Tony Martin Interview: Listen To Tony Discussing The Asylum Show, Black Sabbath, Bill Ward And Opera Singers!

TONY MARTIN is one of those legendary musicians who has a main part in the writing of Heavy Metal history. His great style in singing makes many fans and critics believe he is one of the best Metal vocalists. The second most long standing vocalist of Heavy Metal creators BLACK SABBATH, Tony Martin was recently interviewed by Metal Shock Finland’s Ali Blackdiamond ahead of his upcoming one-off show with his band HEADLESS CROSS at The Asylum in Birmingham on July 27th 2012. Some of this interesting conversation can be read below:

When discussing the upcoming Asylum Show, Tony said: ‘It feels a bit nervewracking as it’s the first time playing my own solo things, in my own country, in my own town!’ The set is awesome, just brilliant, I’m really looking forward to it. We’d love to ram it full and make a real party of it.

This year has been quite eventful with the release of ‘The Third Cage‘ with Dario Mollo, has really livened things up, so we decided to go for it.

Blaze is going to do an unplugged acoustic set, I might even get up and do something with him.’

Tony had the following to say when asked about Bill Ward exiting BLACK SABBATH:

‘ My years with Black Sabbath span 10 years and I’ve heard all the stories, not once did they say a bad word about Bill. They’ve always rated him, they love him. He’s had his little moments like we all have, them included, but I didn’t understand why they didn’t give him time to get his thing together, why not set up rehearsals to help him out? It seems a bit like a publicity stunt in that they’re saying ‘we can’t be bothered to do rehearsals to get him to learn all the stuff again, so we’ll save it for another time and another reunion.’

I really don’t know, but just don’t get it. Bill’s a lovely guy by the way, really cool.’

Original BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler performed live together for the first time in seven years on May 19, playing an intimate show at the 3,800-person O2 Academy in SABBATH‘s hometown of Birmingham, England. The show, which served as a warm-up for the group’s appearance at the Download festival, was laced with emotion and drama: it was the first live appearance for Iommi since being diagnosed with cancer, and it was the first with stand-in drummer Tommy Clufetos, making the split official between founding drummer Bill Ward and the rest of SABBATH.

Iommi, Osbourne and Butler discussed their new album in a video interview posted at NME.com. The three musicians are working with producer Rick Rubin on their first recording project together in 34 years, with Osbourne saying, “We’ve written about 15 songs so far. Whether they all get on the album, I don’t know. We just keep on writing.” Osbourne also dropped a clue about the set’s title, hinting, “Next year, 2013, is a good clue to what we’re going to call the album.”

As for how Rubin influenced the band’s approach to writing together again, Butler explained, “He sat us down, put the first album on and said ‘listen to this’, imagine it’s 1969, you’ve just done that, what would you do next?”

Iommi added, “It’s taken on the flavor of the old stuff in the way we put things together, but with a different look on it.”

The project suffered another blow earlier this year when Iommi was diagnosed with cancer, although he said that playing the warm-up show in Birmingham, was a boost to his spirits. “It was great,” he said. “Going through what I’ve gone through over the past year has been like living in a different world — being onstage and to get that (reaction from the fans) is just fantastic, it really boosts you up.”

SABBATH has curtailed almost all its planned touring activities for 2012 while Iommi undergoes treatment. The band is still scheduled to headline Chicago’s Lollapalooza event in early August.

British heavy metal legends BLACK SABBATH were named the most inspirational band in rock earlier tonight (Thursday, June 7) at The Kerrang! Awards 2012 Fuelled By Relentless Energy Drink.

The reformed band — consisting of vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi and bass player Geezer Butler — picked up the Inspiration Award at Kerrang! magazine’s annual awards show at The Brewery in Barbican, London.

On the eve of what will be a triumphant return to Donington Park, with their headlining appearance at the Download festival on Sunday, June 10, BLACK SABBATH collected this trophy in honor of their immeasurable impact on heavy rock. Put bluntly, without BLACK SABBATH, there would be no METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER, LAMB OF GOD, MACHINE HEAD…the list goes on, with Lars Ulrich once saying, “BLACK SABBATH is and always will be synonymous with heavy metal.”

Rock stars galore, including BLACK SABBATH, Slash, TENACIOUS D and BLACK VEIL BRIDES were out in force tonight as The Kerrang! Awards 2012 Fuelled By Relentless Energy Drink took place in London. Big winners included BLACK SABBATH, YOU ME AT SIX, BLACK VEIL BRIDES, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE and ENTER SHIKARI, with over a million votes cast making this the biggest Awards yet.

Renowned as one of the most legendary awards events in the rock music calendar, The Kerrang! Awards 2012 Fuelled By Relentless Energy Drink did not disappoint, with a rock royalty theme to mark the Queen’s Jubilee. Hosted by Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR) and Scott Ian (ANTHRAX), some of the biggest names in international rock and metal took to the Awards “black carpet” to celebrate the past year in music.

On the eve of what will be a triumphant return to Donington Park, with their headlining appearance at the Download festival on Sunday, June 10, BLACK SABBATH were honored with the Kerrang! Inspiration Award. Accompanied on the night by their families, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler collected this trophy in honour of BLACK SABBATH‘s immeasurable impact on heavy rock. Put bluntly, without BLACK SABBATH, there would be no METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER, LAMB OF GOD, MACHINE HEAD…the list goes on, with Lars Ulrich once saying, “BLACK SABBATH is and always will be synonymous with heavy metal.”

The world’s most famous rock guitarist Slash was presented with the Kerrang! Icon award, putting him in the company of previous K! Icons Ronnie James Dio, ALICE IN CHAINS, MARILYN MANSON, NINE INCH NAILS and MC5, with Kerrang! saying, “Slash should be credited and forever rewarded for defining the sound of modern rock music…”

Atlanta prog metallers MASTODON were awarded with Best Album (for their critically acclaimed 2011 release “The Hunter” which went to No. 19 in the U.K. album chart — a huge achievement for a record whose song titles include “Curl Of The Burl”, “Octopus Has No Friends” and “Bedazzled Fingernails”.

Best Single was awarded to glam metal group BLACK VEIL BRIDES for “Rebel Love Song”, with MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE honoured with Best International Band for the third time in their career, having won the trophy in 2006 and 2007.

Inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame, joining alumni such as MÖTLEY CRÜE, JUDAS PRIEST, SLAYER and IRON MAIDEN were Californian heavy metallers MACHINE HEAD, in tribute to a career that has spanned over two decades.

BLACK SABBATH’s IOMMI Says He Was Working On New Album While Undergoing Chemotherapy

BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi has revealed that he was undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer during the recording sessions for the band’s new album.

Iommi, who was diagnosed with lymphoma late last year, told Kerrang! magazine, “It was good for me to do that. I did feel tired and sick — and it does make you sick, you start throwing up. But on the days when I felt I could do it, we were all there working.”

SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler added, “[Tony] was going to the hospital one day, and we’d go into the studio the next depending on how the chemo was affecting him.”

Iommi, Butler and singer Ozzy Osbourne discussed their new album in a video interview posted at NME.com over the weekend. The three musicians are working with producer Rick Rubin on their first recording project together in 34 years, with Osbourne saying, “We’ve written about 15 songs so far. Whether they all get on the album, I don’t know. We just keep on writing.” Osbourne also dropped a clue about the set’s title, hinting, “Next year, 2013, is a good clue to what we’re going to call the album.”

The reunited BLACK SABBATH – guitarist Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler – look ahead to their headline performance at Download 2012, and discuss how they’re looking to the future, including a new album, in the wake of guitarist Tony Iommi’s successful treatment for cancer.

The trio also discuss the status of original drummer Bill Ward. Ozzy says “the door is still open. His requests were unreasonable. Nothing would’ve been better than to have him play.”

Black Sabbath are currently working on their first studio album in thirty three years and first since 1978’s Never Say Die! with producer Rick Rubin (SLAYER, METALLICA).

Speaking to NME in a new video interview, the band discussed the direction of the new material, the influence of Rick Rubin and their recent Download warm-up gig in Birmingham.

Commenting on the progress of the sessions, Osbourne said: “We’ve written about 15 songs so far, whether they’ll get on an album [I don’t know]… You just keep on writing. I was trying to [work out]: where would we be now musically if we’d have stayed together?

He added: “Next year – 2013 – is a good clue of what we’ll call the album.”

Meanwhile, bassist Geezer Butler revealed how Rubin had approached the writing sessions with the band, explaining: “He sat us down, put the first album on and said ‘listen to this’, imagine it’s 1969, you’ve just done that, what would you do next?”

Black Sabbath’s Iommi, Osbourne and Butler and OZZY OSBOURNE drummer Tommy Clufetos ( replacing original skinsman Bill Ward), made their hometown return to the O2 Academy in Birmingham on May 19th. The band are now gearing up for UK’s Download Festival on June 10th and the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago which runs from August 3rd-5th.
