Since my last catch up in February with FIREWIND creator and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist GUS G. he has been hard at work as ever, recording his second solo album “Brand New Revolution”.
The album is set for release on 24th July via Century Media Records and sees many artists appearing with Gus, some from his first solo recording, “I Am The Fire”, and some new. I caught up with Gus recently to hear all about the new album and find out what’s going on in the world of GUS G, as well as discovering some hints about FIREWIND. Check out the audio interview below, along with some written excerpts from our chat.
Gus explained more about his choices of guests:
“Mats is my main singer, especially in Europe. I’ve done a lot of shows with him and we wrote a lot of songs on the first album. We ended up writing three songs together again. And the Jeff – we wrote a song for each other’s albums last year and I sent him a bunch of material and said ‘check it out, sing over it to get an idea’. It’s just like that you know, there’s no pressure about that.
Jacob, like I said we had just been writing – we did that song on the first album ‘Just Can’t Let Go’, after that I just kept handing him material, as I liked the way both of us kinda collaborated. He’s an awesome songwriter and great singer, I love his voice and we just ended up writing four or five songs.”

Discussing the album tracks, then in particular the album title track Gus revealed:
“I wanted to include that track on ‘I Am The Fire’ and the guys from the American label were like ‘no, no, no, you don’t need that now’ and I was like ‘alright, well I’ll just save it for the next one!’ I think it’s one of those titles that screams for being an album title really.”
During our last interview we discussed what was happening with FIREWIND, so this time I asked Gus for an update on the situation. He told me:
“I’ve got a few new songs I’ve been working on, we’ll see what happens with that. You know, I need to find some down time to develop that. We’re trying to set a goal for the end of 2016 to go out and do some shows if we have any album out. But it’s hard to say at this point. We will come back and do another record.
I’ve been working with somebody right now who I cannot reveal yet, but it’s going pretty good you know. We wrote one song together already and we’re working on a couple more. It sounds good so far!”
After having recently announced his upcoming sophomore solo album release “Brand New Revolution” via Century Media Records in Europe, Australia and South America, Dismanic / eOne in North America and King Records in Japan, Ozzy Osbourne / Firewind guitarist GUS G. is now ready to launch a few more details about it.
“Brand New Revolution” will be released in Europe on July 24th, 2015 and comes with artwork (which can be seen below) once again created by Gustavo Sazes / http://www.abstrata.net, who already worked with GUS G. on his debut release “I Am The Fire”, but also took care of artwork duties by bands such as Arch Enemy, Kamelot and also Firewind in the past years.
The tracklisting for the album, which features guest vocal appearances by Jeff Scott Soto, Elize Ryd (Amaranthe), Jacob Bunton (Adler, Lynam) & Mats Levén (Candlemass, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), reads as follows:
GUS G. – “Brand New Revolution”:
1. The Quest
2. Brand New Revolution
3. Burn
4. We Are One
5. What Lies Below
6. Behind Those Eyes
7. Gone To Stay
8. One More Try
9. Come Hell Or High Water
10. If It Ends Today
11. Generation G
12. The Demon Inside
A first trailer for the upcoming release (featuring a teaser sample of the opening instrumental piece “The Quest”) can now be seen and heard here:
GUS G. checked in with the following comment about the album: “As I’m putting the final touches on “Brand New Revolution”, I wanted to give out a bit about the new music. “The Quest” is the only instrumental of the album and it’s a heavy, high energy, technical track. The rest of the album once again features collaborations with some awesome singers / songwriters such as the legendary Jeff Scott Soto (who appears on “Gone To Stay” and “Generation G”), Mats Levén (who appears on “Come Hell Or High Water”, “If It Ends Today” & “The Demon Inside”), Jacob Bunton (who appears on “Brand New Revolution”, “Burn”, “We Are One”, “Behind Those Eyes” & “One More Try”) and the awesome Elize Ryd of Amaranthe (who sings on “What Lies Below”). I feel the album as a whole has many influences, from classic Hard Rock / Metal to more modern and current sounds. Stay tuned as more info will be revealed in the coming days”.
“Brand New Revolution” was recorded with Jay Ruston (Stone Sour, Anthrax, Steel Panther, etc.) and mixed by Mike Fraser (Metallica, AC/DC, Van Halen, Aerosmith, etc.). Just as on “I Am The Fire”, the core of GUS G.’s recording group consisted of Jo Nunez (Firewind) on drums and Marty O’ Brien (Lita Ford band) on bass.
GUS G. has recently also announced a few more first summer live-dates to launch “Brand New Revolution”. See here for an overview:

Following a busy year of promotion and touring for his solo debut album “I Am The Fire”, Ozzy Osbourne / Firewind guitarist GUS G. has now announced that the recordings for the follow-up release have been completed. GUS G.’s sophomore solo album will be entitled “Brand New Revolution” and it is expected to be released in July via Century Media Records in Europe, Australia and South America, Dismanic / eOne in North America and King Records in Japan.
Here is a comment from GUS G. with further details:
“Today I’m happy to announce that I have finished recording my second solo album and that it will be released this Summer.
Its title is “Brand New Revolution” and once again I collaborated with some amazing musicians & songwriters on it, including singers Jeff Scott Soto, Elize Ryd (Amaranthe), Mats Levén, Jacob Bunton (Adler, Lynam) while Jo Nunez played drums and Marty O’ Brien (Lita Ford band) played bass, while Jay Ruston (Stone Sour, Anthrax, Steel Panther, etc.) engineered the sessions.
Most of the tracks were recorded live with me and the rhythm section jamming in a room. There’s a certain energy about it, that I hadn’t previously done on a record before. The album is being mixed by the legendary Mike Fraser (Metallica, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc.) in Vancouver, as I write these lines. The first few mixes I got sound crushing! I can’t wait to share this with you all!
In regards to the music itself, I can say that it’s a continuation of the modern hard rock style I followed on my 1st album, although I think this one’s a bit heavier. Needless to say, there’s tons of guitar on it!”
Additionally, GUS G. has been recently confirmed to support US Rockers Hellyeah on some dates in Germany as well as The Netherlands in June and will also be appearing at some European festivals this Summer. The announced dates are as follows:
GUS G. – Live 2015:
09.06.2015 Karlsruhe (Germany) – Substage + Hellyeah

This week’s Blackdiamond’s Metal Mayhem will be on http://www.totalrock.com from 10am GMT on Tuesday 3rd March and is a “We Are The Fire” Special!
GUS G. and ARTHEMIS will be featured, both with interviews recorded at the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham UK, on the first date of the “We Are The Fire” European Tour 2015 and of course there will be songs from both bands.
The show is repeated every week on Saturday afternoons from 4pm GMT and if you want to listen to any older ones, they can be found on Mixcloud at this location.
FIREWIND creator and guitarist with Ozzy Osbourne, GUS G. has been very busy over the last year with his solo project. His debut album “I Am The Fire” was released in March 2014, featuring various artists including Mats Levén, Billy Sheehan and Jeff Scott Soto and received an overwhelming response from fans.
Gus has already done some touring with “I Am The Fire” but has just embarked on a new European “We Are The Fire” tour for 2015, along with vocalist Henning Basse, bass player Strutter and drummer Jo Nunez. Support on the tour comes from Italian metallers ARTHEMIS and young English rockers SKARLETT RIOT. I caught up with Gus before his first show in Nottingham on Friday 20th February, where we discussed the tour and future plans including shows and the next solo album. To hear what Gus revealed about his new album, favourite food and drink, FIREWIND and more, check out the interview on the audio player! You can also read some excerpts from the chat below.
GUS G, Blackdiamond Rescue Rooms, Nottingham February 2015
During our chat, Gus mentioned his next solo album, so I asked him more about it. Gus revealed:
“I’ve already written all the songs and we’ve just finished tracking drums. So once I go back home from this tour I’m gonna go back in the studio and start working on the guitars. So yeah, we’re aiming to finish it by summertime.”
Regarding guest musicians, Gus stated:
“It will still be very much like that (last album) but with less guests. It’s going to be more like a close group of people that I collaborate and co-write with. I’m excited about that, it’s a very high energy album actually. There’s a lot more up-tempo and heavier stuff on it, a lot of guitar in it – just focusing a lot on songwriting. I love to have catchy tunes on there that rock hard!
I co-wrote some songs with Mats Levénand also wrote a lot of songs with Jacob Bunton – he also sang on the first album, he has more of a leading role in this album. There’s a couple more people that I’m not gonna mention right now, because it’s still not set.”
Asked when we would hear more from FIREWIND, Gus expressed:
“The reason why I haven’t made any official statements on the band’s website is because I still haven’t found a singer that I’m comfortable working with on a long term basis yet – I’m pretty close to one right now. And also another factor is because I need to feel really one hundred percent confident that the material is going to be killer and it’s going to be a great album.
So we decided with the band there’s no rush to go back in the studio and do another album and tour cycle – we’ve been doing that for ten years nonstop. Right now I have some ideas that I’ve been working on that I’m excited about, but we’re going to start working with this new singer and we’ll see what happens, if he’s the right one.”
