They are a band known for crossing borders, overstepping genre taboos and keeping the (metal) world in suspense: Today, French avantgarde black metallers CELESTE take their immersive experience one step closer to the edge: January 28th will see the release of the band’s new longplayer “Assassine(s)”, produced by Chris Edrich (GOJIRA, TESSERACT, THE OCEAN, LEPROUS)  and a long awaited follow-up to 2017’s “Infidèle(s)”. With their unique mix of black metal, sludge and post hardcore, and over 500 shows played since their inception in 2005, CELESTE have cemented their status as one of France’s most important underground acts, and now deliver the first single off their upcoming piece of art, “Assassine(s)”:
Driven by almost djenty rhythms, the band instantly prove their subtlety on this first excerpt ‘Des Torrents De Coups’ and brings overwhelming emotions through bleak yet occasionally blissful soundscapes.

“We’re glad to unleash our first single”,CELESTE states. “This track is the first one we’ve started writing for the new album, but it’s also one of the last we’ve finished. It’s pretty representative of the reflexion we had all along the creation process of ‘ASSASSINE(S)’, I hope you’ll enjoy the new sonorities and our new approach of the songwriting. This epic song is coming with the videoclip it deserves, ‘Des Torrents de coups’ is the first part of a video triptych to be released in the coming months, produced in collaboration with video artist Gregoire Orio. Those videoclips totally emphasize our well know imagery.”

Witness the artistic black and white music video for ‘Des Torrents De Coups’ directed by Grégoire Orio here:

“Assassine(s)” is now available for pre-order in various formats: https://celeste.bfan.link/assassine-s

As Genoa-based desert rockers, TEMPLE OF DEIMOS, just recently announced their worldwide signing with Argonauta Records, today they have shared some hotly anticipated album infos as well as a first song taken from their upcoming full-length record! It’s the trio’s first album in 8 long years.

Following their latest, 2014- album, Work To Be Done, which was lauded by both fans and critics alike, TEMPLE OF DEIMOS are currently gearing up for the long awaited release of Heading To Saint Reaper, the band’s third album, which will be out on February 25, 2022. The Italian stoner rock trio, who was formed in 2006, channels the flavor of groups such as QOTSA, Kyuss as well as Red Fang, and is inspired by the Palm Desert and 90’s grunge scene. Creating a heavy fuzz yet psychedelic desert rock sound in a distinctive shape, the band’s upcoming album will even see them stepping out of their comfort zone, ultimately cementing their own and unique character.

Give ear, as today TEMPLE OF DEIMOS are premiering a first song alongside a video clip for “Bad Time Choices”:

“The song is about complicated relationships that lead to make ‘’Bad Choices‘’ and could hurts dear’s feelings, the consequent guilt when the mind is clear, is the fulcrum and story behind the track”, vocalist and guitarist Fabio Speranza explains.

“This first single, more than others songs, showcases an overview of the album’s musical influences and introduces the listener to the main concept: When time flows inexorably and quickly, and we just rush behind it thinking we can control everything but it’s only an illusion.

We are very proud of our new album ‘’Heading To Saint Reaper’’, and we can’t wait for you to hear the full album!”

Heading To Saint Reaper was recorded, mixed and mastered by Mattia Cominotto at Green Fog Studio in Genoa, and will be released on February 25, 2022 through Argonauta Records with a pre-sale and more details to follow soon. Meanwhile, the band will present some new album material live on stage soon, when they will play their first gig in two years this Sunday, November 20th at Sudore Club in Genoa, Italy. Finnish heavy rockers ROUGH GRIND have released their first single from the upcoming new album, “Hardened” (Inverse Records). The single hit the airwaves on 17 November, while the album is due on 28 January 2022.

The hard-stompin’ new single, titled “The Road Song”, is a wild run down the memory lane to the world of action movie classics and a powerful reminder that high-quality hard rock doesn’t necessarily have to be out for blood – gasoline will do just fine. Guaranteed to earn unwary listeners a speeding ticket or ten, the new piece makes it very clear that Rough Grind have cranked their songwriting game up several notches.

Finnish power trio RAT BOOGIE released a new single and music video Son of a Gun. It’s the first release after their debut album Bad Gravity which was released in 2020 by Finnish record label Secret Entertainment.

Mika Säkkinen comments:
“The song ‘Son of a gun’ sheds some ironic light on the aggression and coldness traditionally associated with being a man. And, of course, this is done best with an aggressive, fast-paced rocker! In the video, the views through a magic telescope reveal a strange blend of hopes, expectations and dreams clashing with reality.”

Hailing from Oulu, northern Finland, Rat Boogie is a trio that tastefully melts different influences into a tightly rocking, original package. In the core there is always the organic live playing that gives the flowing melodies a solid backbone. With an amply aggressive but breathing sound, Rat Boogie adventures inside the rock’n roll nucleus, celebrating all the good things that can be achieved with guitars, bass and drums.

With long musical experience in Finnish bands such as EBPSATRFM, The Blaster Master and Laid Back Townies, Rat Boogie makes memorable melodies, while rocking tightly in the trio format.

Finnish funeral doom icons SHAPE OF DESPAIR return from the wintry Nordic gloom on their new album, Return to the Void. Between the success of the majestically downtrodden Monotony Fields (2015) and today, the members of SHAPE OF DESPAIR have been composing (glacially) and otherwise ensconced writing/performing with their other projects like FINNTROLL, IMPALED NAZARENE, THROES OF DAWN, and COUNTING HOURS. The Finns have never been or found the need to be prolific, however. The race into the cold darkness is a contemplatively unhurried task. Return to the Void is musically and thematically that same journey, one of perpetual solitude and aching hopelessness, driven straight into the heart of frigid twilight. As ever, this is cheerless music for sunless days.

“Not long after Monotony Fields, I started composing for Return to the Void,” says guitarist/founding member Jarno Salomaa. “At first, the title song sounded too primitive. I thought I would make a solo album out of it, but after a while, the song reminded me of older RAVEN material. Naturally and eventually, it started to feel like a SHAPE OF DESPAIR song.”

SHAPE OF DESPAIR was formed out of the ashes of RAVEN in Helsinki in 1998. Actually, the transformation into the present-day moniker wasn’t as violent as it sounds. A simple name change—initiated by Salomaa—coincided with the Finns’ developing predilection for protracted if icy metal. SHAPE OF DESPAIR’s grand debut, Shades of… (2000), was proof that the fledgling sextet’s stately doom was already ascendant. From there, the Helsinkians morphed in membership but continued their funereal march into legend with Angels of Distress (2001) and Illusion’s Play (2004) before hibernating for almost a decade. While Return to the Void is the natural follow-up to Monotony Fields and represents over six years of songwriting development, the main narrative (and indeed the timely return of drummer Samu Ruotsalainen) is rooted in the past.

“Return to the Void isn’t the follow-up to Monotony Fields in the traditional sense,” Salomaa says. “As stated, the songwriting goes way back to the first music we put together for RAVEN. I will say my approach has changed after all these years of making music. I found new and different ways to shape the arrangements and my compositions. What matters most, I think, is that it still has the SHAPE OF DESPAIR atmosphere.”

Return to the Void is no doubt SHAPE OF DESPAIR. From the void-gaze of “Dissolution” and gelid beauty of “Reflection in Slow Time” to the collapsing cathedral in “Forfeit” and the void-fall that is the stunning title track, the Finns have outdone themselves, overcoming the heights of previous lighthouse tracks “Woundheir,” “Angels of Distress,” and “Sleep Mirrored” with surprising ease. Funeral doom is often narrow in scope, but Return to the Void defiantly opposes that with its massively scaled and forlornly inspired valleys and angelic (powered by Natalie Koskinen’s empyrean vocals) peaks. Coupled with Henri Koivula’s caliginous lyrics, SHAPE OF DESPAIR provides a masterclass display of a genre expansive and filmic.

“Return to the Void is a title we thought would best describe the album,” says Koivula. “It is a return for us in many ways. We were heading [musically] towards early SHAPE OF DESPAIR. Plus, Samu’s back in the band. Overall, my lyrics have a red line through them—a sense of solitude and depression. The state where you find that everything has lost its meaning. There is no past or future, only this one moment drifting near the firmament.”

The Return to the Void project started in 2020 and continued through May 2021. Production duties were wrested from the previous producer Max Kostermaa and in-sourced to the band directly. Ruotsalainen, Salomaa, Koivula, and Miika Niemelä engineered, respectively, at Beat Domination Studios, D-Studios, and Doom Cave Studios. The group also looked inside their ranks for mixing, handing the job off to [drummer] Ruotsalainen (FINNTROLL, METSATÖLL). The mastering was given to award-winning ace Svante Forsbäck (VOLBEAT, RAMMSTEIN) at Chartmakers West in Espoo. If the previous SHAPE OF DESPAIR  productions were huge, Return to the Void is unfathomably massive. One listen to “Solitary Downfall” and the album’s crushing egress “The Inner Desolation,” and it’s readily apparent that SHAPE OF DESPAIR have crafted a temple of sound to ruminate the cruelty of existence.

“We recorded the album on our own, which allowed us the freedom to record whenever and however long we wanted,” says Salomaa. ”Everything was done in late winter, with the mixing taking place between February and March of 2021. We had a couple of weekends to mix with Samu, but most of it was done without us. The mastering was then finalized in May 2021. [The sound is] mainly raw but still heavy. The main focus was to keep our sound world intact. I think this album sounds the most accurate we’ve ever wanted our albums to sound.”

SHAPE OF DESPAIR’s next steps are to release Return to the Void via Season of Mist. The striking cover art via long-time design partner and silent member Mariusz Krystew (David Galas, Thor’s Hammer) is yet again a reminder that the Finns are as visually engaging as they are compositionally and lyrically. That they mixed old and new for Return to the Void is proof that there’s purpose and meaning to Salomaa’s ill-lit aesthetic. Once the album is released and protocols pending, Shape of Despair hope to hit the road where they’ll pontificate their wintry despondency from the stage to audiences near and far.

IGORRR Deliver Live Video ‘Opus Brain’, Band Introduces New Members, U.S. Tour Kicks Off on February 17th

IGORRR have released “Opus Brain,” a fitting document to the bands atmospheric and experimental live performance. The video was filmed live during the band’s performance at Pol’and’Rock Festival on July 30th, 2021, and comes off the 2017 album Savage Sinusoid, deemed by Metal Injection as “an awe-inspiring work of chaos and technicality.”

Watch “Opus Brain” here:

Led by architect Gautier Serre, IGORRR welcomes two new vocalists, Aphrodite Patoulidou and JB Le Bail. Rounded out by drummer Sylvain Bouvier and guitarist Martyn Clément, IGORRR has become something of a collective, rather than the work of one man alone, which has further broadened the scope of Gautier’s music without sacrificing integrity. “I just want to make the music I love, without asking myself if it’s gonna be too complex or too far from what people like. No restrictions, like a big party with metalheads, electronics nerds, classical and baroque-heads and gypsy violinists getting drunk and joining together to bring the best of every genre!“

US fans will finally get to enjoy the genre-mashing sounds of IGORRR as the band lands on US soil this February.
