In live news, ALICE IN CHAINS will be performing at the 2013 Download Festival at Donnington Park, England on June 14th alongside SLIPKNOT. They will also be joining METALLICA and SEPULTURA at Rock In Rio 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on September 19th.

They join the previously announced SLIPKNOT who headline on Friday, June 14, IRON MAIDEN on Saturday, June 15th and RAMMSTEIN on Sunday, June 16th.

The eighth annual MusiCares MAP Fund benefit concert honored ALICE IN CHAINS co-founder Jerry Cantrell and certified interventionist and Sony/ATV Music Publishing Senior Consultant Neil Lasher on May 31 at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. Cantrell was honored with the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for his dedication and support of the MusiCares MAP Fund, and for his commitment to helping other addicts with the addiction and recovery process. All proceeds benefit the MusiCares MAP Fund, which provides members of the music community access to addiction recovery treatment regardless of their financial situation.

“I’m honored to be chosen this year,” Cantrell told Rolling Stone magazine. He added, “I am nobody’s fucking role model. It’s too much pressure: Everybody’s human, everybody has flaws, everybody falls down. It’s just a fucking fact of life. And a lot of people stand and get the fuck back up after falling. Some people don’t get that chance. My band’s been a harsh example of that — what happens when you don’t deal with it.”
Hosted by television personality Steve-O, the evening featured a special performance by Cantrell and his ALICE IN CHAINS bandmates, who played a five-song acoustic set at the event consisting of “Nutshell”, “Your Decision”, “No Excuses”, “Got Me Wrong” and “Would?” Grammy-nominated musician Moby DJed live during dinner.
“Jerry‘s role in shaping the world of rock music is profound and ongoing,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy and MusiCares. “His artistry as a guitarist is inspiring, and his contributions as a songwriter have earned ALICE IN CHAINS millions of fans around the world. But what unites Jerry and Neil are their unwavering support of MusiCares and our recovery programs, and their unselfish capacity to be of service to music people struggling with addiction.”

The MusiCares Foundation offers programs and services to members of the music community including emergency financial assistance for basic living expenses including rent, utilities and car payments; medical expenses including doctor, dentist and hospital bills; psychotherapy; and treatment for HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, hepatitis C, and other critical illnesses. MusiCares offers nationwide educational workshops covering a variety of subjects, including financial, legal, medical, and substance abuse issues, and programs in collaboration with healthcare professionals that provide services such as flu shots, hearing tests, and medical/dental screenings.
The MusiCares MAP Fund allows access to addiction recovery treatment and sober living resources for members of the music community. Staffed by qualified chemical dependency and intervention specialists, MusiCares Safe Harbor Rooms, supported by the Bohemian Foundation, offer a support network to those in recovery while they are participating in the production of televised music shows and other major music events. MusiCares holds weekly addiction support groups for people to discuss how to best cope with the issues surrounding the recovery process. The MusiCares Sober Touring Network is a database of individuals across the United States who can take music people to recovery support meetings while on the road.
Established in 1989 by The Recording Academy, MusiCares provides a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need. MusiCares‘ services and resources cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, and each case is treated with integrity and confidentiality. According to The Pulse Of Radio, two never-before-released songs from late ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley appear on the soundtrack of a new film. The movie, called “Grassroots”, is based on the true story of two Seattle music journalists who tried to shake up the local political scene despite having no experience in it. It is not clear whether the two songs were recorded before or during Staley‘s time with ALICE IN CHAINS, or during the long, six-year period in which he virtually disappeared from public view until his death in 2002 from an overdose of drugs.
The titles of the songs have not been announced yet, nor whether they will be just heard in the film or on a soundtrack album.
The movie, due out June 22 in limited release, stars Jason Biggs and Joel David Moore as Seattle music journalists who both decide to run for office.
The film is based on the book “Zioncheck For President: A True Story Of Idealism And Madness In American Politics”, which was written by the man Biggs is playing, Phil Campbell.
Meanwhile, some other Staley-related material may soon see the light of day as well: as previously reported, PEARL JAM guitarist Mike McCready is looking for singers to lay vocals down for some uncompleted tracks by MAD SEASON, the band he and Staley formed in the mid-’90s and recorded one album with.
ALICE IN CHAINS is also about to get to work recording the follow-up to its 2009 “comeback” album, “Black Gives Way To Blue”. The new disc will be the second with William DuVall on vocals and guitar.
ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that artists like Staley didn’t come around very often. “Layne was a very unique, one-of-a-kind guy,” he said. “There’s, like, a handful of those guys in music, for every generation, that are that unique and that hard to cop, but a lot of people try. [Laughs] But there’s a lot of people that feel the weight of what that guy brought to music and have been influenced by it.”

ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell is among the Northwest artists who have recorded overhead safety and informational announcements that will be heard at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport as part of The Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative, Experience The City Of Music — a cooperative effort by the Port Of Seattle, Seattle Music Commission and PlayNetwork.
The Cantrell PSA alerts travellers to the airport’s no-smoking policy: “This is Jerry Cantrell of ALICE IN CHAINS reminding you that smoking is allowed on the lower drive outside the building and only in designated areas … Bummer, dude.”
For the Sea-Tac program, the Port Of Seattle turned to Redmond, Washington-based PlayNetwork, a creator of “original vibes” for more than 15,000 clients around the world. Working with the Seattle Music Commission and other groups, the company came up with a four-pronged program which also features overhead music from Jimi Hendrix.
The Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative, Experience The City Of Music will launch this week to showcase the northwest region’s music culture and enhance the experience of millions of passengers who pass through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport each year.
The Sea-Tac Airport Music Initiative, Experience The City Of Music is a comprehensive program that enhances the traveler’s experience by utilizing speakers and screens airport-wide to feature a diverse variety of northwest music from the soulful sounds of Quincy Jones to the poignant lyrics of Eddie Vedder. Travelers will also hear artist-read public announcements, enjoy curated videos on terminal and baggage claim monitors, and listen to a multi-channel web radio player available through the free airport Wi-Fi network.
