PREYRS, a visceral new force in alternative rock and metal, announce their birth onto the world stage, with debut single ‘Wave of Wisdom’ – out now via Pelagic Records.
PREYRS is the brainchild of Belfast rock artist Amy Montgomery and drummer/producer Michael Mormecha. Fusing raw alternative rock energy with the weight of metal, the quartet’s music is an electrifying clash of aggression and euphoria, darkness and uplift, chaos and control. Elements of artists as disparate as Nine Inch Nails, Chelsea Wolfe, Sonic Youth, and Julie Christmas combine to delirious and heady effect.
Debut single ‘Wave of Wisdom’ is a perfect introduction to the band, encapsulating their fierce yet gothic anthemic sound – where healing and rage collide in perfect harmony. A defiantly discordant clash of alt-folk slide guitar, and Mormecha’s pummelling industrial percussion, ‘Wave of Wisdom’ provides a great bedrock for Amy‘s incandescent delivery of uncertainty.
Of the new single, Amy comments: “‘Wave of Wisdom’ is about turning pain into power – tracing the roots of trauma through our own history and the wider collective to find truth, strength, and healing. It’s a raw reclamation of voice, born from the fire. It was written during a stark Canadian winter on Wolfe Island, looking out over the frozen expanse of Lake Ontario, a setting that mirrored the stillness, intensity, and clarity of the song’s creation. Self-produced by PREYRS drummer Michael Mormecha at Tree Song Studios, Ireland and mixed by Alex Loring.”
Busking on the streets of Belfast from the age of 15, Amy Montgomery met multi-instrumentalist Michael Mormecha a few years later and they’ve been working together ever since. Both songwriters in their own right, Michael fronted renowned Irish post-hardcore outfit Mojo Fury and worked as a producer for artists including The Bonnevilles, Mojo Fury and Joshua Burnside. They’re joined as PREYRS by longtime guitarist Nolan Donelly and new bass player Ciarán McGreevy.
Known for electrifying live performances, PREYRS will have their UK festival debut at Bloodstock Open Air this August, as well as appearing at Stendhal Festival in Ireland. Nominated as ‘Best Live Act’ and ‘Best Artist’ at the Northern Ireland Music Prize, Amy’s undeniably fierce and captivating frontperson energy has been her secret weapon often described as ‘otherworldly’ or ‘a force of nature’. For those seeking the epic, the healing, the aggressive and the unrelenting pulse of alternative rock and metal, PREYRS is it.
PREYRS will be supporting punk legends New Model Army across Europe this winter.

THOR, the strongman of rock and the only Asgardian deity with a 50 year career in hard rock and metal, follows the release last month of his Rock The Universe album with a new single, “Mama Let Him Play,” and a dynamite new video, shot at the bookstore launch of comedian/author Robert Dayton’s just-published (and hitherto untold) history of Canadian Glam, Cold Glitter.
It’s a unique, but wholly understandable tie-in. Thor naturally plays a large part in the story, while the venue for the book launch, Neptoon Records in Vancouver BC, has been a staunch Thor supporter for years.
In fact, Thor recorded the vocals for Rock The Universe in the rooms above the store, where Neptoon owner Rob Frith’s son Ben operates Waffle House Sound studios.
Author Dayton, too, is a part of the story, and the video – that’s him singing along with Thor and guitarist Frank Soda, and clowning around as well, a potent reminder of one of Thor’s most heartfelt maxims, that “Heavy Rock does not always have to be so serious. There should always be an element of fun to rock’n’roll.”
Dayton even gets to manhandle Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, for a while. Pretty impressive for a mere mortal. And there’s also a guest appearance from Canadian journalist and musician Nardwuar, the self-styled Human Serviette!
The second single to thunder out of Rock The Universe (following that devastating cover of The Sweet’s “Action”) back in May, “Mama Let Him Play” was a massive, platinum award winning Canadian hit for the band Doucette in 1977 – in fact, Thor was so impressed by it that he was performing it on his 1978-79 Keep The Dogs Away tour.
Thor continues, “Jerry Doucette was a stellar Canadian artist and I always loved this song. It never became a big hit outside of Canada, but I wanted to tribute Jerry and his band Doucette by giving it a re-charge with this single release and video.
“It’s a catchy and fun song, as you can see all the people’s smiling faces and those singing along in the video.”
As for Rock The Universe itself, the action does not end with “Action” and “Mama.” Eleven tracks, all covers, range across the the classic rock spectrum, from an impassioned take on Eric Burdon’s epic “Sky Pilot” and The Doors’ “Love Me Two Times,” to a spellbinding medley of Deep Purple’s “Highway Star” and “Black Night,” and a raucously riffing take on The Yardbirds’ “Heart Full Of Soul,” described by ‘birds drummer and founder member Jim McCarty as “a pretty forceful version… he does seem to have the essence of the song (in a heavy metal way).”
Thor explains, “In the 1970s I toured extensively, over 300 days a year across North America, and Rock The Universe is chock-full of songs from that era. These are favorite songs of mine that we played each night, and thus enabled myself and the band to become seasoned performers.
“It also gave me the opportunity, almost 50 years later, to join forces again with Frank Soda to lay down those magical tracks we played live from yesteryear, that would fuel our tours. Songs by our heroes.” Al Harlow (Prism) and Ray Roper (Stonebolt) complete the album line-up, and it was produced by Kevin Stuart Swain, who also played multiple instruments on it. When Thor describes their performances as “stellar,” it’s not hyperbole.
A thunderous take on The Beatles’s “Back In The USSR” is as fab as the foursome that performed the original; and, in case anyone should need a break from the mayhem,Thor also takes on one of the most underrated ballads in Ray Davies’s entire Kinky kanon, the 1966 b-side “I’m Not Like Everybody Else.”
In fact, even as we rock out to “Mama Let Him Play,” Thor is hard at work on his next video, for that very song, with the promise “There’s a lot of special effects and prosthetics involved.”
Alcázares, the long-awaited third album by Franco-Spanish conquistadors IMPUREZA is out now and streaming now on the Season of Mist YouTube channel. The album marks the band’s return to the frontline of extreme metal with a work as steeped in mysticism as it is in violence.
Conceptually rooted in the Spanish Reconquista (722–1492), Alcázares unfolds as a fantastical and historical epic: eleven tracks channeling the collapse of Islamic Iberia and the merciless rise of Christian dominion.
Fusing guttural death metal with flamenco guitar, orchestral flourishes, and Spanish-language vocals, IMPUREZA construct a sonic Alcázar; where the sacred and savage co-exist. Tracks such as “Reconquistar Al-Ándalus” and “Castigos Eclesiásticos” invoke the spiritual violence of holy war, portraying crusading zeal and inquisitorial cruelty with an unflinching eye. Elsewhere, instrumentals like “Verdiales” and “Murallas” serve as meditative interludes between blood-soaked battle hymns. The album’s palette is one of dust, fire, and faith, evoking both historical myth and fantastical dread.
Recorded and mixed by Sébastien Camhi at Studio Artmusic (France) and mastered by Jacob Hansen (Denmark), Alcázares is elevated by guest contributions from Xavier Hamon (percussion) and Louis Viallet (orchestration).
With Alcázares, IMPUREZA have carved their boldest statement to date: an ode to a violent past, where the sword and cross met in a storm of steel and ash.
Tracklist: 1. Verdiales (1:15) 2. Bajo las Tizonas de Toledo (6:25) 3. Covadonga (4:01) 4. Pestilencia (4:44) 5. Reconquistar Al-Ándalus (5:25) 6. Murallas (2:24) 7. La Orden del Yelmo Negro (4:57) 8. Castigos Eclesiásticos (6:06) 9. El Ejército de los Fallecidos de Alarcos (5:18) 10. Ruina del Alcázar (1:37) 11. Santa Inquisición (6:26) Full runtime: 49:02
IMPUREZA is a Franco-Spanish metal band formed in 2004 by guitarist Lionel Cano Muñoz from Orléans. Their music is distinguished by a unique fusion of extreme metal and Spanish sounds inspired by Andalusian culture and flamenco, creating an atypical style known as Hispanic Metal. IMPUREZA remains an innovative project in the international metal scene, making it a pioneer of the genre.
Concept:
The entire concept of the band revolves around the voluptuousness of Latin atmospheres, the ferocity of metal, and Spanish culture and history, explored through a fictional and esoteric aspect. Their compositions feature both clean and guttural vocals sung in the language of Cervantes, flamenco guitar, acoustic fretless bass, extreme metal, and orchestral arrangements that evoke the colors of Spain. The very essence of their music lies in the duality between two seemingly opposed musical genres, which, through clever composition, give birth to a new and avant-garde style. Their fiery music is literally the union of traditional Hispanic folklore and extreme metal. These metal warriors brandish their Iberian sounds as weapons with pride. This ingenious alliance is matched only by the singular and unprecedented creative originality of its founder Lionel Cano Muñoz and his compañero Esteban Martín, both of Spanish nationality. IMPUREZA’s conquistadors draw inspiration from their strong identity, which defines the band’s very essence. Often nicknamed the “French Nile” due to their primary influences, combining the complex and brutal lines of death metal with the most ardent and undulating Latin flames. IMPUREZA‘s members are also influenced by many Spanish artists such as flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía and gypsy singer Camarón de la Isla, as well as bands like Behemoth, Morbid Angel, Krisiun, and Fleshgod Apocalypse, among others.
Let the conquistadors of IMPUREZA lead you into their realm and immerse you in Spanish culture with a groundbreaking musical concept — the one and only fierce guardians of Hispanic Metal!

“This song a great representation of our live show and the chemistry between all the band members,” says lead singer Meghan Parnell. “You really get to hear the power of the vocal and then the craftsmanship of the instrumentalists as I step away from the mic and really let them do their thing. No live version of this song is the same. Every time we perform it, it’s a journey.”
“Nothing approaches the absolute joy of watching this band from the crowded comfort of a noisy club. Meghan is without question up there with the all-time great vocalists! One hell of a performance.” – R’N’R Magazine
“A musical experience that will stay with you forever. With expert craftsmanship, stylistic versatility, and an emotionality that gets under your skin. One of the strongest live bands around.” – JazzandRock.com

The virtuosic talisman Vernon Reid has announced details of his new solo album Hoodoo Telemetry, which will be released on October 3, 2025 on Artone / The Players Club Records. To celebrate he has revealed the video for the first single, The Haunting, which you can watch HERE.
If you’ve followed the beats of his half-century career, you’ll know Vernon Reid as an artist who paints in every colour. Depending on the era you dive into and the album on your turntable, you’ll find the New York polymath pinballing between jazz, metal, punk, funk, electronica and hip-hop, cutting heads with collaborators as eclectic as Mick Jagger and Public Enemy, endlessly shedding his skin yet always speaking his truth.
Globally celebrated as a giant of electric guitar (he was recently hailed by Rolling Stone amongst the top 50 players of all-time), Reid’s Grammy Award-winning records with alt-rock trailblazers, Living Colour, still sound as fresh and fierce as when Cult Of Personality hijacked the Billboard chart in the late-’80s. But to take the pulse of the zeitgeist as he sees it – and hear his fearless musicality in microcosm – you need only drop the needle on his new solo album.
Hoodoo Telemetry,” considers the 66-year-old of this kaleidoscopic 14-track opus, “is like a piece of my all-over-the-place mind. It took me a while to start this record because I was thinking about what I wanted to do next, managing my time with all my other projects. I was also in different spaces with these songs: some are new, others are reclamations of material from a long time ago. But suddenly, I found the focus and it was very clear to me: I gotta do this now.”
The overdriven funk bassline and glistening soul of first single, The Haunting finds Reid tipping his hat to a fellow chameleon (“I’m a huge Prince fan and there’s some of who he was in that song’s DNA”), before the scratch ‘n’ glitch of the brass-driven Bronx Paradox salutes the New York neighbourhood’s greatest musical export. “I wrote that in tribute to DJ Logic,” he explains. “Everybody considered the Bronx a wasteland, a warzone. But with hip-hop, those kids created the final original music of the 20th century.”
Hoodoo Telemetry isn’t a linear piece, but a thrillingly tangled tapestry of genres, collaborators and material from different time periods. Its energy and chaos seems to reflect and challenge what Reid considers the “tumultuous” Living Colour, Reid’s best-known band burst into bloom on a New York live circuit that was more fluid than ever before or since. “We had an ecology of clubs to play at, from CBGBs to the Cat Club and the Ritz,” he recalls of the first steps of a solidified lineup featuring Corey Glover (vocals), Muzz Skillings (bass) and Will Calhoun (drums).
Carried by word of mouth, the tinderbox was already set to explode when the patronage of Mick Jagger sent the band over the top, the Rolling Stones singer manning the desk for their demos. “He worked on Glamour Boys and Which Way To America?” explains Reid, “and he was a great producer. He really coached Corey along. But it was so fundamentally weird that he entered our lives. I didn’t know where to put my hands.”
Seizing his opportunity, Reid threw everything on his mental jukebox at Living Colour’s deathless debut, 1988’s Vivid. “You had Broken Hearts on the same album as Cult Of Personality,” he points out of a tracklisting where anything could happen. “We might be playing metal one moment then writing a country song with hip-hop the next. Or Funny Vibe, which is like prog-folk informed by King Crimson.”
Sailing to #6 on the US Billboard chart – and ultimately double-platinum status – Vivid proved adventurous music could still sell by the ton. The following year, a support on the Stones’ Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle tour bumped their profile – and gave Reid a close-up glimpse at the rock ‘n’ roll super-league. “Backstage on that Stones tour they had all the parlour games – I remember Bill Wyman kicking my ass at ping-pong!”
Alongside Living Colour’s six albums and counting, Reid has worn a thousand different hats since those breakout years, whether producing Grammy-nominated albums for the likes of Salif Keita, composing hit movie scores or lending his guitar skills to a who’s who including Janet Jackson, B.B. King, Tracy Chapman and Mariah Carey.
No doubt, it’s these competing demands that mean Reid’s solo career (which began with 1996’s Mistaken Identity) has lain dormant since 2004’s Known Unknown. “But with everything that’s been happening, suddenly I had a focus,” he says of the febrile context to Hoodoo Telemetry. “Y’know, the world is a ball on a pendulum. It swings. Right now, we’re living through unprecedented times, and not just in America.”
In hard times, Hoodoo Telemetry doesn’t have the answers. But to play Vernon Reid’s breathtakingly ambitious new album is to hear every shade of humanity and question where we are headed next. “These songs are looking at the past through a different lens, then looking forward,” he concludes. “Like, ‘Where is this going and how are we getting there? Are we driving the bus or are we passengers in this self-driving vehicle into the future?’ That’s the space that Hoodoo Telemetry is really exploring…”
