Former RAINBOW and RAINBOW singer Joe Lynn Turner is contemplating a major change of scenery.
Turner arrived in Crimea last week in advance of a series of concerts scheduled in the region, and at a press conference heralding his arrival, he announced he’s thinking about leaving the U.S. to reside in Belarus, the native land of his wife, lawyer Maya Kozyreva, according to ultimateclassicrock.com. But that’s only if the country’s authoritarian leader, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, “lets me in.”
Proclaiming “I have no love anymore for the United States, really,” Turner went on to praise Russian president Vladimir Putin, pointing to a Putin pin he was wearing and saying, “I wear this because I believe it. I’ve listened to every leader in the world. The only one who’s telling the truth is Putin.”
Turner went on to suggest that he’s “found a new life and a new home” in the area, telling reporters that he believes “truth lives in Russia” and adding, “I know the truth lives here. And I believe right now, this time Russia is going to be the great power that it already has been and that good always overcomes evil.”
Dismissing the idea of cultural sanctions against Russia, Turner depicted his Crimean concerts as an act of rock ‘n’ roll rebellion. “Music is a universal language, it transcends all politics, religions, disputes and arguments between people, it brings the world together,” he insisted. “I was warned I could be banned in Europe [for giving concerts in Crimea]… but I am a rebel, I have always been a rebel and I will always stay a rebel. I do not care what they say.”
This second edition of Frontiers Rock Festival was my first experience at this AOR based 2-days label festival at Live Club(on 11-12 April 2015 in Trezzo – Milan, Italy). But I must say right away that it’s difficult to express with words the emotions that those days provoked in me… Here, we’re not talking just about a label festival; it felt more like a family gathering! People, Friends, before and in between the band performances, gathered together in smaller groups to fill the venue all over, talking about the latest news, even with me, who right at the beginning felt a bit like a fish out of water. However, as soon as the first tunes filled Live Club, I found myself fully immersed as if I had always been there. I will not try to put into words the turmoil of various feelings and emotions I had inside me during those 2 days. I’ll let the facts, pictures and videos (watch below) do the talking, as they will surely say more than 1000 well-selected words… check them out for yourself!
Each band gave their best on stage, but the absolute highlights for me were ECLIPSE and their crazy show, which didn’t leave anybody cold! And it goes without saying that the guys of BURNING RAIN(Doug Aldrich – Guitars, Keith St. John – Vocals, Sean McNabb – Bass, Matt Starr – Drums) conquered me in full, with their precise and impeccable sounds and great songs. They finished their set with a legendary cover of the Led Zeppelin classic, “Kashmir”, featuring on keyboards our “own” Italian pride and joy, Alessandro Del Vecchio, Frontiers’ own producer. I still have chills in me, thinking of their performance as “Kashmir” was one of the biggest soundtracks of my entire childhood (see the video and Day One pics below).
My second FRF day was unfortunately short, as I had to leave for the long drive home before I could see the day’s headliners on stage. But one thing is for sure, my unconditional highlight was One Name, One Man, who stood up and took the audience with his captivating and enchanting stage presence: DANGER DANGER‘s legendary vocalist TED POLEY, with his brilliant Festival line-up (Anna Portalupi on bass, Alessandro Del Vecchio on keyboards, Mario Percudani on guitars and Alessandro Mori on drums). Believe me, one simply cannot help falling in love with Ted and his devoted performance — you just let go and enjoy it all. Ten points also to the Live Club security, who was put to the test when Ted suddenly jumped into the public to sing “a duet” with hundreds of people around him in the audience, and then piloting him back to the stage. No harm done but a lot of fun!

Overall Frontiers Rock Festival exceeded my highest expectations. These great bands have revived my love for AOR, which began in my childhood but somehow got lost during the last 10 years. I also want to thank the Frontiers Crew for the excellent organization, in all its details, and for making me feel like one of the family! There’s only one tiny little problem, or more like a question: how will we manage to wait a whole year until the next edition of Frontiers Rock Festival?
The best way to “feel” music is to do so together with a huge family… Music, as it should always be, is without frontiers—just as it was at Frontiers Rock Festival! See you next year! \m/
The answer is “yes,” says Joe Lynn Turner. The singer insists he’ll cut a deal with his former RAINBOW bandmate for a reunion in 2015, according to guitarplayer.com.
“He’s itching to do some rocking, and we’re going to get together in the fall,” Turner told Classic Rock on April 5, following a solo performance in London.
“Ritchie is really, really ready to rock. He still has the chops too.”
Turner talked about a Rainbow reunion in December 2014, noting that Blackmore “deserves to go out in a big blaze of glory.” Talks were reportedly held that month.
“Now is the time—2015,” Turner said in December. “Everybody’s sitting there waiting for this to happen.”
Rainbow were active from 1974 through to 1984, when they disbanded. At the time, Blackmore and bassist Roger Glover returned to Deep Purple, where they had originally performed together from the late Sixties to the early Seventies. Rainbow regrouped in 1993 with Doogie White replacing Turner on vocals.
Blackmore split from Rainbow in 1997 to focus on Blackmore’s Night, his Renaissance-influenced group with his wife, Candice Night. The band has been the sole outlet for his work since then. To date, Blackmore’s Night have released nine studio albums.
According to Turner, previous negotiations for a Rainbow reunion included a 60-day tour and an HD 3-D movie. Those plans reportedly fell apart when Blackmore pulled out to work on a Blackmore’s Night project.
Turner added that bassists Jimmy Bain and Bob Daisley have both been recruited, though it’s unclear why the band would need two bassists. Bain performed with Rainbow from 1975 to 1977, when Daisley took over and stayed until 1979.
“I’m not sure if it’s going to be a Rainbow reunion or a bunch of remakes—which I detest, because you can’t improve on perfection,” Turner said. “But that’s what’s happening.”
Stay tuned, and we will see if it actually happens this time.
Rich Davenport’s Rock Show this week features interviews Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple, Rated X) and Eclipse, and is now available for streaming below.
On this week’s show, one of Rock’s most powerful and enduring vocalists, Joe Lynn Turner drops in to talk about his imminent solo acoustic tour of the UK, which starts on 1st April, billed as “An Evening With Joe Lynn Turner” (see dates at http://www.facebook.com/joelynnturnerofficial). Joe also selects tracks from the new Rainbow box set “A Light In The Black”, and gives an insight his songwriting partnership with Ritchie Blackmore and the story behind the song “Jealous Lover”. Joe also chooses a song from his friend Ronnie Dio’s tenure with Rainbow. You can also hear Joe’s thoughts on appearing at 80s festival Rewind, and his appearance on X Factor Bulgaria. The show also clears up part of the myth regarding a version of AC/DC’s “Back In Black” on Youtube, allegedly featuring Bon Scott; the track is actually from “Thunderbolt”, and AC/DC tribute album released in 1998, and features Joe on vocals, with an all star band – if you’d like find out who they are, and hear the song, tune in!
The show also features an interview with Eclipse guitarist Magnus Henriksson, who discusses the writing and recording of the band’s facemelting new album “Armageddonize”, which sees them delivering another set of killer songs in their trademark melodic Hard Rock / Heavy Metal hybrid style. Magnus chooses two songs from the new release.
You can also listen on Sunday 29th March 15:00-17:00, Tuesday 31st March12:00-14:00 and Thursday 2nd April 07:00-09:00 on http://www.totalrock.com
All Star Hard Rock Line Up Includes vocalist Joe Lynn Turner; Drummer Carmine Appice; Bassist Tony Franklin and Guitarist Karl Cochran.
Frontiers Music Srl, the Italian-based label known for embracing new music from legendary Rock artists, returns with another impactful project: RATED X. Set for release in the EU on November 7th and in North America on November 11th, the album features all new songs built upon a classic Hard Rock foundation, with a distinctly contemporary edge.
RATED X was formed at the suggestion of Frontiers President Serafino Perugino, who mentioned to singer Joe Lynn Turner that a band of highest caliber musicians should be assembled to create an album of classic Hard Rock music. Turner, the former lead vocalist for both Rainbow and Deep Purple and a solo artist in his own right, agreed, and the search for the right players was on. Carmine Appice, who already had a relationship with Frontiers, was on board immediately. A true percussion icon, Appice’s resume is one that Rock legends are made of: Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Ozzy Osbourne, Rod Stewart, Blue Murder, King Kobra and others.
Appice’s former Blue Murder bandmate and bassist, Tony Franklin (best known for his work with The Firm, Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers, David Gilmour, Kate Bush, and Whitesnake), signed up next. After a lengthy search for the right guitarist, they settled on long-time Turner collaborator Karl Cochran, who has also worked with Ace Frehley, and worked in the past with Joe Lynn Turner on his solo albums.
“I believe we wanted to keep it a bit retro with a modern edge,” says Turner. “The songs are classic rock, but then that’s an understatement. They are what they are; and they transformed as we went along recording. So, all in all, we are very happy to finish the record and finally able to get it out to the public. Everyone in this band is a true individual and stylist. When you put it all together, you have Rated X.”
The debut album, simply titled, Rated X, is remarkable in that it sounds like a band that has worked together as a unit for years. The songs are powerful and the performances are tight and innovative. Frontiers in-house producer, Alessandro del Vecchio, not only handled studio production but added keyboards on several tracks. Pat Regan (Mr Big, Deep Purple, Gotthard, Kiss, Doro) mixed the album.
Says Carmine Appice: “With his help in coming up with the song ideas and working together with the band I believe we came up with the sound from the late 70s -80s. To me, it sounds like Blue Murder with Joe Lynn Turner singing. Having Tony and myself as the rhythm section and with the heavy guitars, it gives the record a Blue Murder-vibe. Then, adding Alessandro on keys gave us a bit of the Deep Purple thing. It all works together and I loved playing each song.”
