STEVE VAI to Release New Album “Inviolate” on January 28th

STEVE VAI and Favored Nations / Mascot Label Group announce CD and digital release of his new studio album Inviolate, coming out on January 28th. LP will follow on March 18th. Pre-Order Here: https://smarturl.it/steve_vai

The recording is a dark-toned fusion-funk workout played almost exclusively on a Gretsch hollow body guitar. As for what led Vai to the unusual (at least for him) model, he says, “It’s on the wall with all the other guitars, and I’d always just look at it and go, ‘One day I’m going to play you…’” He continues, “In writing the chord changes for the solo section, and the solo itself, I dug deep into my academic music theory mind to create a set of chord changes where the harmonic atmosphere shifted on every change. The dense chord structures required a series of synthetic modes to navigate. This approach is along the lines of jazz and fusion players, but I knew I did not want it to sound anything like that and the solo had to be totally melodic. The results were pretty powerful in that the entire solo section evokes melodic atmospheric changes that shift dramatically but work together well.”

Preview “Little Pretty” Here:

Over the course of a more than 40-year career, Steve Vai has routinely transformed what would appear to be outrageously impossible into something very, very possible… and still also pretty outrageous. From his days as Frank Zappa’s “stunt guitar” player to his more recent expansive and exploratory solo work, Vai has continually challenged notions of traditional guitar playing and composition – and on more than one occasion even reimagined the very instrument itself.

Which, he’ll admit, is not necessarily his intention. “I don’t sit around and say, ‘Okay, what can I do now that pushes the boundaries?” Vai explains about his approach to the guitar. “What I do say to myself is, ‘Okay, Vai – what are you going to do now that’s going to interest you, that’s going to fascinate you, and that’s different than anything you’ve done before?”  The answer to that question comes in the form of Vai’s newest and 10th solo album, Inviolate, a nine-song opus that (sorry Steve) does indeed push the boundaries of instrumental guitar music – this time out, Vai quite literally invented not just a new guitar, but also a new guitar-playing technique.

At the same time, Inviolate presents his most focused, streamlined and perhaps invigorating music in years. “It’s very ‘Vai,’ whatever that means,” he says, and then laughs. “Someone else might be better than me at explaining what that is. But it’s just very honest music. Because a lot of my records, they’re long and there’s a lot of concepts and playing around with stories. This one has none of that. This is nine pretty dense all-instrumental compositions that I wanted to capture and record so I could get out there and play them live for people.”

The album’s mesmeric opener, “Teeth of the Hydra,” a sinuous, Latin-fusion-tinged composition that Vai wrote and recorded with a one-of-a-kind custom guitar he coined the Hydra. But calling the Hydra a mere guitar is selling it way, way, way short. Built in conjunction with the designers at Hoshino and based on a “steampunk motif” idea of Vai’s, the Hydra is a beast of an instrument – a one-bodied, two-headstock-ed, three-neck-ed creature that encompasses, among other things: seven- and 12-string guitars; a four-string bass; sympathetic harp strings; half-fretless necks; single-coil, humbucking, piezo and sustainer pickups; floating and hardtail tremolo bridges; phase splitters; and much, much more. “It’s an incredibly-built machine,” Vai says. “I told the guys at Hoshino, ‘Anything that you think is conventional, don’t do that.’ This was an opportunity to exercise brutal creativity. And they went beyond.”

As did Vai in his performance. Throughout the track he employs the Hydra’s full range of tone and timbres to craft a guitar part that sounds, in its expansiveness and expressiveness, positively alive. “The interesting thing about the song and the guitar is that it all came at the same time,” Vai says. “It was one of those ‘inviolate’ inspirations – boom!”

That said, he continues, “I knew that I needed to create something with the Hydra that sounded like a real piece of music. It couldn’t be just a novelty. Because if you knew what my hands were doing, and how I’m using my left hand to create phrasings that work when I can’t pick a note because my right hand is off somewhere else…my god. But the finished piece had to stand on its own. It couldn’t sound like I was just trying to juggle stuff.”

Over the course of 2021, several of these compositions were shared publicly. Vai composed and recorded the song “Knappsack,” following his shoulder surgery, at a time when his right arm was in a sling (or, as his surgeon, Dr. Knapp, called it, a “knappsack”), and thus was able to use only his left hand when playing the piece. He released a one-handed performance video which can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMjmjXHJoPg.  He says with a laugh, “pretty soon after I started to see some clips of young kids pulling it off, too. It’s really fascinating.”

Like “Knappsack,” Vai released “Candle Power” and an accompanying performance video earlier in 2021. But he added a little something extra to the version that appears on Inviolate, with a newly recorded drum track from fellow Zappa alumnus Terry Bozzio (to that end, additional crack players who lent a hand to the record include bassists Bryan Beller, Philip Bynoe and Henrik Linder, keyboardist David Rosenthal and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta). To screen the video, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fO954zQ3Us.

Or cue up “Apollo in Color,” where Vai’s soaring runs on his Ibanez PIA signature guitar (the newly-designed model’s first appearance on a Vai studio album, it’s worth noting) are surrounded by filigrees of sound played on all manner of exotic stringed instruments. In essence, it all comes down to finding your own voice, and then having the courage and conviction to follow your musical and creative instincts wherever they may take you – something Vai has never been shy about in his playing. “One of the great things about the guitar is you don’t need to be a virtuoso to express your creative vision,” he says. “I mean, Bob Dylan plays the guitar perfectly well for his expression. So does John McLaughlin. You just need to decide how much technique you want or need to get there. For myself, I came out of the chute wanting and needing it all. So, when it comes to my music, I don’t feel like I have to prove anything or conform to anything. I just love to think up creative ideas, and then use whatever skill I have to manifest them.”

“An inviolate inspiration is one that comes to you completely pure,” Vai explains. “It appears almost in its completeness, and there’s a recognition of it as being right for you – perfectly right for you. There’s no excuses in it. There’s no fantasy in it. There’s just a recognition of ‘yes.’ And then you capture that in a way that’s authentic to your unique creativity. Hopefully, that’s what I’ve done with this record.”

STENGAH Release New Single + Video ‘At the Behest of Origins’

STENGAH have released a new single “At the Behest of Origins” via Mascot Records / Mascot Label Group. Watch the video below.

“At the Behest of Origins“ follows the band’s debut single “Above Inhumanity.” The song follows a confrontation between loneliness and fellowship through an imaginary conversation. Expanding about the song, the band say, “It talks about the burden of toxic baggage we carry from the past, and the need to let it go, getting rid of some elapsed existence and escaping from the undertow of life.”

Stream / pre-order here: https://smarturl.it/Stengah

The French quintet has spent the last few years in a state of perpetual evolution, armed with some of the most visceral and forward-thinking riffs and refrains in recent memory. With shades of crunchy post-djent muscularity, these young virtuosos are carving their unique path to metal glory. Both thrillingly primal and ferociously intelligent, this music aspires to enlighten and brutalise in equal measure.

The video for “At the Behest of Origins” is another beautiful cinematic experience from the band, during which follows a man who wakes washed up at the sea edge. The viewer proceeds to observe a ‘conversation’ with a woman as his inner self as they share enigmatic messages and dialogue in a language that is only available as a related poem hosted on the band’s website.

“He talks to her (and so to himself) in a dialogue that we can only read in the poem,” Eliott Williame says. “It is an inner conversation. The thing to understand about this video is that there is only one person. The woman is more like a mirror to him.”

The tender mystery of the story is balanced by a raging storm of scorched-earth post-metal dramatics from the band. The characters venture back towards the sea with the woman, followed by an ominous “dark passenger” – which appeared in the “Above Inhumanity” video. The man needs to go alone, “released from the anxious burden part of himself that she incarnates,” Williame says.

Starring Pascal Duquenne, an actor with Down syndrome, well known for his prominent role in the French-Belgian movie “Le Huitième Jour” from which he won a “Cesar” in 1996. Alongside him is Aliashka Hilsum, a French-Russian “poly-artist”, dancer, musician, actor, and writer, who brought the perfect coalescence to Pascal’s character.

Founded by drummer Eliott Williame, STENGAH has the sound, the smarts, and the ambition to push heavy music ever further into the future. After years of steady evolution and meticulous attention to detail, the band – completed by bassist Benoit Creteur, lead guitarist Maxime Delassus, rhythm guitarist Alex Orta and powerhouse frontman Nicolas Queste – have honed their sound to a state of cutting-edge perfection.

“The music is about (re)connecting with yourself,” says Eliott. “It is about people, their fears, their faiths and their philosophies. How sometimes those things can guide them, and how sometimes they can blind them. It asks, with no judgement, about how odd and how strange the social and emotional behaviours of human beings are. It’s all about the power to believe, in creativity, and consciousness.”

GTARZEE Takes Franz Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ to Whole New Dimension Just in Time for Holiday Season

Following ‘Living a Lie’, the hard rocking debut single by GTARZEE and taken from his upcoming solo album, comes ‘Ave Maria’, one of classical composer Franz Schubert’s most popular songs, which he composed in 1825. The songs melody has haunted Gtarzee for years and now he gets the opportunity to make it one of his own with a surprising treatment, just in time for the season. Gtarzee’s version of Franz Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ is arranged by Gtarzee and drummer Kari Storckovius (from the Finnish-Canadian hard rock band Forth) and they take the song to a whole new dimension with its searing lead guitar, thunderous drums and fat bass. You won’t be disappointed.

Deezer: https://www.deezer.com/us/album/272054522
Tidal: https://listen.tidal.com/album/204734639

The song was mostly recorded by Gtarzee in his home studio and then partly in Soundwell Studio by Valtteri Kallio, who mixed the song and the upcoming album. He also plays a bit of percussion on the song. ‘Ave Maria’ was mastered by Janne Hakanen and it is released by Secret Entertainment.

Who is Gtarzee? Gtarzee is Tim Norrgrann – the solo artist. Tim Norrgrann is best known as the co-founder, composer, occasional lyricist, lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the Finnish-Canadian hard rockers Forth. Co-writing some of their most memorable songs, Tim is building a reputation of writing songs that are melodic, beautiful, powerful and yet easy listening. Tim started playing guitar early on, but switched to bass in the early 2000’s and joined two bands of different musical styles; the pop rock band Beneath the Bed and the progressive rock band Ethereal. Tim switched back to lead guitar after joining the hard rock band Naked Idol in 2008. Continuing his musical adventures Tim picked up the bass again and recorded the bass guitar for the song ‘Voittaja’ by Kultakypärä. The song ‘Voittaja’ was the 2010 theme song for Fintoto (horse racing in Finland). In august 2010 Tim picked up the guitar once again and formed The Roc with Canadian vocalist Brian Forth. A few years later the band changed its name, at the suggestion of Tim, to Forth. Up until today, Forth has released three albums; the debut album “Road Stories” (2014), the sophomore album “Captivity” (2019) and the newly released third album “Forth” (2021). Now the musical adventures of Tim Norrgrann continue alongside of Forth as the solo artist Gtarzee.

Back with a vengeance and hell-bent on destruction, Norwegian death metallers, CADAVER, are back in business and ready to reign. Edder & Bile, the first full length from this band’s new incarnation of Anders Odden’s original, extreme metal vision, was unleashed unto the world in November of 2020 via Nuclear Blast Records. Today, the band releases the music video for “Years Of Nothing” which can be viewed here:

Anders Odden comments, “The release of ‘Years of Nothing’ symbolizes the 2 years we have gone through just now with the most boring end of the world ever. It is also the last Covid-19 styled video we will make. When the world closed down musicians started to jam across the continents and do these split-screen videos from their studio. It’s exactly how we did this. Writing this comment on tour with sold-out shows with MAYHEM right now feels great. May the pandemic be behind us.”

Edder & Bile was produced by the band as well as Adair Daufembach who also handled the engineering. The album was recorded and mixed at Northwood Sound Studios in Hollywood, CA. The album features vocal cameos from death metal icons Kam Lee (MASSACRE) and Jeff Becerra  (POSSESSED) ensuring that this crushing rebirth has underground credentials to spare. The photo for the artwork was taken by Hannah Verbeuren and the layout was created by Justin Bartlett.

COMEBACK KID Release New inSgle ‘Crossed’ Feat. GOJIRA’s Joe Duplantier

COMEBACK KID have revealed a new single and video, “Crossed,” featuring guest vocals from Gojira’s Joe Duplantier. Alongside the riff-heavy first single “No Easy Way Out” and the tone-setting dynamic title track (“Heavy Steps”), “Crossed” will appear on Comeback Kid’s anticipated seventh studio album, Heavy Steps which is set for release on January 21, 2022 via Nuclear Blast Records. Pre-save/order Heavy Steps here: https://bfan.link/CBK-heavysteps-album.ema

In celebration of their forthcoming release, COMEBACK KID has recently partnered with Fanaply, a platform creating eco-friendly Non Fungible Token (NFT) for the biggest names in sports, music and entertainment, to bring fans their first ever eco-friendly NFT. Starting today, fans can enter a competition to earn points for sharing, following and more. On December 10th, 25 of the top point earners will win the NFT. Check it out here: https://bit.ly/3GbNfLs

Says lead vocalist Andrew Neufeld of the new single:
“Crossed is a no frills metallic hardcore track. Lyrically it deals with someone in my life that seemed so far gone and I had to watch them dig themselves further and further into a low and unrealistic place. “Crossed into the void” so to say. We enlisted Joe from Gojira to represent somewhat of an overlord menacing presence in the song. An overshadowing power via his blood curdling scream. This song is direct and to the point about staying in reality and warns of the elements that could bring us further into darkness.”

Comeback Kid fighting against outside pressures and personal demons

Directed by Daniel Prieß and Max Maltais and filmed in Quebec, the video for “Crossed” is a performance style video that sees members of the band fighting against outside pressures and personal demons until they fall into what is visually depicted as “the void”. A true hybrid collaboration that ignited a lot of inspiration and out of the box imagination, the video involved green screening in drummer Loren Legare from Vancouver when he was unable to attend the shoot in Quebec and utilizing a special FX team and editing team in Germany.

“It was wild how this song and video all came together,” Neufeld continues. “So many people from all over the world contributed to this project. On top of the teams used to create the video, the track was recorded in Winnipeg and was mixed in New York by Will Putney. Then Joe [Duplantier] recorded his parts at his house (I believe) in France! This is one of the most fun collaborative projects that I have had the pleasure of working on.”

“Heavy Steps”, the follow up to 2017’s critically acclaimed full-length “Outsider”, sees the hardcore veterans returning to their roots both geographically and musically. Although the members of the band are currently residing on different sides of the country in Vancouver and Toronto, the band decided to write and record their latest effort in the band’s originating city of Winnipeg, Manitoba at Private Ear Recording Studio and once again enlisted the services of producer John Paul Peters (CANCER BATS, PROPAGANDHI) who recorded the band’s debut album “Turn It Around”. In addition to co-production by Peters, on “Heavy Steps”, COMEBACK KID collaborated with prominent Grammy award-winning mixer and long-time fan of the band Will Putney (KNOCKED LOOSE, EVERY TIME I DIE). Featuring a guest appearance by GOJIRA’s Joe Duplantier, “Heavy Steps”is no longer a prerequisite to realizing COMEBACK KID’s influence on modern punk, but a delivery of pure anthemic chaos, sheer speed and force. It is a statement of intent.

“It’s about hitting the ground running, not knowing when or where the ground could break from underneath you.” summarizes Neufeld. “It’s heavy steps on thin ice. ‘Heavy Steps’ on hollow ground.”

Kicking off with the pummeling title track that features punishing bass lines, masterful drumming, sludgy guitar riffs and an infectious singalong chorus, the 11 tracks that is “Heavy Steps” embody all the things that make COMEBACK KID so revered in their genre. It’s fast, fun, beautiful crafted melodic hardcore.
