancholic aesthetic that fits the theme perfectly. Our goal was to capture this and revamp it authentically in our powerful style. This definitely made it the most intricate and time-consuming track to put together, such as a piece like this deserves.

For the vocals on this track, we had the pleasure of working with the insanely talented Shiro Neko, known for her incredible anime vocal covers on Youtube and working with other artists. Her vocal tone and impeccable Japanese pronunciation were essential in delivering this song. One aspect of the Frostbites EP we haven’t talked about much is the larger investment made in production this time around. From the time put into pre-production to the studios we used, up until the mixing and mastering processes, care was taken to bring the EVERFROST sound to a whole new level. Hacking to the Gate proved to be the song to showcase perhaps the best of all the tracks.”
