Thobbe Englund on His Return to Sabaton: “The Best Thing That’s Ever Happened To Me!”

Posted by tarjavirmakari on May 7, 2025

Thobbe Englund, who returned to Sabaton on February 9 of last year after eight years and reclaimed the guitarist position from Tommy Johansson, spoke last week with the Brazilian YouTube channel Porque! Metal about his comeback and how it all happened.

Englund first explained that he had always kept in touch with the band since his departure in 2016: “We even wrote some songs together, and we always made sure to stay in touch, barbecuing, having beers, visiting each other’s family and stuff like that.”

When the request came almost ten years later to rejoin, it was the perfect fit for Englund: “It was the perfect timing for me,” he says. because when he originally left, he was tired and burnt out, “I wanted to slow down a bit, and focus a little bit on my own music and stuff like that, but also have a kid, buy a house, and all that.”

The decision to return was ultimately “a no-brainer” for him. It felt like a “full-circle moment.” Englund says: “This is the  best [thing] that could ever happen”. “I belong to Sabaton. That’s my family, that’s my best friends.” When his return was confirmed, the band fellt like “[giddy] school girls.”

Sabaton on Englund’s Return

The other Sabaton members had also expressed their excitement about Englund’s return when the announcement was made last year.

Pär Sundström: “This is a full circle moment for Sabaton and we are beyond excited to have Thobbe rejoin the band. He’s a talented guitarist, songwriter and a kind guy who we have a lot of fun with. We didn’t even need to hold auditions with other guitar players. All that was needed was to spend New Year’s Eve together to know that the time was right for Thobbe´s return.”

Joakim Brodén: “This decision was a no-brainer for us as a band and for Thobbe. He knows the drill and is the perfect fit. This is a great outcome, and we think everyone is going to be psyched about the news! The time is right. Welcome back brother!”

Hannes Van Dahl: “Who? Thobbe f***ng Englund, that’s who! The man is back! I’m happy to once again share the stage with one of my best friends! Welcome back brother!”

Chris Rörland: “I’m beyond excited and happy for the return of the king! We’ve had so many good times together, both on stage and off stage. It’s gonna be great to share the stage again. Welcome back and welcome home my brother! Love ya!”

“Templars”: Englund’s First Single Since 2016

At the end of April, it was finally time for Englund’s musical comeback:  Sabaton released “Templars,” the first single featuring him on guitar since the 2016 album The Last Stand. According to rumors, “Templars” also marks the beginning of a new album – though nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Until then, it’s a matter of waiting patiently and enjoying the new song.

GAUPA Reveal New Single ‘Ten of Twelve’ & Details of Forthcoming Mini Album “Fyr”

Swedish heavy stoner rockers GAUPA drop ‘Ten of Twelve’ as the first advance single from their forthcoming new mini album “Fyr”, meaning either “four”, “beacon” or “lighthouse”. The release is scheduled for July 4, 2025.

Available for pre-order here: http://lnk.spkr.media/gaupa-fyr

“The rooster is the tenth animal in the Chinese zodiac and that’s also the meaning of the title“, vocalist Emma Näslund reveals. “It’s usually connected with perseverance, being on time and alert. The rooster often suggests prosperity and luck in different cultures. I read that somewhere back in the day people thought it was lucky to bring a rooster into the kitchen. I thought that it was a bit fun to play with the idea of a chaotic and unlucky rooster. Someone who just messes things up.“

Erik Jerka Sävström adds: “Initially, I wanted a medieval sounding riff, being inspired by our compatriots Hällas“, the bass player writes. “When the riff emerged, I truly tried to give it that dreamy Hällas sound, but then I started to play with the changing pattern and it turned out even more complex than originally intended.”

Tracklist

  1. Lion’s Thorn
  2. Heavy Lord
  3. Ten of Twelve
  4. Elastic Sleep
  5. Sömnen / Febersvan (Live at Monkey Moon Studios, 2023)
Cover artwork by Kutlayus – Layout by David Åhrström

GAUPA return with new mini album “Fyr” and a slimmed down line-up to serve up some of their heaviest material to date. A multi-layered play on words, in the Swedish language “Fyr” can mean ‘four’, which coincides with this being GAUPA‘s fourth release. Yet it can also mean ‘lighthouse’, ‘beacon’, and ‘fire’, which for various reasons fit the music and lyrical content as well.

GAUPA have utilized the departure of guitarist Daniel Nygren, who left the band in 2024, to manifest a “big turning point”, according to remaining and now sole guitarist David Rosberg. With various changes to their writing process, they also worked in new studios, with a new recording crew, and new visual artists.

New engineer Karl Daniel Lidén has given the tracks on “Fyr” a grittier, more aggressive sound. At the same time, the core elements of the Swedes’ musical approach are present: spellbinding intricacy, tripped-out, spacious verses guiding a steady stream of psychedelia, and waves of hard stoner riffs.

Inspired largely by Ursula K. Le Guin’s award-winning science fiction novel “The Word for World Is Forest”, vocalist Emma Näslund’s lyrics contemplate the concept of time as well as the essential question as to what is real, which seeps throughout the songs.

Since the release of their self-titled EP in 2018, GAUPA – which translates as ‘lynx’ in English – have paved new ground in the stoner and psychedelic scene, building a unique cosmos defined by enchanting lyrical surrealism and mind-altering sounds. In 2020, their debut album “Feberdröm” pushed them into the international spotlight with its outstanding blend of progressive metal, doom, stoner, and folk, steered by the entrancing vocals of Emma Näslund.

Following the arrival of 2022’s full-length “Myriad”, with the track ‘Exoskeleton’ reaching over a million streams on Spotify (the EP’s ‘Febersvan’ now has over 4 million), GAUPA went on to deliver unforgettable performances at prestigious festivals including Wacken Open Air, Hellfest, Sweden Rock, Mystic, and Desertfest among many others, as well as on tours with underground heavyweights such as UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS, BLOOD CEREMONY, and GRAVEYARD.

Although GAUPA describe “Fyr” as a “patchwork of parts”, with each member having an equal part to play, this mini album comes as a solid record that sets a high bar for their future works. For the present, lean back, listen closely, and enjoy this captivating waypoint on the GAUPA journey!

(Based on a text originally written by Liz Scarlett)

The physical release of “Fyr” comes with a bonus track that is not included in the digital version.

Chicago’s HARM’S WAY is pleased to unleash their Other World EP. The two-track offering features the title track alongside a reimagined version of “Wanderer” from the band’s critically lauded Common Suffering full-length.

Comments the band, “The track ‘Other World’ was originally recorded during the Common Suffering sessions at Studio 4, but was ultimately held off the album. We revisited and remixed the track ourselves to now be delivered to you. In addition, we reimagined the track ‘Wanderer’ for this single/EP, with help of our friend King Yosef taking on some collaborative production duties. Now titled ‘V.Y.B.S.S.,’ both songs deliver a proper juxtaposition of who we are creatively as a band, both present and future.”

HARM’S WAY‘s most recent album, Common Suffering, was released in September 2023 on Metal Blade Records. As their first studio release in nearly five years, it is easily the most musically diverse undertaking in their catalog, and their most impressive. Common Suffering shifts the paradigm for heavy music and is a modern classic in wait.

While 2018’s Posthuman mined the unflinching d-beat brutality of Deathreat, blistering thrash, groove, and the icy nihilism of industrial bands like Godflesh and Demanufacture-era Fear Factory, Common Suffering integrates elements of paranoia-driven ambience a la Lustmord, glacially paced doom in the vein of early Melvins and Khanate, and even Meshuggah-like polyrhythms in its fully-automatic onslaught. HARM’S WAY pulls it off with style and fury. Common Suffering is nothing less than a fully armored and mechanized instrument of war ready to detonate listeners with their incredibly memorable riffs, breakdowns, and impeccable songwriting with subtle melody and point/counterpoint.

HARM’S WAY:
James Pligge – lead vocals
Bo Lueders – guitars
Christopher Mills – drums
Nick Gauthier – guitars
Casey Soyk – bass

The 2024 album, Teenage Rebel, sets off with a captivating intro-monologue spoken by Danish voice actress Freya Miller, creating a retro, rebellious atmosphere that sets the mood for the album and prepares the stage for the opening track “We Come Alive” – a true blast of an opener. Rhythmic guitars create an exciting backdrop for the gripping vocals of frontman Tobias Gustavsson, leading towards an incredible guitar solo by guitar hero Jonny Wemmenstedt. The album’s title track, “Teenage Rebel”, convinces with tight riffing and an anthem-like chorus honoring the tradition of 80s hard rock. “Victorious” is an anthemic masterpiece combining powerful vocals with dynamic instrumentals, promising to creep in the listener’s head and reign as a fan favorite at their energetic live shows, while “21” is a wild ride celebrating the ease of youth. Touching ballads like “Last To Know”, “Daughter” and “The One That Got Away” present an even more vulnerable facet, reaching straight for the listener’s heart with yearning lyrics, while tracks like “Addicted To Your Love” and “Unchain My Heart” celebrate love, youth and the joy of being naïve.

After a decade-long hiatus, Savatage made a triumphant return to the stage, launching their long-awaited world tour in South America, which marked their first performances in the region in over 20 years. The tour commenced with a highly anticipated performance at the 30th Anniversary Edition of the Monsters of Rock Festival in São Paulo, Brazil, where the band shared the stage with fellow rock titans like Scorpions, Judas Priest, and Europe. Thousands of passionate fans packed the venue, wearing Savatage merch and raising signs and posters in celebration of the band’s return. The show was marked by nostalgic hit songs, opening with “The Ocean” and “Welcome”, performed live for the first time since 1998. One of the most emotional highlights of the night came during a touching moment when a pre-recorded video of Jon Oliva performing “Believe” played out, followed by a heartfelt slideshow tribute to Criss Oliva — leaving the audience visibly moved and solidifying the show as one of the most unforgettable in the band’s South American tour.

Building on that momentum, Savatage co-headlined a killer show at Espaço Unimed, again in São Paulo, with legendary band Opeth. The band then traveled to Chile for their long-overdue debut performance, finally fulfilling the dream of Chilean fans who had waited a lifetime to see them live. The South American leg of the tour concluded in a powerful performance at the Masters of Rock Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on April 26th. Across each performance, fans were treated to an epic and nostalgic setlist packed with fan favorite songs from Edge of Thorns and The Wake of Magellan, handpicked by Jon Oliva himself. The epic return of Savatage to the stages in South America solidifies that the band’s legacy is as alive and powerful as ever.

The tour includes several headline shows, some of which sold out within hours, as well as major festival appearances. And that’s not all — fans can expect a few special surprises along the way.
