VOLA Release Video For New Single ’24 Light-Years’

VOLA are set to release their new album ‘Witness’ on May 21st via Mascot Records. Today the band unveils a video for their new single ’24 Light-Years’, watch it below. The video is created by Nicolai Mogensen & Anne Nørkjær Bang.

Nicolai Mogensen about the video:

“We are very excited to share the music video for ’24 Light-Years’ with you. This song is one of my favourites from the forthcoming album, and it has been such a joy working on the track from a visual perspective. Anne and I have been making videos together for a while. We like to try out new techniques and explore different styles of drawing and animation. For this one, we went for a more digital, spacy, and fluent look and vibe. Anne has made the drawings for the video while I worked with the animation. We still consider ourselves novices in this field, but we put a lot of time and love into this little piece of work. We really hope that you enjoy it!”

The album was produced by the band and it was mixed and mastered by the Grammy nominated Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amaranthe). Each song presents its unique characters, some are fictional, and real events inspire some. “24 Light-years,” follows someone searching for a vanished relative – are they lost/dead? How deep does the story dive? “Freak,“ delves into insecurity and power, “Napalm,” represents a failed relationship and the remorse and regret that follows, whilst “Stone Leader Falling Down,” highlights bullying and the misuse of power and “Inside Your Fur,” explores the ills of nostalgia.

“Future Bird” is a heartbreaking story based on real events. “I got the idea for those lyrics after having read a Facebook post by a couple who had lost an unborn child. They told about the pregnancy and their emotions directed towards this human being they never got to meet.” He continues, “The “future bird” is a metaphor for the child who never got the chance to grow up and make a mark on the world.”

“These Black Claws” is a metaphor for addiction and the experience of being pulled back through the darkness and features electronic/hip-hop duo, SHAHMEN. Bless (vocalist in SHAHMEN) contributed all the lyrics for his verse. Mygind says, “I think his vocals contribute with a demonic vibe while adding groove to the track. The beat in the verse is very hip hop inspired, so putting rap on top feels like fulfilling the potential of that part.” The lyrics “One straw in the drain/One word that you failed to sustain” echoes over and over before the band rip into a Panzer heavy attack as the song spirals deep into a suffocating heaviness.

VOLA are Asger Mygind (vocals/guitar), Martin Werner (keys), Nicolai Mogensen (bass) and Adam Janzi (drums).

PAUL GILBERT Announces New Album ‘Werewolves of Portland’, New Video ‘Argument About Pie’ Available

Guitar virtuoso PAUL GILBERT will release his brand-new album, Werewolves of Portland, on 4 June 2021 via The Players Club (Steve Lukather, Robby Krieger, Michael Landau, Tommy Emmanuel). To celebrate this, Gilbert has also revealed the video for the first taste, “Argument About Pie,” which you can watch below.

Now he has his 16th solo studio album ready to prove to everyone that, astonishingly, this master continues to raise the bar on what he can achieve. With the international lockdown putting the world on hold, Gilbert decided to, rather than wait, he got on with playing all the instruments on the album himself. “It took me about six months to think of it, but it finally occurred to me that I could play all the instruments myself. I’ve always loved playing drums, and I can play bass and keyboards well enough to get the job done,” he says.

Talking about the first song released from the album, he explains, “most of my titles come from the lyrics that I write in order to get a melody going. I’ve even printed the lyrics in the liner notes of the album, so you can ‘read along’ as you listen to the music. “‘Argument About Pie’ is one of my favourites. This lyric came from my pre-lockdown experiences of stopping by my local pie shop for a slice of strawberry rhubarb. Amidst all the brewing angst in Portland, the pie shop was a place where everyone was happy and at peace. Eating pie seemed to be something that everyone could agree on. Since my mind has the habit of searching for contrasts, I started to wonder what people might be against eating pie.”

When it comes to writing, Gilbert reveals that surprisingly it isn’t the guitar that provides the impetus. “Mostly, I write by singing. I use the lyrics to give myself a structure where I can hang the notes. Once the melody is long enough to have some life in it, my musical instincts can take over. I can often finish the song without needing more words. But if I get stuck, lyrics will always get me going again.”  He continues, “My guitar can hit the high notes! It’s amazing to have the physical limitations of my voice… gone! The challenge is to be expressive, with all the slides, vibrato, dynamics, and tones that a voice has. I’m constantly learning vocal melodies on guitar, so I get used to playing with the kind of expression that singers have. “

Recorded at Opal Studio in Portland with co-producer and engineer Kevin Hahn, Gilbert pulled out some of his current favourite guitars for the job. “I mostly used my Ibanez Fireman guitars,” he says. “I’ve been collecting vintage Ibanez guitars lately, too. I brought some models from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s like the Ibanez Artist, Roadstar II and Ghostrider. I also brought and modified a ’60s Epiphone Olympic. I used to play those in the early days of Racer X, so it was fun to have a guitar that reminded me of my early shredder style.”

The album title’s inspiration partly comes from the Warren Zevon song, “Werewolves Of London”. “I live in Portland and thought it would be funny to substitute the name of my much lesser-known city. My original idea for the ‘Werewolves’ was just the guys in my band and me. When we play music, it is our version of ‘howling at the moon’. Unfortunately, Portland has become more ‘known’ in the last year for events that are pretty sad to watch. And ‘Werewolves’ could take on other meanings that I certainly hadn’t anticipated. But the title, to me, still has a musical meaning.”

The song titles are somewhat quirky and certainly catch the imagination. There are not one but two songs about the Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich. “A Thunderous Ovation Shook the Columns” is about the audience’s reaction to the debut performance of Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony. “They liked his Symphony! So, fortunately, did Joseph Stalin, who had made no secret that he did NOT approve of some of Shostakovich’s earlier music. ‘Professorship At The Leningrad Conservatory’ is my lyric about that story, and I built the melody from there.”

Gilbert is a formidable force. From his time in LA metallers Racer X to helping form Mr. Big, one of the era’s most revered names. His distinguished solo career has seen him putting out 15 acclaimed records and has been asked to guest on albums from such diverse names as Todd Rundgren, Bowling For Soup, Glenn Hughes and MC Lars. He also toured with Joe Satriani and John Petrucci in 2007 (G3) and two years later with Richie Kotzen and George Lynch (Guitar Generation). This is not to mention a lengthy tenure as a much-in-demand teacher and instructor. This began when he was still a teenager, being hired in 1985 by the prestigious Guitar Institute Of Technology (GIT) in Los Angeles.

“I didn’t become a musician to shout my ideas, complaints, or philosophies at anyone. I love music because of the music. So I love my method of using my inner rants as scaffolding to build melodies. This scaffolding can then be pulled away to unveil some pure emotional music. This works perfectly for me and hopefully for my listeners. “I need to be able to visualize the look and sound of my fretboard well enough to play accurately in my mind. It’s almost like real air guitar! Then when I actually go to play the music, I’ve got a good chance of having my melodic intentions come true. And that’s about the best feeling in the world.”

THE OCEAN To Perform ‘Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic’ In Its Entirety For Upcoming Livestream Show

Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: The Ocean. Leave a comment

On Thursday, March 25th at 12PM PST//3PM EST//8PM CET, THE OCEAN will host a special livestream show, featuring a performance of 2018’s Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic in its entirety!

The Ocean comments: “We will be performing ‘Phanerozoic I’ in its entirety on Thursday, March 25, 8PM CET – streamed live from Pier2, a shipyard in the port of Bremen, Germany.
Please join to make this evening special – it will be a show without any audience in the live room. We’ll be playing for you guys at your homes, wherever they are.
After more than a year of absence from playing music, we’re stoked to be getting back together to rehearse and perform – even more so, because we have a new space which we are currently transforming into our own recording studio. This is the beginning of a new era for us. We’ve battled against the inertia of 2020 with writing a whole bunch of new material, and the result is that we’ve got 2 new albums ready to record once the construction work is done.
For now, there are no plans to make this available online after the event, nor to do this again, so don’t miss out on this.
If this goes well, we’ll promise to do something for ‘Phanerozoic II‘ a bit later in the year. ;)”

Purchase your ticket at: club100-bremen.de/the-ocean. Ticketholders will be able to replay the full stream for 48 hours from the start of the show.

Last year, The Ocean released the follow-up to Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic: Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic – the band’s most successful album to-date, with the highest chart entries in their history (including a phenomenal Top 10 entry in the Official German Album Charts!). Tracked in Iceland, Spain and Germany and produced by esteemed studio guru Jens Bogren, Phanerozoic II is underpinned by some of the most imaginative and challenging music that The Ocean have made yet. Divided into two sections – Mesozoic and Cenozoic – the album once again showcases the detail and depth that have become two of The Ocean‘s most enduring trademarks. HELLOWEEN Announce New Studio Album “Helloween” For June 18th

Posted in: Int. News, News. Tagged: HELLOWEEN. Leave a comment

Forget HELLOWEEN – Here comes HELLOWEEN
This is the beginning of a new time calculation: »Please stick together!«

This was the ardent wish of thousands of fans calling out to Andi Deris, Michael Kiske,Michael Weikath, Kai Hansen, Markus Grosskopf, Sascha Gerstner and Dani Löble during the PUMPKINS UNITED WORLD TOUR – and their dream has come true! With the upcoming album, simply titled HELLOWEEN, the band opens a new chapter after 35 years of a glorious career. The future of one of the most influential German metal bands from now on will feature three singers. Originally planned for the live performances only, it was the birth of a unique seven piece metal alliance.

Dani Löble: „This record is the coronation of the PUMPKINS UNITED journey! Still, until  today I am fascinated by the different character traits and facets of the HELLOWEEN history. Per example the legendary voices of Michi, Andi and Kai. To enjoy them now together on one record, under one flag is the ultimate HELLOWEEN experience”. It is therefore not surprising that the pre-release single “Skyfall” (out on april, 2nd), a 12 minute epos written by Kai Hansen, has the long yearned “Keeper-vibe” – even if the long player can by no means be limited to it. “Skyfall” implies the musical arch which will be loved by fans of every era. This first album of a new age is taking the fans from unforgettable memories of the fifteen studio records and four live CD’s to new adventures.

“Skyfall” begins with a bang. The epic track describes an alien landing on earth and a dramatic chase while Kiske, Deris and Hansen duel with each other in a breathtaking manner and create a vocal broadband adventure. Produced by Martin Häusler, it is the most elaborate video clip in the history of the band; shown with 3-D animation and having a cinematic look, this video is a real high end experience.

The base of this milestone album was already erected in the studio: using the original drum kit of Ingo Schwichtenberg, the recording was done with the same modulators at the Hamburg HOME studios where back then „Master Of The Rings“, „The Time Of The Oath“ and „Better Than Raw“ were recorded. Completely analog and under the eyes of long term producer Charlie Bauerfeind and co-producer Dennis Ward, the UNITED impact travelled to New York and got the final mix in the Valhalla Studios of Ronald Prent (Iron Maiden, Def Leppard,  Rammstein). „After 30 years with the different line ups of the band I really thought I was well prepared for another extreme challenge, but I was wrong! My expectations were highly exceeded in every way with this super-sized creativity package”tells us Bauerfeind.

Besides all musical competence, it is also the special enthusiasm that defines HELLOWEEN. Michael Weikath characterizes in his own way: „It is the incomprehensible encounter of seven musicians who are working as friends and even family and created something that no one would have thought it could be possible. It is like awaking from a sleep but still being in an incredible dream“. Returnee Kai Hansen reflects: „Being in the studio with my old companions after 30 years was very emotional for me. But at the same time it was a completely different experience with the “new” boys. The collaboration of different songwriters and strong characters made the album very special: a unique mix with reminiscences from all chapters of the band’s history. HELLOWEEN is a big part of my life and I am looking forward to celebrating the songs live for and with our fans“! From another perspective Markus Grosskopf agrees: „For me, being one of the last ‘survivors‘ who played every note from the beginning, it was a fantastic experience and a very emotional process. I think everyone can hear it on this album. I love it“.

With all this brand new material an album has been created, an album that is set apart from the digital mainstream and showing the essence of the band was never more solid. This is the beginning of something big – here comes HELLOWEEN.

„HELLOWEEN“ will be released on June 18th, the album pre-order will kick off on March 26th.

Godfathers of Finnish Heavy Metal – SARCOFAGUS – Release The Very First/Last Cassette EP “Abscence of Light”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on March 11, 2021

SARCOFAGUS, The Godfathers of Finnish Heavy Metal, fronted by filmmaker and musician Kimmo Kuusniemi, at the end of 2020 declared the band has returned to the Valley Of The Kings.

Kimmo Kuusniemi, Ex Sarcofagus: “Well, I was sure Sarcofagus will not die easily 🙂 “Absence Of Light” was meant to be the title of the last Sarcofagus album release but before it was recorded I had decided it was time for Sarcofagus to go back to the Valley Of The Kings.

Toni Hietomaa made the fantastic cover for the album and now it is rightly the cover of this Compact Cassette release.

This is also a perfect end release for Sarcofagus. The first album was called “Cycle Of Life”. This release could have also been called “Cycle Closes” as it has the 1st single “Go To Hell/All Those Lies” from 1979. Then it has new versions of “Go To Hell” and “Astral Flyer”.

All these are sung by the original singer Hannu Leiden.

One reason why the “Absence Of Light” Album did not get finished was that in 2019, before the Covid, I thought that as the world was just getting darker and darker and because of the doomsday lyrics on the album I decided it was time to do something new!

So now I have been working for over a year on a new project, I call the music style “Nu World Music” 🙂 I have great musicians on it like violin player Tuomas Rounakari (Korpiklaani) and Bass player Steve Digiorgio (Testament). More about this project soon.

There are also available for order on http://www.sarcofagus.com “Absence Of Light” T Shirt and Poster to commemorate the end of an era.”

Old Skull Productions stated in their press release:

OUT NOW!!!!
Sarcofagus 🇫🇮 – Absence of Light

The very first/last cassette EP of the Godfather of Finnish Heavy Metal!!! “Abscence of Light” EP contains the very first single from 1979 and two re-recorded tracks (recorded in 2008) with the original members. Back when men dressing in black leather, wearing makeup and wielding occult regalia were most likely to be targets for bottle throwing competitions at the rock clubs, one man by the name of Kimmo Kuusniemi hit the scene with the heavy sounds of the damned, shooting fire from his guitar and developing his stage shows around the mysteries of ancient Egypt and black magic. The “Go to Hell” single release from his brainchild SARCOFAGUS in 1979 went down in history as the first pure Finnish Heavy Metal release.

Limited to 41 copies on red cassettes, with 37 mm pin buttons (four different designs by T. Kannibalet Hietomaa Art) and 9×6 cm stickers.

Order: https://old-skull-productions.soldigo.com/sarcofagus-absence-of-light_286309

Kiitos to Toni Hietomaa and Kimmo Kuusniemi! Heavy Metal is the law!

ALIEN WEAPONRY Announce Upcoming Performances With New Zealand Symphony Orchestra

Metal stars ALIEN WEAPONRY are embraced by fans and critics internationally as one of the current generation’s biggest names in heavy music, especially in their home country of New Zealand, where the band has achieved nearly household name status. This May 2021, the band plans to uplift their local fans in a completely new way by performing in unity with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at two special performances, taking place in Kirikiriroa Hamilton and Ōtautahi Christchurch.

The performance events, billed as Stronger Together, will be a unique musical experience for audiences, the NZSO and ALIEN WEAPONRY. The concerts are ALIEN WEAPONRY’s first with an orchestra and NZSO’s first collaboration with a metal band in their 75-year history.

The Kirikiriroa Hamilton performance will take place at the Claudelands Arena on Saturday, May 22 at 7:30 PM, and the Ōtautahi Christchurch performance will happen at Town Hall on Saturday, May 29 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are available now via https://premier.ticketek.co.nz/shows/Show.aspx?sh=ALIENWEA21.

As made evident with their breakout 2018 Napalm Records release Tū, ALIEN WEAPONRY delivers emotionally and politically charged stories of conflict and grief with a warrior-like attitude, with many of the songs sung in the indigenous language of te reo Māori. Some, including the high-octane “Kai Tangata”, incorporate taonga puoro (traditional instruments of the Māori people of New Zealand). These standout blended elements of band’s music are poised to make Stronger Together an exceptional evening for all in attendance.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Lewis de Jong, drummer Henry de Jong (Ngāti Pikiāo and Ngāti Raukawa) and bass player Tūranga Morgan-Edmonds (Ngāti Rarua, Ngāti Wai and Ngāti Hine) can’t wait to play with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, led by renowned New Zealand conductor Holly Mathieson.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Lewis de Jong says:
“I’ve always loved the idea of incorporating orchestral music with contemporary music, and when I heard that the NZSO wanted to collaborate with us I was really excited. I think there is going to be a very interesting mix of people who come to the show, mixing the metalheads with the classical music fans. One thing for sure, the mosh pits will be insane.”

Bassist Tūranga Morgan-Edmonds adds:
“Being trained as a classical pianist when I was a child, I’ve always wanted to play in the true orchestra experience. And now to be able to be a part of something involving the talented team of the NZSO, I am super excited, and I’m so glad I get to join it with our passion for heavy metal too!”

NZSO Chief Executive Peter Biggs says audiences will be blown away:
“Classical and metal share much of the same DNA. Many of metal and hard rock’s biggest names, including Eddie Van Halen, loved and took inspiration from classical composers and performers. Metallica’s live album S&M with the San Francisco Symphony sold in the millions.

While we’ve collaborated with some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s best-known bands and artists, for us to finally play with a metal band of ALIEN WEAPONRY’s calibre will be one of the highlights of 2021.”

For information on the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and this event, visit www.nzso.co.nz/alienweaponry.

ALIEN WEAPONRY have made headlines across the world with their unique fusion of thrash metal and their native language, te reo Maori. The band was recently featured on the cover of Metal Hammer UK, occupied the #1 slot for 13 weeks on the Devil’s Dozen countdown on SiriusXM Liquid Metal, their debut album Tū was voted album of the decade by Finnish metal magazine Tuonela, and American metal magazine Revolver named ALIEN WEAPONRY one of the bands most likely to break out in 2021. In Denmark, they were welcomed to the Copenhell Festival by a crowd of 10,000 doing a haka in their honor, and opened up for Slayer in Stuttgart, Germany on their final European show last year.

While the world has been in lockdown, the band has been in New Zealand, writing and recording their second album, anticipated for release soon. Stay tuned for more news!
