Jimmy Kay from The Metal Voice recently interviewed Michael Schenker singer Doogie White (Yngwie Malmsteen, Tank, Rainbow). Doogie spoke about the new album by Michael Schenker Fest, Resurrection, his audition with Iron Maiden in 1993 and his time in Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen.
Watch the interview here:
When asked about his time in Yngwie Malmsteen and the songs he enjoyed recording
“With Yngwie it was different cause I had no heart and soul really in it, it was more about the performances live because Yngwie wrote everything. He gave me all the lines and everything to do. I liked ‘Razor Eater’, I like ‘Rise up’ very much cause it had the energy live.”
When asked about the concept of the Michael Schenker Fest on record and on tour
“It was an exciting album to do it’s an exciting concept I think it was very brave of Michael Schenker to put something like this together and to be invited to enter the party . There is lots of friendly competition between the singers although they won’t admit it. Everybody has raised the game, everybody is at the top of their game and it’s a great live rock and roll show and that makes it exciting for the audience. Some people have the new album cause it only came out the day we started so it’s gradually picking up momentum.”
When asked about his 1993 Audition with Iron Maiden to replace Bruce Dickinson
“I had sent a tape in to Iron Maiden. Dickie Dell who was the production manager was at my door and he said what are you doing, I said I am going to Scotland, he said no you are not you have an audition with Iron Maiden Monday. So Dickie Bell gave me a cassette and a letter with the lyrics I think it had about 18 songs on it, mostly from the albums ‘A Real Live One’ and ‘A Real Dead One’. Dickie picked me up and dropped me off at Steve Harris’ place. ”
“The band was set up in a circle with Nicko Mcbrain in back of me and we ran through the songs and had a cup of tea and I had a chat with Steve and I went away and that was it. We played tracks like , Be quick or Be dead, From here to Eternity, The Evil that men do and then the classics like Run to the Hills. Steve had a definite idea on where he wanted to take the band, Steve called me up a couple of weeks later and said we are giving the job to Blaze. Blaze is great he is the hardest working man in Rock and Roll and he always delivers. Steve wanted something different for the band. the easy route for Steve would have been to go get a clone from a tribute band but Steve didn’t he took a brave step and they did two great albums. but really normal services have been resumed. Even if i got the gig it would have ended up the same.”

Legendary guitarist Michael Schenker (UFO, Scorpions, MSG) and two of his bandmates from Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock, Herman Rarebell (ex Scorpions) and Doogie White (ex Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow) are interviewed on this week’s show. All 3 members choose songs from their current album “Spirit On A Mission”, along with tracks from previous bands.
First up, Michael tells fans what they can expect from the setlist on the band’s UK tour in January 2016 (full dates at http://www.michaelschenkerhimself.com/tour.php), and also discusses the band’s forthcoming third album, and his longterm vision for Temple of Rock. You’ll also hear Michael’s choice of a classic Scorpions song.
Doogie White then celebrates the 20th anniversary of the album he recorded with Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, “Stranger In Us All”, choosing 2 songs and looking back on how he came to join the band, giving an insight into the writing, recording and tour for the album. Doogie also pays tribute to original Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio, and chooses 2 of his favourite songs from Ronnie’s tenure with the band.
The Temple of Rock triple threat concludes with drummer Herman Rarebell, who begins the first in a series of 7 interviews covering the newly released remastered reissues of 8 classic Scorpions albums on SPV Records. Herman tells how he came to join the band in 1977 and shares his memories of the recording and tours for the “Taken By Force” and “Tokyo Tapes” albums and Uli Jon Roth’s departure from the group. Herman also selects two songs from each record.
The show concludes with quickfire interviews with bands who have released some of Rich’s favourite albums of 2016; Michael Voss talks about Mad Max’s “Thunder Storm and Passion” collection of re-recorded 80s classics, Joseph Tholl from exciting new Metal band Black Trip discusses their album “Shadowline”, Grave Digger mainman Chris Boltendahl looks at their newly re-recorded compilation of 80s classics “Exhumation-The Early Years”, and heartland Rocker Melissa Etheridge drops in for a chat about her live cd/dvd/blu ray “A Little Bit of Me – Live In LA”.
Super heavy metal group WAMI, featuring vocalist Doogie White (Rainbow, Michael Schenker, Yngwie Malmsteen), on the drums – Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, DIO), and on the bass – Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake), who joined forces with the 16-year-old Polish guitarist Iggy Gwadera, have released their debut album on vinyl, via Metal Mind Productions.
The idea to record an album together was born after Thin Lizzy’s concert in Poland. The bassist Marco Mendoza, delighted with the young guitarist Iggy, who supported Thin Lizzy with his band Anti Tank Nun, suggested that they record some music together. This first idea, which was maturing for the next dozen-odd months, eventually evolved into the project involving legendary musicians, who are currently recording a brand new album together with Iggy. The drummer Vinny Appice, renowned for playing in some of the best heavy metal bands of worldwide fame, as also the bassist Marco Mendoza have already finished recording bass and drum tracks in Los Angeles. In late November 2013, Doogie White confronted his vocal talent with Iggy’s guitar technique during their recording sessions in Poland. The results of these sessions are truly outstanding!
The band’s new official video “Wild Woman” can be watched now on Youtube. Check it out below.

“It’s a story about music, love, rock’n’roll, beautiful women and tuff guys on motorbikes. And what’s most important – about Iggy’s love for guitar”.
The video was made by Mania Studio (maniastudio.pl) with photos taken mainly in Goleniów, Iggy’s hometown. Guest performance (as Iggy’s mum) was done by Lidia Popiel, an acclaimed Polish photographer. The animation was done by Białkowscy brothers from Szczecin.
WAMI – the names associated with this project are true legends on the hard rock scene: on the vocals – Doogie White (Rainbow, Michael Schenker, Yngwie Malmsteen), on the drums – Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, DIO), on the bass – Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake), who join forces with the young Polish guitarist Igor ‘Iggy’ Gwadera (born in 1997).

The truly outstanding results of these sessions are included on the album entitled “Kill the King”!!
“Kill The King, proves one undisputed fact – this international, intergenerational hard rock WAMI project really works. And even more, the sensational artistic collaboration between a group of talented Polish musicians and the three hard rock legends would be seriously unappreciated if referred to only as a curio in Appice’s or White’s vast discographies. It’s so because of many reasons – not only the predictable quality of the performance by the legendary musicians of Rainbow, Dio or Whitesnake fame, but also well-crafted compositions penned by the creative duo of Cugowski brothers. The true scene stealer is, however, the guitarist Iggy Gwadera – being not even old enough to vote and still, capable of meeting such a challenge. His talent and prowess, surprising at such young age, really shines through the entire album, and it’s almost certain we’ll hear about this gifted young man in the future – perhaps mentioned again alongside big names of the music industry. Let’s also hope Kill The King won’t be the last album under the WAMI moniker – although with the bar set so high with the first one, it’ll be hard to top it. Much recommended.”
