Jimmy Kay and Alan Dixon interview Sabaton singer Joakim Brodén about the band’s upcoming new studio album ‘The War to End all Wars’ . Plus he recalls his memories of the Judas Priest tour that got cancelled when Richie Faulkner got a ruptured aorta and recalls Blaze Bayley encounter.
When asked about the new album “Our previous album ‘The Great War’ obviously dealt with the same conflict and when we were doing that album we had two stories that we really wanted and those were the ‘Christmas Truce’ and the story of the Harlem ‘Hellfighters’ but we didn’t have the right music and we thought we would do them another time. That in combination of when we released ‘The Great War’ there are such an amount of books and emails from fans and friends telling us stories, saying have you heard about this. And a lot of moments it was like how we haven’t heard about this, how did we miss this. Since we couldn’t tour if we don’t do another album we can tell some of the stories our fans and friends told us.”
When asked about what the band saw while opening for Judas Priest band when Richie Faulkner had fell down from a ruptured aorta during a concert in late September “I had not idea he (Richie) fell at all, I didn’t watch their show I was probably in the dressing room showers the whole time. We came back to the tour bus and a few of us were drinking and some of the Judas Priest crew came in our bus. A few of them said you hear about Richie, he had to go with Paramedics, that was it. We were like ok he had to go with the Paramedics he wasn’t feeling good, that is all we knew. So we kept on blasting Van Halen and jumping in the tour bus pretty much. We felt like assholes the next morning in Kansas City and were told he was undergoing 10.5 hours of surgery. We did not know until the day after. Then we managed to do one final show in Denver, Colorado cause we were already going to be there and we thought, is this going to be the last show or this tour? We booked a venue in 24 hours, it filled up and a whole bunch of Sabaton fans made it.”
Jimmy Kay and Alan Dixon from Canada’s The Metal Voice recently spoke to lead singer of Sabaton Joakim Brodén about the upcoming tour opening for Judas Priest and their new upcoming studio album plus a whole lot more.
When asked about their upcoming Tour with Judas Priest and how it came about “I don’t know exactly how but we played with Priest the first time in 2010 in Berlin. We have run into each other at festivals and it’s all about timing. When we were kids one of our first favorite band was Judas Priest. Obviously we wanted to tour with them even before they knew we existed. It was supposed to be last year but finally we managed to get the timing right with album releases and when we were able to tour. I am really really looking forward to it. Doubly so since we have not been touring much lately and also to be touring with one of our favorite bands of all time, can’t be better huh?”
When asked about the upcoming new Sabaton studio album “It’s a Sabaton Album, we have been an evolutionary band not a revolutionary band. There is always surprises on a Sabaton album but we are never going to flip the coin and do something totally different on every song on a new album. There is going to be surprises on every album. I am actually listening and approving the master for the new album right now. A new album is always subjective and I think it’s pathetic when an artist says, this is our best album we ever made and they keep promoting the same tired line. I say it’s up to the listen to decide. But I know for a fact that everybody in the band, without even sitting in the same room together cause I shipped out the pre mixes to everyone and this is the only time in our history that everybody came back with F*** that sounds great! Everybody is super happy with the production. We were always happy before but maybe this maybe that but now wow we are really happy with the sound. I can’t reveal the exact topic but we are doing modern warfare 20th century.”
Will the songs that you released during the pandemic be on the new album “No they are totally separate from the new album. Those are not on the album we have a complete album, plus those tracks plus a bit more.”
Aug 14 2021 post on Sabaton’s Social media Announcing new album: THE WAR TO END ALL WARS!
JUDAS PRIEST chose Sabaton as main support on their “50 Heavy Metal Years” tour of North America, scheduled for September and October 2021. The group will kick off 2022 with an unprecedented 29-city tour of their home country.
March 6, Finland’s multi-Platinum cello-rockers APOCALYPTICA released their brand-new track and music video, “Live Or Die (featuring Joakim Brodén)”. The song, which boasts what is certainly one of the most dynamic liaisons in heavy metal – the spellbinding music of Apocalyptica and the potent, iconic vocals of Sabaton’s Joakim Brodén – is a fierce battle cry focused on the desecration of our planet. “Live Or Die” was composed by Apocalyptica and recorded in Finland with Apocalyptica and Martin Hansen (Scorpions) producing. The video, directed by Ville Juurikkala and filmed in Berlin, Germany on January 25th, is a fiery performance piece that features Brodén on vocals.
The track, which will be available exclusively in digital form can be accessed HERE.
Apocalyptica and Sabaton have a new but notable history of collaboration. Most recently, the two bands recorded a version of the 2010 Sabaton track “Angels Calling,” released in November 2019, with a companion music video. In addition, Apocalyptica was Special Guest on Sabaton’s just-concluded, critically acclaimed, 15-country European tour, that included Apocalyptica joining Sabaton onstage every night for a half dozen songs. As one UK reviewer wrote, “The chemistry between the two bands was absolutely incredible. Apocalyptica were throwing around their cellos just as hard as Sabaton were throwing around their guitars.”
In support of their current studio album release, the all-instrumental Cell-0, (Silver Lining Music), Apocalyptica – cellists Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso, and Paavo Lötjönen, and drummer Mikko Sirén – will kick off the first leg of their 2020 North American tour on May 3 in Orlando Florida. The band will bring their moving and bombastic live performances to 20 cities over a three-week period wrapping up on May 26 in Boston MA. With a set list that will likely vary night to night, Apocalyptica’s performances will be comprised of new songs from Cell-0 as well as from the band’s rich catalogue. Lacuna Coil will support on all North American dates.
Whilst Europe will enjoy one of the most engaging, exciting and “Apocalyepic” events of the year this coming Autumn 2020, when the cello metal giants Apocalyptica unite with Epica to entertain audiences all over the continent, from Budapest to Barcelona, on the Epic Apocalypse Tour. The two will co-headline, showing both a refreshing camaraderie and lack of ego, and will be joined by the exciting, progressive metal band Wheel, who will open each night with their engaging juxtapose of time-defying grooves and deep social exploration.
Tickets are on sale now, for all pre-sales, VIP packages, and ticketing details go to this location.

Alan Dixon from Canada’s The Metal Voice spoke to SABATON‘s vocalist Joakim Broden and guitarist Chris Rorland at Heavy Metal Montreal 2016.
When asked about their stage production in North America
“This is a premier for our stage set in North America, so tonight there will be pyros and we have a tank, our European stage set made it’s way here, don’t ask me how Canadian customs let a tank into Canada? “ (joking)
When asked about this being their last Tour
We are starting out in January, February, March tour for our new album “The Last Stand”, which of course we will call it the last tour. It’s not going to be the last tour, we are a competitive band and Status Quo started there Farewell tour in 1984 , that’s 32 years ago, so we better start now.”
When asked about the new live album and the new live DVD
The new album is called The Last Stand on the 19th of August and depending on which version you are going to get. the big one is a compete live show from France. It was one of those times actually where everything worked, we didn’t think about the fact that we were filming. Originally filmed for a French TV channel, only 60 minutes of it aired and normally when we are making a DVD we are nervous there is always some thing goes wrong. This is one of the times when nothing went wrong and everybody in the band just had fun with the crowd
When asked about Joakim’s Frontman influences
“My influences, obviously Bruce Dickinson on of the great ones on of the most underrated front men is Dee Snider of Twisted Sister. fantastic front man.
Vocalist Joakim Brodén of Swedish metallers SABATON recently lost a drunken bet with his bandmates, agreeing that the loser had to walk to the group’s next gig, set for October 1st at Trondheim Metal Fest in Trondheim, Norway, reported blabbermouth.net.
“I will not go into details on exactly what happened, but I can say that it was fun and a bit silly,” Brodén told Norway’s TRD.by web site.
According to Google Maps, the distance between SABATON‘s hometown of Falun and Trondheim is around 520 kilometers (approximately 323 miles) and the estimated time required to make the trip on foot is 107 hours.
“It started out almost as a joke, but it evolved to be quite serious,” said Brodén, who began his trip this past week. “Now I will take a few days rest. I have made contact with some fans via Facebook, who have provided me with food and shelter.”
Brodén told TRD.by that he made his way to Vormsund, Norway without a hitch.
“The first day was the hardest,” he said. “That’s when I walked for ten hours without proper shoes. It wasn’t exactly ideal.”
Joakim has since started wearing running shoes, making the trip a lot more comfortable.
“And I do not walk such long stretches of time now. I walk between four and eight hours a day,” he said.
SABATON is continuing to tour in support of its latest album, “Heroes”, which was certified gold in the group’s home country for sales in excess of 20,000 copies.
“Heroes” sold around 3,100 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 99 on The Billboard 200 chart.
