Interviews And Recordings By Sandy Storm And Bobby HQ Storm

Sandy Bobby StormNAMM 2015 took place at the Anaheim Convention Center, California, USA from 22-25th January. Luckily for Metal Shock Finland,  husband and wife team Sandy and Bobby HQ Storm were there to get into the heart of NAMM and report back all the news from many big names in metal, along with an insight into all the latest instruments and innovations available.

Included in this report, which you can see on the video below are guitarists Alex Skolnick, David Ellefson, Mark Zavon and Roy Z. Ramirez, as well as one of the Fender experts showcasing the newest signature bass guitar for Geddy Lee.

Alex Skolnick told of the busy time he was having at NAMM, with ESP clinics and he had played with the METAL ALLEGIANCE tribute the previous night at the House Of Blues, also the Randy Rhoads remembrance show.

David Ellefson stated that MEGADETH have “new stuff developing, working on a new album” as well as mentioning working with ANTHRAX bass player Frank Bello “working on new songs for our “Altitudes and Attitudes” record“.

Mark Zavon from KILL DEVIL HILL discussed that the band “has been writing and getting ready to start tracking in five or six weeks. We’re looking forward to putting out some new stuff and touring.”

Roy Z. Ramirez enthused about his current project TRIBE OF GYPSIES and also revealed that he is “thinking about doing another group – a hard rock/stoner type of thing“, then he also mentioned bands he is working with at the moment.

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN: Donates Guitar To City Of Bologna

Swedish guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen has donated a guitar to the city of Bolgna in Italy, while he was appearing there for the Music Italy Show.

The mayor of Bologna was present to accept this honour, together with the President of BolognaFiere. Multiple local authorities from the Emilia Romagna Region and Province and City of Bologna were also in the audience. When asked how he felt about headlining the Music Italy show and now the donation to the City Of Bologna Yngwie responded “This is huge honour for me…”

13 Year Old Boy Saves His Pocket Money For An Electric Guitar

This is a strange world indeed and sometimes some people surprise us by their decisions. To some of us, Heavy Metal is more than a genre of music, a way to live … Now read a story about a school boy who saves his pocket money which he earned by doing some jobs for his family, so that he could buy a guitar he always wanted, a Fender Stratocaster to play his favourite track, “Smoke On The Water.” Isn’t it a great choice? Isn’t Metal great?

Elizabeth Bernstein of The Wall Street Journal has posted the whole story as follows:

Luke FlottmanWhen Luke Flottman was 8 years old, he got tired of not having any money to buy videogames. So he lobbied his parents for chores—yard work, dishes, making all the beds in the house—to earn some cash. “I knew they weren’t just going to hand it to me,” says the 13-year-old eighth-grader from Cold Spring, Ky.

He made a few dollars a job, sometimes scoring as much as $15 for counting money his dad, Peter, brought home from the soda machine at the printing company he owns. To eliminate inconsistency, Luke and his parents settled on a standard $4 a week.

It’s not much. (In five years, he hasn’t gotten a raise.) But it all goes to the same thing: his passion for rock ‘n’ roll. A big fan of Ozzy Osbourne‘s “Crazy Train” and anything by Metallica, Luke got his first acoustic guitar at age 5 and started weekly lessons at a local music store the same year. A few Christmases later, his guitar arsenal had grown to three.

Then one day a few years ago, Luke arrived early for his lesson and fell in love with a newly arrived cherry-sunburst Squier Stratocaster by Fender (cost: $230). For nine months, he saved every dime of allowance and gift money. Sure, he says, he was occasionally tempted by a new PlayStation console or an Airsoft pellet gun, but the iconic instrument always won out. “I thought: videogames come and go,” he says. “But I can use a guitar for a really long time.”

Now, Luke plays his guitar at home (one favorite tune: “Smoke on the Water”) and with the choir during Mass at school. And, he says, he’s learned to value money. “I don’t get a ton, but I get enough, so if I want something, I have to save and save.”

He currently has “about $500 or $600” stashed away, but no plans yet for another big-ticket purchase. On a recent family vacation to California, he says, he eked out just a little for souvenirs.

“Having an allowance teaches me how to use my money in smart ways,” he says. “I’m pretty good about my spending.”

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN: Question For The Fans About His Signature Guitar

Yngwie MalmsteenLegendary Swedish guitar hero Yngwie Malmsteen has recently asked a question about the color of his signature model guitar via his official facebook page which can be read below:

“Malmsteen MGMT is in talks with Fender Guitars… Question for the fans…If you could get another color of the Yngwie Malmsteen Signature model guitar besides Olympic White, what color would you like to see available? Sonic Blue, Ferrari Red, Jet Black, Seafoam Green? Let us know!”

METALLICA: ROBERT TRUJILLO Talks FENDER, Legendary ‘Bass Of Doom’ (Video)

In an exclusive Fender Vision interview, bassist Robert Trujillo discusses the Fender gear that has served him well throughout this career with SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, INFECTIOUS GROOVES and METALLICA. He also touches on helping to recover the Bass Of Doom, made famous by the late Grammy-winning jazz bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius. Check out the chat below.

Asked by Music Review what his most treasured music-related item or memorabilia was, Trujillo said: “That’s an easy one. My hero is a bass player by the name of Jaco Pastorius. Jaco‘s bass was missing for 20 years, and it’s a long story as to what had actually happened to it, supposedly stolen or sold for drugs; it was a mystery. The bass returned to the world around four years ago, and it was held up by a collector who managed to get hold of it. The family enquired about it and wanted to get the instrument back, because they felt it was theirs and it was nearly impossible because of legal issues and it turned into a war. I have been friends with the family for 17 years and I managed to help them to at least get the bass back into the immediate family. So we got the bass back; I’m the legal owner of the instrument, but we are really all in it together. I’m not a collector of instruments; and I don’t like any of my bass guitars more than the other, but that instrument is loved not only by me but everyone else in the world. I’m glad I was able to get it back to our immediate circle. We’re making a film, not about the bass, but about his life and that will come out in September. In fact, the film company producing it with me was the very same one that did ‘Searching For Sugarman’, Passion Pictures.”

Trujillo‘s movie about Jaco Pastorius, “Jaco”, was directed by Stephen Kijak, who helmed 2010’s “Stones In Exile”, the 2010 film about the recording of the 1972 THE ROLLING STONES album “Exile On Main St.”

“Jaco was my hero growing up,” Trujillo told USA Today. “Hearing him was like hearing Eddie Van Halen doing ‘Eruption’ for the first time: You thought, ‘What instrument is that?’ I loved jazz fusion and branched out from there. But Jaco had an edge that far exceeded his jazz persona. He was funk, he was rock, he was soul. And his whole attitude was punk.”

Trujillo added, “The film for me is from the heart.”

Pastorius, who was bipolar and had wrestled with substance abuse, died in 1987 at age 35 following a violent altercation at a Fort Lauderdale bar.
