The wait is over! Yesterday, June 11th, Texas’ electronic rockers CEDARS released their new album “Cowards” via Gruene Records.
Celebrating the release, the band has revealed the concept of the album.
“Cowards, at its core, is an album about choosing yourself, even in the face of great consequences. So often we find ourselves in situations or systems that ask us to minimize ourselves or our desires or even our needs, but there comes a point where we have to make some really tough choices: do we continue to support the system that is crushing us and building itself on our backs, or do we honour our own still, small voice? The album is the story of finding ourselves in a season of life where those choices were very pressing, and very loud, with very real consequences. There are times when death is necessary to make room for the new, the better, and sometimes the knife is in our own hands. The album, though full of heavy moments, is also woven with bright strands of hope and light, the kind that can only come after great loss and struggle. How quietly we go to war.”

CEDARS is an electronic rock band from central Texas whose music incorporates the DIY ethos of bands like The Pixies and PJ Harvey, the haunting atmospheres of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, and the infectious grooves of MuteMath. Marta Gabriel’s “Count Your Blessings” music video, has just been published by the NWOTHM Full Albums Youtube channel.
The song, which is a MALTEZE cover, is taken taken from “Metal Queens” – CRYSTAL VIPER front woman’s first solo album. The album, which is coming out next month on Listenable Records, is a collection of exclusive cover songs, and a tribute to the female heavy metal and hard rock singers of the ’80s. “It’s a celebration and tribute to some of my favorite female vocalists, and a solid piece of heavy metal that fans might enjoy even if they don’t know original versions of those songs”, says Gabriel. “It’s not a random collection of covers – we made sure that it sounds like one big piece, like a real album, and it has this taking-no-prisoners attitude”, she adds.
The album features Marta Gabriel on vocals and bass guitar, Eric Juris from CRYSTAL VIPER on guitars, and Cederick Forsberg from CRYSTAL VIPER and BLAZON STONE on drums.

Bay Area metal titans MACHINE HEAD have released a 3-track digital single titled “Arrows In Words From The Sky” today. The release features 3 new songs, “Rotten,” “Arrows In Words From The Sky” and the single “Become The Firestorm.”
Written against the backdrop of a once-in-a-century pandemic, and the long and painful death of frontman / guitarist Robb Flynn’s mother, these 3 songs represent one of the darkest chapters in MACHINE HEAD history.
And while songs like blistering opening track “Become The Firestorm” seethe with an apocalyptic anger, the 3-track single closes with one of the most transcending songs in the MH arsenal in title track “Arrows In Words From The Sky“
Flynn states: “The lyrics to these songs took to me places inside I didn’t want to go, from the bile and negativity on “Rotten,” to nothing-will-beat-me-down fury of “Become The Firestorm,” to the title track “Arrows” being one of the saddest songs I’ve ever written, yet somehow has the power to lift me up out of what was a very dark time in my life. My hope is that by sharing these dark experiences with the Head Cases of the world, it can save someone else out of that same dark place.”
“Arrows In Words From The Sky” follows a string of tracks MACHINE HEAD has released since 2018’s “Catharsis,” including the recent single “My Hands Are Empty.”
Norway’s progressive metal legends ENSLAVED have travelled a long way since their origins in the extreme black metal scene of the early 1990s. This week sees them premiere a new live video performance of ‘Sacred Horse‘, taken from their forthcoming package of live releases, Cinematic Tour 2020, out June 25th. For Enslaved, this performance represents a cherished career zenith, unapologetically translating their extreme metal roots into grandiose psychedelia.
‘Sacred Horse’ (live) is taken from their upcoming Cinematic Tour 2020 recording: The Rise of Ymir (Verftet Online Festival 2020). Despite being locked down in space, Enslaved take us on a tour through time, with classic tracks and fan favourites resurrected and revitalised by a formidable and accomplished live performance.
Many great bands struggle to walk the hard road between artistic evolution and staying true to themselves, but on ‘Sacred Horse‘ and The Rise of Ymir, Enslaved show how inspired composition and musicianship can bring an audience along with them, from the most abrasive depths to the most absorbing heights extreme metal has to offer.
Enslaved’s Grutle Kjellson commented, “Sacred Horse is probably one of our proudest moments in our now three-decade long career, and that song pretty much sums up what Enslaved is all about; energy. A very aggressive song, yet also dynamic and mellow. Besides, it’s always a delightful experience to perform it on stage and to see how our audience absorbs it and enjoys it. We’ve even seen people crying at the front row while playing this song, and of course beholding our fans unleashing such emotions, really lifts the whole experience to a pretty much divine level! Obviously, performing it without an audience at an online show wasn’t an easy task, but the memories of our previous endeavours playing it alongside our fans, got us through. Thanks for watching!”
