Composer and vocalist with both EDGUY and AVANTASIA, Tobias Sammet is one of Germany’s biggest artists in recent music history. Just prior to leaving for the next leg of the tour to South America with his all-star rock opera, AVANTASIA, Metal Shock Finland‘s Senior Manager Ali Blackdiamond caught up with Tobias for an interesting and amusing chat about his latest offering “The Mystery Of Time,” Bloodstock Festival and more.
Listen to the full interview on the audio player below and also here are a few excerpts from the conversation:
Discussing the whole AVANTASIA project and touring arrangements, Tobias stated (and joked!):
“It’s not as complicated as it looks. I probably shouldn’t say that because I would probably encourage people to do the same thing and that would make me furious! (laughs) If someone said ‘yeah only the best can do that’ it’s gonna wreck your nerves and don’t try this at home. If there’s any musicians out there listening to this show, considering or thinking about doing it themselves, don’t do it! You will have a heart attack in no time!”
Tobias talked of his reasons for having British fantasy artist Rodney Matthews design “The Mystery Of Time” album artwork:
” It’s been a dream of mine to work with him, I’m a huge fan. I have books of him, I have pictures framed on the walls of our house that were painted by him. In fact, I’m so crazy about his art I just received a book that I ordered, it just came today and when I opened the package, I found I already had it. it’s called ‘In Search Of Forever,’ I bought it twice now!
I’ve always been a huge fan of Magnum and Magnum’s artwork and this album “The Mystery Of Time” is so rich in detail and I wanted to create a true piece of art, musically. I also wanted to stress that by choosing the right artwork I wanted to have something handcrafted, I wanted to have something timeless, something that is not up to date, something that is not trendy, something that you would not expect on an Avantasia album that is being released in 2013. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to say Rodney’s art is old fashioned, I just want to say it’s timeless, a piece of art. That’s what I really love about it, I had to have Rodney’s artwork on my album.”
We talked of the upcoming Bloodstock Festival and Tobias had an unforgettable memory from his last appearance there with EDGUY:
“You don’t remind people of a defeat in football and you don’t mention the war in England if you are German. I went onstage and thought people were a bit reserved and thought I should tickle them. So I said ‘we may have lost the war, but we made it to the quarter finals!’ and luckily everyone started to laugh! In England you have to work hard to make people laugh about your jokes, but when you do, people reward it. That’s when Bloodstock and I became real friends!
I’m looking forward to playing Bloodstock because it’s in the mother country of heavy metal and it’s the country where this was all invented and that’s where we’ll bring Avantasia. It’s the first time for Avantasia on a stage in England.
There’s going to be everybody – Eric Martin, Ronnie Atkins, Bob Catley, Amanda (Somerville), Michael Kiske. The only thing is that we’re not gonna do the full show, because that would be 3 hours, and there’s other bands who want to go on after us! It will be a smooth ‘best of’ set.”
Discussing what’s happening with EDGUY at the moment, Tobias said:
” We won’t disband, we will go on. We are about to start working on a new album this fall. We will take all the time we need until we come up with something that makes sense. I don’t expect a new album to come out until spring or summer 2014.”
Greek metal guitarist Gus G certainly keeps himself very busy, being an integral part of FIREWIND and OZZY OSBOURNE, as well as delivering guitar clinics and working on his first solo album.
FIREWIND has recently appeared at Sweden Rock Festival and will be playing Bloodstock Open Air in August, their only UK date in 2013. The band also have a new album “APOTHEOSIS – LIVE 2012” due for release on 24th June, which is a celebration of ten years of FIREWIND.
Metal Shock Finland’s Blackdiamond had a chat with Gus last week and you can read a few excerpts below. The full interview is available to listen to on the audio player:
Discussing this year’s Bloodstock Festival, Gus said the following:
” This is our one and only UK show for 2013, so it will be pretty special. It’s also our first one in the UK with our new singer. We plan to have a full stage set-up – loads of amps and speakers onstage (laughs). It’s going to be a cool show, I’m looking forward to it.”
Gus described his upcoming solo album:
” It’s in the process now, I’m in between playing festivals and completing writing and gathering some of the guests for the album. I’m probably going to be recording it sometime in the fall and hopefully can release early in 2014. There are some people that are known and some people that are completely unknown, just great musicians. There’s going to be some instrumentals, some songs with vocals. A lot of the stuff is a bit more mellow, a bit more classic rock-ish sounding.”
When asked if he has the newly released BLACK SABBATH album “13” Gus expressed:
” Yeah I downloaded it the first day it came out and I love it, it’s a fantastic album. There’s a lot of great songs on it, they’ve done a great job. I mean what should I say? I’m such a huge Sabbath fan, I’m as excited as everybody else in the world about it! Tony Iommi, it’s unbelievable, this guy, what he comes up with on the guitar. ”
Legendary performer and guitarist Joe Satriani has recently released his 14th studio album, “Unstoppable Momentum” in the UK on Monday May 6 (U.S. release is Tuesday May 7) through Epic Records/Sony Music UK. The album was recorded at Skywalker Sound in San Francisco and was produced by Satriani and Mike Fraser (AC/DC).
The album dovetails Satriani’s UK Tour which started on June 8th. Joe’s touring band for the upcoming UK dates includes Mike Keneally (keyboards), Marco Minnemann (drums) and Bryan Beller (bass). Metal Shock Finland ‘s Blackdiamond went to Joe‘s show at Sheffield City Hall last night, June 15th. She posted two videos of Joe Satriani performing great songs, “Satch Boogie” and “Always With Me, Always With You”. The videos can be seen below:
* Stay tuned for a review of the show coming soon.
After leaving SABATON last year, the four ex members – Daniel Myhr, Daniel Mullback, Oskar Montelius and Rikard Sundén soon decided to start a new band. They very quickly completed their line-up with vocalist (Nils) Patrik Johansson (ASTRAL DOORS, LION’S SHARE) and bass player Stefan “Pizza” Eriksson ( VOLTURYON) and CIVIL WAR was born.
The band are due to release their first full length album “The Killer Angels” via Despotz records on 11th June. The album name is borrowed from the novel by Michael Shaara about the Battle of Gettysburg and the band have released two singles, ‘I Will Rule The Universe’ and ‘St Patricks Day’. Just today (16th may) CIVIL WAR have released the third and last single, ‘First To Fight’ before the upcoming album release.
Blackdiamond recently spoke to keyboard player Daniel Myhr about the band and new album. Some excerpts from the interview can be read below and the full interview can be listened to on the audio player:
Daniel described details about the band name and new album as follows:
“The whole historical theme of course comes from SABATON, but even before we decided on the name CIVIL WAR, we thought that maybe we should move away from the war theme a little bit. But when Patrik came into the picture, it seems he’s really interested in history himself. It doesn’t have to be as detailed as it was with SABATON, so we kind of flipped back to the history/war theme a little bit, even though we didn’t plan to. But some of the songs aren’t about war at all, we’re trying to keep a little bit of distance from it.
The sound is more traditional heavy metal, now we have Patrik he likes to write stuff that sounds a little bit like DIO. Then we mix it together with our style; a bit more typical power metal style, a bit of fusion between the older SABATON before Coat Of Arms and influences from power metal.”
Discussing the change from being in SABATON and moving on to CIVIL WAR, Daniel expressed:
“It felt really good to do something that was more ‘us.’ In SABATON, we were directed with what to play because Joacim wrote the songs. Now we work out all the material together, instead of just having material presented to us. We went from the basic to the finished material really easily, there was never any fuss about anything.”
