“BIG” JOHN HARTE, Rock ’N Roll’s Premier Concert Security Man And Legendary Bodyguard, Dies at 70

“BIG” JOHN HARTE, longtime bodyguard for iconic music artists including KISS, IRON MAIDEN, BILLY IDOL, and PRINCE, passed away on Friday, February 11 in Hollywood, Florida. He was 70 years old.

Born John Joseph Harte III in Newark, NJ on November 15, 1951, he was the older of two boys raised in a traditional Irish-Catholic family in nearby Passaic. When Harte’s mother unexpectedly passed away, he helped support his family while dreaming of becoming a famous musician. The rock-and-roll band that Harte played drums and percussion for did not last long, but a chance experience keeping people at bay outside a Grateful Dead concert would change the trajectory of his life.

“I was noticed at that show because I was big, dressed in denim and black, looked tough with my biker’s mustache and could handle a rowdy crowd,” Harte recalled while working on his memoir in 2021. “I soon found myself handling security at Passaic’s Capitol Theater, Jersey City’s Roosevelt Stadium and New York’s Fillmore East for musicians ranging from Gregg Allman to Lou Reed to the New York Dolls. I learned all aspects of the music business ‘ground up’ by ushering guests, tuning instruments for performers and doing whatever was needed to ensure a concert ran smoothly.”

John’s efforts paid off: In late 1975, he was offered the job of a lifetime—traveling on tour with KISS!

“A fella named Rick Stuart, who was already working security with the group, knew I wanted to get on the road as the next step in my career. After the band played the Capitol in October 1975, Rick took me to the hotel room where they were staying. I met tour manager JR Smalling, and was given — or subjected to (laughter) — an impromptu interview. A few days later, I was offered the job by manager Bill Aucoin, soon went on the group’s first European tour and worked an average of six days per week for almost a decade. An experience of a lifetime!”

“Guys like [John] are a rare breed,” states KISS co-founder and frontman, Paul Stanley from his Foreword contributed to Harte’s forthcoming book:

“John was a formidable presence and was rough around the edges for sure, but that never overshadowed the dedication and conscience he would show while babysitting and coddling four spoiled and needy rockstars who were always vying for attention and affirmation that they were his favorite.”

“Big John is a legend in the KISS world, nearly as big as the band itself,” recalls Michael Brandvold, co-founder of KISS-fan podcast Three Sides of The Coin. “Growing up I saw him as this larger than life, imposing figure who was tasked with protecting the identities of the KISS members. But, when I first met him in 2018 I quickly saw John for who he really was… a quiet, gentle giant with a big heart.”

After an exclusive eight-year stint with KISS, Harte spent much of the 1980s touring with British Heavy Metal band, IRON MAIDEN, enjoying more than his share of all perks the music business had to offer— the Rock Star Lifestyle that millions have fantasized about.

“John had worked with us for several years and I recently had a great visit with him laughing and sharing stories together,” recalls longtime Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain. “A great guy and valued member of the family who will be sadly missed!”

Harte’s days with Maiden would lead to a four-decade friendship with Steve Altman, who signed on as bassist Steve Harris’s personal assistant and later encouraged Harte to chronicle his Rock ’N Roll adventures:

“I was young and John took me under his wing, even as we both moved on to other music industry opportunities,” says Altman. “He was a constant ‘go to’ in my life and was always there for me.”

Harte would eventually settle down and marry the love of his life, MaryAnn, and have their son Brian. Although he would give up the day-to-day, grueling schedule required of world touring, Harte would continue working as late as the 2003 KISS/Aerosmith tour. It was then Harte realized that he had his own following of supporters, and would travel to various conventions and an official KISS Kruise in 2017 to meet them.

“John was loved by so many fans of the bands he had worked for,” said his wife. “The admiration that was always shown to him by those whom he met always blew him away. He treasured those moments.”

Harte’s book will be completed and published posthumously in 2023. “John was not only a part of KISStory but, in a sense, also a rock star in his own right,” says Harte’s co-author Robert V. Conte. “He witnessed first-hand how the concert scene evolved from the days of the most basic, often error-ridden performances to the visual and audio spectacles most concerts offer today. John and I spoke often over the past few years developing his book and I promised his memoir would be published no matter what. Despite his terrible loss, I will keep that promise.”

THE PROTON ENERGY PILLS Release New Singles ‘Tombstone’ + ‘Revolution’

Some 30 years after they disbanded, Wollongong’s seminal pre-grunge rock band THE PROTON ENERGY PILLS are back and ready to fill in the long time between drinks.

In what is best described as an archival recording project rather than an official re-union, THE PROTONS are amazed to announce the release of two-killer new/old tracks, ‘Revolution’ & ‘Tombstone’. Both songs were originally written and performed by the band back in the day, and are two songs out of a bunch of songs the band never had the opportunity to record and release. They sit perfectly in the band’s noisy, long-haired, high-energy rock style.

‘Revolution’ & ‘Tombstone’ are out now on all digital platforms via Golden Robot Records, plus the official music video for ‘Revolution‘ is now available to watch on YouTube – check it out below.

The story of how THE PROTONS came back from the dead is eerily reminiscent of how young American blues fans in the 60’s went south in search of the blues players from the 30’s and 40’s. The Protons were re-born so to speak after some younger Sydney fans/musos went south to Wollongong in search of the band members. These younger fans had long passed live recordings of the Protons amongst each other and formed an idea to properly record the great songs the band never had the opportunity to put down before they disbanded.

The reborn line up of The PROTONS features original singer & guitarist (and main songwriters) Dave Curley and Stew Cunningham with a bunch of younger musicians from a new generation helping out – Brett Hottes on bass, Grant Lawrence on drums and Jonny Turcinskis on 2nd guitar. Both original members are keen to acknowledge it is the ‘not really’ version of the Proton Energy Pills. Original bassist Jay Curley sadly passed away in 2014 making a genuine re-union impossible.

The original line up of THE PROTONS released a couple of seminal 7” singles and an EP circa 1990 on the Waterfront Records label and also toured as support to MUDHONEY and DINOSAUR JR on their pivotal first Australian tours. Earlier in 2021 a re-issued vinyl LP of THE PROTONS original studio recordings on the Music Farmers label made it to #15 in the ARIA charts.

2022 should also see a full album of previously unreleased songs along the lines of ‘Revolution’ & ‘Tombstone’ and possibly even some live appearances throughout Australia.

Iranian/Norwegian CONFESS Unleash New Video For ‘Hegemony’

Hot off the back of the release of their latest album, “Revenge At All Costs”, Iranian/Norwegian quintet CONFESS have released a brand new video for the track ‘Hegemony’! When asked about the track, frontman Nikan Khosravi had this to say:

“Hegemony is an anthem to all the freedom fighters! Those who know that they can’t just be passive and don’t want to be just an audience!

I personally do believe that before setting anyone free first we should set ourselves free from all the imagery chains that society, politics and religion that put on my hands and feet. That’s when you can be that flame that can light up the millions!”

Describing themselves as a “five-piece street protest”, Confess frontman Khosravi and DJ/sampler Arash Ilkhani have experienced political persecution first-hand. “Revenge at All Costs” is a cry of outrage in the form of chunky down-tuned riffs marinated in the Norwegian winter.

The journey started in junior high school in Tehran when Nikan got a CD from a classmate. It contained music videos by metal bands from the 90s and 2000s. “I was fascinated by the sound of the genre.”, he states. “Ever since this music has been the centre of my life.” Nikan and Arash started the band as teenagers in 2010, releasing their first album “Beginning of Dominion” in 2012. Their early sound gravitated towards old-school death metal and 90s hardcore, always with some grooviness to it.

Nikan started his own label “Opposite Records” in 2014. Up until now, this could sound like the story of any European band. But change the context and being a metal musician in Iran could mean anything from government surveillance to execution. Arrest and prison followed the release of the band’s second album “In Pursuit of Dreams” in 2015. This led to the pair being arrested and facing execution on charges of blasphemy in one of Iran’s harshest prisons.

Fast forward to 2018, when both Nikan and Arash obtained refugee status in Norway. Confess started experimenting with seven strings and adding modern death metal sounds. But the groovy headbanging spirit of their musical DNA is very much alive. Confess has played in public without fear of repercussions ever since. After several concerts in Norway which included opening for Mayhem at Festspillene i Nord, the band have been seeing the fruits of their labour met with glowing praise with the likes of Metal Hammer stating the album “may be one of 2022’s most important releases”.

Speaking about the new album, Nikan had this to say:
“We’re so happy to drop the album! “Revenge At All Costs” is exactly what it says in the title! It took me almost seven years and countless versions of it to finish it, and I couldn’t be happier with the result! We worked with our friend Erling Malm as the producer/mixing engineer and the legendary Machine, who mastered the album and put his magical touch on it at the end! His work with bands like Lamb of God and Suicide Silence had a huge impact on us growing up.”

Texas’ CEDARS Live Interview with Radio J.App Now Available for Streaming

Just recently CEDARS released their stunning radio hit single, entitled ‘Circles’, which is all about rhythms!

CEDARS’ frontlady Sandeigh on ‘Circles’:
“Circles is about rhythms. All of life – everything around – is filled with them. The tides, the moon, the weather, our breath, our blood, you, me. There’s this incredible circular, life-death-life rhythm to everything.

I feel like we get talked out of listening to the wisdom these circles have to offer us. There’s so much knowledge in our bodies and in the natural world and when we tune into those places, they have a lot to say. Sometimes, in order to hear that, we have to be willing to let go of things we think matter, things we might not want to part with, to burn those things down to make room for new growth. That’s part of the life-death-life cycle -that’s part of the cyclical nature of life and growth. Even when it’s uncomfortable or we have to go against popular opinion or maybe the “way we’ve always done things.”

For me, the inner wisdom I hear is often one calling me to a wilder life. She’s asking me to wake up to my true nature and helps me see what needs to die in me to make room for more authenticity. Her voice is wise and daring. (And sometimes asking me to get WAY outside of my comfort zone. But I trust her.)

What circles are you being called to look at in your world? Inside and out…what needs to die and what needs to be tended?”

Currently CEDARS are in the studio working on their next full-length album.

The band issued:
“We got started on new concepts even as we were gearing up to release Cowards back in June.

While Cowards explores a theme of letting go and shedding what’s no longer needed, this new body of work is a deeper look into what comes alongside that purging, and what can be possible in its place. Cowards really feels like a forest fire. Everything was burning down in our actual lives and that, of course, made its way into the stories on that album and the videos we’ve created from it. But some of the most fertile soil is found after fire removes what’s no longer serving the forest. It makes room for new life.

But first we sit and sift through the ashes.

The new album’s title has a lot to do with the pause in-between the burning away and next season. It will explore themes of shadow work and inner patterns, and how the light needs the dark. And as usual, we’re doing it with an expansive and deep soundscape.

We’re excited. We’ve been in the demo phase for a bit and what’s coming together feels really good, like we’re more settled into who we are individually and as a family.”

Stay tuned for more information!

CEDARS released their latest album “Cowards” on June 11th 2021, via Gruene Records.

The band of the concept of the “Cowards” album:
“Cowards, at its core, is an album about choosing yourself, even in the face of great consequences. So often we find ourselves in situations or systems that ask us to minimize ourselves or our desires or even our needs, but there comes a point where we have to make some really tough choices: do we continue to support the system that is crushing us and building itself on our backs, or do we honour our own still, small voice?
The album is the story of finding ourselves in a season of life where those choices were very pressing, and very loud, with very real consequences. There are times when death is necessary to make room for the new, the better, and sometimes the knife is in our own hands. The album, though full of heavy moments, is also woven with bright strands of hope and light, the kind that can only come after great loss and struggle. How quietly we go to war.”

CEDARS is an electronic rock band from central Texas whose music incorporates the DIY ethos of bands like The Pixies and PJ Harvey, the haunting atmospheres of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, and the infectious grooves of MuteMath. CEDARS is more than just a band: it’s is a vision of community, a community driven by the idea that beauty can save the world. Led by longtime friends Sandeigh Kennedy and Drew Heaton, they blend industrial and organic textures, drawing together disparate elements to marry complex sonic landscapes with compelling stories. Gritty synths and wispy vocals; hard hitting beats and delicate textures are the tools they use to tell powerful, authentic stories that explore truth and beauty.

DEMONICAL Reveal First Single ‘Fallen Mountain’ from Upcoming Album

Swedish death metal master’s DEMONICAL premiere a lyric video for the first song to be revealed off the band’s looming album “Mass Destroyer”, set for release on May 6th, 2022, via Agonia Records. Listen to “Fallen Mountain”, below.

Struck by a burst of inspiration, DEMONICAL indulged in a creative spree immediately after the release of their antecedent offering, “World Domination”; and with expertise worthy of death metal veterans, shaped it into “Mass Destroyer”. Developed in less than two years, the album reflects the energy that spawned its creation, and keeps to the Swede’s HM2-beaten track, promising a few twists along the way. Adorned in an old-fashioned attire, “Mass Destroyer” packs a gruesome punch, embodies organic sounding and delivers a truly fiendish experience from well-seasoned old-school death-dealers.

“A huge inspirational boost hit us so why waste time and wait? Just hammer while the metal is hot,” explains the band, as to what seems to be a tried-and-true process, that already preceded “Hellsworn” (2009), “Death Infernal” (2011) and “Darkness Unbound” (2013). “The outcome is here, our seventh full-length and another vicious Demonical assault of Stockholm-style death metal madness and beyond,” the band comments. “Once again and as always, we wanted to crawl back in time and explore the early days of death metal but with traces and hints of various other metallic subgenres.”

Mark Riddick (Absu, Arsis) added his gruesome touch to “Mass Destroyer” in designing the fiendish cover artwork. Glashuset and Sellnoise Studios were used for recording with Johan Hjelm and Jonas Arnberg behind the helm, while Karl Daniel Liden mixed and mastered the album at his Tri-Lamb Studios. “We worked with the same production team as last time and the result turned out nothing but great,” the band continues. “A dynamic and breathing album we all feel very satisfied and proud off. Can’t wait to destroy the masses!”

Tracklisting:
1. We Conquer The Throne
2. Sun Blackened
3. Fallen Mountain
4. Wrathspawn
5. Dödsmarsch
6. Lifeslave
7. Cemented In Ire
8. By Hatred Bound
