According to Faster Louder, a BLACK SABBATH Australian tour announcement on Halloween seems imminent as a mysterious video posted by promoters Live Nation this morning (Aussie time) suggests that the reunited band could be announcing a tour. The seven second video (which has since been pulled) promises that “darkness descends” tonight at 10pm (Aussie time) before directing fans towards a collection of Sabbath clips.
The reunited Black Sabbath (minus drummer Bill Ward) are currently working on their first full studio album since 1978’s Never Say Die with Rick Rubin (METALLICA, SLAYER) at the production helm. According to Metal Injection, there are 15 songs that have been written, and Geezer Butler says 12 of them will make the record, most likely with the additional three serving as bonus tracks for different special editions.
Apparently, guitarist Tony Iommi completed all 15 guitar tracks during the band’s sessions in England earlier this year, and judging by the way most bands record, that would mean drums are done as well. Ozzy and Geezer are working to complete the tracks in five song increments, with the first five being worked on currently.
Ozzy is tracking vocals, with bassist Geezer Butler writing all the lyrics. One song title has been confirmed and it’s ‘God Is Dead’.
According to Zoe Chamberlain from Sundaymercury.net, heavy rock grandfathers BLACK SABBATH just want to be loved, according to an eminent group of philosophers studying the Brummie band.
What’s more, the Brummies come from religious backgrounds and one of them is – wait for it – a committed VEGAN.
Love and peace are not normally the first words that come to mind when thinking of Black Sabbath. But, far from the cries of destruction and evil, the band’s mission has been to challenge people to live better and be happier, according to the boffins.
Drawing on the works of Plato and Aristotle to debate the heavy metal rockers in a book entitled Black Sabbath and Philosophy: Mastering Reality, they come to the conclusion that Ozzy Osbourne & Co are, in fact, much misunderstood.
They’re sensitive souls at heart – and Britain’s chief contribution to existentialism.
“It is ironic that Black Sabbath has a reputation for being satanic and evil when close analysis of their lyrics reveals they are open to the question of God’s existence, sensitive to the poetry of life, and full of compassion for the struggles of humanity,” says philosophy teacher Liz Swan, who got a PhD at the University of North Carolina.
Video footage of MOTION DEVICE, the Ontario, Canada-based band fronted by 10-year-old female singer Sara Menoudakis, performing a cover version of BLACK SABBATH‘s “War Pigs” can be seen below.
In addition to Sara, MOTION DEVICE features her 13-year-old brother David, 15-year-old sister Andrea, 18-year-old cousin Josh and 18-year-old family friend Alex.
MOTION DEVICE recently made its radio debut on “The Kim Mitchell Show” on Toronto’s classic rock station Q107. They also performed on national TV on CTV‘s “Canada AM” and played the halftime show in front of 20,000 for the Toronto Argonauts at The Rogers Centre.
The Menoudakis kids got their passion for rock from their father John Menoudakis, who has co-written their handful of original songs. He also functions as MOTION DEVICE‘s manager.
“Rock and roll is in their blood,” John told TheStar.com in August.
“Sara definitely doesn’t have a dainty voice,” he laughed. “She does realize that if she is going to continue with music she needs to, number one, be unique.”
Since MOTION DEVICE launched a Twitter account earlier in the year, John has posted nearly 28,000 tweets and has reached out to such legendary rockers as AEROSMITH‘s Steven Tyler and Alice Cooper.
Cooper tweeted a response to MOTION DEVICE‘s cover of “School’s Out” saying, “The singer is a 10-year-old girl, but this band has more bite than most.”
A new book in The Blackwell Philosophy And Pop Culture Series, entitled BLACK SABBATH And Philosophy: Mastering Reality, is now available. (Amazon order link here).
A book description reads: Black Sabbath is one of the world’s most influential and enduring rock bands. Dubbed “THE BEATLES of heavy metal” by Rolling Stone, they helped to define a genre with classic songs like ‘Paranoid’, ‘Iron Man’, and ‘War Pigs’, songs whose lyrics reveal hidden depth and philosophical insight. Their songs confront existential despair, social instability, political corruption, the horrors of war, and the nature of evil. This book explores the wide range of profound ideas in the band’s music and lyrics to help you understand Black Sabbath as never before.
Discusses and debates essential Black Sabbath topics and themes, such as the problem of evil, ‘War Pigs’ and the nature of just war theory, whether or not Sabbath is still Sabbath without Ozzy, and whether “evil is in the ear of the beholder”.
Gives you new perspectives on Black Sabbath’s music and lyrics. Provides a deeper appreciation and understanding of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, and Ronnie James Dio. Brings some of history’s heaviest thinkers to bear on the band’s music, from Aristotle and Nietzsche to Schopenhauer and Marx.
