Brooklyn native Johnny Kelly and NJ guitarist Dan Lorenzo have both played in more than a handful of bands. Lorenzo was the founding member of both Hades and Non-Fiction and most recently Vessel Of Light and Cassius King. He even wrote the music with Bobby Blitz‘ first foray outside of Overkill in 2007 with The Cursed. Kelly first came into prominence with Type O Negative and has also sat behind the kit for Danzig for nearly two decades. Kelly has also performed with BlackLabel Society, A Pale Horse Name Death, and currently Quiet Riot and Silvertomb. Before now the two have never recorded anything together.
“I honestly don’t remember how I first got in contact with Johnny”, Lorenzo stated. “I know we’ve had some email contact together for a while, and I remember originally being flattered that Johnny even know who I was.”
Ron Lipnicki’s first appearance was on the last Hades album DamNation before meeting Bobby Blitz at one of Lorenzo’s Super Bowl Parties. “Ron played drums for me on the last two Vessel Of Light albums plus the first Cassius King album. Ron and I already have drums and guitars to eleven new songs for the next Cassius King album and Ron is in a bunch of bands as well, so I thought rather than overload Ron it might be fun to record with somebody else,” Lorenzo continued. “I texted Bobby Blitz about the idea and Blitz texted back something along the lines of, ‘Kelly would fit perfectly with your riffs’. I sent Johnny a few songs and as soon as he sent one back with his drums I knew Blitz was right. “
Kelly stated, “I liked the riffs that Dan sent me and it’s a great opportunity to get to play with different people.” When Kelly was asked what he brings to the table for Patriarch In Black he came back with, ” I’m not really sure. I consider myself to be an average drummer at best. It must be my charming personality!”
The duo have named this project PATRIARCHS IN BLACK. Lorenzo wrote the music and plays guitar, Kelly is behind the kit.
PATRIARCHS IN BLACK will have multiple vocalists. Karl Agell ( former COC) , Dewey Bragg ( Kill Devil Hill) Rob Dukes ( former Exodus), Mark Morales ( Sons of Texas) and John Kosco ( Dropbox) have each already agreed to sing at least one song.
When pressed for a description of how the music sounds Kelly said, “All roads lead to Black Sabbath!” Patriarchs In Black will release their first single Demon of Regret with Kelly, Lorenzo, Karl Agell on vocals and Dave Neabore (Dog Eat Dog) on bass soon.
Morten Veland (SIRENIA, MORTEMIA and founder of TRISTANIA) is about to release the 6th MORTEMIA single from ‘The Pandemic Pandemonium Sessions’. The song features Brittney Slayes(Unleash the Archers) on guest vocals, and is due for release on the 10th of December 2021 via all digital platforms. The track is entitled ‘My Demons and I’.
After 11 years of silence Norwegian multi-instrumentalist, producer and artist Morten Veland is once more active with his solo project Mortemia, this time with a brand new concept. ‘The Pandemic Pandemonium Sessions’ is a series of singles released on a monthly basis, each song featuring a well known and highly profiled singer in metal. Madeleine Liljestam (Eleine),Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion, Ayreon, MaYaN, The Gentle Storm, Dark Horse White Horse), Alessia Scolletti (Temperance) and Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre of Tragedy, ex-Leaves Eyes) and Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum, The dark side of the moon) were the five first special guests on this project. And now for the sixth single Morten has teamed up with Brittney Slayes (Unleash the Archers).
Morten Veland:
“I am proud and honored to introduce my friend Brittney Slayes as my special guest for ‘The Pandemic Pandemonium Sessions’. The sixth song is entitled ‘My Demons and I’, and will be available on all digital platforms on the 10th of December 2021. Me and Brittney toured together back in 2016, when Sirenia and Unleash the Archers toured Europe along with 3 more bands. Brittney instantly impressed me on all levels with her incredible vocal performance, hard working ethics and kind personality. Brittney has an extremely huge vocal range and a very powerful voice that I instantly thought would fit perfectly for this song. I feel truly privileged and thankful to have Brittney onboard this project, and I am really looking forward to sharing this song with you all. This song is definitely one of the heaviest songs I have ever written.”
Brittney Slayes:
“The second Morten reached out to me to collaborate. I knew it was a no brainer. We’ve toured together in the past and he is such a rad, talented guy; I was honoured to be included! Then when I heard the song I knew immediately I had made the right choice. It is super catchy and yet still really heavy, signature Morten writing style, I was very excited to get in the studio and see what I could do! I can’t wait for you all to hear it!”

More about Joel Maitoza and THE FREQUENCY CONSPIRACY
Joel Maitoza, former drummer for national recording/touring artists 24-7 Spyz, Seventrain and Shockhead has branched out to record his self-titled debut album with his new project THE FREQUENCY CONSPIRACY. The songwriting is an eclectic mix of Rock, Funk, Metal and Soul, staying true to his roots. As a contributing songwriter and producer for many of the artists he’s recorded with over the past 35 years, the time has come for Joel to record and release his own original material worldwide.
Joel explains, “The Frequency Conspiracy isn’t a band exactly, but a collaboration between myself and other musical friends who I’ve always wanted to work with. This project gives me the opportunity to create music with artists from all over the world. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to write, record and release an album of songs where I’m performing the majority of the instrumentation. The original material is basically a collection of riffs, ideas and songs that I’ve written over the past 20 years. When I write a song, I hear the completed version including vocal melodies in my head, so I need to record it to wipe the slate clean per se. Writing, producing and recording my own album is a major challenge and that’s exciting to me. It keeps my creative juices flowing and I can work at my own pace. I’m primarily a drummer and songwriter that can play a little guitar, bass and keyboards. I can’t sing very well or play a guitar solo to save my life, so I’ll be having some friends making cameo appearances on many of the songs. This project is very personal to me and close to my heart. It’s something I need to complete in order to move on to the next chapter of my career. If people dig it, I’ll keep writing, creating and recording music. If not, I can at least say I accomplished what I originally set out to achieve. Either way, I’m excited to finally have the opportunity to share it with all of you.”
Aside from recording 13 original songs for his debut album, Joel has also been busy recording a separate album of cover tunes he’s putting his own stamp on titled Quarantine Covers. Both albums are currently being recorded at Exum Studios by Scott Exum (Stabbing Westward, Unwritten Law), Room 9 Studios by Jerry Whiting and AJP Studios by Alex Pappas (Finch).
Boston-bred progressive, symphonic metal band WILDERUN have released the third single from their upcoming studio album, ‘Epigone’. The new single is a radio edit of the track “Identifier” , and is accompanied by a performance video from the band. ‘Epigone’ will see a January 7th, 2022 release via Century Media.
Speaking on their new single, the band shares:
“It didn’t take us long to know we wanted to release this song as a single. With ‘Identifier’ we wanted to find a way to weave classic Wilderun orchestrations with newly discovered synths and sound design, while simultaneously rejuvenating our use of folk instrumentation all in one song. We took a deep dive into our own experiences as a band and resurfaced with a new perspective that’s both daunting and invigorating.”
With Epigone, Boston-bred aural imaginauts WILDERUN take a deeper and darker step beyond their expansive, prog-leaning metal scores that so skillfully came together on 2019’s Veil of Imagination. The result is a record that is at once grandiose, complex, sophisticated, and unexpectedly human. “This is certainly a “meta” record for me,” states guitarist and vocalist Evan Berry. “It’s the record that has the most to do with the artistic process.” Indeed, the nine-track-long offering: beginning with the haunting acoustic prelude, “Exhaler” and ending with a twenty-minute, four-part epic composition, “Distraction I-IV”, Epigone is nothing short of a journey into expression and ambition. It has all the earmarks that have made WILDERUN a revelation unto themselves.
“This record has a different kind of inner turmoil than Veil,” says bassist and composer Dan Muller. “So much of that album was focused on the past and reminiscing on the progression from childhood to adulthood, and had a brighter, more flowery texture to it. This one is darker, and to me feels more introspective.” Admittedly, the universal pause and the frustration that came with the onset of a global pandemic of 2020 weighed heavily on the writing. “It was a frustrating time,” says Dan. “Things were starting to move in a direction that we had wanted them to for a while. We had signed to Century Media and were playing bigger shows like the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise. Then, suddenly, it felt like everything was ripped away from us. For me, that made it the hardest record we’ve ever had to write.”
Berry describes the arrangement process for Epigone as “solitary”, largely due to the Covid-restricted universe the band found itself in. Ideas were shuttled back and forth between members, and the band frustratingly never had the opportunity to meet as a whole before tracking commenced in early 2021. And with traveling being too risky at the time, Wayne had to do all of his recording and orchestrating out of his home studio in California, while the rest of the band tracked in Syracuse, NY. In spite of that isolation, tracks like the driving “Passenger” speak volumes of WILDERUN’s increasingly canny sonic reach as soaring, cinematic orchestrations flirt with Berry’s death metalized inclinations. According to Berry, even WILDERUN’s flawlessly integrated orchestrations were pushed in new directions. Guitarist and composer Wayne Ingram (who has worked for noted film composer Hans Zimmer’s Bleeding Fingers Company) focused on innovative and challenging compositions while Muller pushed his synth work to create a sense of atmosphere the band’s prior work only hinted at. The album’s mix by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Arch Enemy) sets the album’s standard to masterpiece proportions.
“There’s always a deep appreciation for the vibe and the atmosphere of folk and the heaviness of metal,” says Dan, “I think for us it comes down to this organic, esoteric atmosphere that incorporates a lot of different things.” That aesthetic is most pronounced when it comes to some of the album’s actual instrumentation. “This is probably the biggest number of folk instruments we’ve ever had on a record,” notes Dan. “Sometimes it’s prominent. Sometimes it’s layered. There’s fewer keys and more acoustic passages. It’s a little more earthy and a little less theater.”
When it comes to scoring soundtracks for the theater of the mind, WILDERUN isn’t merely pushing boundaries, they’re writing sublime symphonies and setting the standard in the process. “At its core, WILDERUN is escapist, transformative,” says Dan. “Our criteria is very simple: As a listener, does it put me in a place that’s better than where I am now? Even though the music and lyrics are very introspective, this could be anyone’s story.”
WILDERUN is Evan Anderson Berry (vocals, guitars, piano), Dan Müller (bass, synths, orchestrations), Jon Teachey (drums), Joe Gettler (lead guitar), and Wayne Ingram (orchestrations).
The success and acclaim of “You Can’t Kill My Rock N’ Roll” inspired HARDCORE SUPERSTAR significantly and writing for the next record enthusiastically started whilst out on tour. Connecting with so many fans, old and new has helped to influence the shape and sound of the new record, with Adde commenting that the new album:
“Feels like the record we should have released after the Black album”
The new album “Abrakadabra” will be released worldwide March 25th 2022, containing 10 hard hitting songs exploding with riffs, attitude, intensity and that magical feeling you get when work is over and the weekend is here. This is an album for the fans and best shared with great friends, cold beers and very loud speakers!!
Recorded in 2020 and early 2021 at both Österlyckan and Bombastik in Musikens Hus – Gothenburg, the decision was made early on to once again work with Johan Reiven, who was responsible for production duties on the bands “Black Album”. Adde states:
“Working with Johan was like stepping back in time, there’s a shared intensity and commitment to excel that collectively drives us and ultimately brings out the best in us all… I am 100% happy with the result”.
This shared intensity can be heard on every one of the tracks from the defiantly rebellious “Dreams In Red” through to the bar soaked philosophy of “One For All” and the thundering powerhouse that is “Catch Me If You Can”.
Abrakadabra is uncomplicated, Rock N’ Roll escapism and entertainment at its best… sprinkled with a little bit of magic for good measure.
